Cats may have nine lives but people do not. It can take years to build yourself up into an independent adult and mere moments to burn it all to the ground. Many of us are well aware that we aren't cats, or superheroes, but that doesn't always stop us from taking stupid risks, making dumb decisions or doing things that go against our better judgment.
Whether its partying a bit too hard, dabbling in substances, gambling all our money away or failing to wear a helmet, many a life has been completely wrecked in the blink of an eye. One bad choice, one angry remark, one terrible idea that seemed bright at the time is sometimes all it takes to unravel everything you've worked so hard to achieve. It's in these moments that a very clear "before" and "after" becomes evident, and there's no doubt that things will never be the same again.
Someone asked, "What's the fastest way you've seen someone [mess] up their life?" and Shakespeare couldn't have written the tragedies better. Bored Panda has put together a list of the most sobering ones. Among them: The successful guy who lost everything after driving drunk, the BMX trickster who chose not to wear a helmet and now has a serious brain injury, and the very sad story about a little girl who made one wrong move while out skiing with her family.

Not wearing a helmet when doing BMX tricks.
He was doing a grind down a handrail and went over the outside of the rail from about 15 stairs up and landed on his head. Now he can't speak correctly, can't focus, and he gets mad easily and often.
Brain Injuries are terrifying and doing things like wearing a helmet when biking or wearing your seatbelt when driving are such a "no-brainer" to me after seeing how it has affected people around me.
Making a massive mistake can feel like the end of the world, but sometimes it's actually a life lesson and the bridge to a different way of doing things. After all, if you're still breathing, you're still alive.
"You may have suffered some setbacks and you may have to forge a different path to build the kind of life you want, but very few situations in life can’t be turned around," say Anna Phillips-Waller and Steve Phillips-Waller from a site called A Conscious Rethink.
Often, they add, the most important step is to accept that your life isn’t nearly as messed up as you think: "Once you stop believing that you are helpless and start believing that you can assert a level of positive control over your life, you will be able to take action."
I had a buddy that was getting put into the back of the cop car. He was getting an underage drinking ticket. Not to big of a deal it was a $200 fine and off your record in a few years.
Then he elbowed the cop in the jaw and made him fall to the ground.
That messed up his life.
When I was living in New England, I met a man at church that had the most bizarre haircut and an "off" personality. The back half of his hair was a different coarseness and length than the rest, but that was just as noticeable as the fact that he was recently missing a thumb (scars looked fresh). He's pretty well off for himself and has a family that everyone knows and respects. Two daughters, a son, and a charismatic wife. The son was the one that ruined everything for his family with one single stupid choice.
He had always been the black sheep of the family, partying irresponsibly. Due to his poor choices, he was grounded from the family European vacation and threw a massive party in his family's nice home while they were gone. The mistake was this: he exhibited his father's gold coin collection to show off to/impress the random people that were coming to his party. The party ended, people went home, he cleaned up, and his family came back none the wiser.
Later that week, a few people from the party came back uninvited in the middle of night with machetes. They broke in and instantly went to each bedroom to k**l anyone they found, with machetes. The first bedroom they came across was the youngest daughters room (~10 years-old), and they began hacking at her while she was asleep. Her confused screams woke the rest of the family. The Dad ran in to help the daughter, the wife called the police, the older daughter eventually jumped from her bedroom window, while the son hid in his closet. The dad fought off the attackers with his bare hands, losing his thumb in the process as well as having chunks of his skull and brain removed by the blows. He never stopped fighting back. Surprised with the resistance they were receiving, the attackers ran without collecting the gold they were looking for. He chased them down the driveway and passed out from blood loss.
No one died. The youngest daughter now has long scars down her face and head and was a near mute for years from the psychological trauma. Now she has blossomed in her later teenage years, participating in local school plays. The father had a steel plate installed to complete his skull, over which a skin graft from his buttock was placed. He's fully functioning. Other than a few social quirks and scars, he's fine.
The healing that this family had to go through astounds me, all because of one mistake. They're closer together now despite all the pain. The wife even affectionately calls her husband "my favorite b******d" every chance she gets.
Edit: I never wanted to confront and interrogate the family about this gruesome event, so I only heard the story through the grape vine. Some of my specifics are off, but by no means does that change how astonishing the family's story is. See this article for clarifications.
