What do you get when you cross a 10-pound bag of flour and a naked guy? In my case, you get one heck of a photoshoot!
I posted a casting for a particular shoot that I was very passionate to create. I bet you can guess what the project would involve from the title: flour! I didn’t expect people to respond, seeing as how I was a new member, but I received a message back right away! A man named Richard R. asked to be a part of it.
After a few short messages exchanged, we came up with a date to conduct the project. February 19, 2016, was the night. With much excitement, I set up the Cove in at our studio and prepared for my guest.
After introductions, a short tour of the school, and a few moments to cover Richard’s entire body in flour, we began our photos. A colleague assisted me during this session by throwing the flour into the shot. We nailed some great poses right off the bat. Richard is a natural when it comes to modeling the human body!
So why, you may ask, did I mention the “naked guy” remark in the first place? Around half way through the shoot, Richard kindly asked us if it was all right if we did some more ‘natural’ photos. Seeing as how this was my first fully naked shoot I was both happy to have the opportunity but scared to death! Richard is someone who has modeled for anatomy books and modeled nude for artists in the past, so to ask such a question did not concern me in the least. As we got started we covered the remaining parts of his body in the soft, white flour and began to shoot.
The uneasy reality of a naked man posing in front of me quickly vanished as we created these beautiful works of art. These photos were used for my April 2016 gallery, and I am proud to say that this could most possibly be one of my most successful shoots of the year! I have included a few sneak peaks of the session below, but be aware of the content!
It took me a full 3 hours to clean the studio that night. The custodians graciously let me borrow the powerful vacuum to get the flour dust out of the air, and I had to use it to suck the powder off of the expensive curtains that separate the studios.
With strobing lights starting to slow and almost emptying the whole bag of flour, we wrapped up the session with a signed model release and safe wishes on Richard’s drive back to home.
