Architect Kathryn Larsen Sketches Her Trip To Japan And It’s An Amazing Way To Get To Know A Country And Its Culture
5Kviews
Architect Kathryn Larsen spent some time in Japan during her summer break making amazing sketches of her trip along the way. At some of the locations, she received stamps and gorgeous stickers to adorn her drawings. A lot of the time, she would have locals stop and ask her about the drawings and tell her stories about the locations she was sketching.
These drawings give us a beautifully artistic view of the Japanese and their culture. Kathryn visited Nara, Kyoto, Tokyo, Osaka, Amagasaki, Nishinomiya on her journey, focusing on the traditional architecture of the region she was in. Regarding this visit almost like a pilgrimage, she visited mostly shrines and temples, praying at each one when she completed her sketches.
Kathryn Larsen is an architect located in Copenhagen, Denmark, who works closely with seaweed and other sustainable building materials.

What does she use to color these? Very pretty.
From Kathryn Larsen: I draw using Stædtler pens, usually 0.3 and 0.5. Then I paint on top with my Windsor newton travel watercolor set. If you would like to see a photo of my entire setup, I have one here https://www.instagram.com/p/B0u0d-iHLa2/?igshid=f5i7zx817hiy&fbclid=IwAR3O1hZ0FmZXjtg8aKrg0cwwfisLvC5GJYf9JW9JRAnwQ7tvOW8_PVrkWF4 Thank you!"
Looks like watercolour to me, but it's just a guess.
These made me miss Japan even more than I did already...
I just love the idea of a visual journal. I tried this on my last trip but my stupid friends didn't want to stay in one place long enough for the paint to dry. Next trip I'll just go alone. What am I saying? No I won't. Anyway, really lovely pictures. 😊
