With so much information being thrown at us on a daily basis, it’s easy to lose focus and drift into apathy. Who cares about so many things at once, anyway?

No wonder more and more people are drawn to this old-time form of systematized information accompanied by great visualization. We’re talking maps. And not just dusty maps from your attic, but the most fascinating pieces that present things we know (and the ones we don’t!) in a refreshing light.

This subreddit has already earned its name as the ultimate destination for fans of cartography, so below we prepared a new batch of the most intriguing examples. After you’re done, be sure to check out more features of maps we did before here, here, and here.

In case you're wondering, because I looked it up immediately when I had learned about it: It's manmade, was made in 1991, is 116 meters long, and a 1:10,000 scale of Finland! The construction engineer was Esko Sääskilahti. It was going to be the Centerpoint of a tourist village, but that part was never completed. The lake took a week to excavate. Hope you enjoyed learning some more! :-)

Something similar in Sweden. Our two largest islands look like a mirror of our two largest lakes. (Not exact shapes, but still similar). Like if Sweden is a big sticker someone pulled of from the sea, and two areas got stuck.

So, Ptolemy (ancient Greco-Roman astronomer) believed that there must be a large southern landmass in order to be a counterweight balance to the large landmasses to the north, and from the 5th century, this hypothetical land began to be included on maps, even though it had never been seen. So if you look at ancient maps, many of them included it in varying sizes

Terra Australis Incognita. Hypothetical continent in southern hemisphere that turned out to be Antarctica. Perhaps that protrusion on the left might be Australia? It was "discovered" not long after this map was drawn. People suspected there might be land.

In Louisiana they're called parishes and not counties. Doesn't really make a difference to the map but it's the only state other than the not included Alaska (boroughs) that doesn't call them counties.

I am American and lived in the UK/Germany for half a year, can confirm their food is fresher, more locally grown, better quality and healthier overall than the options you see in a US store. Also, we didn’t have a car because wherever you live, there’s always a grocery store within walking distance, so you burn more calories to access your calories. And you could only bring home what food you could carry in bags, so you prioritized what you needed and didn’t have room for superfluous (junk food) items.

If I remember correctly (documentary), the obesity epidemic in the United States began around the mid-20th century with the introduction of TV dinners. Frozen meals typically contain very high amounts of sugar, sodium, calories and fat, among other preservatives and additives while having low nutritional value. They became extremely popular during first wave feminism when more and more women were entering the labor force and families then lacked the ability to have home cooked meals every day (when I say "lacked", I mean it was Mommy's job to cook and nobody else would pick up the slack, demonstrating why feminism is needed). And with the advent and ubiquity of frozen meals came an explosion of frozen foods in general and hence, widespread obesity.

TV dinners also came along fairly soon after the creation of suburbs, which as mentioned earlier increased the need for cars and decreased walking. Less exercise + worse food = obesity.

I dont know where you're based Hawkmoon but most American food isn't deemed fit for EU consumption; either from its ingredients or it's treatment of animals. For example some savoury food would have to be classed as a dessert in the EU due to its sugar content. *edit* spelling

On a cross country trip I stopped at a Bob Evans in Indiana. The cover photo on the menu was a stack of pork, potatoes, some other meat, more potatoes covered in gravy. I found in the lower right corner inside the menu a chicken breast with rice. While waiting for my food I looked around and all the patrons were ENORMOUS. A family sat across from me with an ENORMOUS father, ENORMOUS mother and two ENORMOUS kids and they were stuffing their faces with piles of food. Quite a sight to see.

All these children who were never taught curiosity, who never sat on their parents’ lap with a world map. Ireland is a tricky one. In 1800, there was an act of union between Great Britain and Ireland. The UK of GB +I were at war with the Russian Empire from 1807 - 1812. However, the independent nation of Eire, the Republic of Ireland, has a policy of neutrality, and hasn't been made war against any other nation since its creation. This policy of neutrality is being tested just now with the war Russia is inflicting on Ukraine.

Assuming we are referring to Russia prior to the formation of the USSR - The answer is Yes. Russia (an Allied Power) fought Germany (an Axis Power) in WW1. After the formation of the USSR, Russia was once again part of the Allied Forces, and fought against Germany.

