The ‘What I Wanted Vs. What I Got’ Trend Has People Sharing Funny Stories Of Frustration
Expectations are a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it’s fun to imagine all the wonderful scenarios that might play out in real life. On the other hand, if your expectations are a tad on the unrealistic side, they can completely wreck your emotional state when you step down from your daydreams and come face to face with reality.
But what about fairly realistic expectations? Surely, if somebody advertises a product or a service, the customer can expect to get exactly what they pay for… right? Spoiler alert: oh, dear Lord, no! TikTok users have been uploading videos showing the huge differences between what they (un)realistically wanted and what they got. From clothes to dog haircuts and more.
People have been adding TikTok user Keelyknight aka Madeline’s audio (where she’s crying because of the nails she got) to their own videos, and we’ve collected some of the best ones for you to watch, dear Pandas. Have a look, upvote your fave vids, and be sure to let us know which ones were your favorite, why, and if you’ve ever been in a similar situation yourselves.

Load More Replies...MORAL: Don’t take a photo of an obvious styling by a $700 high-end Hollywood boutique to your local $15 hair cutter and expect anything other than a disaster. The difference in the level of talent, experience and professional equipment needed to pull it off is like day and night. And this applies to a lot of these entries.
This is a disaster, yes. However, I don't think this template would have worked as well with this person due to the shape of her neck and head. The models' neck is very narrow and shapes prettily upwards to the head. The other one has thicker neck and the head is longer in shape.
Or when someone sees the pic on the left and goes down to the cousin they have who has just started beauty school that week to do it.

When will people learn to not buy clothes on Wish? Lol. If the price seems too good to be true.....
I would include "Airydress.com" as another ripoff site. Don't go near it.
Load More Replies...When will people stop using those crap sites to buy stuff? Even if it looks like the pic sometimes, it is still going to be short-lived landfill-filling crap.
Load More Replies...What did you expect? These never work! And I mean for anybody!
Exactly, what would you expect, none of them look like an actual real mask
Load More Replies...Okay, but who thought this was a good idea in the first place?
When it comes to getting something we totally didn’t want, there are two aspects that you have to consider. The actual quality of the service and managing your own expectations so that you don’t end up being constantly disappointed.
The first aspect is fairly straightforward, even though it might not be easy to get around. If the product or service you’ve received doesn’t meet your standards of quality or what’s been advertised, then you’ve got to ask for a refund. Complain! Often and loudly.
Remember the episode of Friends when Ross tried to get a tan? That's how LOL
Load More Replies...They say not to shower afterwards. Well this time I think you shouldn’t follow that advice and shower, swim, jump into your neighborhood pond.
Well, no, it's the contrary, she was supposed to do it mississippilessly. ( Yes I reply to myself on a stupid joke)
Load More Replies...Oh no... it will look better once you bush it out but that ombré is atrocious
That’s not ombré. Ombre is gradual. This is just dipping it in Kool-Aid.
Load More Replies...If Scarlett O'Hara wanted to fit in at an Evanescence concert this would work.
That's criminally bad. I wouldn't pay for that and I'd want them to pay for someone competent to fix it.
It looks as if your hair was bathed in honey, curled, and the ends dipped in neon orange paint
This dog (on the right) looks like someone's homophobic aunt from Macedonia
Pic on right looks like Boris Johnson being asked about the 'wallpaper'
As someone who used to groom dogs, I have to ask. Just how matted was the dog beforehand? This only happens when the dog can't be brushed out.
I agree, although the top of the head and how the ears are cut are really inexcusable. Realistically they should have cut those proportional to the body. A 0 guard topknot and down the ears would have done wonders to bring this groom together!
Load More Replies...Obviously, try to be as diplomatic as you can with your complaints—you’re dealing with other human beings after all. And it’s not always the person who’s registering your complaint who was responsible for what you got. So try not to make their life hell and they’ll be more likely to help you out.
This is stupid. I always had a mirror in front of me and the piercer made a mark with a pen before he pierced my ear, asking me if it was the position I wanted. This could never have happened.
