Meet Zorro The Fox Who Visits Me Every Day For The Last 3 Winters

I am a nature photographer from beautiful Prince Edward Island, Canada. For the last 3 years I’ve had a couple of different foxes visit me, but just one has been there the entire time, and that is my good buddy Zorro the Fox.

I’ve captured many sides of him since I met him, and I thought I would share some of my favorites.

More info: Facebook

Zorro has made my backyard his home for the last 3 winters, visiting me daily

He shows up during the day and nap for hours, sometimes on the ground, sometimes inside the playpen!

He is a very handsome fox, and I’m thankful he trusts me enough to get close to capture his good side

He visits me year round, but he shows up the most during the winter, usually curled up and trying to forget about the snow surrounding him

He reminds me of a cat more than a dog. He likes to walk along the fence surrounding my yard to get from one garden shed to the other

Every now and again he will get up and act like a goofball, showing a fun and playful side to his personality. I was catching snowflakes on my tongue with him this day

And sometimes he likes to bring over friends, which I don’t mind at all. As long as they tidy up after themselves

But for the most part, he just likes to lounge around and catch some Z’s.

His favorite thing in the world is to stretch out in the sun

What a handsome fella!

Yawn!

Wild animals know where they will be safe. This is what I miss most about living in the country, deer coming right up to my back porch, etc

This is exactly how the next member of the 'genus canis' becomes domesticated. Pick out the friendliest one, who is not afraid of you, and breed it with another friendly member. Repeat several times by picking the friendliest of the broods, and soon you will have a domesticated fox. They are doing that in Siberia as we speak, and it works. https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/guest-blog/mans-new-best-friend-a-forgotten-russian-experiment-in-fox-domestication/ .

When I was in PEI, foxes were sitting by the road, waiting for people driving by to throw them some snacks.

Oh, he's a beauty. Look at that brush! You obviously are a gentle soul, Jon. Foxes only come to the best people. My husband loves them and we're always happy to see new pics of them. Looks like the ONLY "foxy" trick you didn't show us is what I call the snowy mouse-pounce, but obviously Zorro is obviously well-fed. Thank you from Tad and me 💓

Thank you! The majority of foxes that I see are urban, they live in the city with me. There is lots of food around everywhere, so I've never really seen them hunt like that in person. Someday hopefully!

Zorro is such a handsome fox; that he visits you yearly has to mean that he has trust in you. Given how beautiful his coat is, I hope that there is no demented trophy hunter in your area, someone who would think nothing of slaughtering Zorro or his companions for the tails. I hope he continues to visit you for a long long time; maybe he will bring his off-spring to visit.

Thank you Lee! The foxes that visit me are urban foxes, they live in the city, so hopefully the chances of them being hunted is small. We don't really have a problem with foxes here on P.E.I. anyways. P.E.I. and foxes have a long history together, so we tend to enjoy them around.

Just beautiful. I always say that foxes are the perfect combination of cats and dogs. And just as smart and playful. We have one that comes around in our yard, too. He likes to play peek-a-boo. I agree with Nancy - you are one lucky guy!

Absolutely beautiful...the very best qualities of both cats and dogs in one gorgeous creature! I am an illustrator and I hope one day to do a children's book with a fox as the main character. Thank you for your amazing photography, and capturing the complex personality of these special animals.

That reminds me of a story I read or saw on tv or online. Some guy in Russia bred people-friendly foxes with other friendly foxes, and the result was something more like a dog. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of that is that it took only a few generations for the effect to show itself.

A few years ago, a fox must have had her kits near my house. When they got to be "teenagers" as we called them (still young, but out on their own), we would see them tumbling down the side of the road, playing tag and rolling all over each other. We live in the country, and our neighbors on the road came to know these guys too, and we all drove extra carefully to keep them safe. If we saw them, we'd stop the car and let them go ahead of us, keeping a watch out to make sure any other cars coming saw them, also. They grew up and moved on, I guess, because we only saw them for a month or so, but my husband and I still remember them. "Remember the foxes?" we'll say, and all the memories come tumbling out again.

Alright - I've got to know where on the Island you are. My inlaws have several "pet" fox over the years in Park Corner - but that is Summer only. We always wonder what happens to them in winter.

No Lou, they are urban foxes so because they may come in contact with other humans around here I do not feed any wildlife. It's not safe for them.

Where in P.E.I roughly do you live? I only ask because I visited my family in Central Bedeque this past Christmas and while I was there, we took a casual drive around and we came across a gorgeous friendly fox with a thick coat and it had a white sock on its back left paw. I took some lovely photos of it that I was actually considering posting on this site, maybe it was a friend of yours?

Hi Amanda, I live in Charlottetown. P.E.I. is full of wild foxes, so it was probably a different fox. But they are all wonderful!

I had a silver fox that would come into my yard in the winter and actually had her babies in a ditch culvert every spring, she did this for about 8 or nine years. I think some of her great grand children come and visit me. I love seeing them.
