Picture a job ad: skilled, bilingual manager with higher education diploma and 5 years of previous experience wanted. Well, you may expect this solid role would be well-paid, but in the world of Choosing Beggars this is not the case.

In fact, more and more employers are looking for workers with impressive resumes and a set of ludicrous requirements, only to offer them pennies in return. Thanks to the subreddit Choosing Beggars that is notorious for calling out greedy and delusional people like this, we have a lot of real-life cases to look at. From a church that expects 10% of their employee's pay back to a company that’s looking for a bilingual manager to take charge of a team for $8 an hour, some of the job ads are hard to believe.

Also, scroll down for our interview with Dawn Moss, the founder of “Your Interview Coach,” who has been helping both candidates and hiring managers through the recruitment and selection process since 2013. She happily shared insights into the job market today and explained why some employers have such high requirements for little salaries. Dawn also has some tips on what to do if you ever receive a delusional offer!

I'm going to be unpopular by saying this. If you can't afford a kid, don't have several of them. There's no easy kid and certainly not the plural version. For sure it's not a reason not to pay the nanny.

Sure, some kids are way easier than others, but that is irrelevant here - they agreed to $16/hr and want to "compromise at $20" (which I assume means total) for 8 hours of babysitting. I mean, WTAF!!?

I saw the original story. It is actually the niece that did the babysitting. The mother of the babysitter had to block their sister because of the way she treated her daughter after a full day of babysitting.

My kids were always easy..according to anyone that met or looked after them. However if child care cost is agreed Upon in advance then you pay that amount! I used to run daycare and ALWAYS undercharged the going rate.dont rip child care people off. Don't rip off parents either. The costs are ridiculous these days.

To find out what an expert has to say about high expectations and low salaries offered in the job market, Bored Panda spoke with Dawn Moss. “I've worked with hundreds of hiring managers in lots of different disciplines and this is one of the common situations; low salary and high expectations for the job,” she said. “To be fair to all the hiring managers out there, they are often given a budget and want to get as much as they can with the money they have!”

I am a nanny. I wouldn't take this job for less than $20 per hour, which is $140 per day...$700 per week. Paid on a salaried basis, not hourly. So, $700 per week regardless of when the boyfriend gets home. You're looking for a full time nanny, they need to be able to count on their income, not have it change at random. This is laughable. There's absolutely no way she found someone.

Actually, it probably is similar. This is a normal caretaking ad, people just want it to be some awful thing, so they are intentionally misunderstanding. A caretaker is almost always a non-wage side gig. I know lots of people who have done it, it's definitely way easier than being a live-in farmhand.

People, just a note: a caretaker isn't a caregiver, this is not unusual AT ALL. You take care of a PROPERTY, often not a daily task, in exchange for land & sometimes utilities. This is very normal, and it's not someone asking for free home health care. The caretaker usually is retired or works a main job, then a few hours weekly of property caretaking duties replace lot rent.

“It can seem overwhelming when a candidate looks at the job advert and job description with the long list of criteria, tasks, responsibilities, etc. In my experience as an in-house recruiter, this job description was often a 'wish list,'” Dawn told us. “The hiring managers would take that job to market (job boards, agencies, social media, etc.) and see who was looking, who was interested in the job, and see what they could get for the salary,” she said.

Moreover, the job description is also what we tend to think of as the 'end product.' “This means the hiring managers and recruiters aren't necessarily looking for a candidate to 'tick' all of the boxes. Of course, it's great if they find someone who does match most or all of the criteria.”

$200 eh? Okay let's use the "school pictures pricing model". The $200 package will get you 2 - 8x10 (one for each parental unit), 3 - 5x7 (for those family or friends you REALLY like, and 20x wallet size. Choose one photo only: Placement of ring, The Kiss, or The Cake Stuff.

Honestly everything wedding related is overpriced af. $200 for a professional photographer? No, you are not going to find one. But if you are on a budget getting someone who likes photography as a hobby and has a $300 camera is reasonable to get for$200 as a side gig. Unless they are completely incompetent you'll get decent pictures

Just got my PhD. Whew, looks like I can start whittling my loans down!

Dawn explained that the job description is a measurement of what the hiring managers would like someone to work towards. “So candidates should keep this in mind when applying for the job and demonstrate not just their fit to the job now, but their potential to meet the criteria in the future. For example, if you have no experience but you are undertaking a qualification, training course, certificate, etc., be sure to add these things to your cover letter and CV.”

