Woman Captures Scared Dog Getting Dragged Into Kill Shelter By Owner, And His Reaction Will Break Your Heart

Our pets are much smarter than we give them credit for. Sometimes, they understand the situation perfectly and can sense what’s really happening. “Wait, we aren’t going to the park, you’re taking me to the vet!”

Ann Flores, who was visiting Harris County Animal Shelter in Houston, Texas, with a friend recently, saw a heartbreaking example of this unfold in front of her eyes. She was there because her friend was interested in adopting a dog, but before they could get that far she noticed a woman physically dragging her dog from the parking lot to the shelter door. This dog clearly knew that he was being abandoned, and wasn’t going willingly.

“He laid on his back and just rolled over,” Flores told The Dodo. “It was like he was saying, ‘Please don’t take me in here.”

Amazingly, there was another woman in the parking lot doing the exact same thing with a second dog. Flores captured the sad scenes with her camera, and was infuriated with the reactions of the women to their poor pups obvious distress. “They were both pulling, but the dogs wouldn’t budge,” Flores said. “They had to pick them up because they just would not move. They would not walk in there.”

“They didn’t care. They were just laughing and giggling because the dogs wouldn’t move. To them, it was just like throwing trash away. There was no remorse, nothing.”

Flores sent the footage to Harris County Animal Volunteers, who work to rehome dogs and cats from the shelter. It was uploaded alongside a plea to help the dogs, who they named Truman and Mandi. Time was of the essence, as the shelter was full and they were facing the prospect of euthanasia within days if no foster home was found.

Thankfully, the appeal to help the abandoned pups worked, and both Truman and Mandi have since found new humans. While they both face challenges in order to overcome their traumatic pasts, Truman and Mandi are making good progress, and are now showered with the love and affection they so desperately need! Scroll down below to see how they are coming along, and let us know what you think in the comments.

(h/t The Dodo)

“He laid on his back and just rolled over. It was like he was saying, ‘Please don’t take me in here’” remembers Ann Flores, the witness of the event

Another woman was dragging a second dog: “They had to pick them up because they just would not move”

“They didn’t care,” Flores said. “They were just laughing and giggling because the dogs wouldn’t move”

“To them, it was just like throwing trash away. There was no remorse, nothing”

The overcrowded shelter scheduled Truman for euthanasia on Monday – just four days after admission, and his sister Mandi for Tuesday

“Why get an animal if you’re not going to keep it and do this to them?” Flores sent the footage to the Harris County Animal Volunteers to save the dogs

And soon Truman found a home: “He was starting to warm up to me a bit in a 25-minute car ride, which you don’t often see”

“In just an hour, we saw a fantastic transformation of a dog who wouldn’t even walk and being flat on the ground and shaking…”

“…to feeling safe enough to sleep in the car and get close to me”

“He’s going to be just a fantastic dog to live with”

As for Mandi, she left the shelter a day after her brother

“She is missing fur all over her body. She has mange… and she was so timid and scared”

But her new owner Jackie Duncan is feeling hopeful and says “she has a ton of love in her”

People who saw this were split into two camps, and the first one was enraged

Much to my surprise people were defending the couple who took their dogs for death in a shelter. I find it very difficult to believe that people with financial hardships would be laughing at the dogs refusal to get up and walk. Thank goodness there are good people out there who do go to shelters just save an animal's life. Speaking for myself, I have to rescue dogs and I would get another one after one of my dogs departs life here on Earth

I agree that people who have to give up their pet wouldn't giggle. I have a friend who re homed her dog because he was aggressive, and she felt terrible even though he was in a better place. I think there is more to the story than what is being presented. Maybe the dogs weren't theirs.

"A dog is for life, not just for Christmas" this saying is 40 years old. The oldest dog ever, lived to be 29 years old. This means that every single dog alive now was born when this saying was known by the world, so how do these people get into this situation? Ignorance may be bliss, but this is just cruelty. At least there was a happy ending this time.

