First dates can reveal a lot about two people. At least, they are supposed to do so.  Sometimes, a few questions are enough to realize that the chemistry is not there. I used to take my dates to my favorite place in the city, and if I wasn’t enjoying it, I knew that things were going nowhere. Usually, that is where the date ends, and everyone goes home.

That was not quite what happened to a woman who recently shared her experience on Reddit after a first date at an arcade took a deeply unsettling turn. What started as a normal evening quickly changed when a conversation exposed some serious differences between the two of them, leaving her looking for a way to end the date safely and as soon as possible.

Do you know why we even call them “red flags”? It goes back to 1777, when a red flag was a sign of danger or warning. Before it became part of dating language, people used red flags to show that something was wrong. In this story, the woman kept noticing more and more as her date’s behavior became more troubling.

You probably understand why I brought up red flags, since the man in this story made them obvious. But what about the signs that are harder to spot? The National Domestic Violence Hotline points out that controlling, intimidating, dismissive, or boundary-crossing behavior can show up slowly and be easy to miss.

Allegedly, toxic behavior does not always mean a relationship will turn harmful, but it can be a sign of a serious problem. The Hotline suggests learning to recognize these warning signs instead of brushing them off as just personality quirks. If you notice toxic behavior, it’s important to take action.

For example, political views can be a major red flag when people are deciding whether to start a relationship. In the story, the woman was clearly unsettled by her date’s political comments.

Research shows that 27% of Americans looking for a relationship said they probably or definitely would not date a Republican, and 26% said the same about someone who voted for Hillary Clinton. These numbers do not mean couples have to agree on every political issue.

These findings show that politics can affect dating choices, and talking about politics can reveal big differences in values. Still, more than half of people see political differences as a deal breaker.

Another important issue in this story is the comments about victim blaming. This shifts attention away from the person who crossed a boundary and puts it on the choices of the person who experienced it. No matter what someone says, wears, or does, they are not responsible for another person’s harmful actions. The responsibility always belongs to the person who crosses the line.

This matters because many commenters focused on the woman’s choices instead of what happened after she ended the date. Women often have to think about harassment, intimidation, and personal safety when dating, which doesn’t seem fair at all. So, what can someone do in these situations?

Meeting in a public place can help if a date becomes uncomfortable because other people are nearby. The Ask for Angela initiative trains staff to notice signs of distress and respond quietly when someone asks for help. They can move the person to a safer spot and get management involved.

The training includes a scenario where a woman tells staff her date will not let her leave. Staff are advised to listen calmly, reassure her, ask what she wants, move her to a safer area, and alert the manager instead of confronting the date.

For someone in this situation, it helps to stay near other people. The National Domestic Violence Hotline suggests staying in public places if someone’s behavior feels unsafe. In this case, the woman stayed inside the arcade while employees and security watched from outside, rather than walking home alone.

Another helpful step is to talk to people you trust about what is going on. The Hotline suggests letting friends, family, or coworkers know about any safety concerns and even coming up with a code word to use if you need help. In one case, a woman’s friend stayed on the phone and helped her keep track of the situation from a distance.

A third step is to keep records of any troubling behavior. The Hotline recommends saving texts, emails, voicemails, and other messages, since these can show a pattern of unwanted actions. While posting updates on Reddit is one way to share information, keeping private records and talking directly with trusted people is usually a safer and more reliable way to save important details.

A bad date can end with nothing more than an awkward goodbye, but some situations demand a much firmer exit. Knowing your boundaries, trusting your instincts, and knowing where to turn for help can make a real difference when an ordinary event starts to feel like you are in danger.

Do you think the woman was right to end the date when his behavior crossed the line? What would you have done in her place? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Commenters supported the woman and many saw a silver lining in her date revealing his true colors so quickly

Why isnt "Call him the P word, who needs to keep their hands to themselves, as loud as you can" an option in the poll? Cmon, we unhinged people want to vote on the poll too!

I would still alert the cops that he’s in the area, along with giving them an heads up about the deaths and other violence he’s been responsible for, and for them to look him up on NCIC to see if he has any outstanding warrants to pick him up for. At least, if there’s nothing they can bring him in on (which I highly doubt), at least it will let him know they know where he is, and are giving the other departments he’s been arrested in where he is as well. He should not be walking the streets, especially if he’s able to get a date from a “meet cute”, because he will do it again and again if he is not stopped. Horrifying thought of how very differently OP’s date with him could have ended, had she not been so clear thinking and got help getting away from him. He did stick round a very long time Hopi g to catch her outside and get her into his car. I shudder to think.