The son didn't ruin things. He just held a party. He even cleaned up. The people who committed the attacks ruined everything. That "black sheep" of the family can't be blamed for the actions of some people who were tempted by a rare coin and decided to try to m****r people for it.
Richard Jackson believes he's proof that anyone can recover from making the biggest mistake of their life. The top civil servant recently shared his story with the BBC, 20 years after his world was thrown into turmoil.
Jackson says a split-second error cost him his reputation, career and quite literally, almost his life, as he spiralled into a deep state of depression, consumed by shame and humiliation...
He had left highly classified documents on a train. A mistake that would soon become national news and send him into hiding at home.
I wish I didn’t have one for this...
At snowshoe doing some skiing with buddies. We’re at the top and I overhear a little girl (10-12) in blue ski pants and a white puffy coat complaining about her helmet being uncomfortable. Dad comes over and adjusts it, but the girl continues to complain. They make a plan, Dad and brother start to go one way, girl stays with mom. I hear clear as day from Dad “The helmet stays on or you stay in the lodge”. As soon as the father is out of site her mother tells her just to go toss it in her bag and that mom will deal with dad later about it.
Day goes on, we ski, wreck, get soaked, have fun. It’s sometime towards dinner and we’re at the bottom of the hill planning on one more run before we grab a bite to eat. The sun is low, it’s cloudy, the lights are starting to turn on. There’s an ear piercing scream as a young girl in blue pants and a white puffy jacket comes hurtling out of control through the flats and head first into a cement anchor for the lift line. The sound was sickening, the whole crowd seemed to drop silent as she hit with a sick wet thud. Someone behind me puked.. I do not know if she made it, I know she didn’t move again while ski patrol loaded her onto a board with a neck brace. I also don’t know if a helmet would have even helped..
Edit: I had to know, so I went through all my old email and papers. I think my trip was Feb 2008. So either she survived or it wasn’t reported.
OP's memory of the time period was off. Some Redditors sleuthed around and found that the girl did not survive. Her name was Laila Serpe.
This summer I was driving with my dad heading north around 9pm. There was this old jeep with its left signal turning signal on in the other lane coming south waiting for us to go so they can turn. All of a sudden, boom, the car flips up, onto its top, rolls over twice into a ditch/woods on the side of the road.
I pulled over. We ran out of the car. 1. 2. 3.
The car burst into flames.
I'm calling 911 and I look at the car and this teenager trying to break the windshield with a stick and he's yelling "f**k! No! No!". My dad goes and tries to break the windshield too.
More people are gathering around. This one guy tries to take a video and almost gets the s**t kicked out of him. The fire department are on their way.
At this point, all of the trees around the car are catching fire. They climb out the ditch because we don't know if they car will explode or not. There's nothing else that can be done until the fire dept shows up.
They take their sweet a*s time and put the fire out. The person in the car is long gone at this point and they don't even try to get him out.
So how did this all happen? Remember the guy with the stick who was trying to break the windshield. He was speeding and playing on his phone. He didn't see the jeep until the last second, tried to serve to avoid it and rear ended it at an angle.
The story goes on but that's the most important bit.
If you learn anything from this, don't use your phone for unnecessary s**t while driving; it's irresponsible and selfish.
Hard working spanish immigrant supporting his sick mother, 6 figure salary as a broker, drove a Mercedes, and had money to blow. Got hit with a DWI... license revoked, job lost and I supervised him for $12 an hour after the dust settled.
"He had been seconded from the Ministry of Defence to the Cabinet Office for a job in global terrorism, handling first-hand intelligence from GCHQ, MI5 and MI6," reports the BBC. "Leaving his Whitehall office one Monday evening, he swept up a pile of forms to fill in to make his secondment official."
When he got home, Jackson realized that he was in possession of "two papers on two classified subjects, and they were both top secret." He decided he'd return them to the office the following day, so he put them in a bright orange cardboard folder so that he wouldn't forget.
But that's exactly what happened.
After getting off the train, he "realised I hadn't got the folder... it just felt for a moment like the world had stopped."
i don't normally post but this just happened a few days ago my neighbors have been together for a few years and seemed pretty happy they had three kids but didn't marry yet.
One day the guy just completely loses it and accuses the girl of cheating (she wasn't) and demands to tell him with who. After some arguing he drops it then for about a week follows her around and she finally had enough.
