Food packaging waste equals to about one-third of all trash, costing governments billions of dollars each year in disposal expenses. Bored Panda has collected a set of images, proving this huge plastic waste contributor to the global waste crisis could be reduced significantly.

Product packaging solutions often become the subjects of heated debates. While the eco-minded consumers want it to be as minimal as possible (meaning fully recyclable), manufacturers often fire back that they don't want their products to start decomposing in the store or become an easy target to shoplifters and put many layers of wasteful and entirely unnecessary plastic wrapping. And while some of their arguments have reasons behind them, a lot of the time the amount of plastic wrap is needlessly excessive. Do we need a pill to be wrapped in three layers of plastic? Or, better yet, casings for coke cans?

Now, we do agree that a zero waste life can be quite challenging to lead sometimes, but it is something we should all aspire to if we don't want to evacuate from our planet Earth in the near future.

Scroll down to learn why we need to rethink packaging and vote for the worst or most ridiculous images!

whilst this certainly seems is a complete waste of packaging for most, there are a lot of peole out there with chronic arthritis and other disablilities that makes peeling fruit either incredibly difficult, extremely painful or both. Opening a small plastic tub is nothing compared to peeling an orange, so this sort of thing is a God-send for them.

I don't think they could peel the plastic film off the packaging if they can't peel an orange?

they should sew mini leather jackets for them, then they'd be protected (people would think they were in a gang and leave them alone) and look cool.

@Libssuc, you seriously need to chill. Yes, there are ignorant people commenting, but what right do you have to call them names and be nasty to them? And yes, we get it, you've had cancer. This is horrible. If you can’t peel the orange, just cut it. This is the kind of thinking that is causing the trashing of our planet.

What if you're in Britain? There's NEVER need to carry a knife there evidently. You act like only people shopping for a groceries for the house ever go there, and no one EVER stops at the grocery store for lunch to pick up some healthy foods. They just going to whip out the knife and cutting board in the car? Get their fingers all sticky when they have to get right back to work? And what do you mean trashing of the planet? English speaking countries that would be selling this product contribute a fraction of a percentage of trash pollution. The phone you are using to comment here is made with parts from China from factories that have no pollution restrictions that make the air so bad it's not even safe to go outside without respiratory protection, you hypocrite.

I wonder if a lot of the peeled and packaged fruits are to prevent food waste. A lot of how people buy food is based on how it looks. Maybe the companies are taking the fruits that don't look so good and processing them in the hopes people will purchase them instead of letting them go to waste because they have a blemish or a bruise.

Also, I read in the newspaper the other day that children are much more likely to eat an orange presented like this. It does seem wasteful, though.

Your self-righteous sanctimonious attitude is nauseating. I didn't have help when I was going through chemo. I didn't have nurses with me to peel the orange. Do you get it now sweetheart? I too had to have non childproof caps put back on my medicine was that a waste of plastic for you. I'm so sorry I upset your delicate Sensibility.

In areas where vermin is high keeping tins/cans clean is a big issue. If a rat has walked across (read urinate) that can and someone then drinks out of it they are in for a fun few days.

Qwerty is right. If you are buying a canned beverage in the local store, rather the crevice is or is not cleaned is a huge issue. Most people drink with a straw but there is still a bit of back-splash. The straw solution works with a bottle. When I lived there before, we washed the can and then wiped the water dry since the water is contaminated too. Admittedly, I have not seen this packaging either.

I bought a hat recently that was packaged in plastic, then air wrap in one box, then another huge box with peanuts surrounding the 1st box. I bought the same hat again for someone who like it. The second time it was only in the one box. Amazon doesn't seem to have much consistency with packaging but lately the packages have been getting bigger & more wasteful. I was actually happy that the second hat didn't have the redundant packaging.

I use plastic mailing bags/envelopes for sending small things like that. As a customer, I often appreciate gratuitous packaging which I can reuse for my own online sales, but when I have to go and queue up at the sorting office to collect a parcel containing something that would have easily fit through my letterbox if packed appropriately, that's just annoying.

The size of the box isn't just determined by what is inside, but also outside. Amazon will put items in bigger than needed boxes in order for the box to be big enough to keep the other boxes around it from shifting around once the whole lot of them are shrink wrapped onto a pallet. It's rarely this extreme, but not inconceivable.

Flavors of candy are typically made in separate batches and then mixed together. So if the end of the line is packaging, they can easily individually wrap the candies (why is a good question). Although if you were in an office and offered candy, individually wrapped ones lessen the chances of the others being contaminated.

