Expectations are a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it’s fun to imagine all the wonderful scenarios that might play out in real life. On the other hand, if your expectations are a tad on the unrealistic side, they can completely wreck your emotional state when you step down from your daydreams and come face to face with reality.
But what about fairly realistic expectations? Surely, if somebody advertises a product or a service, the customer can expect to get exactly what they pay for… right? Spoiler alert: oh, dear Lord, no! TikTok users have been uploading videos showing the huge differences between what they (un)realistically wanted and what they got. From clothes to dog haircuts and more.

MORAL: Don’t take a photo of an obvious styling by a $700 high-end Hollywood boutique to your local $15 hair cutter and expect anything other than a disaster. The difference in the level of talent, experience and professional equipment needed to pull it off is like day and night. And this applies to a lot of these entries.

This is a disaster, yes. However, I don't think this template would have worked as well with this person due to the shape of her neck and head. The models' neck is very narrow and shapes prettily upwards to the head. The other one has thicker neck and the head is longer in shape.

When it comes to getting something we totally didn’t want, there are two aspects that you have to consider. The actual quality of the service and managing your own expectations so that you don’t end up being constantly disappointed.
The first aspect is fairly straightforward, even though it might not be easy to get around. If the product or service you’ve received doesn’t meet your standards of quality or what’s been advertised, then you’ve got to ask for a refund. Complain! Often and loudly.

I agree, although the top of the head and how the ears are cut are really inexcusable. Realistically they should have cut those proportional to the body. A 0 guard topknot and down the ears would have done wonders to bring this groom together!

This is stupid. I always had a mirror in front of me and the piercer made a mark with a pen before he pierced my ear, asking me if it was the position I wanted. This could never have happened.

As a piercing nut - what piercer worth their salt would mix up an outer helix and a forward helix piercing (it looks like a forward helix from here)? Or wouldn't ask you to double check the positions? This is wrong, this stuff is meant to be double, triple checked for a reason. I'm going to go for "person who shouldn't be near a piercing needle" for the "piercer" involved.

There's no way a professional piercer would mix the two different types of piercings up, they'd have also checked before using the needle (or gun if that's the way they worked). When I had my helix done, it was marked in pen first and I had to verify I was happy with the location.

If a company has a genuine customer-first policy in play, they’ll take serious complaints, well, seriously. They’ll hear you out, offer you support, follow up on your complaint, and do whatever they can to make up for their mistake. But we all know that far from every company is willing to be so friendly and instead has a “profit comes first, collateral damage is all right” kind of mentality.

A few times when my dog had gone too long without a grooming they have to shave him. It looks horrible and he doesn’t look like my baby but it does always grow back. He actually looks like Mandy Patinkin.

Yes. This has happened to my dog especially during lock down when he went 4 months without a grooming. It’s upsetting but I was prepared. Luckily he’s a floof again and is back to getting groomed once every 6 weeks.

I used to work at Victoria's Secret. A guy came in to buy his girlfriend a teddy. I asked him if he knew her size. He said, "She's about your size." I'm 5'4" and 110 lbs. The day after Valentine's Day a beautiful girl (5'8" and 140) walked in with the teddy to return it. I busted out laughing and said, "I helped your boyfriend with this. Ok-former hairdresser here-she did an all over bleach without a toner. She should've foiled it and bleach to light yellow, close to almost white, then add a toner. I'd go back or somewhere else and have them do brown lowlights, foiling some to protect from brown, and add purple toner to get rid of brass. God poor woman

Why are people so surprised with tissue masks? You are NOT going to look like the picture on the front, and why would you? It moulds to the contours of your face. If this woman thinks she will look like a gorgeous Ariel, she needs a reality check. These are masks to treat skin, taken off afterwards, not masks for Halloween or costume changes.

However, there’s that pesky second aspect when it comes to not getting what we wanted. And that all comes down to our expectations. Sometimes, what we want is so perfect, requires so much skill and craftsmanship, that not everyone can fulfill our orders. In those cases, what we envision and what the local craftspeople can provide simply don’t sync up. Or, to put it more bluntly, you get what you pay for.

Don’t expect your nails to look like a model’s when you’re getting them done at a discount store at your local mall. Similarly, you can’t expect a newbie dog groomer to get the same results as a grandmaster with decades of experience: they’ll do their best but you simply can’t expect them to perform according to your imaginary expectations.