About three days ago I see him looking PISSED and driving his kids somewhere but I don't think anything of it. Turns out he drove his kids to his grandparents that day then waited for the girl to show up at the house and they got into an argument she said she was leaving and he pulled out a gun and shot the ground and said if she leaves he'll k**l himself she turns around and immediately hears a gunshot and a thud. The guy shot himself over nothing.
I thought this would take an even darker turn with him taking the kids out first. Sounds like severe mental illnes broke out.
Worked as a gas station attendant and caught someone trying to steal. Guy was obviously sloshed, could barely walk. He grabbed some chips during the 2am beer rush and shoved them in his shirt, thinking I was too busy to notice or something.
I called him out and yelled at him. Told him I saw him steal and to put it back, then told him to "Get the f**k out of my store, walk across the street, and never come back."
Apparently he didn't make it very far. Passed out in the road and got ran over and k****d almost immediately.
In first grade, I was at the first Tiger Cub meeting for kids and parents interested in Cub Scouts. The parents were hearing all the boring details about dues and fundraising, etc. We were playing tag or dodgeball, and one of the kids falls on the gym floor and slides quite a ways.
We all thought that was pretty fun, so we all start running and then falling on our stomachs to see how far we slide on the gym floor. One kid was way to close to the wall and slid head first into the wall pretty hard. He parents left with him and went to the emergency room. He was in special ed classes after that.
Fortunately, someone had found the papers. Unfortunately, the person had handed them over to the BBC. Jackson was subsequently suspended pending an investigation, and his face was plastered all over the news.
"The Cabinet Office found it was an act of gross misconduct and demoted him three grades. He was charged under the Official Secrets Act, avoided jail, and was fined £2,500," reports the BBC.
Even after the matter had been concluded, Jackson says he couldn't shake the feelings of shame, regret and humiliation. He even considered ending his life. But fortunately, his wife, family and others came to his rescue.
"I fixed very little myself," he says. "Lots of people fixed me."
Guy and girl I know. Life was good for them until the guy put his friends and alcohol before his girl. Girl breaks up with guy and he’s in s**t creek for a while. On girls birthday a couple years later, guy calls her up and wants to grab lunch. Long story short, they’re back together again. One night, the girls preexisting daughter gets into a wreck. She asks the guy to watch over her other 2 boys while she goes to help, but the guy is more focused on going out with his buddies. The kids are left alone for 2 hours. When she gets back, she packs his s**t and tosses it outside. A few weeks later, she finds out she’s pregnant. The guy doesn’t want anything to do with the kid, so she’s now a single mother of 4.
Fortunately, the girl was basically his crutches. He started going to bars and ended up with a Budweiser girl. Fast-forward 17 years and he’s practically living with her and their two kids in some sketch neighborhood. One’s 14 and deals m*******a and other s**t, has broken into a house with his friends, put under house arrest several times, and is pretty much hated by Bud girl. The other is only 10 and has to deal with the 14 year old’s bullying. Their relationship is literally forced as he couldn’t live without her. They constantly fight and argue, there’s not a week that goes by without some argument.
Original girl, however, managed to raise her 4 kids and eventually found love again. She married him in June and is doing just fine. 2 of her kids are now married and have two kids each, and the 3rd has a son.
And I’m the 4th.
Was a bouncer. Have seen guys get in drunken fights and usually did not intervene if they occur off property.
Saw two guys one night get into a stupid brawl over nonsense and one of them hit the ground.
Buddy never woke up.
This kid went from having not a major problem in the world to becoming a felon.
Work at a nursing home. Patient was getting on a nurse's nerves so she said aloud she'd "give the old f**k the wrong meds and laugh while he codes". Patient had a sudden code anMNd d**d the same day. Went from a hateful and insensitive remark that would be a write up to a formal police investigation for m****r.
Edit-typo.
Jackson eventually left Civil Service. After exploring other opportunities, he decided to use his own mistake to help others. He trained to be a life coach and went on to set up a coaching company called NewDay, which specializes in helping people deal with handling distressing material. "I could tell my story... and there'd be a point to it," he told the BBC. "There'd be a reason for what I did."
