Waste, waste, waste. That’s almost all you ever hear people talking about on the streets and in cafes. Whether it’s wanting to eliminate the use of plastic by replacing straws with pasta in Italy or coming up with new plastic recycling ways, there are all sorts of small steps that we can take to make Planet Earth a cleaner, healthier, greener place to live on.
However, one area where some but not enough progress has been made is in the packaging of certain products. It is mind-boggling how much plastic packaging can be used for even the tiniest things. All to make them look attractive and make us want to buy them. There’s so much packaging that you could almost build a fort out of the trash!
To show you just what we mean, Bored Panda has collected some of the most egregious examples of unnecessary packaging designs found in the dark corners of the internet. So scroll down and upvote the pics that make you fear for the future of the world. Send your pals the link to this list so that they realize what a big problem product packaging is as well. And share any ideas for possible solutions to the waste management crisis in the comments.
Scroll down for Bored Panda's four interviews on the topic with experts, including with Greenpeace's Graham Forbes, the Global Project Leader for the Plastic-Free-Future.
“For years, companies have sold people on disability — the notion that we can use something once, for a few minutes, then simply throw it away,” Forbes explained. “The problem is, we know now that there is no such thing as ‘away.’ Less than 10 percent of the plastic waste ever made has actually been recycled, with the vast majority ending up in our oceans, landfills, or incinerated — polluting communities around the globe.” Scroll down for the full in-depth interview.

I Received A Large Package From Amazon Today
This drives me absolutely mad- and Amazon does this c**p all the time.
And yet they sent me a glass bottle of supplements in a padded envelope! And of course it arrived broken! 😕
During Their Mating Season, The Masking Tape Must Be Separated To Avoid Unnecessary Violence
Someone is very over their crappy job at Amazon. And no matter how shittily they treat employees, people still order form them. Shame on the person who supports Bezos.
Considering that only a handful of retail stores don't treat their employees shittily (Costco being one) I'm curious where you shop.

My Dell Order Of Six Ink Cartridges Arrived Today
If the owner fails to build a cardboard castle of this, they are a soulless monster...
They should save them for when they have to live in a box after spending all their money on ink.
Load More Replies...This looks more like six orders of one cartridge. It would make absolutely no business sense to add such a phenomenal amount of shipping costs to a single order of six cartridges. Unless this is the work of a disgruntled employee being terminated.
You see some of them were exposed to COVID and have to quarantine in isolation
Sorry but I find nothing humorous about this. It's really disgraceful. My company does the same thing.
Unless they were separate orders, all six could’ve easily fit in one box, with just a little tissue paper in between to cushion them. Solution for companies that ship: stock multiple shipping options, such as smaller boxes and cushioned envelopes, and combine shipments to the same address as much as possible.
Wouldn't it be so much better to send those six containErs of printer ink in just ONE of those boxes? There's plenty of room for all six of those containers to fit into one of those boxes.
In Ukraine, postal operators (for example, Nova Poshta) use such things to increase the cost of delivery
It May Look Like Our Designer Roo Is Hibernating, But This Is Just The Packaging Used To Protect The Eco-Friendly Light Bulbs
That industrial butcher paper is 100% recyclable, and bio-degradable. Shred it to bits and add to compost.
I don't disagree with your comment, but the carbon footprint should also be taken into account. It's not just the packaging itself that's problematic.
Load More Replies...Our Cat would KILL for all that paper! Plus, I use it to line the kitchen compost bin so when I tip it out it doesn't need so much cleaning and it adds fiber to the compost. I also save a lot of it for packaging up stuff to send out.
I'd take half of it home to use a drawing paper, packing paper, the possibilities are endless
Destroying The Planet One Apple At A Time
Fifty pence for a single Apple? No wonder Brits are all skinny. Here in America apples go for $2.40 a dozen. (£0.50 is about $0.85 each.).
Why would you even NEED a packaging for apples? They're pretty tough and I've literally never seen them sold in any way other than bulk or like, a farmer's basket.
one apple in England= about £0.85. but wait! + £ 10.99 for packaging!
Why is food so expensive in Europe and USA I get fresh apples in Kenya for 0.20$ each at most.
It depends on income, too. Sometimes you can't compare a single price.
Load More Replies...Some British supermarkets take the packaging waste problem very seriously. For example, Waitrose has impressed its environmentally-conscious shoppers by offering them the possibility of buying food and drink without any packaging.
The Packaging Of Lol Dolls
That is very expensive rubbish too. Have you seen the price of LOL merchandise?
Yeah and more often than not you don’t even get a doll, it’s mostly accessories that probably cost a dollar to make.
Load More Replies...This isn't really "unnecessary packaging" per se (not like the Amazon boxes) -- it's very-intended merchandising, to ensure the packaging for these tiny items takes up enough visual space on the shelf to attract attention and purchasers.
Whoever posted this misses the point entirely of LOL toys. They are about the surprise. You are paying for the packaging. It's the unwrapping part that sells, not the toy. Look up "surprise toys" on YouTube. My daughter begs me at least twice a day to watch surprise toys videos and to buy them at the store.
It's the point of the toy. Kids get excited unwrapping all of that c**p. Not saying it's good, but that's what it was designed for.
yup, not saying it's good either, but that's how they make the toy look appealing.
Load More Replies...Do not buy it! Complain about the excessive packaging and there will be change coming. Not immediately, but when the producer has heard it enough times.
Gas Station Packaging For One Dose
Those packages are bigger so companies can print first glance required information on them. Such as Allergies, drug facts, ingredients, what to do when you get a reaction. Dosage information. and probably more stuff.
I thought I had a hair on my screen, but it was your profile picture hahah
Load More Replies...Also a merchandising technique -- a larger packet = more visual space plus the illusion of being more worth the price.
The annoyance and frustration from the packaging is how they make the medication non-drowsy

