Why You Should Adopt, Not Shop: The Story Of My Rescue Dog Lola

From the time my dog fell ill to the day she died, just 13 short days went by. I didn’t have time to prepare myself for her absence, and I didn’t have time to prepare to say goodbye.

That’s why I decided to create these illustrations. It was my way of spending a little more time with her. My way of taking the time to express my gratitude for all the happiness and the joy she brought into my life. For being by my side all those years. My way of saying goodbye.

Through our story, I want to encourage people who are thinking of having a pet to think of all the Lolas out there, all those little souls, all alone behind bars, who are cold, stressed out, and afraid, just waiting for one thing: for someone who will give them the opportunity to learn it all, and to teach it all in return: unconditional love, gratitude, and resilience. Please don’t shop, adopt.

There are so many animals in shelters that need a home already. Please, don't pay a breeder to bring more into this world when there's a critter that would love to go home with you and be your companion. Edited to tell the author that they made an old fart cry this morning.

This is beautiful. Adopt! Not shop! My sister and lived together from 2014 up until this last May, and we adopted 4 cats together in that time. 3 FIV boys and a semi-feral girl. My sister and her boyfriend moved in together and have the cats, but I catsit from time to time.

When I was dumber, I wanted a full blood Golden Retriever. My dream dog since boyhood. So after our 1st was born, when she got about 2, we decided to get a dog. Oh boy, here's my chance. Decided to go the adopted route. Good God you would think we were trying to adopt a child. EVERY SINGLE ONE was just ignorant. We called probably 10 different places that adopted dogs out. They were all $1000 or more bucks. They wanted an extensive interview process and home visits and see if your yard is big enough to accommodate a dog and is properly fenced and then they do monthly visits for 6 months then every 6 months visit then yearly for 2 years. We said EFF that and bought one from a breeder for $500. I loved that baby. She was my sidekick for so long but sadly passed. So now, our last one was a pound dog. She's annoying AF but I love her.

I've heard of places like that, with all the hoops to jump through and crap...I dont go to those and I don't donate to those. I understand wanting to be sure the critter is going to a good place, but damn.