He still hasn't forgiven himself for that fateful error but is in a better place mentally and teaches others that there is always a way back from the biggest mistake of your life. "You can be in a really bad place, and you can still stand up, and you can get through it and there are ways to help yourself do that and get help," he says.
So what's his advice to others who think they've completely ruined their lives?
I use to live on a decent size lake, from my vantage point to the other side was probably a good 1/4 mile, I had my eye on one boat, no idea why but I had a weird feeling. I kept watching as they got closer to shore with three teenage girls behind them on a tube.
The driver (who was very drunk) made a correction which in turn swung the girls at high speed towards the shore and right into a steel dock. The three girls hit the dock at around 40mph k*****g one of them on impact, putting another in a coma which unfortunately, eventually died months later and left the survivor with permanent physical damage.
Not only did this guy destroy two families lives in a matter of a few seconds, he's now in prison for life and some spectators will never forget the sound of a human body collapsing upon contact with a steel dock, let alone the horrifying screams from their mothers.
It's been a few years and I haven't touched alcohol since.
Guy from my highschool had a baby girl in is early 20s. The baby was still an infant and wouldn't stop crying. He tried rocking her, but it wasn't working and he got frustrated. I don't know the specifics of what happened, but the baby finally stopped crying, but was unresponsive. Took her to the hospital and they found that the she had Shaken Baby Syndrome and the baby later passed away. He lied to police and the doctors about having anything to do with it initially, but later admitted to shaking the baby when he was frustrated. Was found guilty of neglect that resulted in d***h of a dependent. 30 years in jail.
Guy I went to school with, we'll call him Jake, had a full ride to great college football program. He was one of the best athletes I've ever seen.
Went to a party and someone told him he'd f**k it up just like his brother did (his brother did f**k up a full ride, to a lesser school though). Jake didn't take kindly to this, smashed an empty bottle of Jack Daniels over the guy's head, causing serious damage.
Lost his full ride, stayed around my home town, d**d 2 years later in a motorcycle accident.
Jackson advises that you get the dark thoughts out of your head. He says it's easy to go from "I made a terrible mistake" to "I am a worthless person." Try to write down your thoughts or speak to someone so that your mind has a chance to slow down.
He also advises that you don't lose sight of your successes. Don't let one mistake define who you are. "You are not that mistake. You are still the person who existed before it, and there can still be a person after it whom you haven't met," says Jackson.
He also suggests identifying what you can and can't fix. "If you've caused harm, take responsibility: apologise and put things right where you can. But don't assume responsibility for things that were never yours to carry," advises Jackson.
Good friend of mine in High School was on a full ride sports scholarship at a state university as the starting pitcher. This f*****g kid could pitch 95 mph in High School and after 6 months he could get over 100mph. This kid had the perfect life. Anyway, he wasn't content with the money mom and dad were feeding him on a silver spoon, so he started selling aderall for extra money. He was buying it in Mexico and transporting it in his $60,000 truck. One time he was too high while transporting and passed out behind the wheel. He rolled the truck and the latch for the bed cover broke open and pills flew everywhere over the road. He is now looking at up to 15 years in prison.
Gambling. My friend's cousin gambled his Student Loan of £15,000 and lost it. He tookout a loan to cover it and lost that gambling too. He had to leave uni as he couldn't pay the fees. He gambled afterwards too and requested the casinos bar him. He now gambles online.
The gambling industry is pure evil and has destroyed countless lives. They are a major donor to all of Australia's main political parties (except for the Greens, who don't take corporate donations).
Had a guy get busted for drinking and driving during his first month at his new base (Air Force). He was a brand new Airman and his leadership spun the story that he was young, learned his lesson, etc etc and managed to let him stay in. He lost a stripe and got paperwork but could continue his career.
No less than a month later, he gets another DUI. Bam, career over, out of the Airforce, no chance to ever rejoin. Oh, and a bit of jail time and a suspended drivers license.
So what do you think he does? He goes to a party, gets s**t-faced drunk, grabs his keys and tries to drive home without a license.
Cops catch him. Third DUI within just a few months period, with a suspended license, resulting in several months in jail and basically no chance of employment. Not as bad as some of the stories here, but it was pretty crazy to see someone's brand new career fall to pieces so fast, even with good leadership.
Happened in Tuscon, AZ.
The team at A Conscious Rethink adds that sometimes, that massive mistake might be just what you need in order to restart your life.