Load More Replies...The staff who packed these items may now be found in various institutions, staring mindlessly at the nearest wall.
I can understand the thread protector, but not packing them all individually.
Because tiny things need big packaging so they don't get lost, as easier to count, etc. And the thread protector is there to protect the threads. It could be a major problem is the threads are damaged and don't work properly. Unfortunately, this is probably necessary. Can't have tiny things falling all over the place in a shop or factory environment.
Well yeah, but then sell them by the 10s or something at least!
Load More Replies...As a media blaster lots of company's just send this along to my job where I have to unpack all of it to do each piece. I always send things back out the way they come so I don't have to deal with trash or customers saying it wasn't protected. If the companies unpacked that before sending to me it make my life easier and their bills less because I have to count the unpack an repack time into the job. That's at least an hour and half when it could be a ten min job for me. Also you can just send the packing back to original companies to reuse or dispose of. "Screw" it.
That means that customers can fill their own containers with a whole range of Waitrose products, such as rice, cleaning materials, wine, beer, etc. from various dispensers. This not only helps the environment but is good for your wallet as well because product prices drop by around a seventh as a result. Of course, this means that we won’t get to build any forts with all the unnecessary packaging. But some sacrifices must be made for the greater good.

Well ... there are a ton of different varieties of tea. Let's say there's one that's your favourite, and you don't find it at a local store ... Also, if you're serious about tea, you sure as heck aren't going to find the good stuff at your local grocery store/market. You may not have a good tea shop in your town. You may want to order the best tea you can get from someone who sources their tea from China or India or New Zealand. (Yes, New Zealand has a tea plantation, and their tea is fabulous -- and since I don't live in NZ I can only order it online.) So -- people who LOVE TEA often have to order it online. Why are you shaming people for doing so?

I think that the unnecessary packaging is the line person's way of 'sticking it to the man'
“By utilizing reusable bottles, bags, or containers, we can start to build the systems that we want to see from large companies. Ultimately, large-scale systemic change will depend on companies like Nestle, Coca-Cola, and PepsiCo changing their business models to reject throwaway plastic packaging. By rejecting throwaway culture, we can move them in a better direction quickly,” Forbes said, adding that those readers who want to learn more can read Greenpeace’s reports here and here.
Amazon, I Don't Think The Box Was Big Enough

