Food packaging waste equals to about one-third of all trash, costing governments billions of dollars each year in disposal expenses. Bored Panda has collected a set of images, proving this huge plastic waste contributor to the global waste crisis could be reduced significantly.
Product packaging solutions often become the subjects of heated debates. While the eco-minded consumers want it to be as minimal as possible (meaning fully recyclable), manufacturers often fire back that they don't want their products to start decomposing in the store or become an easy target to shoplifters and put many layers of wasteful and entirely unnecessary plastic wrapping. And while some of their arguments have reasons behind them, a lot of the time the amount of plastic wrap is needlessly excessive. Do we need a pill to be wrapped in three layers of plastic? Or, better yet, casings for coke cans?
Now, we do agree that a zero waste life can be quite challenging to lead sometimes, but it is something we should all aspire to if we don't want to evacuate from our planet Earth in the near future.

If Only Nature Would Find A Way To Cover These Oranges So We Didn't Need To Waste So Much Plastic On Them
whilst this certainly seems is a complete waste of packaging for most, there are a lot of peole out there with chronic arthritis and other disablilities that makes peeling fruit either incredibly difficult, extremely painful or both. Opening a small plastic tub is nothing compared to peeling an orange, so this sort of thing is a God-send for them.
I don't think they could peel the plastic film off the packaging if they can't peel an orange?
Load More Replies...they should sew mini leather jackets for them, then they'd be protected (people would think they were in a gang and leave them alone) and look cool.
@Libssuc, you seriously need to chill. Yes, there are ignorant people commenting, but what right do you have to call them names and be nasty to them? And yes, we get it, you've had cancer. For that I am truly sorry. However, you make it sound like you are spiritually enlightened about this situation and better than anyone else on here. I am sorry to inform you that you are not.
I have arthritis in both my hands and peeling an orange is extremely painful. So for most this a waste, for me a help.
This is horrible. If you can’t peel the orange, just cut it. This is the kind of thinking that is causing the trashing of our planet.
What if you're in Britain? There's NEVER need to carry a knife there evidently. You act like only people shopping for a groceries for the house ever go there, and no one EVER stops at the grocery store for lunch to pick up some healthy foods. They just going to whip out the knife and cutting board in the car? Get their fingers all sticky when they have to get right back to work? And what do you mean trashing of the planet? English speaking countries that would be selling this product contribute a fraction of a percentage of trash pollution. The phone you are using to comment here is made with parts from China from factories that have no pollution restrictions that make the air so bad it's not even safe to go outside without respiratory protection, you hypocrite.
Load More Replies...I wonder if a lot of the peeled and packaged fruits are to prevent food waste. A lot of how people buy food is based on how it looks. Maybe the companies are taking the fruits that don't look so good and processing them in the hopes people will purchase them instead of letting them go to waste because they have a blemish or a bruise.
Also, I read in the newspaper the other day that children are much more likely to eat an orange presented like this. It does seem wasteful, though.
Load More Replies...They have only done the easiest part.. I mean peeling the cover is nothing.. remove those white stringy (apparently it's called pith, didn't know this) thing.. That would be some help.
Individually Packaged Coke Cans
In areas where vermin is high keeping tins/cans clean is a big issue. If a rat has walked across (read urinate) that can and someone then drinks out of it they are in for a fun few days.
Qwerty is right. If you are buying a canned beverage in the local store, rather the crevice is or is not cleaned is a huge issue. Most people drink with a straw but there is still a bit of back-splash. The straw solution works with a bottle. When I lived there before, we washed the can and then wiped the water dry since the water is contaminated too. Admittedly, I have not seen this packaging either.
Load More Replies...It's to make coke chicken, you use the container to marinate the chicken with.
It is most likely to discourage theft. Putting it in that container makes it harder to put into a pocket or bag.
Um. I'm pretty sure a can of Coke is ALREADY an individual package?

Well, once I ordered a pair of socks and they arrived broken...one sock was separated from the other. Now every time I wear them I have to put one sock on one foot and the second sock on my other foot...very inconvenient!