I pray my dogs live to be 29! They were both " thrown away" by ignorant people who didn't even bring them to a shelter ( abandoned by the side of a freeway and the other was left on a foreclosure) We can't imagine our life without them- it kills me to even go on vacation and leave them with my sister.... I say if you take on the responsibility of a dog then you take the responsibility to find that dog a great home when you can no longer take care of it.

Heartbreaking. I'm glad it was a happy ending for these dogs and they were adopted. That's not always the case though, unfortunately. In fact, more often than not, they aren't adopted.

Pets deserve forever homes - some are lucky enough to find them the first time around, many others are not so lucky. I was home #2 & 3 to my doggos, and now they're secure, safe and loved - forever. Hell, I would give up half of the remainder of my life to keep my boys with me until the end. At the end of the day, it's all about love. So go home tonight & give your fur babies LOTS of lovin!

Don't tell me those animals were in a state of panic. Those they trusted and loved betrayed them. I do not know the situation of the ppl, perhaps there is far more to the backstory than I can ever know. Maybe they were renting and told to get rid of the dog, or get thrown out. I try to understand and be compassionate that they at least did not leave them by the road or tied up to a tree somewhere (or on a train line in a box like mine was). I swear I would sell my organs before giving up my dogs, and my mum said she would sooner live on the street with her dog that give her up.

Ugh we had people like this with rabbits. One came to the rabbit breeder I worked with and asked to exchange her male rabbit for a female one cause she didn't want him anymore. Breeder refused outright of course. we are not sure what happened to the male but the breeder refuse to sell rabbits to her now. He also have had people give him back rabbit cause they were no longer small and cute. Very often people have over fed the rabbits like 99% pellets instead of 8% pellets, and 90% hay they told them. My past rabbits only lived 4-6 years, I read up on rabbits, learned from the breeder who deal with rabbits for 40+ years and now my oldest is turning 10 and my youngest turning 9 years old. Learn about he pet you are getting and what they need. Ps for people with rabbits in cages, give the a couple of hours in a big pen so they can stretch their legs and jump around or they never walk again.

I will get downvoted for this comment. People here are being hypocritical. They (rightfully) criticize owners for abandoning their pets on the streets, saying "take them to a shelter!" And now, here they are, criticizing the owners for bringing their dogs to a shelter. We don't know the circumstances behind why these two women gave them up. I can only assume that people are responding to two things: 1. the attitudes the women displayed were horrible; and 2. the fact that it's a kill shelter. I wish circumstances were different, but I realize that overcrowding is a problem, and dogs do not do well in shelters without daily walks outside. I'm glad these two got adopted. I can only hope that the rest do, too.

I lived overseas in a country where MANY animals -- dogs, injured donkeys and horses, and other ill and injured animals were often simply abandoned, with vast indifference. Deeply regret that these women took their dogs to a shelter BUT it sure beats them NOT doing so! At least some dogs DO have a chance to be re-homed , and if not, euthanized.....dying slowly of starvation, dehydration -- possible while suffering also from life-ending injury or disease....that's even more horrific. And, in fact, these two dogs DID get rescued by two caring people. My next door neighbor's dog had a similar story - he went to the Animal Control shelter here -- and got his new owner -- in the parking lot outside the facility, when his former owner was just unloading him from the car! I adopted two dogs from pounds/shelters.....and many others gets their new family members from these often very overloaded facilities. The problem is too many unspayed dogs & puppy mills!

How can you not care for a pet? There is no financial excuse to give a family member away. Pet food isn't expensive unless you get the c**p with fancy advertising - a dog will happily eat rice and carrots.

I'd gone out and beat those "owners" with every bit of strength I had then more. After that I would explain everything to police, get photos of the license plates, gone to their homes and resumed the a*s kickings. People who take joy in torturing animals and laughing at their pain deserve equal torture under the law. And we should all deliver that torture. Come on now, you all know you are riled up enough to do it and support it.