Potatoes are packaged like this so you can "bake" them by throwing them into a microwave for 4-5 minutes. It actually works and I have done this with sweet potatoes in the past. Saves a lot of time, but in the end, it isn't truly necessary.

Agreed! I've used these before also, no hole poking required. These would probably be helpful for people with arthritis or elderly for example. I'll admit, I used it for convenience cause I HATE poking holes in potatoes, my dang fork gets stuck every single time and maybe I'm too weak lol

Ploy. Potatoes are typically sold by weight. This just allows the company that put the bar code on it to sell them all for a single price, not by weight.

Thread jack, but I remember after the Tylenol poisonings I think in the 80's, almost all grocery companies upgraded their packaging to be tamper proof or tamper resistant. However, sugar & flour is still sold in pretty leaky bags, considering how much loose sugar & flour I see on their shelves. I wonder why that is?

This actually makes sense. Having worked in a hospital this is the only way to get slices of bread fresh to the patients bed. They are packed individual for those that have only one slice. Most are packed in pairs or even by three or four for the ones with more appetite.

So if you've not eaten an avocado before, it's like any other fruit; you want it to be soft, but firm at the same time. You cut it and remove the stone any number of ways and you eat the flesh. I'm sure there's some kind of tutorial on Youtube if you're still too stupid to do it.

I appreciate Sobeys' response, but I have been to many grocery stores that either provide a card with instructions detailing how to handle fruit like pomegranates and avocados or provide a Q-Code to a website that has videos explaining the same information. Either is preferable to adding unnecessary packaging to something like a piece of fruit.

More than likely to keep the roll of plastic from shifting inside the box during transport. If it shifts, it could possibly fall from wherever it is and take other boxes with it, which could have breakable items in them.

Been there, done that. Sometimes you just have access to distinct box sizes, not any old box size, and if the smallest box the thing fits in is too large, you HAVE to pack it out with something to stop it moving around in transit which both annoys the hell out of postal people (and they might not accept it if it's heavy and stuff moving around - not that this roll of bubble wrap is heavy) but also damage the box and and fall out. I admit none of this is relevant to that roll of bubble wrap and it could have been the exception but thing is when packing loads of stuff, you get faced with that call, and make it one way or the other and move on, it's not like anyone is being paid CEO rates to make those decisions ... anyhow, just sayin'

They’re organic and that makes them special. Hence the special packaging to set them apart as being extra special. Plus, the extra packaging makes it easier to justify paying more for them.

OMG everything about this is just--NO! "Less waste and no fuss", written on a massive piece of plastic, complete with a handle so you can proudly tote your potato around. And those instructions! Poke with a fork and put in oven for about 60 minutes!!! Egad! Do you have any idea how much energy an oven uses--and they're implying to do it for just one potato at a time! LOL This is surreal.

Totally right you are, not even just that, any mobility issues or disabilities. My mum has limited mobility in the hands and nerve damage so these kind of products are so important. She gets so happy when she finds stuff like this because it's something she can do herself, she's so reliant on me and my dad to peel and cut and prep when she comes across stuff like this it just makes her day because it's one less thing for us to do, it provides some level of independence for her.

Well, as someone wrote earlier, we may be jumping to too many conclusions. Apparently this is just the thing for people with serious arthritis or other disabilities. Oranges and other fruit can be quite difficult for some to peel and some elderly don't have friends or family around to do this for them. I can see where there is a market for this in some places. We shouldn't be assuming too much about this as laziness.

I work with people with arthritis and mobility problems. They would rather buy the whole fruit and have an adapted tool at home to peel, or have a caregiver peel a piece or two of fruit for them. Much cheaper, too.

I'm thinking that they do this to cut cost. Seriously!!!! Which is cheaper, a box or a padded envelop? Which is recyclable, a box or a padded envelop? Once the air is removed from those BIG bubble packaging things, and compress the plastic that's left, there is VERY little to dispose of! As for postage..... It cost just as much to send in a padded envelop as it does to send something in a box (if you use the right size box, for this item it IS the correct size). Especially so since companies like AMAZON don't use the postal system. They use carriers who charge the same whether it's in a box or a padded envelop!!!! Gotta think logically!!!! AMAZON does!!!! And no, I am not affiliated with them.

People are pigs. Often when you buy bananas they look like they've been through the wars because they've been manhandled by so many slobs. It's also a way to sell overripe or overly green bananas. If they come packaged, people won't be able to take them off the bunches and leave them behind. ... I still think it's ridiculous, but I can see where they're coming from.