I bought a hat recently that was packaged in plastic, then air wrap in one box, then another huge box with peanuts surrounding the 1st box. I bought the same hat again for someone who like it. The second time it was only in the one box. Amazon doesn't seem to have much consistency with packaging but lately the packages have been getting bigger & more wasteful. I was actually happy that the second hat didn't have the redundant packaging.
I use plastic mailing bags/envelopes for sending small things like that. As a customer, I often appreciate gratuitous packaging which I can reuse for my own online sales, but when I have to go and queue up at the sorting office to collect a parcel containing something that would have easily fit through my letterbox if packed appropriately, that's just annoying.
Load More Replies...That's what I was going to say. This is what Amazon is infamous for.
Load More Replies...This Is Just Plain Ridiculous
It takes 3 men and a boy to get these nuts open - WHY WHY WHY the plastic???
That's to stop consumers from using them as bowling balls....see the one with the 3 holes in the top row!
Amazon, I Don't Think The Box Was Big Enough
yeah, they could've used one of those envelope packaging things for this.
I would have thought they forgot to send the actual chip because I couldn't find it in the box. Big packaging for small objects is actually less safe than mailing it in a box that is the right size. Or even an envelope or something! But hey, who would buy a chip off Amazon??
The size of the box isn't just determined by what is inside, but also outside. Amazon will put items in bigger than needed boxes in order for the box to be big enough to keep the other boxes around it from shifting around once the whole lot of them are shrink wrapped onto a pallet. It's rarely this extreme, but not inconceivable.
A computer decides what size box to put with purchase...needs better programing
Yes dont need these big boxes for something small and the bubble stuff too much
Your order most likely consisted of other things besides an SD card.. nice try though!!
I Ordered 5lbs Of Sugar Free Jelly Belly's Online... They Arrived Individually Wrapped! Why?
who has that much time and how would program a machine to do that or even deem it worth creating a machine in the first place
Flavors of candy are typically made in separate batches and then mixed together. So if the end of the line is packaging, they can easily individually wrap the candies (why is a good question). Although if you were in an office and offered candy, individually wrapped ones lessen the chances of the others being contaminated.
Load More Replies...It actually does have a reason. This is for when people leave candy out for the public. Would you rather eat a jelly bean when you know that some stranger's hands have been in them or a jelly bean wrapped up and probably clean?
I was thinking the same. I used to work at a place where we put out candy for the public.
Load More Replies...Probably because sugar free candy gives you massive diarrhea. Maybe its a good thing?
I came here to say the same thing! There's a hilarious product review on Amazon for sugar-free gummi bears and the GI hell they wrought on the writer.

Load More Replies...I agree. My one friend used an empty blank DVD case to hide couple of his 'adult movies' and one time I was at his home and I needed an empty DVD case for something. Single Wrapped Potatoes
Potatoes are packaged like this so you can "bake" them by throwing them into a microwave for 4-5 minutes. It actually works and I have done this with sweet potatoes in the past. Saves a lot of time, but in the end, it isn't truly necessary.
Agreed! I've used these before also, no hole poking required. These would probably be helpful for people with arthritis or elderly for example. I'll admit, I used it for convenience cause I HATE poking holes in potatoes, my dang fork gets stuck every single time and maybe I'm too weak lol
Load More Replies...Ploy. Potatoes are typically sold by weight. This just allows the company that put the bar code on it to sell them all for a single price, not by weight.
for a little old lady (me), these are very convenient....the wrap is microwaveable. I don't need a whole bag of potatoes...just want one...simply pierce the plastic and nuke it....Voila...instant baked potato.
Thread jack, but I remember after the Tylenol poisonings I think in the 80's, almost all grocery companies upgraded their packaging to be tamper proof or tamper resistant. However, sugar & flour is still sold in pretty leaky bags, considering how much loose sugar & flour I see on their shelves. I wonder why that is?
Ok, I'm gonna chime in on this to say that these microwave better than ones not in the plastic. And the sticker has the microwave instructions on it.
i would bet they plastic wrap them so that they have something to stick the barcode sticker to in order to separate the name branded more expensive baking potatoes away from the regular (every other kind) baking potato... still craziness
Individually Packaged Slices Of Bread
These are commonly used in hospitals. It is far more hygienic than using unwrapped bread. Still wasteful, though.
This is usually for food service - schools/hospitals /soup kitchens. Better than getting a stale slice of bread that has been sitting out for who knows how long.
This actually makes sense. Having worked in a hospital this is the only way to get slices of bread fresh to the patients bed. They are packed individual for those that have only one slice. Most are packed in pairs or even by three or four for the ones with more appetite.
I don't understand: how long does it take to get bread from the hospital kitchen to patient's bed?
Load More Replies...Stack of 3-4 slices in 1 would make much more sense. This is plain stupid.