Wow, you sure are tough. No better way to show how much compassion you have than to beat somebody. Then you'd go and stalk them and continue the beatings? Great example to set. Who was torturing animals in this story? Also good to see you are ready to play judge, jury and executioner based on one side of a story. I think you should eat a snickers (and you should stop lying about telling the cops you committed assault and will do it again).

Two women took two dogs to what was likely to be their deaths. They giggled when the dogs resisted. One dog had mange which had apparently not been treated. There is no indication that the cause of the abandonment was financial hardship or the need to feed their children. Even taking the dogs to the shelter instead of abandoning them may have been to avoid legal charges or to make sure the dogs didn't show up at home again. Based on the evidence these women should not be given charge of so much as a goldfish.

People have been getting pets for all the wrong reasons. "It's Christmas; it's cute; my kid has been begging me for one..." I volunteer with a rescue group and have heard lots of the stories. "It's un-trainable." which usually means the person doesn't have the patience or time to train the dog. "It is too much for my family" = we didn't do the research that the cute puppy will be over 80lbs, and require lots of exercise - and it gets into things (bad dog is usually a bored dog). And the worse one in my opinion: "It's too old. We don't want an old dog. It's too much trouble" = he/she isn't cute any more and we don't want to have him/her around. I wish people would get it into their heads that getting a pet (no matter the species) is a commitment! Not a toy to be discarded when they are tired of it. As for a financial issues, or having to move and cannot take the animal - I get that. But take the time to find a responsible way to rehome.

I think people who give up their animals should be fined. We need a system of accountability....Like: when you get a pet in the first place, there should be some sort of official registration and tracking, so that if you ever abandon your animal, there are real consequences.....just like child abandonment.

And to think they are probably around children, the elderly and other vulnerable beings! It doesn't bear thinking about. I can see both sides of this issue. All the animals I've ever owned have been adopted from rescue services or shelters. I've never "turned in" a dog to a shelter and can't imagine that I ever would. When I bring an animal into my home, it's absolutely a "fur-ever" situation. However, that said, I live in a rural area which seems to have become the "unwanted pet dumping ground" for the county. Not a week goes by that we don't come across some sad abandoned animal wandering about half-starved in woods or shivering by the roadside. If a pet owner has legitimate reason that they have to get rid of a pet, I'd far prefer they take that poor creature to a shelter rather than just dump them.

This is heart breaking beyond belief. I have no family. I went to them in a time of need and because a 18 year problem wasn’t fixed over night, they spread malicious rumours about me to national press and through social media. This resulted in my so called friends dropping me too.... so the only living things on this earth who treated me, like the nice, kind, decent person I am, where my beloved animals. Due to the above, I doubt I’ll have children. My pets are my everything. Therefore, coming 2nd place on the list of things I hate, after my family, are animal abusers

Pets are for life. Don't get one if you can't commit. That said! I strongly oppose shaming people for dropping (dragging?) pets off at the shelter. If we shame people for doing the right thing, next time they might throw them out of the car, leave them on the side of the road, take them to the woods, throw them in the river, etc. Shelters are not ideal, but they are far better than leaving pets to the elements.

I just have to say how strange it is that people people (RIGHTFULLY) have such compassion and concern for animals we deem companions. But no one cares or wants to hear of the brutal, short lives of animals we deem livestock and how they are horribly murdered. Why don’t they matter too? I find the clear split off of compassion and empathy for “classes” of animals in our society to be psychopathic and I believe it’s where our violence to each other is rooted. We so easily cut off compassion and love for those we deem “other”. Vegetarian ya’all...try it !!

I partially agree with you, but being vegetarian doesn’t help as much as it seems. What we need to work on is making the places and situations that livestock live in better. I am personally vegetarian myself, but I know that not eating meat isnt really saving any lives.

Or take them to a no-kill shelter, or don't get a dog in the first place if you are going to end up doing this to them. If they truly cared about the animal's well-being they would ensure they went to somewhere they would be taken care of and not killed.