"This entire situation may feel utterly awful, and although you might not believe it right now, this can be a blessing if you allow it to be. After all, when you’re working with a blank slate, then a complete re-ordering of your world is more within your grasp," they say.
"When you have nothing, then you have nothing to lose," they add. "And thereby, with the desperate fire and courage pounding through your chest, you can make incredible things happen in a very short amount of time."
A girl I know is doing it right now. She's going between boyfriends that openly cheat on her and refuses to aknowledge it. She's also in college, but does very little work and actually has a friend do her homework for her in one class. Once this is known, she'll probably get kicked out. She used to be best friends with my sister, but all that turned her away.
Old high school friend of mine (nice guy, but REALLY naive) started dating this one girl he met working at a restaurant. Seemed fine until she moved in with him, child from a previous relationship in tow a couple months later. She never mentioned it before then.
He told me and some other friends about it and got upset When I said she was manipulating him, and haven't heard from him since.
Last I heard he's gotten her pregnant. And still works at that restaurant for a little more than minimum wage. He's 22.
Our High School Valedictorian was the smartest kid I knew. He was an introvert, but he had the answer to every question known to man in class. One month before graduation he was bragging about Ivy league schools that accepted him and which one he was going to choose. Three weeks before graduation, someone found a note he wrote that fell out of his bag. It was a "hit list" of students that he hated and he wanted to k**l or hurt. Within 48 hours he was suspended from school, not allowed to attend graduation and we heard the Ivy league schools all dropped him. All I remember was him getting handcuffed in class and him screaming it was a joke. 10 years later and I heard he lives with his mom and works at Best Buy. (nothing wrong with that for some of you!)
Worked a grocery store bakery. New assistant manager for the bakery comes in and immediately "adjusts the work flow to be more efficient", aka dumps all his work on the already enormously busy evening workers. He also complains about the quality of everyone's work and s***s on everyone under him constantly, seemingly just because he can. He especially has a bone to pick with me because I listen to the wrong talk radio station or something, and he goes to extra lengths to insult me openly and leave me tons of extra work.
One day shortly before close, he leaves the bakery with an empty cake box. He comes back with it full and taped up neatly. He leaves it on the counter saying he needs to hit the bathroom, so I pick it up... and it's heavy as hell. No way that's a cake. So I phone the acting manager and report theft. They checked the cameras and sure enough, he had filled the box with expensive steaks.
Company pushed charges and prosecuted him to the fullest extent possible. They were big on making examples at that point to curb the high levels of employee theft. He got absolutely f****d and was unemployable overnight. Sold his house, lost his wife... don't know what happened after that but I bet it wasn't good.
TL;DR assistant bakery manager treats me like s**t, I catch him stealing steaks, company destroys his life.
My brother in the 70's protesting the war in Vietnam. I was in high school at the time, he was a stringer for some antiwar publications.
He got into his head to try home brewing some explosives. Has a successful test and was making another batch in his 3rd (top) floor apartment. His buddy walked in with a lit cigarette and boom.
Lost his left hand at the wrist, finger on right hand, burst both eardrums. Was wearing a heavy leather jacket and years later was still pulling the remains of the motar & pestal out of his chest. Jacket might have saved his life. He recalls seeing the fire start and waking up on the far side of the room, the room the on fire.
Small town. My mom was the ER charge nurse when he came in.
A friend of mine was a very accomplished international business consultant. But, he drank too much and was lonely and divorced. He met a woman with two daughters. They hit it off. Eventually, she loses her job (music teacher) and he asks her to move in with him. Because...he was lonely and generally a nice guy. She starts turning psycho on him. All his friends said kick her out. After several months, he agrees. She gets wind of it. She waits until he’s out drinking one night. Has her daughters call him for a ride “because Mom can’t be found”. He picks the girls up (drunk) and takes them back home to his place. Passes out. Wakes up to police banging on the door. Mom had the girls strip him down and pose with him. By some miracle of technology, the cops had the pics within hours. He was convicted last year. Will d*e in prison. During the trial, it’s discovered she did this twice before in the Eastern EU. Prosecutor successfully kept this out of the trial on some international technicality. He’s f****d for life for being a nice drunk.
Here in Utah a few years ago an immature mother decided to take her daughter's side in a spat her daughter was having with one of her friend's.