I would not buy this avocado. I prefer to be the one to cut it and seeded. To me this just seems like the avocado is not fresh and will spoil
Thank you Teal Cat, I was not bragging at all. Josie Jones. What did I do to you, where is all this coming from? Did me saying I would not buy this product offend you somehow? I am attacked for such a silly thing, just WOW.
Load More Replies...So if you've not eaten an avocado before, it's like any other fruit; you want it to be soft, but firm at the same time. You cut it and remove the stone any number of ways and you eat the flesh. I'm sure there's some kind of tutorial on Youtube if you're still too stupid to do it.
I appreciate Sobeys' response, but I have been to many grocery stores that either provide a card with instructions detailing how to handle fruit like pomegranates and avocados or provide a Q-Code to a website that has videos explaining the same information. Either is preferable to adding unnecessary packaging to something like a piece of fruit.
They say that it is for convenience, but wouldn't it be harder to get through that packaging? It seems like it is specifically packaged for inconvenience.
Exactly! It would be harder or just as hard, and if not: a lot of packaging waste! Avocados come in their own natural package! Why package it with waste material? People are crazy!
Load More Replies...This is just a waste, and if someone doesn't know how to cut and de-seed an avocado then it's about time they learned !!!
A Tic Tac Novelty Box That Has 60 Individual Boxes Each With 6 Tic Tacs... So Much Plastic
You start apreciating this sort of wasteful packaging when you have small kids
or you could teach your children that plastic is not good ;)
Load More Replies...I would actually buy this JUST for the plastic packaging (I would eat the tic-tacs too)! Tiny containers for organizing parts are stupid-expensive if you want to buy them on their own.
The only place to get cheaper small plastic containers is at the Dollar Tree store.
Load More Replies...Oh my. But those ARE cute! I could think of something I'd use them for.... recycle them at least with some other use.
Yep! A work friend bought one of these at an airport. She shared the little packets out to everyone at work. I hate the idea of plastic waste but i thought it was a cute little gift. Not quite the same as wrapping peeled fruit in plastic.
Load More Replies...Seems convenient if you were idk making little gift bags for birthday parties or something. Ya it's wasteful but this doesn't seem to even be close to the same awfulness as the individually packaged coke cans.
That’s actually really cute! Use it for cereal boxes for doll houses,
This Knife Is Far Too Small For The Packaging
This is to make sure someone cannot easily slip the knife into their pocket and walk out with it and then have a weapon. It's theft proofing.
It is so the producer of the knife does not need to re-tool equipment for every different sized knife, and to make the product stand out on the rack in the strore.
It's cheaper to manufacture a one size fits all box that fits the largest knife than customizing the boxes per knife size.
How was he killed Ducky? Well Jethro, I think it ma have been with the plastic wrapper of a knife...
Amazon Sent My Bubble Wrap Wrapped In Paper
How would you represent with your hand for rock-paper-scissors? Do scissors beat both?
Load More Replies...Been there, done that. Sometimes you just have access to distinct box sizes, not any old box size, and if the smallest box the thing fits in is too large, you HAVE to pack it out with something to stop it moving around in transit which both annoys the hell out of postal people (and they might not accept it if it's heavy and stuff moving around - not that this roll of bubble wrap is heavy) but also damage the box and and fall out. I admit none of this is relevant to that roll of bubble wrap and it could have been the exception but thing is when packing loads of stuff, you get faced with that call, and make it one way or the other and move on, it's not like anyone is being paid CEO rates to make those decisions ... anyhow, just sayin'
If they hadn't protected the bubble wrap, you would have been the pure joy of popping all those bubbles!

These Organic Oranges Individually Wrapped In Plastic
Organic, yeah right... All s**t is organic! ;-) And they're not really healthier...
I would say this is to prevent pesticide contamination, but most organic fruit is processed by the same companies and individuals that process non-organic fruit, and up to 80% of it gets contaminated with pesticides during processing and while it sits in the stores
**army crawling through a vegans nightmare world** Must protect the organic!!!!!!
They’re organic and that makes them special. Hence the special packaging to set them apart as being extra special. Plus, the extra packaging makes it easier to justify paying more for them.