NO for Poland? Think again. When Nazi Germany invaded Poland from the west, The USSR invaded Poland from the east. It was when the Nazis & the Communists had a pact together. They split up Poland.

The coolest fact is that beginning with Stalin, children of russian chiefs, red aristocracy offsprings live happy and wealthy lives in "enemy states". So it is nowadays. Their yachts are in Monaco and Miami, children in Oxford and LA. War on Nato, for real.

I'll add that Italy has a history of tourism from Sweden in the 60s and 70s. You can imagine hords of tall, blonde haired, blue-eyed youngsters coming every summer to our beaches, how attractive they must have looked to the average Italian. It might have contributed to that the fact that, during years when the catholic morals were still very pressing, Sweds (and generally people from up north) were more emancipated and uninhibited, much more willing to "have fun" (ehm). The myth of the Svedese, the beautiful young statuesque woman who's not a stuck-up like Italian girls supposedly are, is still present.

These are what we call dialects within China. The average educated person in China speaks their areas dialect and mandarin. So if a nonnative speaker says they are learning Chinese, they probably mean mandarin. There are over 500 dialects in different areas and many people have to learn up to 6 to communicate with elders in different areas. These dialects are pretty much different languages, but they share roots and traditions with the National language, so it is easier to call the dialects dialects and their nationwide tongue, the national language.

This is a mother tongue map. Mandarin is the lingua franca and defacto/dejeure official language of China. No why it's so slow on the uptake and why the PRC can't manage to stamp out the local languages (and the PRC tries very hard to) is that written Chinese is practically all the same. Identical grammar and Something like 98% overlap of characters and 95% overlap of vocabulary.

    Terran

The local dialects/languages are taught in school and are mandatory, even for Han chinese living in that area. They do not try to "stamp out" local languages, they try to preserve and teach them.

In the old numbers in Welsh, 92 is 'two on ten on four twenties'. In the new Welsh numbers it's ' nine tens two'. Various Gaelics (Scottish, Manx and Irish) all used the vigesimal system (base 20).

not only France and Denmark : Vigesimal system : In the £sd currency system (used in the United Kingdom pre-1971), there were 20 shillings (worth 12 pence each) to the pound. In the imperial weight system there are twenty hundredweight in a ton. Twenty (tyve) is used as a base number in the Danish names of tens from 50 to 90. Twenty (ugain) is used as a base number in Welsh from numbers up to 50 (deg a deugain) and from 60 to 100 (cant). Twenty (fichead) is traditionally used as a base number in Scottish Gaelic. Twenty (otsi) is used as a base number in Georgian for numbers 30 to 99. Twenty (hogei) is used as a base number in Basque for numbers up to 100 (ehun). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vigesimal

Rounding the ages on the map before coloring makes for a slightly confusing picture. For example Portugal and Spain. Portugal 29.0 correctly gets the 28-<30 color, Spain 29.5 gets the 30-<32 color. I was 29 years old until the day I turned 30.

Schooling generally, some people move away from home for other reasons of course but we have several specialised schooling options starting at age 15 (or younger if you advanced quickly which still happens). Also part of schooling is the higher education aspect, it is not that uncommon to go straight into higher education without working in-between (for good or for ill) and for some people this happens before you reach age 18. Also worth noting is that in Sweden it is quite important to actually register your primary residence properly as it affects a lot of things that might be important and as such, even if you are not legally an adult if you live away from your parents long-term it should be registered.

I don't mind a school uniform, my kids wear one but it's not strict at all - as long as they're the right colours there's plenty of options so you can afford it and the kids are comfortable- shirts, polo shirts or t-shirts, jumper or cardigan with or without the logo, then trousers, shorts, skirts, pinafores - it's simple. I don't agree when it the extend to a ridiculous level of strictness - sending kids home for stupid reasons or dictating their personal appearance like hair colour. I like that schools here recognise a uniform is more of a guideline and understanding there's bigger battles that should take priority over something as daft as skirt length or if your trousers are made of denim

My school has no school uniform but it does have a strict and quite frankly sexist dress code. No shorts above the knee, no tight leggings without a long top, no tracksuits (that one isn’t sexist, the principle is just weird). I prefer to wear jeans but someday I’m going to come in in tight leggings with “Obeying an unjust law is itself unjust” written on the a*s, just so I can.