In life, it’s best to do your very best to get the result that you want and then relinquish any and all expectations. You did your best. Well done! Now sit back and don’t fret, find something else to do. If you get what you want, fantastic. If not, no big deal—you’ll try again later. Maybe with a different tactic in mind.
Having low expectations is a healthy mindset, similar to the one where you’re encouraged to do good things for people without expecting anything in return. Life has a pleasant way of surprising us when we’re not desperate, needy, and whiny.

Some examples of completely unrealistic expectations include the beliefs that everyone should like you and that the world should be fair. We simply can’t have that kind of control over the world (well, unless we’re a superhero, the Emperor of the Universe, or a member of the Greek Pantheon).

@Mewton's Third Paw: My bed head is amazing, it's smooth and with great curls. The problem is it can become an instant tangle with just 1 gust of wind. So I brush out those lovely locks and put them up. I plan for bedhead for special occasions such as parties and Christmas and people always compliment me on it (at least until the curls break down and turn into a tangled mess I'll need an hour and a brush to work through). Everybody's bodies are different and that includes hair. You may not know anyone with great bedhead, but we are out there.

I seriously walked out of a salon for screwing up my hair so badly. They threatened to call the cops because I refused to pay. I was like, "Go ahead. I'll wait here. No? Okay bye!" Unfortunately, this was long before social media was the norm & I had no way to give a review or warn others.
Similarly, if we’re constantly disappointed by results and not having our expectations met every step of the way, well, maybe it’s time to analyze them in detail. Spend the weekend looking at your belief structures.

I biggest problem with a majority of these posts are people trying to get what's on the left for a lesser price. For example, the model on the left would have had an amazing colorist. A colorist with at that level would run you quite a bit of money. You're paying for the experience as much as the product. When it comes to more complicated hair, you pay for what you get. Same with Wish.

Well, for sure, that's not what she wanted....But when colouring the result depends on the original hair colour and in any case you can't compare different haircuts and hairstyles (straight hair to curly). Like, she showed the photo for the colour and didn't want to get her hair cut, but wanted the same result 🤷🤷???

It’s a bad dye job, but the models hair is also wavy. The OP probably left the salon with wavy hair, so she wouldn’t have noticed the bad dye as much. If the salon dyed AND straightened her hair, I hope she got her money back

The hairdresser f****d up because they should have dyed blonde less hair so it could lightly cover the dark hair. It's not about the type of hair. Trust me, I'm a hair dresser myself. It it was a matter of hair type only, how do you explain the many many posts of hair disasters in previous posts? Bad hairdressers are everywhere! People who blame this woman are low key victim blaming. Come on pandas, we can do a lot better.

everyone is condescendingly talking about hair texture but I'm sure she knows her own hair texture. The color is atrocious and, as some one with her hair texture, I've been to many salons where someone straightened my hair and an hour later it was curly again because hey didn't know what they were doing and told me that they did

Even if they had used a hair straightener, it would have been a terrible job! Such a pity as you have such a gorgeous face and such lovely big eyes!
Give yourself permission to not have everything go perfectly. Embrace flexibility. That doesn’t mean giving up your high standards (quality is good stuff, people), but you have to be relatively down to earth. Otherwise, you’ll spend the rest of your life making wanted vs. got TikTok videos.

Not super terrible, just doesn't look like flames anymore, it's a tad messy. On a side not, I really don't like square tips, it looks even more unnatural

You would have gotten a much better, more natural, and more flexible look using an eyebrow pencil. That's how all those 'beauty marks' were created back in the 1930s.

My first time ever getting my eyebrows waxed was for my 8th grade graduation event. The girl screwed then up so bad I’ve never gotten my eyebrows waxed again I’ve always plucked them since then.

Let this be a testament to all: You get what you pay for. I'm a cheap-ass on most things but I work in a design-centric industry... If you want wedding invites, cake, beauty services, business cards, flowers, costuming, basically ANYTHING that is arts-adjacent, SPEND THE MONEY if you have high standards, people. Support the folks who have spent their money and energy to perfect their craft. If ya can't afford a pro cake, a messed up monster cake is adorable and very much expresses your love without the price tag.

I always pay attention to the person I'm speaking to with any requests to see if they look like they understand or if they're looking mildly panicked. It's important to understand the limitations your stylist/baker/nail technician etc has, especially when it's involving crafts that rely on skill. Not everyone is an expert on every possible option within their trade (although it would help if people admitted that to their clients before they commit some of these atrocities)

The masks are just fools being separated from their money. If you don’t have the underlying structure, a flat mask is not going to look like a CARTOON character’s face when you drape it on your face!

A lot of companies - especially oversees companies that make it hard to get a refund - will use a beautiful photo of a professionally made dress then send what's essentially a sack. Fast fashion is a ripoff in so many ways.