Less Waste They Say
top tip - leave some potatoes wrapped in tinfoil in various places around your house. then, in the event of a house fire, you'll have a delicious snack to eat while waiting for the fire brigade to arrive.
I love the fact that the excessive packaging proudly announces "less waste".
Mabye there supposed to be more than one in that package?
Load More Replies...Less waste might _possibly_ refer to buying a 5 lb. bag of potatoes but not eating them all before they rot. But then, there's usually loose potatoes to buy individually...
OMG everything about this is just--NO! "Less waste and no fuss", written on a massive piece of plastic, complete with a handle so you can proudly tote your potato around. And those instructions! Poke with a fork and put in oven for about 60 minutes!!! Egad! Do you have any idea how much energy an oven uses--and they're implying to do it for just one potato at a time! LOL This is surreal.
I have never used this phrase before and I honestly never thought I would. However, this picture has left me no choice. So here goes... I can't even.
I the grocery stores I frequent, they just leave piles of potatoes out, and you can pick how many you want, and the cost is measured by weight. I don't understand THIS.
This Is Some Next Level Laziness
Yeah and same with peeled eggs. Some sweaty hairy guy with meaty hands, probably...😷
Load More Replies...Now this one is nice for people with reumatism and such, this is so much more useful than the orange above.
Totally right you are, not even just that, any mobility issues or disabilities. My mum has limited mobility in the hands and nerve damage so these kind of products are so important. She gets so happy when she finds stuff like this because it's something she can do herself, she's so reliant on me and my dad to peel and cut and prep when she comes across stuff like this it just makes her day because it's one less thing for us to do, it provides some level of independence for her.
Load More Replies...It's called pith, I'm surprised you don't know that? These products are specifically for people with limited mobility, it's not a laziness thing.
Load More Replies...Well, as someone wrote earlier, we may be jumping to too many conclusions. Apparently this is just the thing for people with serious arthritis or other disabilities. Oranges and other fruit can be quite difficult for some to peel and some elderly don't have friends or family around to do this for them. I can see where there is a market for this in some places. We shouldn't be assuming too much about this as laziness.
Yep, lazy a*s people like the ones who have arthritis and are unable to peel fruit. Does nobody think these days?
I work with people with arthritis and mobility problems. They would rather buy the whole fruit and have an adapted tool at home to peel, or have a caregiver peel a piece or two of fruit for them. Much cheaper, too.
This SATA Packaging
they should fill those pouches with helium, would reduce the weight and cost of postage. they could then float the boxes to you?
Except that Helium is a finite, non-renewable resource.
Load More Replies...yeh but you will notice this important box between other boxes : )
I get this kind of packaging from online a lot. It is lazy packaging employees who do not want to hunt for the right size box, or else they are too pressured to take the time. Either way, excess postage expense and bad supervision.
I've often thought, what an ingenious way for someone to spread a plague or other virus.
Oops, meant that as a reply to the helium thread. lol

I think I get this. They prolly buy bulk boxes "not labeled for individual retail sale" and this is a work around.
They needed to make 4-pack onsite and didn't have anything else but those. What would you have done? Stapled them together? Um wait... actually that would've been better.
I'm from England and we're all trying to cut down, don't know where these are from but it's just plain lazy & wasteful !!
There's Silly Amazon Packaging But Then There's This
I'm thinking that they do this to cut cost. Seriously!!!! Which is cheaper, a box or a padded envelop? Which is recyclable, a box or a padded envelop? Once the air is removed from those BIG bubble packaging things, and compress the plastic that's left, there is VERY little to dispose of! As for postage..... It cost just as much to send in a padded envelop as it does to send something in a box (if you use the right size box, for this item it IS the correct size). Especially so since companies like AMAZON don't use the postal system. They use carriers who charge the same whether it's in a box or a padded envelop!!!! Gotta think logically!!!! AMAZON does!!!! And no, I am not affiliated with them.
I've found Amazon to be the biggest wasters in terms of boxing. Along with all that blown up bagged stuffing they send.
I just got the exact same enormous box with two batteries in it!!! I think it may actually have to do with standardized shipping of hazardous materials (which lithium batteries technically are).
It's also stupid and environmentally unfriendly to buy just 2 batteries online & have them shipped from wherever etc. This applies to all stuff under $5 and I wish people would realize it.
If There's One Thing The World Needs It's More Disposable Plastic Packaging
People are pigs. Often when you buy bananas they look like they've been through the wars because they've been manhandled by so many slobs. It's also a way to sell overripe or overly green bananas. If they come packaged, people won't be able to take them off the bunches and leave them behind. ... I still think it's ridiculous, but I can see where they're coming from.
Sometimes you cannot use a whole bunch before they go bad, so take just a few.
Load More Replies...who the f'ing genius thought of this c**p would not buy just because of the waste
You put green or under-ripe bananas in a bag to ripen them quickly. Here this is not only monumentally wasteful, but this will reduce the shelf life by accelerating the ripening process so they go bad faster. Unless they are packaged to be distributed on site- lunchables style- to a group, it makes no sense to stock them this way.
This type of packaging actually makes the bananas go brown faster. Such a stupid idea.
They may be tired of people breaking off one or two of the bananas. I've been to stores where they look like they've been through the war.
I recently had a craving for banana bread, and went to the grocery for some "ripe" bananas. The yellow bananas were on sale for $.49/lb. The brown ones were $.79/lb.
Amazon Used Protective Packaging To Ship My Protective Packaging
Loads shifting on trucks can cause accidents. This would prevent the bubble wrap from rolling. Most of these pics are ridiculous, but I get this one
It’s the same with planes. If stuff shifts it will change the weight balance that has been carefully calculated and worst case cenario is that the plane crash