Forest cover of Germany: around one-third, just like the US

    cogadh
    Community Member
3 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

One third of 88.4 million acres compared to one third of 2.43 billion acres. The remaining US forested land is almost 5 times larger than all of Germany. Also, the US lost essentially 10 percent of it's total forest to human activity (logging and such) before conservation efforts in the late 19th/early 20th century kicked in and the losses basically ended. The historical forest coverage in the US was slightly more than 43 percent (large portions of the central US have always been open plains, or inland seas). That said, this comparison is a little unfair. The majority of Germany's forest losses occured during the middle ages, centuries ago. Conservation and reforestation efforts in the more modern times have been hugely successful; at least as, if not more successful as those in the US.

Historically the U.K. was about 15% forests, then decimated down to 5% during the World Wars. The U.K. then decided to act pretty swiftly and we're now back up to 10% and seem to be forever planting trees. Such a shame the ancient woodland was ever lost, but it's never too late to try and reverse a trend. Unless of course you're the Brazilian Government and don't really care.

sadly ironic that we embargoed Cuba because "they're communist and don't hold free and fair elections and they're communist" but we never embargoed the USSR, or East Germany, or any other communist country. In fact it seems to me that we only embargo small countries that somehow humiliated us, ie Cuba (Bay of Pigs) , North Korea (by simply existing when we don't want it to) and Vietnam (by winning a war against us). Denmark had the death penalty on the books for quite a while longer than it was used, WW2 period excluded. It was customary for the king to change the verdict to life in prison. The last person to be executed by the royal executioner sought the death penalty actively and was "pardoned" several times until the king was like whatever, bring out the axe. After WW2 is was back but as soon as someone had to do it, it was thrown around and ended at the police who where not big fans of that job either so it ended rather quickly.

The US should probably be moved to the "Legal but not used" state, if you remove the tenure of Trump (and wouldn't we all like to do this) there would only be 3 death penalties carried out in Federal Courts since 1972, now State Courts are different, it's legal in about half the states and illegal, or a moratorium has been called, in about the other half

Italy's rate is a little flawed. Most terrorist attacks happened in the 70's and 80's. They're called "gli anni di piombo" (the years of lead) because there have been a series of politically motivated attacks in those years: bombs and kidnapping in particular. The last one was in 1992 when two judges, Falcone and Borsellino, were assassinated by the mafia. I cannot recall another terrorist act after that.

Many of these bases are not true bases. Poland is 700 Airmen on an annex of the Polish Air Force base for example. Come countries bases are less than 50 military personel for example. It's a very loose definition of "base". In Australia the US has no bases of their own, just Annexes of Australian Bases at the invitation of the Australia for example. Also they have Israel on this list, the US does not currently have a base in Israel, nor have they ever had, what they have is a CIA listening outpost (Not Military), the US stores equipment at 2 Israeli bases as regional depots, but no US soldiers there, and in 2017 the US Signed a deal with Israel to create the first ever US military contingent in Israel at the Israel Defense Forces Air Defense School to help train US military personnel on the Iron Dome system as the US arming the military with a lot of them, however it hasnt actually opened yet, its just a agreement on paper to open one.

In the two right maps I think the grey bit is Guyana (official language English), Suriname (official language Dutch), and French Guiana (French territory), so none of these are related to Portugal or Spain (i.e., the Iberian Peninsular => Iberoamerica). However, Belize (English speaking, up in Central America) appears to be coloured green (although it's kind of small, so hard to tell). Not sure what the drawer of this map means by 'Latinoamerica'---I'd probably not include the English and Dutch speakers, but include the French speakers since French is a Latin-derived language.

It’s actually a moniker established by the British when King George was addressing the upheaval in the colonies. Saying one is “United States of American” was shortened purely for ease, as Canada has Canadian and Mexico, Mexican. Whereas all North Americans can refer to themselves as “North Americans”. It’s not political or arrogant, but merely a means to easily explain. So this has zero to do with how “arrogant” Americans ate (BP: home or America bashing!!!) not was it a moniker created & established by Americans. To think such is not arrogant, but purely ignorant. However, if you the British, then Spanish & Portuguese and THEN United States of Americans,l were wrong for using this name and you have a better one that’s a single word, I recommend you share it far & wide so we all may adopt it without being accused of arrogance.

