Hi there! My name is Mira Petrova and I'm a young illustrator and graphic designer who lives in Sofia, Bulgaria. For many years now, I've been occupied with thoughts and feelings about global warming and the way we, humankind, harm our planet.
I dream of living a zero-waste life, but very often I fail miserably, and it makes me sad and discouraged. The simple truth is—zero waste living can be hard! But I realized the following: the more I become "aware" of what I buy and what alternatives I have, the more conscious I become; my decision-making process changes and with that, the amount of waste I produce. That's how the term "waste awareness" appeared in my life. Zero waste just sounded way too ambitious and overwhelming.

I love that motto. I wish all tourists were like that (and throw their garbage in garbage cans)
I don't think that's a tourist thing. It's a douchebag thing. It really bugs me when people litter and some people encourage others to! For example, I saw some kid put his gum in the bin and then another kid called him a nerd and said he should spit it on the floor. Clearly he didn't realise the littering, gum included, is illegal.
Load More Replies...There's a similar motto in SCUBA diving: Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but bubbles.
I will pickup people's discarded trash right in front of them and throw it away... Making straight eye contact..
These are amazing... I wonder if you would be willing to let me share them as long as I give you credit? See www.sustainabletourism.net for more about me.. or you can tweet me at @SustTourism
So with that new approach to the subject, I started creating this comic strip (with the inspirational help of my super supportive boyfriend). We decided to call it Waste Aware Animals. We wanted to give people a fun and positive way to learn and share about the zero waste philosophy, free of shame and guilt. And spread the message that we can all be part of the change or inspire it in others, sometimes even with the smallest actions.
Unless you get those plastic wrapped bananas from a few days ago..
The worst thing I've seen was cracked eggs being sold in a plastic cup. Why?
Load More Replies...Just a little at a time, and slowly do more, but everyone does not live the same life style !!!
Going Keto has produced the same realization for ME! I hardly have anything for my weekly garbage pick up to warrant even walking the garbage can to the curb!
Is that true? Why would they put an edible sticker on a banana peel, you dont eat the peel...
Load More Replies...Why would they wrap a banana in plastic, there's a peel that protects it.
Load More Replies...Ulg, I wish I could get people to take the stickers off their bananas BEFORE putting them in the office composting I set up. Most people just don't care at all.
The fox characters, Mr and Miss Fox, are, of course, based on two of us. As for why the characters are all animals (even though they live in the big city and face all the everyday life problems that we do), well, who could possibly be a better inspiration for sustainable living than the animals? And also—who could be cuter?
The characters doing dainty work, sewing clothes and gluing an objet d'art are wearing dresses. The ones fixing machinery or using a tool are in "male" clothes. I know I am mixing metaphors here, and that the characters could well be transvestites, which is ok with me, but in future cartoons you might want to mix it up a bit.
Many things can be fixed, too much money, so throw it away !!!
This annoys me. I can sew in a button, glue up a piece of ceramic and in a pinch fix up a dryer. I can't really fix a pair of glasses, and I depend on those to function. Know what battles to fight , sometimes getting new ones is the only realistic solution.
Fixing a pair of glasses is in the realm of reality, or bring it to an optician.
Load More Replies...I sew my clothes from people's old curtains, table cloth etc. Nobody has the same clothes as I.
A good thing would be a way to encourage people to realize that they don't need so many clothes. A hundred years ago, the average adult had 3 or 4 outfits tops, kept them clean and mended, wore them til they wore out, and no one gave a damn as long as one didn't stink and looked tidy. We must learn to stop WANTING so much stuff, period, and I'm including myself in this.
I LOVE thrift store shopping! You never know what you're going to find, but you almost always end up with some really cool and unique stuff!
This is 100% true. If you know how to shop at the goodwill you can find some nice stuff
I don't shop second hand because they only do clothes for babies and adults, but I try to give all my old clothes to the charity shop.
I but some of my boys clothes at thrift stores. They are 10 and 12. I always see clothes for every size and shape. What store do you go to that doesn't?
Load More Replies...Vintage fur is completely ethical. If the animal was dead before you were born, go for it! It’s not supporting the trade in any way.
Load More Replies...Clothes can be carefully cared for, mended or restyled and they can last a long time.
And buy less, and when you do shop, buy better quality items, that last longer.