These Individually Wrapped Premium Strawberries
This is quite common for luxury fruits in Japan which is often given as a present (since other types of presents take too much space in one’s home). Remeber the whole square watermelon thing? While the rest of the world giggles a bit, I can tell you these fruits are absolutely perfect i every way. I’ve never seen or tasted more consistently perfect fruit.
Yes, it usually is a rare variant. It's more like a gift box. It'd be improper if you give it in some groceries bag. Certainly doesn't mean you respect the people you gave it to.
Load More Replies...Not the best example of wasted packaging... at a price of just under $25 per strawberry I would want mine packaged really well too!
I saw a fancy fruit gift shop in Yokohama sell a lovely box of these huge grapes and strawberries for 20,000 yen....that's about 200 dollars!!
This is the only one that makes sense - at least in a way, because you buy these as a precious gift for someone else.
But this is exactly he problem. Mankind should NOT be expecting PERFECT produce. Nature does NOT do perfect. I live in orchard country in Maryland. In my lifetime we've lost too many young people to cancer, ones in their 30s because of their job spraying poison on trees to get "perfect" fruit. It's literally costing lives and for what, a perfect strawberry or peach? What's wrong with tomatoes with dings? It taste the same, cooks the same. A ding doesn't hurt anyone yet in many processing plants that tomato will be tossed in the garbage. Yet we have schoolchildren going without lunch because school boards won't give them free food because of money. It's ludicrous and insane. A hundred years from now descendants will look today and say we were idiotic doing things like this. Just as we do now with Puritans and bizarre punishments and other things they did we would never do today but they thought completely normal.

And then there is the problem of getting into the packaging without cutting your jugular.
This is BS, clearly this item was placed in this container by this person, noticed there is no back to it!
And the worst part, the plastic will never decay or return to nature. If this isn't recycled it will still be in the ground in 500 years. I REALLY hope everyone recycles.

I don't know why some idiot downvotes you, you're totally right, plus it's a small item easy to lose. It baffles me how many people don't seem to understand this. Plus it's cardboard which is recyclable everywhere practically. I live in Ireland and even we get a recycling bin per home, it's for all sorts of materials: paper, tissue, cardboard, tins, aluminium some plastics too...

In my country you can always return the used laps to the shops that sell lamps. They will recycle the old lamps in a proper way. :) But it is true, the 'energy saving' lamps are much worse than the old lightbulbs, those usually break in less than one year.

