Acrylic paint pouring is fun, relaxing, satisfying and if done right, can produce some gorgeous, fluid art. But it’s also really easy to just make a mess. This is where the fun comes in. I have NEVER trashed a paint pour that I’m not happy with. In fact, my “unfinished” pile is full of my favorite future projects.
After a pour has been either ruined by disturbing the paint before it’s dry (fruit flies love a nice, wet pour painting) or if the composition was just off and/or if the paints were not properly prepared, it can be discouraging. But it’s a great opportunity for something new. I don’t think of them as failures, I just think of them as being in transition.
I think an ugly painting is sometimes easier to riff with than starting with a blank canvas.
These are five of my favorite ugly paint pours. I set the original canvas aside and over the following days, weeks, or months, I just stared at it and eventually something completely fun and new emerged. These kinds of projects keep me up at night. I always seem to do best when I’m given a set of parameters to create within, whether its: a color pallet or a theme, or a certain set of materials.