Plus there is no way she wouldn't realize it the first time. Two times? Not buying it.
Load More Replies...As a piercing nut - what piercer worth their salt would mix up an outer helix and a forward helix piercing (it looks like a forward helix from here)? Or wouldn't ask you to double check the positions? This is wrong, this stuff is meant to be double, triple checked for a reason. I'm going to go for "person who shouldn't be near a piercing needle" for the "piercer" involved.
A friend did this, for sure. There's no way a professional did this.
Load More Replies...I’m not sure if I believe this— this just looks like an annoying TikTokker trying to get attention. There is absolutely no way a professional piercer did this. It looks like it was done by a friend who had no idea of basic human anatomy or how to even pierce an ear for that matter.
It has been implied that the comments on the tiktok state that this was not professionally done. I can't check them myself, but I doubt that this is professional.
Load More Replies...But...when you get a piercing done you approve where they dot you with a pen before they pierce you. That is if you go to a legitimate piercer.
There's no way a professional piercer would mix the two different types of piercings up, they'd have also checked before using the needle (or gun if that's the way they worked). When I had my helix done, it was marked in pen first and I had to verify I was happy with the location.
Any piercer that uses a piercing gun is not a professional piercer

If a company has a genuine customer-first policy in play, they’ll take serious complaints, well, seriously. They’ll hear you out, offer you support, follow up on your complaint, and do whatever they can to make up for their mistake. But we all know that far from every company is willing to be so friendly and instead has a “profit comes first, collateral damage is all right” kind of mentality.
That happened to my Westie once and I have never seen a more upset pooch. Bless him we couldn't help laughing and he sulked for a weeks
A few times when my dog had gone too long without a grooming they have to shave him. It looks horrible and he doesn’t look like my baby but it does always grow back. He actually looks like Mandy Patinkin.
I had my Golden shaved because the poor thing did not lose hair and was miserable, went to pick him up and they had left the hair on the tail. Nope, try again LOL
Load More Replies...As a dog groomer, this dog was most likely matted and the groomer had no choice but to shave it down. They should have set the customer's expectations straight from the start though.
Yes. This has happened to my dog especially during lock down when he went 4 months without a grooming. It’s upsetting but I was prepared. Luckily he’s a floof again and is back to getting groomed once every 6 weeks.
Load More Replies...Again, how matted was this dog beforehand? But please blame the groomer for not performing miracles, or subjecting the dog to cruel treatment.
Not if they cut it open and it's pink inside lol.

I would hope that picture after picture of the horrible things sellers p**n off on people that soon people would stop buying cloths from "FlyByNight Inc." It makes me sad to wonder how many people are sending good money to these makers and are getting ripped off. I wonder how many girls have had their prom messed up because they bought their dresses from one of these crap companies?
I’m trying to figure out what word got censored... passin’?? P**n? What “foul language” word is that?!

That dress hasn't even been laundered yet, it still has the creases from shipping. Even though it may never look exactly like the picture, I think it will look really nice on her once she washes it. The color is gorgeous with her skin tone.
I was thinking that. The Teal is way nicer than the emerald and the cowl look might emerge with a wash and an iron...
Load More Replies...Consider seeking legal aid if the product was especially expensive or if you, your loved ones, or your pets suffered because of what happened. The model is size 2 and I’m size 14. I want to look like the model so I’ll get size 2. Wouldn’t it be great if life worked like that?
I used to work at Victoria's Secret. A guy came in to buy his girlfriend a teddy. I asked him if he knew her size. He said, "She's about your size." I'm 5'4" and 110 lbs. The day after Valentine's Day a beautiful girl (5'8" and 140) walked in with the teddy to return it. I busted out laughing and said, "I helped your boyfriend with this. He said you were about my size." She just shook her head and said, "At least he tried."
Yeah that was not very clever to begin with.... i also want to look like the model but i don't have the size of the model🙄🙄🙄
Did the "hairdresser" burn her hair off? What is happening at the hairline? It looks like a child attacked her with an electric trimmer while she slept.