Does Anyone (Besides Me) Think It's Odd That These Organic Free-Range Eggs Come In A Plastic Container Rather Than An Environmentally Friendly Recycled Paper One?
Yes, it's odd. We also buy organiz free-range eggs and they come in a cardboard box, which we then recycle.
If you garden, those cardboard egg boxes are great for starting seeds. Once the little plant is big enough to go in the ground, just separate the sections and plant the whole thing. The egg carton will disintegrate into the soil so you don't have to disturb your baby plant.
Load More Replies...Luckily in my country we recycle plastic. But I still think much of the plastic packagings are a waste, even though we recycle it. Much products don't need plastic packaging. Until this post, I did not know countries like the USA (given a big country as an example, next to my tiny country: The Netherlands) do not recycle plastic? At least, that is what I get out of all the comments. Why?? It is so much better for the environment!
We do recycle plastic, but some of the types of plastic used in packaging can't be recycled in all areas. The more remote rural parts of the USA don't have the same facilities as more metropolitan areas - and you might be surprised at how empty a lot of the country is.
Load More Replies...They come in the clear container so that people don't have to open the container to make sure the eggs aren't broken. I know plastic sucks, but this one has an obvious "why".
The cartons are made from recycled soda and water bottles, and can be recycled themselves
I’d rather go to the farm and see the hens running free, and get their eggs! Fresh eggs, don’t automatically have to go in the fridge, if you don’t wash them, they are good for a certain amount of time, left on the counter! Now that’s fresh!
Plastic can be recycled too. But yeah... they're usually in some sort of already recycled product made from used cardboard or paper mulch.

Load More Replies...That has to do with acceptable packaging standards for lithium batteries. The static bag is actually fire-retardant as well. It seems ridiculous, but the same rules need to apply to all lithium cells. Buy them at a local store next time.
There is a reason for this. Note the fact that this is a battery. We must remember that shipping this type of product is difficult. If that was airfreight, they actually broke the rules by repackaging it in another box. If that thing had self-shorted... that box would have been a fireball, considering all that cardboard and paper...

That tube of cream looks scared for being surrounded by those beefy Airbags.. :P
You're kinda stupid Amazon. You know their passing the cost on to you for this.
That note would just encourage them. People need to communicate more forcefully re waste as we will soon be suffocating in it.
With 7 more pages to go, I think I can already say that Amazon (the company) is trying to kill the Amazon (the river), the jungle around it and the planet it sits on... And all those people buying small, smaller and tiny things to be shipped at their doorstep are helping a great deal!
I wish people could opt out of these things. That way, when their package is lost in the mail because the thing in the box was moving around so much it knocked the box over, they can quit whining.
LMAO! It is sooooo silly.. I cannot figure why someone would order that c**p from Amazon.
Pointless Packaging
But I'd argue that the presentation is bad. The cover is too busy, doesn't show the product well, and is too cutesy. Then the inside isn't view-able until the box is opened and even then is ruined once the markers are being used. Also, the colors aren't in rainbow order which just makes me mad.

This is one I can actually understand. When I was living alone, I preferred to buy chicken like this so I didn't have to worry about thawing it for 9 hours at room temperature if I froze it, or worse, have all my chicken go bad and stink up the fridge.
This is so you can cook them ONE at a time and not have to cook them all when you open the package. Some people just need to complain without thinking.
Again, I like these packages. When it's just 1-2 people and the smallest packs you can find are 3+ pieces, you have to repackage to freeze things anyway. It's nice to be able to just pull out what we need instead.
This is for the freezer -- so after you eat one, you freeze the rest -- you know, so you're NOT wasteful.
I always buy the family packs and package them for the freezer, it's basically a cheaper version of this
Perfect for single people. I hate having to separate and wrap all of my chicken breasts before freezing. I gave up on home cooking for that reason. Grocery stores are geared toward families and buying in bulk. Not everyone cooks for multiple people. It would be nice to have this.

this can be usefull for kids at school. school get so crazy about lunches... yesterday i give my kid a banana and he can't even throw it at school... he had the bring bad the old smelly rip banana peel at home without packaging... he lunch bag was a mess!!!
I see this as lunch slices for kids. It's no different than giving them a little bag of chips...this is healthier, actually.
Do you not understand how wasteful this is? How a parent can take a watermelon and slice it and put into a reusable baggie for their kids lunch and teach their kids that there is NO REASON to use so much plastic? Sounds like no one taught you about the environmental blight due to plastic that is taking over the planet. Idiot.

Now I see where this would come in handy in the packaging of udis gluten free bread as I can never seem to separate the slices.
We went from odd packaging to sausage for a couple bucks pretty quickly.....
I call bull$h!t on this one. Budget bread is 99c a loaf at supermarkets in New Zealand. I can guarantee you it does not come with paper between each slice. Someones put paper napkins between them to make it easier getting the single slices out for a sausage sizzle which is a common saturday morning sports fundraiser. A piece of bread with a bbq cooked sausage, fried onions and tomato sauce for a couple of bucks...mean brekkie! Sometimes the orders come from different warehouses and that is why you get more than one box for a single order - still doesn't explain such a big box though.