that's because these are small samples for trialling, after which normal doses are usually prescribed. This is supposed to be given to several people, obviously. Are they not supposed to include secure packaging and information about the drug?
This should go into another post about how the health insurance industry is corrupt and broken.
the health industry in general. If pharma companies could force the drugs directly into your mouth with a happy face and charge you $40, 000 for one pill ,they would. That's why regulation is important.
Load More Replies...Not very avoidable with free samples -- you have to have the explanatory information, which requires a box. It's probably not worth making smaller bottles just for samples.
Because they are samples, each one needs to be sealed, properly labeled, and include all of the necessary information. It doesn't matter if each bottle has one pill or 30, same rules apply. Curious though, how 9 bottles equals 15 days of pills?
I assumed each bottle was 15 days, but I guess that wouldn't be all that wasteful. Maybe they need to take multiple pills a day? e.g. if they were taking 3 pills per day and there were 5 pills in each bottle, then they'd need 45 pills every 15 days and that would require 9 bottles.
Load More Replies...Those instruction list are important. Some people are fool enough to not to listen to doc abt how to administer medicine or may b doc doesn't tell properly. Some people might get some sort of allergic reaction. Knowledge of Composition is needed at that time.
Bored Panda also talked to Kara Pochiro of the Association of Plastic Recyclers about the topic. According to Pochiro, “packaging often has a variety of uses that the general consumer does not realize such as protection and preservation.”
“If consumers purchase products and packaging made with recycled content, this will encourage companies to use more recycled content, can boost demand for that material, and increase recycling rates,” Pochiro explained, suggesting that customers recycle and conserve to help the environment. “Consumers play a big role in the success of recycling programs. They need to recycle and buy products and packaging made with recycled content.”
Back in 2018, more than 40 British companies, including the UK’s largest supermarkets, Coca-Cola, Nestle, Procter & Gamble, and others, vowed to cut plastic use within 7 years.
Reuters notes that these companies promised to eliminate unnecessary single-use plastic packaging in the UK by 2025. There’s still a long way to go until then (unless you’re reading this in 2025, in which case, hello, future Pandas!) and this is just one country. But it’s a strong start.
Ordered A Bulk Order On Amazon From A Single Seller. They Sent Each Item In Their Own Individual Envelope With Their Own Individual Tracking Number - 50 Items In 50 Envelopes
wow that's crazy for more than the excessive packaging part . I wonder how many items were lost in the mail out of 50 i
They probably pre-packed them so all they would have to do is just label it and send it on it's way. Rather than unpack them, it was probably just easier to just ship them like this.
Good point... but surely cost way more to ship that way??
Load More Replies...That actually is a result of the mandatory requirement for proper shipping tracking. Places like Wish or Amazon will not allow you to enter the same tracking number for all of the products going to the same place, or you get fined for each item that doesn't have it's own number. This is wrong, as it costs the seller much more in packaging and shipping, but it is the only way the seller can still make a profit. At least until they allow you to pool the shipments into one, like products from the amazon warehouses are (meaning, Amazon can do it, but vendors who ship from their business' instead of send them to amazon first and pay the associated dues are not allowed to pool them)
Wish does pool its shipments. At least on my orders, I get one shipping number for a bunch of stuff, and yep even different vendors.
Load More Replies...I think they just wanted to make sure that it was really 50 items but if they are an honest seller they could at least pack all 50 in one package so there would be 49 pack saved. face palmed.
I once made the mistake of ordering 24 eye shadows from Wish. They didn't have an option to order them as a set, and there's no way to contact sellers directly, so I had to hope that they'd figure it out...they didn't. They were all shipped individually in flimsy plastic envelopes with no tracking, never received 4 of them and 3 were destroyed. Wasn't super expensive over all, but the inconvenience etc. is not worth the "low" price. That was my last Wish order.
It seems like that would be more expensive for the shipper. I wonder if it was an expensive product and the seller had bad experiences with people claiming that they didn't get the right amount of items in the box (e.g., claiming they just got 30 instead of 50) so the seller sent each in its own package to verify each was sent and received.
I Picked Up Three Months Worth Of Anxiety Medication
Each lot of 28 tablets came in it’s own little tub which came in an individual box each with a set of instructions. I emptied all the separate tubs into one tub and it’s not even full.
I do the same with melatonin. I can pour 3-4 bottles together and they each have 120 pills. It's crazy that waste. Some meds I use, I need to poke every pill out of the sheet, since the ones in bottles cost about 18 dollar more, in our currency. More waste, lower price
Could a pharmacy provide us a smaller simpler reusable bottle that when you return or need a lot of the same medicine you can just refill that bottle, tube or ziplock back to your doctor or pharmacy so that there would be less packaging to be used?
I'm not sure everybody needs to take anxiety medicine 3 times a day. Those are likely meant 1 a day so each container is 28 days/almost a month. That's 9 containers for 9 months if they took a dose the manufacturer packages for.
It depends, I used to have to take 2 and a half tablets a day but that was to get the required dose I needed coz just the 1 tablet didn't come in the milligrams I needed.