Ok-former hairdresser here-she did an all over bleach without a toner. She should've foiled it and bleach to light yellow, close to almost white, then add a toner. I'd go back or somewhere else and have them do brown lowlights, foiling some to protect from brown, and add purple toner to get rid of brass. God poor woman
Hmm, yeah this is weird. Does she have extensions or a wig? What's up with that weird bald area? Why not show the whole head? The pic is oddly blocked. The color is terrible and not even close, so, I choose to believe that she didn't go to an actual salon, but had a non-professional do it
My hairdresser did the same thing because she said with my hair they can't do a natural ombre... So they did my whole head with yellow dye instead of the silver bronze-ish one I chose. I was livid. They wonder why I never came back...
Load More Replies...Hmm, something seems fishy here. A professional hairdresser who surely know not to bleach your entire freaking head. Also, what in the world is up with the bald patch —- if you zoom in it looks like she is wearing a wig. Hmmm 🧐
What she really meant was "I went to Walmart and did it myself."
Why are people so surprised with tissue masks? You are NOT going to look like the picture on the front, and why would you? It moulds to the contours of your face. If this woman thinks she will look like a gorgeous Ariel, she needs a reality check. These are masks to treat skin, taken off afterwards, not masks for Halloween or costume changes.
I didn't realize Ariel had the muttonchops of a 1850's Nantucket fisherman
lol that's the funniest thing I've heard all day I like your sense of humour!
Load More Replies...What is with all these stick on paper thin masks? They are hideous!
They know that these mask are press on right??? So there's no way you're actually going to look like the Disney characters. This should be common sense
However, there’s that pesky second aspect when it comes to not getting what we wanted. And that all comes down to our expectations. Sometimes, what we want is so perfect, requires so much skill and craftsmanship, that not everyone can fulfill our orders. In those cases, what we envision and what the local craftspeople can provide simply don’t sync up. Or, to put it more bluntly, you get what you pay for.
I can’t even fathom the thought process in thinking these were remotely similar. How to people get away with this?
I'm sorry but i absolutely can not make sense of the right picture. What even is going on here?
I have the green dragon they ordered. Makes me glad I got it from a store...
she did herself or went to a cheap, cheap salon.
Load More Replies...Seriously. I think some of these are for attention. After one nail, I’d be like hell no!
Load More Replies...i call bs... there is no way she went somewhere and got that done and paid for it!
I dont understand this. You could look at your nails while they are working at them. So after the first one, you can stop them?
Exactly. Or maybe the customer was extremely timid and didn’t want to upset the nail tech?? I only say that because I was like that as a teenager. I allowed people to get away with obviously f*****g up my hair because I didn’t want to hurt their feelings....
Load More Replies...I think this. You surely would have stopped the nail tech if the are freehanding tips so very badly
Load More Replies...A style that can only be done with acrylic tips, how was it not noticed that no tips were being applied?
Tbf gradients can absolutely be done without tips/on short nails
Load More Replies...Those pants are perfect for smuggling outside candy into movie theaters!
Those look super comfortable! And even if there're wrong she looks great
Don’t expect your nails to look like a model’s when you’re getting them done at a discount store at your local mall. Similarly, you can’t expect a newbie dog groomer to get the same results as a grandmaster with decades of experience: they’ll do their best but you simply can’t expect them to perform according to your imaginary expectations.
You actually wanted the piece of s**t in the first pic? I think you got a better deal 🤷
These pictures must be mixed up. There's no way someone would expect the picture on the left and be unhappy with the one on the right.
It's a "Forg". Says so right on the cake.
Load More Replies...Haha, I love how they added the shadow from the picture to the color of the nails :D
The nail tech painted black lines on the bottom...those are shadows!!!! 😭😭😂😂 I’m f***ing dead!! ☠️ I don’t know why, but that sent me
The set on the right is nail polish, either conventional or gel. The set on the left is done with colored acrylic. No comparison.
And the black line is done because there is a shadow in the original pic, well....
Why do people want nails that long? Doesn’t it make everything way harder?
when my mom has long nails she always complains about how hard it is to type
Load More Replies...LOL There is almost enough extra fabric to build another pair of pants!