I love to thrift shop. I recently bought a vintage wool jacket for someone that cost £7! I also buy clothes that I repurpose into something I want to wear, that's unique. I'm so glad that I was taught to sew by my grandmother as I often by fabric at charity shops and make them into clothes too. My white linen shirt was once a tablecloth which had be discarded as it had a scorch mark on one corner... that I was able to hide in my garment!
All the stories in the comics are inspired either by my personal experiences and situations that I have witnessed or overheard. Since we started publishing it, people also write in to share zero waste-related situations, ideas, and successes and I couldn't be happier and more grateful. It makes me feel like we're all part of one big community and together, we can make a difference.
It happened to me once (well not once but this was the time I've figured out something is wrong about the way we pack our groceries). I went to my local grocery store. At the check out I've noticed that I've forgot my reusable bag and the only ones they had was a plastic ones. That was just a cauliflower and some herbs so I've decided to take it by hand. Especially because I lived around the corner. The look on the lady's face when I told her I don't need a bag was absolutely shocked. She looked at me like at crazy person. I'm not kidding. She even asked me if I don't have my bag and like three times she tried to give me a plastic.
Lol my mom and her boyfriend just store the groceries in my baby brother's stroller when they forget their reusable bags (Disposable bags are banned where I live so yeah)
I wish there would be more places like yours.
Load More Replies...I keep my reusable bags in my car so they're always available when I shop.
And produce as much as you can of what you use. Humans take better care of things they have done themselves.
yes make your own sauces, shampoo, cleaning products etc to cut back on buying new in a plastic bottle
Load More Replies...@Mira Petrova: Thank you!! This is the best I've ever seen! Love this. Will share with both grownups and kids, family and friends 🍾❤
Exactly like composting ;) But Rot starts with an "R", so it works better with the others :D
Load More Replies...Yes, but forgetful people like me don't bring them :p
Load More Replies...If you can’t afford the fancy schmancy veggie bags hit the dollar store for laundry washing bags! The big ones are great for corn on the cob. Also save those plastic mesh bags and reuse even the little ones for things like garlic and shallots.
I always use a large purse with compartments. One compartment has folded up cloth bags. I always have them with me, so I can't forget.
Good Idea, Use too small clothes and stitch them into bags for shopping
I know! But sometimes people at the store really don't and it creates very comical situations, so I was trying to represent that. :)
Load More Replies.......just many of those ignorant, irresponsible "smart" people who do not think and devastate the planet.
Grandma always said, "You'll catch more flies with sugar than with vinegar." Greta is right, but her delivery needs work. She's preaching to the choir, while alienating the congregation she hopes to reach.
Not really. For many years there’s been a number of people who used very kind approaches, and clearly that didn’t work (like Al Gore, etc), so Greta is showing the so-called ‘leaders’ of the earth’s countries how the younger generations are going to be like if things don’t get better, firsthand.

Clearly you see what you want to see. Did you pay attention when the story of her support staff came out? I bet you didn't. Yeah, they took a jet over here. And then back again. 0 emissions my a*s.
yes it is normal for the climate to change BUT not that fast and not that extreme!
And even if it were, if this were a natural process... humanity has never lived through an ice age or a warm age, and unless we do something about it we aren't going to live through this one.
Load More Replies...The weather changes, but not the climate. There has been no snow in my town in a famously cold and rainy country and there are fires in Australia. That's not normal.
some people doesn't even know the difference of climate and weather -_-
Load More Replies...Sure, it's not like it's 20 °C in the middle of winter. It's not like summer heat is unbearable.
I live in Florida and this winter the lowest we got was 40F and then daytime back to 85F
Where I live, the health department will not allow food service to fill a travel cup. You can't bring your own container for any food or drink.
i always try to take a little plastic bag with me when i go into the woods or at the beach and collect trash that i find on my way, so i can dispose/recycle it all.
We go fishing at the Tennessee river often and this one spot was getting trashy. Next time we went we filled two trash bags of other people's leftover camping/fishing/partying(?) . Ridiculous.I usually read while my husband fishes but I couldn't read with all that trash around me.
