How many times have you wanted to do something? How many times have you been stopped because of your age? Well, I know that story all too well.

Let me introduce myself.

My name is Maddy and I am a freelance graphic designer and founder of the company “Honey Bee Design Co”. I’ve been on an accelerated course since I could remember. I always took classes above my grade level, read books above my grade level, and recently graduated high school at the age sixteen.

I’ve begun my life since then and now that I am seventeen, I am looking for more options. However, I have come face to face with a monster on this journey. There has been multiple times where I haven’t been taken seriously because of one thing…my age. Now if someone were to come up to me and talk with me, they almost always assume I’m older than I am. Whether I seem more mature, I have all my eggs in a basket, or because I have high standards for myself.

But I’m not special. There are many young entrepreneurs in the world that try their hardest but get no where because of their age. With the uprise of technology, more people see their chance for success. I know people who open their own ecommerce stores, publish their own albums, and seek publishers to get their carefully crafted novel to the public.

It’s a shame that after all of the hard work and discipline, we aren’t given a chance because of how young we are. When in reality, our age shows how committed we are to our dreams. All over social media we are shown what our elders think of us, where we should be, and what measures our success. To me, success is taking your skill, practicing it, and putting it to use where you can make a difference in your community.

Success is discipline. Discipline is following your dreams. And I always choose to follow mine. How about you?