Somewhere out there is an extremely tall woman saying "damnit, not again".
The girl could be really short though. You can see her standing next to a cupboard with handles (which tend to be at roughly belly height for an average-height person).
lol Being five foot one, this happens to me so much that I wont buy pants online. Sometimes I can get the capris to be the right length though.
In life, it’s best to do your very best to get the result that you want and then relinquish any and all expectations. You did your best. Well done! Now sit back and don’t fret, find something else to do. If you get what you want, fantastic. If not, no big deal—you’ll try again later. Maybe with a different tactic in mind.
Having low expectations is a healthy mindset, similar to the one where you’re encouraged to do good things for people without expecting anything in return. Life has a pleasant way of surprising us when we’re not desperate, needy, and whiny.
I think it might actually be a different dog. Could be the lighting, but there seems to be a blue eye on the right picture, and the nose isn't black.
Load More Replies...Maybe it's a "what I asked for, what I got" image set.
Load More Replies...Is the left supposed to be a picture of what they wanted? They’re clearly not the same dog.
I hate when groomers get a dog and they just shave it, like no gimme my fluff back
You know they do that because the owners neglect to brush at home and they are so matted they have to be shaved
Load More Replies...Well at least she can use it for picnic cause as a dress is horrible
Load More Replies...She obviously was moving them when they took the picture
Load More Replies...Yeah, wrong dress. You should have been able to tell it was wrong before even taking out of the package. Solution: send. It. Back. It's actually cute, but way too short obviously. Maybe wear it with jeans? (Personally, I think it looks better than the dress she chose would on her)
This is why you should always check, double check and even triple check the actual sizes.
Omg you should see how long it takes for me to order something online! I check and double check and take notes and check reviews and more sites.... i need to be really sure cause i also hate the procedure of changing something online!
Load More Replies...My advice: Always read the reviews. Start with the worst ones because you can tell if the comments are genuine or just sour grapes
This happened with my first purchase off Wish. After that I always double check the description.
I eventually learned not to order something from Wish unless there are actual customer photos in the reviews--and most especially, not to order when there are only store reviews and no customer reviews for the specific item.
Load More Replies...PsychCentral explains that the first step in relinquishing unrealistic expectations is being able to spot them. Of course, that’s easier said than done because we may have had certain expectations for years and years. And a lot of it’s connected to our desire to maintain control over everything.
Some examples of completely unrealistic expectations include the beliefs that everyone should like you and that the world should be fair. We simply can’t have that kind of control over the world (well, unless we’re a superhero, the Emperor of the Universe, or a member of the Greek Pantheon).
All you would have to do to get that sort of hair is go to sleep and wake up
@Mewton's Third Paw: My bed head is amazing, it's smooth and with great curls. The problem is it can become an instant tangle with just 1 gust of wind. So I brush out those lovely locks and put them up. I plan for bedhead for special occasions such as parties and Christmas and people always compliment me on it (at least until the curls break down and turn into a tangled mess I'll need an hour and a brush to work through). Everybody's bodies are different and that includes hair. You may not know anyone with great bedhead, but we are out there.
Load More Replies...Okay, i've never even curled my hair before, but i honestly still think I could do better than that. no offense to the hair dresser!
I have no problem offending that hairdresser, lol, it's bad
Load More Replies...It does not seem so bad, maybe the girl has low quality hair. I have the same problem, no matter what I do with my hair it always looks similar to the right photo.
Completely agree. It's not bad styling. The girl has much thinner hair than the model. She needs extensions to get similar results.
Load More Replies...Poor girl, she turned your 'Beachy Waves' into a 'post-Hurricane' hairdo.
What's so odd to me is they went thru the trouble of getting a true red frosting (not easy) and even gave it that muppet hair look? Why not bring it home and just put the right face on top?
Load More Replies...My question with these is always: Did you pay for the cake on the left or the cake on the right? You can't expect a designer cake if you don't pay a designer price.