Mom decided to photoshop a picture of the friend's head onto a photo of a n**e woman. Then she proceeded to print out 50 copies and hang them up all over the daughter's school.
The police didn't care that the images were fake. They charged her as if she was posting real n**e pictures of the girl — 50 individual felony counts. I wonder if that stupid woman is still in prison.
My sisters boyfriend was dared to rob a gas station with a BB gun. He's now doing 8 years for armed robbery. The kicker is they offered him a plea deal that would have given him 4 years jail and then probation and he said no.
Cheating.
She was unhappy, but wasn't communicating with her husband. Over a couple months, the mood gets tense. One day she doesn't come home and says she needs time to think. A few weeks go by and it all starts to come out that she's living with someone else (who is an ex-con for a*****t with a deadly weapon), smoking weed and drinking all the time, wanting nothing to do with her husband and 2 kids.
A few months ago they were a normal family, but she dumped all of it to go party. People separate all the time, but the way she did it was like a total burn of the bridge. It was unnecessary. She keeps saying her ex-husband is a great guy and she's doing this for the kids, but she's only seen them a couple days in the last 2 months. He might have to pay her child support since he makes more while she does absolutely nothing for them.
Her friends and family have pretty much disowned her. She f****d her life up because she couldn't communicate with her husband and decided to burn it all down instead.
EDIT: For those questioning why he would have to pay her money. This is in Florida, he's trying to get full 100% custody of the kids but that is really difficult in that state (without tons of hard evidence that she's unfit, which he doesn't have yet). If they do something like 60/40 in his favor, he will have to pay her child support since his income is higher. He's got a lawyer, but divorce law is not easy to wade through. He's weighing his options and hoping to get 100%.
It was in the local news, quite a few years ago now. Two young girls get into an altercation at a Party...on a Wednesday...on a school night. Girl A decides that the best way to resolve the conflict is to stab Girl B. All this occurred over a boy.
Girl B d**s.
Girl A sent to jail.
Graduation was literately 2 months away.
Good game...
Dumb girl at my school posted a picture of herself saying "that's 200 less Mexicans trying to cross the border" on her story after the earthquake in Mexico City. She got d***h threats, kids at my school ran around with Mexican flags, and she ruined her families life because they had to move.
Edit: My schools near Dallas Texas and she was a junior. The twitter storm about her snap blew up so much that local Mexican news channels reported on it.
Yeah, not a good idea to post things like that in Texas, Arizona, or Southern California >_>
Guy I went to school with about 10 years ago, set his house on fire for insurance money with the intention of getting out his stepfather but mercy k*****g his own mother who had terminal cancer. It was idiotic at best and evil at worst. The problem was his stepdad never got out and he died too. And the cops could tell it was him because he had gasoline burns on his hands. So since he was 16 when he did he got double involuntary manslaughter and won’t be released until he’s 35.
Friend of mine got into the same college I did. We were both excited to know someone when we started school. She received a full scholarship for diving. We weren’t super close in high school and didn’t hang out outside of it. So, we said goodbye after graduation and didn’t speak over the summer.
Fast forward to move in day at college. I was walking towards the cafeteria after moving in and gave her a call. I asked where she was and she replied, “I’m pregnant.” I really hope her life turned out well, but I have no clue. That was the last we spoke. I can only imagine throwing away a full ride to college would f**k you up.
I was eating lunch in downtown Athens, GA, on game day. (If you know SEC football, you know how crazy it can get.)
A drunk freshman sorority sister comes in, orders her food, and asks for a water cup. Then she goes over to the soda machine and proceeds to go put soda into the water cup. The manager saw and would have none of her apologies or pleading. He called the cops. Cop comes, girl takes breathalyzer, cop finds her fake ID and flask. On go the cuffs and off she goes in a police car. All within 10 minutes, and all over a $1 soda. Tough break for a dumb 18 year old.
This story still breaks my heart. I have a friend who got a great job in the natural gas industry after graduating from college at 22. He was making loads of money, was smart, charismatic, and overall a good guy.
After working for 2 years and saving thousands, he quit that job to become an entrepreneur. He got into bed with a shady salesman and tried selling a very niche product to large businesses without having any previous business experience. His money started to dwindle and he ended up starting to sell d***s to make up for it. Why not go back to work? Who knows.