You put green or under-ripe bananas in a bag to ripen them quickly. Here this is not only monumentally wasteful, but this will reduce the shelf life by accelerating the ripening process so they go bad faster. Unless they are packaged to be distributed on site- lunchables style- to a group, it makes no sense to stock them this way.

But this is exactly he problem. Mankind should NOT be expecting PERFECT produce. Nature does NOT do perfect. I live in orchard country in Maryland. In my lifetime we've lost too many young people to cancer, ones in their 30s because of their job spraying poison on trees to get "perfect" fruit. It's literally costing lives and for what, a perfect strawberry or peach? What's wrong with tomatoes with dings? It taste the same, cooks the same. A ding doesn't hurt anyone yet in many processing plants that tomato will be tossed in the garbage. Yet we have schoolchildren going without lunch because school boards won't give them free food because of money. It's ludicrous and insane. A hundred years from now descendants will look today and say we were idiotic doing things like this. Just as we do now with Puritans and bizarre punishments and other things they did we would never do today but they thought completely normal.

This might be used to not confuse the people handling the shipment. An empty pallet could look like the cargo is missing or the pallet might disappear and become one of all the other pallets at a warehouse (I work in logistics). This way it's clear that the pallet is the shipment. But it still looks silly.

These don't really bother me just because something this small is way too easy to steal so putting it in a large package not only deters theft but also makes it harder for employees to lose it .

Plus it's cardboard which is recyclable everywhere practically. I live in Ireland and even we get a recycling bin per home, it's for all sorts of materials: paper, tissue, cardboard, tins, aluminium some plastics too...

In my country you can always return the used laps to the shops that sell lamps. They will recycle the old lamps in a proper way. :) But it is true, the 'energy saving' lamps are much worse than the old lightbulbs, those usually break in less than one year.

If you garden, those cardboard egg boxes are great for starting seeds. Once the little plant is big enough to go in the ground, just separate the sections and plant the whole thing. The egg carton will disintegrate into the soil so you don't have to disturb your baby plant.

Luckily in my country we recycle plastic. But I still think much of the plastic packagings are a waste, even though we recycle it. Much products don't need plastic packaging. Until this post, I did not know countries like the USA (given a big country as an example, next to my tiny country: The Netherlands) do not recycle plastic? At least, that is what I get out of all the comments. Why?? It is so much better for the environment!

    Alissa Valerio

We do recycle plastic, but some of the types of plastic used in packaging can't be recycled in all areas. The more remote rural parts of the USA don't have the same facilities as more metropolitan areas - and you might be surprised at how empty a lot of the country is.

So you can use one half of the avocado without the other half going bad the next day. I live by myself, it's hard to keep fruits and vegetables fresh for long periods of time when you only eat a small amount because it's just one person that you're feeding. So stuff like this is actually very helpful

simple, we have a lot oof these. the first pack is keeping all flavours together. the second to store a nice amount with the flavor shown. the last is an average wrapping. basically so you know what ur eating

Starburst is essentially the same candy and does not have this issue. Outer packaging to keep them together, thin paper wrap with the flavor printed on it inside. No extra middle-man wrapper needed.

I actually prefer buying garlic this way because I don't go through it very fast. I waste much less this way since I only open what I need. Where as with a full bulb I end up wasting half the cloves because they just sit there until I eventually need garlic again.

A standard pencil would write for about 35miles, but I mean, who has ever needed to draw a line that long? a marathon is only 26.219 miles long, it used to be 26, but the royal family were sitting beyond the finish line, and insisted the winners cross the line past them, so they moved the finish line. anyway, I'm rambling, how are you?

Most produce has been covered in edible wax, such as carnuba, that protected from grms and oxidization but people want organic now. Without he was, the produce is more prone to quick ageing, bruising and such so they need to be covered so picky people will still buy it.

This is one I can actually understand. When I was living alone, I preferred to buy chicken like this so I didn't have to worry about thawing it for 9 hours at room temperature if I froze it, or worse, have all my chicken go bad and stink up the fridge.

This is so you can cook them ONE at a time and not have to cook them all when you open the package. Some people just need to complain without thinking.

Again, I like these packages. When it's just 1-2 people and the smallest packs you can find are 3+ pieces, you have to repackage to freeze things anyway. It's nice to be able to just pull out what we need instead.

Perfect for single people. I hate having to separate and wrap all of my chicken breasts before freezing. I gave up on home cooking for that reason. Grocery stores are geared toward families and buying in bulk. Not everyone cooks for multiple people. It would be nice to have this.

The thing is, when you order one small thing, you have to know that the delivery is not going to be very efficient in any way. Go to the story and buy it, or buy a bunch of groceries at once. Order for some grocery delivery place. They aren't going to do this.