Load More Replies...I always take a grocery bag when I walk my dog to pick up all the trash in the street, then sort the recyclables from the trash, and keep reusing the same bag every time. I'm amazed and disappointed at what people toss out. I've even taken home a dirty hoodie, washed it, and hung it on my mailbox as a Lost & Found. Owner left me a lovely note. Was my reward for all my effort.
All the plastic ever made is still around. Something seriously needs to change.
I love that headband and the alligator really rocks it!
Did you know that garbage in Scandinavian countries is collected and burned? The heat produced is used to heat the houses and warm water in the cities.
This is so informative ❤ Love it!! I thought I understood.. nope, not getting it all. But now!! Thank you - this is USEFUL. IMPORTANT! For us all 🌞🌞😃👍
That’s not easy when industries are not helping us, or do not explain the whole thing.
The city of Seattle takes them for our composting program - also pizza boxes
If you count all the 0.5 litre or smaller bottles, I can believe that.
Load More Replies...Why buy a plastic water bottle? Just put tap water into a reusable water bottle, it's not polluted because they put stuff in it that is safe to drink and removes bacteria.
Sometimes the products they add give a taste to the water ...
Load More Replies...it's because this generation has been fed the lie that you NEED 8 glasses a day... that's a myth.. but they believe it so heaven forbid they should go an hour or two missing water.
Interestingly enough, I've been to A LOT of places that wouldn't give me tap water in my travel cup and I find that really odd.
If I know the water in the country is fine to drink, sometimes I just refill it from the tap in the restrooms. Not to deal with all the drama. :D
Load More Replies...when my fam goes on a long car trip, we buy a bunch of those disposable water bottles to bring with us. I use them, and then keep using them after because they're actually very reliable.
Long before the issue of plastic bottles, I bought a quality thermos bottle, I have used it to this day, a great investment !!!
So a hotel has a picnic and bottled water is delivered on pallets. You don't really expect them to keep thousands of reuseable water bottles, do you? They might transport water in fifty gallon garbage cans and dip it into glasses, but they will not let the guests see them dipping water from garbage cans.
Re-useable plastic bottles are even better than glass bottles because glass bottles have too much weight. The transport therefore causes more CO2.
Load More Replies...I think cheap things are usually cruelty-free. For example, when I got a leather jacket, I got the cheapest one which was fake leather instead of an expensive one with real leather.
What that generally means is that the company isn't properly paying the people making the clothes.
Load More Replies...I try not to buy any such real fur or leather stuff where I can. However, I do sometimes buy something leather from thrift stores. Actually, just generally they're better places to buy clothes and stuff.
This is an extreme. Leather is by product of the meat industry. If the leather is not used, it will just be left rotting. Fur on the other hand, I would not buy it at all
No, it's not extreme, Shin. "Unless there is a comprehensive shift in how the world eats, there is no likelihood of....... meeting the Paris Agreement on climate change." - E. Lancet Commission ..... Animal agriculture is a major contributor to our plant's most significant threats, greater than industrial and car pollution. You have the power to change the world, simply by changing what's on your plate. Adopt the whole plant-based (Vegan) diet, your body, the environment, and suffering animals will thank you for it. By ignoring and down-voting my comment will help none.
Load More Replies...You can buy stainless steel cutlery at the thrift store for just a dollar or two. It doesn't harm the environment because it already exists - you're just re-using it. Get a couple of sets and wrap them in a cloth napkin to take with you. If they accidentally get lost/thrown out it's not a big deal.
Or you can bring some you use at home to save money. There isn't much of a chance that they'll get lost.
Load More Replies...I love my rainbow utensil set that I keep in my purse. Along with silicone & rainbow metal straws.
Bamboo is actually also not very environment friendly as it is just a little percentage of bamboo and a lot of resin and glue which are basically plastic...
Lol same but it's because I'm still in school XD
Load More Replies...I do this with Christmas and birthday gifts. My family thought it was really weird at first and some even scoffed at me, but now my family accepts it, sometimes even welcomes it, and nobody complains about not having to throw all that paper away anymore. I use pretty bandanas or reused fabric pieces that I put away every time and the recipient can keep it if they want it.
We re-use wrapping paper, tags and bows until they aren't usable anymore, then recycle what's recyclable after removing any tape. We use cloth bags, too. I'd like to learn this furoshiki technique, too. It sounds really cool. >^-.-^<
Load More Replies...the recipient gets an additional gift when you do this: a cool cloth for a scarf!
