Given the wife’s actions, it’s not far-fetched to think that she might have an addiction. Experts say this type of addiction plagues roughly 6-8% of the American adult population.
It’s categorized by compulsive behaviors or thoughts that the person cannot seem to control. And just like other addictions, the obsessive, incessant thoughts can interfere with other areas of life, regardless of what’s at stake. They spend a lot of time fantasizing about encounters.
The person may engage in physical acts with others, and even pay (or be paid) to get their needs met.
“[It’s] not yet been given an official diagnosis …due to competing beliefs around what to call the disorder, how to describe its criteria, and a need for additional empirical research to support its prevalence in society,” says Michael Damioli, Clinical Director of Colorado Medication Assisted Recovery. “It has to do with the way someone relates to these things, why they engage in them, and how it then impacts their lives.”
According to Addictioncenter.com, if left untreated, this type of addiction can lead to other problems like turning to alcohol or substances, relationship and communication issues, and an overall lower quality of life.
If you think your partner has an addiction of this nature, there are some signs you can look out for. These include constant talk about intimacy, fantasies, or acts. They may always be insisting on “dirty talk” even in the most mundane moments. Other signs include them sneaking around, being secretive or acting differently. They could be acting closed off, and angry when they’re usually open, even-tempered and friendly.
“Addiction can cause a person to do things and act in ways that are completely against who they are and what they stand for; it changes someone from the inside out,” explains the center’s site.
Experts warn that regardless of the terms and conditions of your relationship, if your partner has an addiction, they could be jeopardizing more than just your partnership. They might be putting both partners’ health at risk.
