World’s Oldest Panda Celebrates 37th Birthday And Sets Guinness World Record

On July 28th, Jia Jia, a famous and beloved panda at Hong Kong’s Ocean Park, turned 37 years old and became a Guinness World Record holder for being the oldest captive panda ever! 37 years may not seem like very much to you, but that’s 111 in human years!

To mark the occasion, a special giant cake was made out of ice and vegetables. Unsurprisingly, however, the old granny stuck with what she knows and loves – bamboo shoots. She barely touched her present!

The previous record holder for oldest panda ever in captivity, Dudu, was born in 1962 and lived until 1999, reaching the ripe old age of 36 years. The average lifespan of a giant panda is only 18-20 years in the wild and 30 in captivity, so both Dudu and Jia Jia’s milestones are impressive, indeed!

Happy B-Day beautiful Jia Jia! Smart girl, she's saving the veggie-ice cake for later, after the hard ice melts she can get right to the veggies! Wonder if she is related to Pan Pan?

Why do those who take care of her not make a 'cake' out of foods she likes?

Maybe she does like those foods, but at her age, could be she can't chomp that hard ice like a younger panda. I'm thinking she'll tackle it once the ice melts down and she can easily get to the veggies.
