They will be wary of new surroundings.

When you bring them home make sure they have a room to themselves for at least the first few hours so they can settle in, moving to a new home is scary, especially when there’s already people living there. (Even more so if you have other pets.)

    Take it slow

Don’t be in a rush to introduce your kitty to the rest of the family, if you have any other animals make sure to introduce them gently.
All animals are territorial, and your new kitten is no different, even if your Labrador was here first.

When you do finally introduce them make sure that someone is holding one of them, and don’t leave them alone for a while.

Make sure food and water is available

Your cat is going to be exhausted from of the excitement, so make sure to keep fresh water and food available at all times.

If you do own other cat’s keep there food separate.

This may seem like an obvious one but most new cat owners try to jump straight into a feeding schedule. This takes a while for the cat to adjust to.

    Accidents Happen

It’s your cat’s first day and even if they are litter trained it may take them a while to adjust to your rules and the location of the litter tray.
Try not to be too threatening when telling your kitten off as it will start to fear you.

Your best option is to pick it up when it makes a mistake, show it what it has done wrong, tap it on the nose and put it in the litter tray.
That’s what I’ve always been told and it works a charm.

(Make sure the tap is gentle as cat’s are very sensitive.)

    Don’t force it

It’s been a stressful and exciting day for the little kitty, and I’m sure you are desperate to get a cuddle from your new baby. But don’t expect too much. You may be better off laying/sitting close by and stroking it until you are more familiar.

If you try to force affection it may cause the cat to avoid you.

The cat will come to you when it is ready.