The requested cake is a fairly easy design. I wouldn’t call it designer.
Load More Replies...Remember when smash cakes were just a small, one serving size, plain white or chocolate cake?
Sure, but smash cakes today are usually decorated to be cute now so that parents can look back and remember better.
Load More Replies...You are getting a cake to smash and not to eat? Also if you smash it anyways just turn it around, no one cares what it looks like.
Smash cakes are usually for 1, 2, or 3 year old because they do not have proper eating capabilities yet, so they get to smash. It's fun. They will eat it too though.
Load More Replies...good. b/c it's stupid. as stupid as gender reveals. as stupid as purposely ruining your wedding dress. why is everyone so stupid now? I had better go yell at some kids to get off my lawn now.
At least there's still enough length to get it fixed. Must be awfully frustrating though.
Her hair looks too thick for that style anyways. Maybe the hairdresser has one leg shorter than the other? :P
I want to believe that the haircut is not finished cause i refuse to believe that a professional would make this result!!
Believe it, it’s happened to me. Lemon Tree (like a super cuts) will hire anyone
Load More Replies...Why cant hairdressers be honest and say - Your hair cannot do what this dummy shows..... her hair is obviously too thick.
I seriously walked out of a salon for screwing up my hair so badly. They threatened to call the cops because I refused to pay. I was like, "Go ahead. I'll wait here. No? Okay bye!" Unfortunately, this was long before social media was the norm & I had no way to give a review or warn others.
Similarly, if we’re constantly disappointed by results and not having our expectations met every step of the way, well, maybe it’s time to analyze them in detail. Spend the weekend looking at your belief structures.
Besides the fact it is not what she wanted... Is it only me or the hair looks burnt?
You are right Sandra. The bleach is over developed and uneven. Poor girl :(
Load More Replies...I biggest problem with a majority of these posts are people trying to get what's on the left for a lesser price. For example, the model on the left would have had an amazing colorist. A colorist with at that level would run you quite a bit of money. You're paying for the experience as much as the product. When it comes to more complicated hair, you pay for what you get. Same with Wish.
Well, for sure, that's not what she wanted....But when colouring the result depends on the original hair colour and in any case you can't compare different haircuts and hairstyles (straight hair to curly). Like, she showed the photo for the colour and didn't want to get her hair cut, but wanted the same result 🤷🤷???
It’s a bad dye job, but the models hair is also wavy. The OP probably left the salon with wavy hair, so she wouldn’t have noticed the bad dye as much. If the salon dyed AND straightened her hair, I hope she got her money back
I guess neither were artificial ones or different sized cakes
Load More Replies...At least the fondant flowers are nicely done. Placements kinda off. All in all it’s quite pretty.
Well to be honest, it is difficult to get the same result if you have a totally different hair type...
Then the hairdresser should have informed the customer.
Load More Replies...The hairdresser f****d up because they should have dyed blonde less hair so it could lightly cover the dark hair. It's not about the type of hair. Trust me, I'm a hair dresser myself. It it was a matter of hair type only, how do you explain the many many posts of hair disasters in previous posts? Bad hairdressers are everywhere! People who blame this woman are low key victim blaming. Come on pandas, we can do a lot better.
I think because it says the "style " she wanted people are thinking about more than just the color.
Load More Replies...everyone is condescendingly talking about hair texture but I'm sure she knows her own hair texture. The color is atrocious and, as some one with her hair texture, I've been to many salons where someone straightened my hair and an hour later it was curly again because hey didn't know what they were doing and told me that they did
everyone is condescendinly talking about hair texture but perhaps this is a problem with color??? I'm sure she knows her own hair texture. The color is atrocious.
Even if she has curled hair, the hairdresser should have at least be able to hit the right color...
Even if they had used a hair straightener, it would have been a terrible job! Such a pity as you have such a gorgeous face and such lovely big eyes!
Give yourself permission to not have everything go perfectly. Embrace flexibility. That doesn’t mean giving up your high standards (quality is good stuff, people), but you have to be relatively down to earth. Otherwise, you’ll spend the rest of your life making wanted vs. got TikTok videos.