Romania is NOT given name only, wtf? Traditionally, it's given name patronymic name, if "Petre" had a son the son's surname would then be "Petrescu" or "Petreanu" nowadays it's just family names after your first/given name, maybe you'll have a middle name) it's pretty much similar as how in Scotland you'd have "Mac" meaning "son of" in traditional surnames.

I wouldn't say it's so much as 'richer' as it is access to resources. Poor people in America still live longer because they generally don't have to hike to fetch water (maybe not so much a good thing ☺) or are subject to locusts and have access to vaccines.

So does the North of Germany compared to the South, and I'm wondering if it's possibly because it's not split by gender: I know plenty old, ooold ladies around here, but no man older than 70, and that'd screw up the average!

It's very difficult to evict someone in China for construction projects, so if a homeowner decides to stay, the construction company is forced to build around the house. It's quite common in China to see lonely houses in the middle of a highway.

This is relatively easy to explain. BRICS (Brazil, China, India, South Africa) doesn't like america policing the world, and so, it in general opposes american motions just to annoy the americans. Obviously, the islamic-majority countries also think the rest of the world should let them persist with islamic law. So they're also red/yellow. Hence, Green is just a symbol of whoever is politically allied to america.

Hopefully! Our cowardish gov should, if I were to decide, hand over a hundred modern tanks (we have 266 main battle tanks in current service) and at least a squadron each of Eurofighter and Tornado planes, of course with ammo and maintainance material and education of the people to operate and repair, all to be invited to germany for that purpose. This is not only two countries, but two fundamentally different approaches towards the relation between people and authorities, and there sure is a wrong side in this, and a right side. Let Ukraine down equals let freedom down. Fück Putin.

To be fair, under the reign of Henry VIII (other despots also available) there was zero tolerance to all other religious denominations not just Jews. There was a collective hate towards all 'others'. Shamefully this hasn't improved enough.

There’s also many cultural diasporas throughout the US. From Hasidic Jews in Brooklyn, to Russians in Sacramento to Polynesians & Japanese in Hawaii. Each of these contribute to their regions to create very unique , authentic cultural norms that don’t exist anywhere else. That the vast majority of Americans are never realistically (if at all) are represented in media, particularly internationally, it’s left an unfortunate stereotype of who and what an American is. That Michigan has more Muslims per capita doesn’t quite fit the stereotype at all.

Since the source is the World Bank and successful Capitalism is the measure, it has seemed obvious that collateral economies like barter, collectives, and self-sufficiency are the only options for the nations who have been impoverished by IMF policies. Cuba refused to get "bailed out" (plunged into trillions of debt whereby natural resources can be transferred to the global banking agencies). This poster is propaganda. Note that the standard is the US dollar, which is an irrelevance outside US international trade agreements, most certainly irrelevant to Latin America which has suffered a lack of effective economic status in the Western Hemisphere due to US policies.

I wouldnt say Ecuador is in that bad of poverty. My dad is from there, and my family and I visit about every 18 months. Yes, income is pretty low, but so are prices! A two liter bottle of soda is about 50 cents. Compared to the US it looks pretty impoverished, but really the people don't consider themselves poor.

concerning France the number is a bit biaised since there is another system : the "Grandes Ecoles" " A grande école is a specialised university that is separate from, but parallel and often connected to, the main framework of the French public university system. The grandes écoles offer teaching, research and professional training in single academic fields such as engineering, architecture, business administration, academic research, or public policy and administration. Many winners of the Nobel prize attended a Grande école. Of the 29 persons who have served as President of France, 17 attended a Grande école." There are 150 "grandes ecoles" in France.

The french national anthem is insane in a good way. FULL FRENCH ANTHEM: Arise, children of the fatherland, the day of glory has arrived. Against us from the tyranny. The bloody standard is raised. The bloody standard is raised. Get along in your campaigns. Roar these fierce soldiers, they come right into your arms. Cut the throats of your sons and your companions. To arms citizens, form your battalions. Let's walk, yes let's walk. May impure blood water our furrows, furrows. . . . . Also, it's called `La Marseillaise`, or `Poetic Lover`.