People don't know it, but there is a very logical reason for why they package things like that!!!! Seriously, once you learn why it makes perfect sense!!! I kid you not!!!! Take on account the cost, the protection, the recyclbility of the packaging AND the cost of shipping, a box with big air bubblewrap/recycled paper and shipping a padded envelop by carrier, not by post! You'll see why they do it!!!!!

Amazon doesn't make custom packages for each product they sell. They put the product on whatever box they have and fill the rest with paper or air bags. If you don't want "excessive packaging", you are free to shop at a physical store.

Not only is this grossly wasteful, but watermelon tends to form a skin if exposed to air for a long time after being cut. It also needs a lot of preservatives to maintain any semblance of its natural taste or texture. So this would just be a very gross thing to eat.

Sounds like no one taught you about the environmental blight due to plastic that is taking over the planet. Idiot.

Not really. It’s paper, and more economical than me, having to throw half a mouldy loaf away as an adult living alone.

This is just regular budget bread you get here in New Zealand. It doesn't come with paper between the slices. That's been done to pre-prepare for a sausage sizzle for fundraising or the like.

I call bull$h!t on this one. Budget bread is 99c a loaf at supermarkets in New Zealand. I can guarantee you it does not come with paper between each slice. Someones put paper napkins between them to make it easier getting the single slices out for a sausage sizzle which is a common saturday morning sports fundraiser. A piece of bread with a bbq cooked sausage, fried onions and tomato sauce for a couple of bucks...mean brekkie! They cheap asses though, cos they haven't put any budget marg (fake butter) on the bread. Melted fake butter makes a sausage sizzle way better.

Sometimes the orders come from different warehouses and that is why you get more than one box for a single order - still doesn't explain such a big box though.

A lot of big retailers have picked certain standard-size boxes that are all they use, no matter how small the item. That's why so many tiny items come in boxes 27,000 times too big for them, unfortunately.

I don't see this as wasteful, i mean have you -seen- the size of produce bags you'd normally put things like this in? that's actually less plastic used this way.

could have used paper rather than plastic, but still would have used a huge amount as that looks like a big magnet and magnets can create some issues in transport. Again- paper or cardboard- recycled or made out of cellulose or hemp non-bleached and we would save on the pollution side.

In Scotland they call them neeps. They have the purple tinge as opposed to turnips which are cream to yellow colour. Both are tough root veg like spuds carrots and yams, and have no need of extra packaging.

All PET drinks come in packages like this. They are used for storage and carrying around to shops. In my country, they are on ALL PETs in the stores (in case you wish to buy bulk, instead of just one - also for easy carrying). That plastic allows for stacking. You can grab it and carry the whole thing (Trust me, it's tough plastic). And 100% recyclable.

usually the 0.5L do come in large packages like 12 or 24 so this is still excessive but yup we do buy a lot of PET's around here and most people don't recycle. luck has it that in the weekends homeless or just really poor people provide a service that the city is unable to provide. And for those that wonder why we have lots of PET's- Tap water is not a viable option as it has too much chlorine and the pipes are from the glorious days of the communist regime!

I had a bag of Lifesavers that were individually wrapped, too.

This is needed for warehouse storage -> see square watermelon to get an idea. Some of these are stupid. Others, not so much. Stop blaming packaging and just recycle! I blame non-recyclables (like mixed plastic and paper)and poor education far more than useless packaging. Just saying.

That almost makes sense, until you remember that the shampoo and lotion isles exist, full of bottles that don't need boxes around them. This is clearly a small bottle, but the travel size bottles which are this size don't need boxes. I think this raises a legit question: why is it that luxury is so often associated with waste? Why is it considered classier to have more unnecessary packaging to sell something, like in this example? And also, what is gained by trying to shut down conversations about this? Why is the onus on the consumer to recycle (which also takes more resources and manpower to do) and not the manufacturer to be more responsible, thus stopping the problem before it starts? Wanting to take better care of our planet and manage our resources better should be a common goal of all people. We aren't "blaming packaging." We are blaming the very real people who make these choices and should be held accountable for their actions.

The roses were a bit overboard, but they do the same packaging w/ makeup.

So it sits in order on a store shelf, and does not look like a mess when a customer or kid pushes on the front one, throwing the whole bunch of em out of order

For stack-ability in storage and on shelves. Also to be in a sealed package to avoid tampering. This is one NOT to complain about.

Not just for warehouse storage anyone whose worked retail knows people pop these things open to "sample" without permission and some people end up buying a half empty bottle