“Also, keep in mind that it can be a benefit to the business if a candidate doesn't 'tick' all of the boxes,” Dawn said and added that “they are more likely to stick around for a little longer, be highly motivated to meet the new challenges, and have a balance between bringing lots of skills and experience to the job but also lots of opportunities to learn and develop in the job.”

Most people can't afford private, in-home care for their children so they take their children to a daycare center. One of the things I'm noticing about these posts is that they are asking for their own personal nanny to come to their house for crazy low, even illegally low pay.

I've been seeing a lot of broken down registers and other such things at my local stores lately -- and hearing they are having a lot of trouble finding and keeping IT staff. Probably because of this mindset. Stores who would rather lose the ability to make any sales so go out of business than share any of their obscene profits with any employees.

Then call it Mid or Senior Level, not Entry Level, as all those qualifications are what you’re supposed to LEAVE a f*****g entry level job with, because the entry level job is where you LEARNED and gained experience in them. Why is this so goddamned difficult to understand?

Scagsy gave a good analogy above. The employer is calling it Entry Level because it's for an Entry Level salary. It's got nothing to do with the applicants' actual skill level, it's about what they are willing to pay. And they want to pay pennies to get an expert.

“Certainly, people are now talking about wanting to spend more quality time with their friends and family and some have enjoyed working from home and the balance that adds to their lifestyles. The conversation has started up again about the 4-day working week,” Dawn explained and added that it will certainly be an interesting trial and topic to follow.

Meanwhile, her advice for the applicant who receives a clearly delusional salary offer is to try to get an idea of the salary or the salary range before going through the entire recruitment process. “If there's a number you can call to get more information or have an informal chat, always call them. This is a genuine invitation to call and start a conversation, but also start the relationship.”

It's like going to school for free. Lots of companies do this. Better than studying all those things and paying for them at university. If they already have the skills required they don't need to do the training. I think it's nice they're providing this opportunity as sk many jobs require high qualifications that not many people have.

It's a good point, although I wonder what the universality of the certificate is. If it means you're now a certified Infrastructure Support Specialist and that makes you marketable to other jobs, then that's a good thing. If it's tied to that specific company somehow, it could leave you looking like you went through their training but failed to get hired, which could be a bad thing.

Well this isn't exactly a job...it's an apprenticeship which is almost like an internship, and the pay will go up after the program is complete. Also under that circle it appears they provide housing, so while that stipend is low you should take into account that rent and utilities are paid for by the company...which btw eats up the majority of most peoples paycheck.

Except the point behind an apprenticeship (and it may even be a requirement for government stipends to cover it) is that the apprentice has no prior experience - which is belied by their first sentence. We want someone who already know what they are doing to come and be patronised into "learning" so we can get the government funding. (Depends which country this is of course)

Most churches do contribute to societal needs that most people ignore. I don't know about this one, obviously, but i sepulcher like to think the warm cabbage church helps their community like the churches in my area. Almost all money goes to helping people and the community. This church is probably struggling greatly. They probably would like to be able to pay said wage, so they are, but strings attached... the early comment about tithing being voluntary rather than required is for sure true, though. I have mixed feelings about this one

The 10% came from the Old Testament before kingships were instituted. The 10% "tax" was to be given to the Levi tribe since at the time they were the hub of societal duties - judges, religious roles, social leaders. Now churches come along and say its members should be giving 10% of their wages because "it's in the Bible and God said it" when today's church isn't doing the additional services of our government (which we are also additionally paying taxes to.) How convenient for the church to only remember the OT concept but forget the context behind it.

Going from stating $1 per hour to $1 per 1000 words is super shady. I can't imagine consistently writing essays at the rate of 1000 words per hour. Most will take some amount of research if you aren't going to plagiarize. If you want super cheap labor, you usually have to look overseas to somewhere wages are much lower, but I don't know where on the planet someone with good enough English and writing skills would work for that little. I'm looking at that story about a job in this thread for minimum wage in Malaysia at around RM1200/month and this is RM725/month if working a 40 hour week and actually hitting that 1000 word target.