I used to help make reusable cloth gift bags for christmas, and now we use almost no wraping paper!
I just save my paper from year to year. I have paper that goes back to when my kids were little. They are 28 & 24 now. My mom has paper even older. Once we can’t use it anymore we use it as kindling. Christmas cards get recycled and used as gift tags.
That's a great family tradition, Beth. What to do about the recipients who tear the paper to pieces when unwrapping a present? I use the gift bags, take them back and reuse them.
Load More Replies...While I've never tried that we always save wrapping supplies to reuse (such as bags, boxes and tissue paper). I cannot imagine throwing away a gift bag after one use!!
we had the same thing here, and we event could carrying it tied up to the stick... which was good thing for self defence of normal people, and also while crossing river the top stick was over the water
As I've said before, trees are my favorite things ever. I appreciate what they do for us and they are so beautiful! Especially in winter, I call naked trees cemetery trees.
Is that why you're called the squirrel then? My favourite trees are cherry blossoms, by the way.
Load More Replies...Exactly so!!!! "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." - John Muir
I get people hate ads and people don't like bills- I see no reason to have it in paper form, imo. For books, I like actual paper books, if they're for fun to read, but for everything else, just email it. Easier to sort, easier to clean up, and delete when done! No mess. Also that better for the environment thing. When they email us they ALSO send paper! I don't want to see the same thing twice, and deal with it, twice.
I have books that are older than me. They still work just fine! Don't even have to change the batteries ;P But everything else, naaah.
Load More Replies...Actually....switching to paperless bills is not necessarily better for the environment. It might cut back on paper production/waste, but you have to factor in the environmental cost of the use of digital technology instead. Going digital for a lot of things is not a magic bullet--stuff doesn't just magically appear in your inbox; these things require power, which requires fuel, and that's just one of many. Not to mention the socioeconomic factors of expecting everyone to go digital, which is a whole other issue. With things like this, there's too many factors for individual people alone to make a difference, because the environmental costs are all so closely woven together. You reduce one aspect of the cost, but increase another, resulting in a zero sum game. Not that was shouldn't try, but this particular comic is a little misleading.
So we are pretty much damned if we do and damned if we don't.
Load More Replies...Electronic transactions save trees and money for paper checks as well.
When I was thinking about buying a mesh bag for farmers market and produce my husband reminded me that we had the plastic bags from our last trip. We could use them as they were intended over and over so far 10 trips.
Eh----in SOME cases I have found a shady business changing the digital "receipts" or adding charges not agreed on but they modified what you agreed to. Paper copies help alleviate this, as it will stand up in court. At least in most cases paper copies are from a tree and recycled, so are renewable is sustainably sourced. But I get the idea...
no it's from a building instead of it being washed our with plastic into the sea it is filtered cleaned and put into pumps like that one
You'd love Zürich. Fountains with drinking water everywhere. https://skyplan.ch/maps/zurich-water/ https://bucketlistjourney.net/water-fountain-zurich-switzerland
I think that better way is the drinking fountains in public buildings; saves water.
Remember the big chain shops employ teams of psychologists to make us buy more. Try taking a list - and a pen. As you shop write the prices on the list. Add them up as you go along. Repeat the first sentence to yourself as you shop.
I just mutter to myself the types of aisles I'm going through when I'm looking for stuff, 'cuz the store chains aren't always laid out the same way from one location to another: canned veggies and fruit; not much here I want, junk-food; avoid, soft drinks; get some diet soda, frozen; get frozen veggies, dairy; find almond milk and eggs, produce; find my veggies, meats and cheese; get cheese if I need some, etc. I manage to avoid the snacks and junk-food aisles easily that way. :-) I also have the shopping list and a pen to keep me focused.
Load More Replies...But cleaning clothes because you don't have full load is NOT better for the enviroment, washing clothes wears them out, so clothes should be washed only when needed.. Also use clothes more than one day :)
Or use a modern steam washer that automatically adjusts and uses far less water in the first place
However, be aware that many newer (water saving) units use much less water that a FULL LOAD may not get as clean. <<<conundrum
YES yes yes! This drive me nuts as some of my housemates will do a load of laundry for only 3 items of clothing! I can't stand it.