Two unmatched wonky piercings are better than perfectly matched paired high nostril pierings?
Load More Replies...ok thats bad but.... wtf that must be the ugliest piercing I have ever seen. And i've had quite a few myself.

I've never understood nose piercings. To me they look like zits or boogers.
Not super terrible, just doesn't look like flames anymore, it's a tad messy. On a side not, I really don't like square tips, it looks even more unnatural
You showed the back and then the front. Turn around! We can't compare.
For any of these pictures that complain about an updo, or the nails not being exactly what they wanted, are they just sitting there with their eyes closed the whole time and not looking until the end?
Probably British. We as a country are incapable of saying anything other than 'looks great, thanks'.
Load More Replies...What does the back of your hair look like? Not all hair can do all dos.
so? what does the back look like, just looks like her hair is slightly shorter than the image she showed them?
They claim that it wasn't. Sady I can't read tiktok comments, but they claim it was done by Coldstone Creamery in the caption. Think they make ice cream cakes?
Load More Replies...The expectation that you will get the first cake from a place that hires almost exclusively local high school kids astounds me.
I agree. The macarons are missing, but the cake still looks kind of pretty.

Load More Replies...Yeah, the first one looks... strange. I do not like the Colors on the second one though.
Load More Replies...Asking for the pic on the left is basically saying "I want my nails to look horrendous" so she got her wish
i like the second one a lot more, but if there was prettier colors
the one on the left reminds me of borat's mankini 😂just needs a mustache
Again, after the first nail you didn’t stop her? This all on you baby girl.
To be fair, it would have been difficult to copy the design exactly because your nails are only 3/4 the length of the ones shown on the left.
So, you're sitting and geting your hair done and you do NOT notice that they are bleaching everything and then colouring the tips as opposed to them bleaching the front part? I find that hard to believe.
This was a case of well I don’t like this picture I’m just going to do what I want
Let this be a testament to all: You get what you pay for. I'm a cheap-ass on most things but I work in a design-centric industry... If you want wedding invites, cake, beauty services, business cards, flowers, costuming, basically ANYTHING that is arts-adjacent, SPEND THE MONEY if you have high standards, people. THIS. You can't buy a $30 cake and expect it to look like the $200 designer cake you saw on instagram. You can't pay your hairdresser $50 and expect the $200 celebrity colour job.
Load More Replies...That is why there is the saying “You get what you pay for”. If you want it cheap, it’s going to look cheap. Why do people keep ordering clothes from Wish? 😂
Why did they eve'the bother trying? Most of it was to be expected... especially the face masks.
I never cease to be amazed by how people are surprised about shitty results when they find the cheapest dodgiest way of doing things hahaha
I always pay attention to the person I'm speaking to with any requests to see if they look like they understand or if they're looking mildly panicked. It's important to understand the limitations your stylist/baker/nail technician etc has, especially when it's involving crafts that rely on skill. Not everyone is an expert on every possible option within their trade (although it would help if people admitted that to their clients before they commit some of these atrocities)
The masks are just fools being separated from their money. If you don’t have the underlying structure, a flat mask is not going to look like a CARTOON character’s face when you drape it on your face!
This happens (at least the tattoo, piercing, hair and nail stuff) if every Tom, D**k and Harry can just go and open a shop. If people would get proper education and training in their crafts, this would not happen.
But if you visit someone with proper education and training you must pay 3 times what Thomas, Richard and Harry charge.

I don't get this nail fails. Like after 1 nail it is visible what the quality is. Stop doing the other 9 nails and get the hell out of there

Load More Replies...A lot of companies - especially oversees companies that make it hard to get a refund - will use a beautiful photo of a professionally made dress then send what's essentially a sack. Fast fashion is a ripoff in so many ways.
If someone shows you a picture of the hair style you want or the nails or cake, etc, and you don't think you are capable of delivering that, then speak up. It's a waste of time and money.
I don't get this nail fails. Like after 1 nail it is visible what the quality is. Stop doing the other 9 nails and get the hell out of there