About 25 years ago, when online jobs/job postings were just starting to get off the ground, I found a listing for an online writing/editing/proofreading position. I have a BA in English Lit, so I applied. First red flag was when they insisted I pay then $25 USD as a "nonrefundable application fee." Second red flag was that part of the "entrance exam" was a spelling test. They'd give you a word spelled two different ways, and you had to pick which was the correct one. They falsely claimed that I'd made "incorrect" choices for four of the words (I had not), so I "didn't score well enough to pass the entrance exam." They refused to refund my $25. Oh well--lesson learned. If they're not smart enough to know how to spell basic words, I don't need to work for them.

This is bad, don't get me wrong, but I wonder if it has more to do with OP having a s**t job with s**t pay. I have seen too many people on welfare who literally cannot afford to get a job because they lose the welfare completely, but now must pay for gas, parking, and child care... you're better off not working. This sounds like someone who is desperate... If you "truly can't afford" more than $25/day for child care, then you are yourself being exploited.

We've done the math and in order for it to be worth it to get off the EBT and Medicaid benefits we have (as well as the CAP programs we're part of with the utilities), we'd have to find a job that's paying at least 40k a year AFTER taxes. It isn't that "no one wants to work", it's that no one wants to pay a decent, livable wage. I wonder if some of these people would just be better off staying home with their kids instead of working for these shitty wages/jobs.

50 hours a week requires overtime pay. $2.50 an hour is not anywhere near a living wage. No thank you.

Though I'm guessing this arrangement is for the child to be left with the sitter and the sitter would be at their own home, possibly with their own kids or other children they watch. It's still incredibly low, but it's not as egregious as some of these folks who expect private, in-home baby sitting for less than minimum wage.

My bf does this at $175 a day even if it's under 175 stops. There's been days where he's gone in at 9, & got off at 1:30 because he only had 90 stops. So that day he made $43 an hour. He gets an extra dollar per stop when it goes over 175 stops. There's stops where he's had to deliver 20 packages, so I'm sure he would actually prefer the $1 per box lol when he averages 150-200 stops. This is actually a good deal.

Sometimes it's required to even get a job. Generally, especially in my field, you need years of experience to get a job. Becoming an intern while on college can get you a hoot job right out of graduating. We'd like pay for our work, yes, but the experience we get to be able to get jobs in the future is worth it most of the time.

I'm reminded of the all-too-common stories I unfortunately keep seeing, here and elsewhere, where an established company gets some "new blood" in management. They decide the best way to get rid of "dead wood" is to lay off/force into early retirement some of their older, more established workers--the ones earning the most, with the most institutional knowledge. Those workers leave, and suddenly nobody knows how to do anything, where anything is, how to get a hold of various ppl/companies, etc. New management insists that getting rid of the "deadwood" was the right way to go, because of how much money it saved the company! They decided to "hire" two unpaid recent college graduates to do all that work--and are somehow surprised when nobody wants to work for free.

A new law requires interns to be paid, interns can not be forced or expected to pay out of pocket to carry out intern duties;. ie go get me a double mocha frappe and 15 other coffees and you pay for it. My cousin was an intern on GMA and saud it was a living hell. She was instrumental in the development of the intern law

This isn’t bad. If you’re looking to be something like a graphic designer this would be a great experience. And most interns work for completely free. Even the potential for compensation is great.

I can see the appeal of this to a die-hard fan but you HAVE to include admission in it. I used to be in the sports industry and we regularly had tours of the stadium and dressing rooms. I think it used to cost £15-£20 about 25 years ago so it would be more than that now due to inflation but you can't justify $350 for it. And we didn't put them to work while they were there! (Maybe we should have let them play. We might not have been relegated!)

This is the tragedy of a single parent working 2 low wage jobs. Yes, it's insane to offer $2 per hour, but it's even more insane that people work 2 jobs and still don't make enough money to pay their babysitter a decent wage.

The American employment system is not only revolting, but a joke to most of the world… They could ABSOLUTELY change it all to make sure everyone earns decent wages, but they don’t want to.. I also wrote a comment on another website the other day saying that there were some restaurants in America that changed and upped their salary for their staff to liveable wages but the staff complaint and refused to do it because they prefer to live off the tips they got instead. Yeah it’s a mixed bag there.

When a person is on unemployment, part of the agreement the person makes when receiving weekly payments, is that they will complete a certain amount of job searches each week (ex:Here in iowa, its 4 jobs a week) a lot of people scam the system and say they went to an interview, and use the post as "proof" that they showed up. That might be why that was put in the message. To be clear, I am, in no way, supporting that job advert!