What my family does too when the load seems too small (Although I always get lazy and my laundry basket piles up so my load can be a little too full... XD
I need a straw to drink with due to a medical problem, so I have bought folding metal ones and silicone ones to use when I'm out. The aren't the easiest to clean but I am getting used to them.
This show part of the problem. Warning: contains scenes some may find upsettinghttps://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/03/22/plastic-straw-removed-from-turtles-nose-by-marine-biologists-in/

Load More Replies...Don't use bamboo, the bamboo forests are much more important. Or you can just NOT use straws like me!?
Straws should only be given if asked for. They make bendy paper straws.
I had a few packages of plastic straws prior to learning what a hazard they are. I live alone. I just wash the few plastic ones I use (pink for iced coffee, blue for juice/water, etc. I’ve used the same three-four straws for several years and that’s as extravagant as I get). I don’t buy clothes or shoes - I’m wearing my mom’s sketchers after she passed. They’re barely holding together. I do one load of laundry a month, down have a car, buy from goodwill, no movies, no fast food, preparing for a vegetable garden. My grapefruit tree produces tons of fruit. My one guilty pleasure is internet access. My tablet and phone are old - cracked - held together with packing tape. You can see the “guts” of the iPad because the corners are basically gone but for the steel frame. I haven’t bought new clothing in years. I need new sneakers - I’m old with bad back problems. Sketchers allow me to walk to the store but they’re expensive. I’m I’m frugal and careful about waste to a fault.
I honestly don't see why you would ever need a straw anyway. Just sip from the glass.
I gather you don't have kids. :D Even some adults need straws because they're physically unable to sip from an ordinary cup.
Load More Replies...Who would honestly use a glass straw, I get silicone, bamboo and even steel but not glass. Its just weird to me honestly
Last year I put my small Rosemary in the living room as my Christmas tree

Popcorn strings and apples as decoration can be a sweet treat for the local residents :)
Load More Replies...my family don't go tree shopping too often, we had this one plastic tree we had for years. We had it my older sister's whole life if not longer, then had to replace it when she was about fourteen because it started shedding. It was sad, I loved that huge tree.
I dream about this possibility every Christmas when so many trees are wasted.
HHMM. Not sure about this one. We cut our own from a local farm down the street where cut trees are replaced with new seedlings. After the holidays, our tree goes to a neighbor with goats; in the past, some have gone to the county for use in ponds/lakes as fish havens. Goodness knows we need to keep our local small farmers so AgriBusiness won't completely take over.

You CAN choose the clean alternative, by using renewable sources of electricity and smart solutions to stop dirty emissions of production. We're supposed to be smart - so let's show it!
Watch Hugh's war on plastic. That "recycle plastic" most often means "ship off to a poor country and let it ruin their nature".
Load More Replies...I guess the best thing to do os NOT to buy delivery food and just cook instead or go to the restaurant. You always know where your food comes from, you don't have extra packaging and cutlery and don't force someone to come over to your place certainly with a motorized vehicle, so less pollution too.
I used to work for a food delivery company and they actually suggest that you always give the customer cutlery just in case. :(
yes that's why i use corn husk silk floss, it's cruelty free!
Load More Replies...Lingon, do you understand the definition of the word "vegan"? Apparently you do not. What the heck "one box of vegan anything kills millions" mean??? Vegans do not eat, wear, anything from animals - meat, dairy, eggs, honey, etc.; vegans do not wear fur or leather, do not patronize industries which torture animals for entertainment or pleasure, do not buy cosmetics tested on animals; vegans lobby against heinous torture of animals in laboratories, called science, when far more reliable, sophisticated non-animal methods of research and testing are available.

Except that recycling also uses up tons of resources (in both the production and the disposal of the product), creates massive pollution, and most items (I.e. plastic) can only be recycled a small number of times before the product become too inferior. Sure, recycling's better than landfill, but reusable is still best.
According to my chemistry teacher anything will work as long as it's an alkali so it can neutralise the acid. And then breath mints do the rest.
Dishwasher detergent is easy to make, too. I used mine for the first time last week being in this house for 2.5 years - forgot about it. Fill the cup 3/4 with baking soda, topp off with salt, add a few drops of dish soap, lemon juice and white vinegar. I think. It’s easy to Google. I won’t use it again for the next few years, but I was sick and it was a great treat.
