The problem lies deeper than this. We have no statistics at hand about actual violent crime. The reason these people wield weapons or bring dogs is the _felt_ threat, be it a real one or an imaginary. And that they need to feel endagered while doing a perfectly normal thing is sad.

Although I cannot find the source right now, I remember reading a report from a self-defense specialist on the same line of argumentation: most people without training to use weapons, and especially to use them in situations of mental uproar (fight-or-flight) will likely do more harm to themselves than to the attacker. However, I guess most people where these things to increase their feeling of safety. Thus, it is security theater, just like much of the actions at an airport. The real question is: do we need this security theather because we are rightfully afraid, or is there a perceived yet unreal danger because our societies do not make us feel safe?

As one of the posters said: The little ring knife is for getting DNA and not for fully protecting someone.

To my knowledge, the ring-chain alarm devices are pretty recommendable. Easy to use and loud enough to get rid of attackers-by-chance. And the plus is that you cannot hurt yourself with them.

Take a self-defense class. Be aware of surroundings. Be sure someone knows when you're headed out and again when you return (quick text to a friend or relative). A whistle that's very easy to access and doesn't require a lot of breath to make a very loud sound. Don't wear both headphones, even if you can hear what's going on around you with them in, they still create a barrier to awareness. Don't rely on physical means of defense like knives, pepper spray, or guns unless you have been thoroughly trained and get refresher training frequently.

I think the apps that signal the police are pretty good. Some of them make really loud alarm sounds while also contacting the police.

Get her lessons in Krav Maga. There's a video going around on youtube, about a teenage girl fighting her boy friends in a park. She beat every single one of them via her training in Krav Maga. No out-and-out violence. Just knowing how to wrestle, know pressure points, and how to disable / choke hold the other person. This chick, was amazing - and a LOT smaller than all the guys there. One big guy, kept insisting on "giving it another go", and refusing to tap out (despite his mates telling him to). He passed out while in a hold, at least 4 times. This guy was BIG!! Like double-her-size kinda big. So, yeah... Krav Maga would be my suggestions. (And as a chick growing up with boys, I can attest to knowing how to fight in a similar way is of great benefit. Karate and all that fancy stuff, doesn't always work. Knowing how to not be scared of someone trying to physically pick you up, and knowing how to make them fall & drop you... IS INVALUABLE!!!).

I heard on an Oprah show many years back about safety, that shouting 'fire' rather than 'help' can get a better response from the public. People hear 'fire' and look around/outside to see where, and once they see your situation there is more social pressure to intervene. People hear 'help' and they think oh a domestic or they just don't want to get involved.

Send her to Krav Maga lessons. That's one of the most effective self defense systems developed by the Israelian military. Not only will she know how to defense herself, but she will feel much more secure and her body language will tell that to potential attackers.

Don't give her a knife, she can face prosecution if she does damage with a knife. Instead I would recommend a pepper spray and a whistle!

Teach her to always trust her gut feeling, even, or should I say, especially, with guys/men that she knows. If it doesn't feel quite right, teach her to leave or seek company. If there is a situation, to SCREAM and Fight. The key chain alarm that Wanda recommends seems fine. Knives and guns are too easily used against her anyway.

Information; Talk about safety with her. Watch your drink, never leave it alone. Stay aware of who's around and their energy. If possible go with a friend. If she will depend on a whistle or weapon, keep it handy, easy to use and know how to use it. A scream is handier than a whistle, bite if they try to cover your mouth.

Electric stun-gun or my favorite for night running - telescopic batton with superstrong flash light. And the most important thing. No matter what you decide to get, get PROPER TRAINING with it. You can protect yourself against a machete with a pen if you know what are you doing. Training, training, training. Also, if you jog for better condition, you may practise Krav Maga instead. The level of immediate stress relieve is about the same but the level of long time stress (you know, feeling defenseless) is gone in just few months.

Even a small taser would be good... if she goes to concerts or certain clubs she will not be allowed to take in A taser or pepper spray or even a small knife but check out the damsel in defense website they have a lot of useful things. Also if you do end up choosing a knife make damn sure she knows how to use it. My fear of carrying one is that I don't know how to use them properly and I really don't want to supply the attacker with a weapon to kill me... I hope that makes sense

Best protection for a person which is not physically strong (like a small girl) is a pepper spray or a huge dog. If the person is adult, definitely a compact gun. Otherwise: Whistle - totally useless. Knife - if the person is not trained it can do more harm than good. Electrical rod - too much contact, very tricky to use (clothes function as insulation).

Denmark is one of the safest countries in the world because it treats its citizens well, economically and medically, and there is therefore less crime. That doesn't make forcing people to walk around defenseless right, and it only works out because of the first part.

Same here in Finland (although me and some others in my town often carry a knife, but not in self defence or attack purpose)

I'm Eastern European. We have the same gun laws as Denmark, but more crime.

There are a lot of factors involved. It’s a huge stretch to say that Denmark is safe because of the lack of pepper spray.

US media loves drama.

That highlights the differences between our countries. If I had done that I would have had the armed defenders squad arresting me pretty darn quick!

The day before yesterday I was on an excursion to a botanical garden in the middle of nowhere. After lunch at an even more remote place, the bus broke down. I had somewhere to be in the afternoon so I simply took off walking, and there was another woman who decided to join me. After walking for some four kilometers we heard motor noice coming our way, and ... broke out laughing when we saw this beaten up old truck loaded with wood coming around the bend. Sure enough, the guy stopped, took us aboard and drove us to the bus station in the nearest town, another 15 - 16 kilometers away. It never even entered my mind that I would be anything but SAFE.
