In an old family house near Zakopane in Poland, which no one has lived in for many years, I found archival family photos in a wardrobe. Black and white, old photos, which were most likely taken by my St. memory of grandfather. Unfortunately, there were no dates on the back, but I’m betting it was the ’60s. There were people on them that I couldn’t quite recognize. I thought that I would take these photos with me and ask my mother for help in identifying these people.

Once I arrived at the place and we started looking through these photos together. One picture caught my eye. I knew exactly where it was taken, but I wasn’t entirely sure who the two girls were. As it turned out, the person on the right is my mother, and the one on the left is her sister. The photo was taken right next to the old family house near Zakopane, most likely when they were in their teens (10?, 13?)

It was then that I had the idea that it would be nice to take a picture of these two people in the same place “years later”. I did not know how to solve it logistically, currently living in Gdańsk, and both ladies in the vicinity of Opole, but the time of All Saints has come. It so happened that several of our family graves are located in the town where the photo is located, so it was a good opportunity to take this unique photo for me. I took a vacation from work to extend my weekend and packed up the car. I left Gdańsk, taking my mother and her sister from Opole. Visiting the graves of relatives in that area, we drove up to their family home, I asked them to stand in the same place and position themselves in the same way as years ago. And here it is, I did it, after traveling all over Poland I managed to create a photo from the series then and now.

Both ladies are now in their seventies, and between these photos there is about 60 years of difference.