This d**g business started to grow and ended up crossing state borders which brought the FBI into play. Before he knew it, he was arrested, his partners stole all his cash, and he's currently in prison for what may end up being a minimum of 10 years. Hes 27 years old. It's awful.
There's a video of this girl in a dance competition in a club. She's twerking upside down in a headstand. She slips and her body falls down over her head, snapping her neck. She died from twerking. That has to be a tough funeral to get through.
Had a cr****y science teacher in highschool. She would always just write s**t on the whiteboard and tell us to spend the rest of the class copying it down while she goes and gets a coffee from Maccas. One time she left the class during a presentation just to change her shoes because her current ones were looking a bit 'worn out'.
Anyways so everyone was fed up with her s**t so much that when she left the classroom again one of the honor kids spat into her coffee cup. Teacher came back and saw a long a*s spit going from her coffee cup to the kids mouth.
As much as we had her back, the other teachers didn't listen to us, took the teachers side, and EXPELLED her.
Really tough since getting expelled was a major upset for her family she ended up moving back to her hometown and is helping out at her parents farm.
NOTE: not sure if she 'f****d up her life' per se, since she looks happy helping out her fam but she had a really bright future ahead of her, and probably still does if she puts her mind to it.
I know this guy who had a really s****y upbringing (growing up in the slums, absentee alcoholic/d**g a****t parents, a ton of brothers and sisters) but despite all of that, was actually brilliant. He wasn’t planning on going to college because he’s in the ghetto, he can’t afford college, he thinks he just needs to go straight to work. Well his gf/fwb fills out all of these college apps behind his back and he gets accepted into MIT! Well he gets there and almost immediately became an alcoholic, got drunk and smashed up a bunch of cars, got arrested and kicked out of school. He went to rehab a few times and he’s clean now working as a dishwasher at a diner that his sister manages. Tragic.
Im sure this will get buried but growing up I was best friends with 2 brothers. They always rough housed and what not no big deal. Both of them are in the bed of a truck and start pushing each other and one pushed the other of the bed of the truck. His brother is pretty much a vegetable now and has no movement from his neck down. It was crazy just messing around caused that. the other brother drank him self to d***h over the next 8 years because he was so messed up on what happened.
My brother and I inherited 20k each after our grandfather passed. He withdrew it all from his bank before going to jail for a DUI. He hid it in the house where he had been staying, and his room mates robbed him of 13k in cash and sold all of the musical equipment he had bought with his inheritance.
In grade school an acquaintance who we'll call Mike loosened a kid's bicycle brakes at recess. The bike had been locked to the rack in the area where we had our outside time. Not really sure if it was malicious or just dumb kid stuff, but the kid whose bike it was was very smart. Probably top 3 smartest in our grade. I think it was 6th or 7th grade. So later that day the kid is riding to the library and flying down a hill on his final couple blocks. There's a stop sign at which a car stops in front of him. Bicyclist hits his brakes and nothing happens. Kid slams into the back of the car. He had a helmet on, but still suffered brain damage. He became very slow and would do weird things in class like blow fart noises with his mouth mid class thinking it was funny. His mom was one of the ladies who would volunteer at the school and monitor lunch and whatnot. She went from being a really tough lady who most of us were kind of scared of, to the sweetest lady ever. She was just happy her son was alive even if he was permanently brain damaged. To this day nobody knows about the brake loosening and I've wanted to tell his family, but that would be just an utterly selfish thing to do only for my own closure. This was over 20 years ago. Kid's life was ruined.
Guy I was in the army with fell asleep in his tank while on overwatch. He was 12 years in. Soon to be E7. Had no life or interest outside of the army. He got chaptered out over falling asleep. Not saying he didn't deserve it. But it f****d up his entire life with a quickness.
I live in South Florida and know of at least three stories of people who dove into the ocean or intracoastal waterway Head first thinking the water was deeper. Seconds later their friends had to fish them out of the water because they had broken their necks.
This is particularly prevalent in places where people dock up boats near sand bars, and then party. They dock at high tide and a few hours later the tide is going out and they (drunk or half drunk) fail to account for that.
This happened to a friend of a friend just 2 months ago. Paralyzed from chest down.
Had a friend back in high school who was nice but kind of a pushover. We went to the same college but he started drinking too much and transferred to a smaller school back home.