Because they sell tiny packages (for restaurants and such) and decided to package a bunch of them together.
For cafeterias, perhaps, where they need individual portions packaged with salad or pasta portions.

And for those that wonder why we have lots of PET's- Tap water is not a viable option as it has too much chlorine and the pipes are from the glorious days of the communist regime!

Individual black nail polish and black lipstick were the #1 seller at the costume shop I worked at. Until we started getting them blister packed (like the picture). Sales went way down. Harder to steal, I guess.
Is This Huge Box Really Necessary For Five Small Packages Of Doritos?
That's not a huge box. Look at the bottle of salsa next to it. Also a box is biodegradable.
So Wasteful
I think that is so it can hang on a bike's handlebars.

Most coffee shops in Vietnam do this, but it's not actually that wasteful though. We usually move around by motorbikes, not cars, so this is to make it easier to hang the cup on the handlebars.
It is common at my place .. Easy to handle when u drive a motorcycle
I found it very clever. Once I got one I used it over and over again to transfer my coffee with my motorbike. But I keep it to reuse it. Not just throw it away again and again.
This Coconut
Individually Wrapped Candies
i think these are meant to be for communal bowls and such like at restaurants. just so you aren't getting the germs off every customer before you.
Lifesavers does this too, it is so you can carry some in your pocket or purse. Get a grip on reality folks.
Simply Insensitive
This is needed for warehouse storage -> see square watermelon to get an idea. Some of these are stupid. Others, not so much. Stop blaming packaging and just recycle! I blame non-recyclables (like mixed plastic and paper)and poor education far more than useless packaging. Just saying.
That almost makes sense, until you remember that the shampoo and lotion isles exist, full of bottles that don't need boxes around them. This is clearly a small bottle, but the travel size bottles which are this size don't need boxes. I think this raises a legit question: why is it that luxury is so often associated with waste? Why is it considered classier to have more unnecessary packaging to sell something, like in this example? And also, what is gained by trying to shut down conversations about this? Why is the onus on the consumer to recycle (which also takes more resources and manpower to do) and not the manufacturer to be more responsible, thus stopping the problem before it starts? Wanting to take better care of our planet and manage our resources better should be a common goal of all people. We aren't "blaming packaging." We are blaming the very real people who make these choices and should be held accountable for their actions.

For stack-ability in storage and on shelves. Also to be in a sealed package to avoid tampering. This is one NOT to complain about.
Not just for warehouse storage anyone whose worked retail knows people pop these things open to "sample" without permission and some people end up buying a half empty bottle
Most of these, I agree, too much packaging or wrapping, however, the individually wrapped candies, I don't see nothing wrong. Especially when you have candies out for people like in offices, I don't wanna eat candy that have been touched by kids or other ppls hands. So, that one I agree.
Most of it is outraging. But you can't blame online shops for using packages and protections... or else you have to stop buying online (or use it wisely)
Thank God, most of this insanity can't be found in my country, because due to a recycling law you can leaver outer packaging in the stores. I have no idea why people even by this. Plastic often contains BPS and to make sure a banana or acocado doesnt brown, it'll be treated with something. So eat something that is even more laden with chemicals than 'just' the usual pesticides.
Before anyone starts railing against waste, please remember that things like pre-peeled fruit are really useful for disabled people.
Maybe but this is a small minority of people who have these difficulties. It doesn't mean everything should be packaged liked this.

Maybe the companies are taking the fruits that don't look so good and processing them in the hopes people will purchase them instead of letting them go to waste because they have a blemish or a bruise.
You are right in many ways. I used to work produce at a store and we used to "process" the not so good looking fruit into these convenience packaging so we could sell the fruit that was bruised and wouldn't sell whole. TBH the store made more money that way.

I would like to see company's that over package with plastic to be fined and not the end user who has to do actual work and then gets the blame if it isn't right. On the other hand I haven't seen such crazy packaging here either, I think people would go apeshit and the 'newspapers' would have a field day. Also you can unwrap stuff like that at the till and leave it in the shop. However, it's disgusting.
I feel like any 'fresh fruits/veggies' are not fresh if they've been packaged.