American pizza is much different than Italian pizza. The two major types of pizza in the United States, Neapolitan (round, thin crust) and Sicilian (square, thick crust) are both not found in Italy nor do they have any connection to the regions for which they are named. So pizza, in this context, is an American invention that forms part of our cultural cuisine.

Spain is delightful and if you look closely, there are many, many properties, especially in the more remote areas that have been abandoned for no apparent reason apart from the youngsters wanting to leave the family home and once the generation above dies, there is no one to look after or live in those houses, consequently, if you are organised and persistent you can buy perfectly structurally sound houses for a reasonably low price - ideal for someone like me who doesn't like people much and I enjoy my own company.

These rarely take into account population density. The blue areas are the cities, which have, in most states, many more people than in the country.

This varies year to year. Fertility rate is the best guide to how well the population explosion is being overcome For a very long time, that in Spain was the lowest in Europe. I'm delighted that it's mapped in finer detail than just country by country. 2.1 is close to stable population (ignoring immigration). Anything less is population decline.

This right here is the reason why we know, indisputably, that Anne Boleyn was innocent of the charges brought against her by Henry VIII and Thomas Cromwell in 1536. For those unfamiliar with Tudor history, Anne was Henry's second wife, charged with treason, adultery, and incest along with five men. All were found guilty and were executed, Anne being the first English queen to be put to death. She was convicted and sentenced on May 15, 1536 to death by beheading via axe and Henry commuted it to a swordsman who was in Calais, France. Supposedly. However, Anne was executed on the morning of May 19th, four days later. Given our knowledge of Tudor travel times, it would have been impossible for the swordsman to be summoned to London from Calais, make the journey, and be there on May 19th to execute Anne. He would have needed at least a two week head start, conservatively. The only way for him to be there was if he were summoned in advance, proving that she was going to die no matter what.

We should additionally consider that the other map starts at 1946 (after WWII), otherwise Germany and Japan (among others) would also be marked as bombed. But indeed a interesting development.

yes. However the map looks similar to this for the last 40 years or so, prior to that democrats were the SOUTH and were the racists, and republicans were the north and LESS racist. However, somewhere in around Nixon's time, the democrats and republicans swapped platforms. So now, you see, rural -> racists, cities -> less racist. It has to do with exposure. The more you are used to different people the less racist you become.

For those unfamiliar with US politics, red represents counties that typically vote Republican, and blue represents counties that typically vote Democrat. Also, typically, blue counties are more densely populated than red counties, so even though the map looks like buy far the majority of the US votes red, the reality is that the slight majority of Americans vote blue.

Serbia doesn't recognize Kosovo for obvious reasons, at it declared independence and they don't want it to go, as it is the spiritual heart of Serbia, as in 1389 the famous battle of Kosovo where the Ottomans sealed their defeat is very important to many people. And then NATO steps in when Yugoslavia, at the time and still isn't WASNT EVEN A PART OF NATO.

Everybody in the Deep South, slightly above middle class up to but not quite loaded has at least one gay guy friend that helps with stuff nobody really needs help with. They hire a caterer, have a florist deliver flowers etc. And the friend tells these people 'Oh! Heaven! NO! Do not put those next to that! For Heaven Sake!" For an hour, then he leaves comes back an uoyr later looking like he's spent a week at a spa. And the Hostess still looks frazzled but tells everyone she could ot have done it without his help. Now there's a wonderful growing community of people that seem gay, some that Don't seem gay until you see them with a child or pet and their whole aura charges from a brick wall to a soft envelope around their family unit. I see older people in their late 80s look all side-eyed at these people. People younger than that, usually don't seem to even notice. They are all just humans. I'm in rural areas 45 minutes north of Atlanta.

A grim reminder that Russia's aggression did not begin with Ukraine. They've been doing this since the mid-90's when they first invaded Chechnia (visible on this map).

Interesting that Mexico and/or Spain got more than or equal to France in total. Also fascinating that Russia received so comparatively little

1918-22, since it shows Ireland as part of the UK, Petrograd rather than Leningrad, and Russia rather than Sovit Union. Can anyone narrow it down further?

interesting so where the british first settled it's pronounced distinctly, but elsewhere it fades out.

no. MDY is forced on everyone else by Excel. Otherwise we'd all be using sensible formats like ymd/dmy.