One night he got blackout drunk and decided to drive home. He ran over 5 international students that were walking home on the side of the road, including his own roommate. K****d 3 of them instantly and hospitalized 2.
He was so drunk he didn’t even realize what he’d done. He woke up the next morning to the cops banging down his door.
Edit: Yikes this exploded. And I got the number of deaths wrong initially. Apparently 2 made it out the hospital. And yeah, he was able to mow down all 5 without stopping. He was one of those country boys driving a big-a*s pickup truck...
Bride at my cousins wedding got caught by grooms father f*****g the best man.
She's homeless now. Reputation was destroyed and she got fired for something else.
Last year a kid in my school was caught chewing gum in class, but he denied it so the teacher checked him bag for gum.
The teacher found a s**t ton of weed and other d***s that he was selling to other students.
He got expelled and his parents have sent him to live with his grandparents in Africa for the rest of his life.
I went to college with a girl who was poised to go to nursing school. Nursing was her whole life and everyone knew she'd make it right to the top. Then she was careless and suddenly became pregnant. Last I heard she's a cleaner with 3 kids on benefits.
If she had 3 kids it sounds like she might have chosen to be a mom and skip career. She provides for them if she is a cleaner, even if some bemefits are needed. So if she choose this, be happy for your friend instead if belittling her choices.
My cousin who is lucky goes to the casino and hits like 10 jackpots that night. Has like 36,000 in his name. Since then he's gone broke and is currently in rehab for overdosing twice. I called it when I said he'd od this year. Worst part is he tried shooting up and hit a nerve so half his body is limp, might have to amputate his arm.
19 year old guy drunk 1 night during winter.
Gets wasted in a bar, thrown out by the bouncer, gets mad at the bouncer and starts calling him stuff. He argues he wants his jacket, doesnt get it, was told to come back when hes sober. Takes a p**s on the outside of bar, police sees it, he gets pissed at the police, shows them the middle finger, kicks one officer in the thigh.
Charged with violence towards a police officer, pissing in public, showing finger to police and drunken misorderly(?) conduct.
2000$ fine, 1 year jailtime, can never travel to i.e. USA, never study for lawyer, police, doctor, teacher etc, never join the military.
I worked in surveillance at a casino. Many staff were partying together for one guy's birthday, which is normal, but the next day, one of the bartenders was still partying hard and had to be asked to leave.
A moment later I get a call from the pit boss that said bartender was on the roof and I was to summon the police to have him removed [without relying too heavily on gravity]. While on the call, I received another call to make that an ambulance as the man had jumped from the 40' peak of the roof to the pavement below, shattering all bones around and below his waist.
Found after the fact that he'd been on a cocktail of recreational d***s and was on the roof to claim a $20 wager that he wouldn't jump. I saw him years later still wheelchair bound.
Before I get into this you gotta understand what our high school waivers are. Some people here aren't built for college, so we have career classes here (carpentry, electrical, engineering, graphic arts, culinary arts etc). If you take these classes you basically become an apprentice in those fields and you can choose to not take the language and art classes necessary for college. The newly found class period openings are replaced with your Career class, and you leave the waivers classes.
So in high school there was this 10/10 girl who was stunning and absolutely brilliant. She had a full ride to whatever school she wanted literally anywhere, and she chose to be a surgeon. She got into an argument in my Spanish class, threw a tantrum down to the guidance office and signed the waiver. In about 5 minutes she threw a way more money (like $300k) and future than anyone else had at the school in years.
A little late to the thread, but I had a buddy who was the nicest guy in high school. He was the type of guy to give you his coat in the pouring rain and think nothing of it. He was an athlete in high school (cross country runner) and a marine after graduating.
A little while ago he was out drinking, got behind the wheel, and hit an old man crossing the street. The old man died and my buddy is serving a sentence for it. He had everything going for him and then he k****d a man. How to f**k up two lives with one dumb decision.
Knew a guy my ex bf was friends with. Well, they had a falling out but the guy's cousin also hung out with us. So, that's how my ex found out that his ex-friend took a company tow truck to a party with his gf, got drunk, let his gf drive the tow truck to go home. She drove way too fast, lost control, the truck flipped over a few times. She wasn't wearing a seatbelt, so she went flying out of the truck. He was still in the truck when it burst into flames. Both died at the scene.