They have to do RnD while keeping in mind challenges like the visual appeal of product packaging, the durability of alternatives, sustained supply of alternatives, costing and manufacturing.”
According to Almack, customers are a ‘force’ that can bring about change in the market. “It is important for customers to purchase and use products made by businesses that focus on sustainability. When people start buying from eco-friendly businesses, the demand for such good would increase and ignite other players to cater to this trend which could be done by a simple change in current company policies.”
He continued: “Being more conscious about our throwaway culture is where one should surely start. Simple changes to eliminate single-use plastic go a long way: avoid gum and plasticware, reuse storage containers and use razors with replaceable blades.”

The thing that annoys me the most about this kind of packaging is that it isn’t recyclable, unless you rip the plastic away from the paper! It’s very tedious and time consuming! I’ve tried, because I’m kind of a**l about recycling.
Furthermore, Bored Panda interviewed a spokesperson from the Alliance to End Plastic Waste: “Everyone agrees: plastic waste does not belong in our oceans, or anywhere in the environment. And despite the many benefits of plastic to health, safety, sustainability and convenience, plastic waste has become a challenge in parts of the world because it is not managed properly.”
The spokesperson went on to say that “to help address the challenge in a globally coordinated and transformative way, over 40 companies around the world, from across the plastics value chain – companies that make, use, sell, process, collect and recycle plastics – have joined together with a clear mission: to help end plastic waste in the environment.”
They continued: “The Alliance to End Plastic Waste has pledged 1.5 billion dollars over the next five years to develop, accelerate and bring to scale solutions to minimize and manage plastic waste, catalyze investment, engage communities and promote solutions including reducing, reusing, recovering, and recycling materials. Alliance efforts will be implemented in a coordinated way with support and resources from both the public and private sectors, facilitating comprehensive, meaningful and lasting change that will help end plastic waste in the environment.”
Sephora At It Again For A .05oz Concealer
I don’t give amazon or Sephora a pass on this but for very small sellers it’s too big a expense to purchase multiple sizes of box even though it’s technically payed off by shipping fees. You don’t make a profit off of them and you can’t afford very high costs at one time. Big companies should be able to afford the initial costs and to make it eco friendly but ironically the small sellers tend to be better, I truly don’t get that.

Why are you buying plastic straws in the first place? Confused. Maybe I’m missing something.
some people and I mean SOME can only drink using a plastic straw due to certain disabilities with mobility restrictions etc. They can hurt and damage their teeth on metal straws or impale themselves if they can't control their movements, the paper ones can get chewed on, get soggy and they are just too flimsy etc. The plastic ones bend easy so for people with things like cerebral palsy can drink easily and safer than other alternatives. In saying all that for all we know this person doesn't care and just wants plastic straws.

Do y'all remember when Trump was miffed when people chided him for using a plastic straw? Trump saw a money making project as well as a way to screw the chiders: He had plastic straws with "TRUMP"printed on each one. They were popular for a while---I imagine his fans might have bought some.
Also before you ordered..... didn't you read the product description? The packaging clearly says INDIVIDUALLY WRAPPED straws soooo......
So you wanted less plastic, but you bought plastic straws? Makes no sense.

Yeah that works except you check a stores website to see if they have a product and they do, but not in the store, you have to order it online. That happens way more often than necessary, and generally that same item can be found cheaper on Amazon, so blame the retailers not the customers.

Well. A smaller box more of the size of the tube would probably bend. This is a product that really should not be delivered separately and just bought in a store. Small items van be shipped in envelopes and there is a lot of waste because it's too protected. But in this case, the product is just not suited for transport like this.
Did You Honestly Send Me Two Dog Toothbrushes And Paste In This Huge Box, Surrounded With Plastic Bubble Wrap?
Pills That Come In Packaging Like This
Why people unwrap their meds? It's not hygienic, and most importantly the pills may be affected by light and oxygen now, and you lost information on its expiration date.
This is a common med to take daily, so they’ll be finished long before its expiration date. Personally, I’m disabled and on a bad day, I can’t open that kind of packaging. On a good day, it hurts. For things that only come packed like that, I have my husband put them in cleaned old prescription bottles, because those I can pretty reliably get into on my own.
Load More Replies...I dont have problem with meds... of course the yare small, of course they will be packed in plate, of couse that plate must be in box... The producer have his specific amout in each package, so If you ordered more tablets, it will come in theese boxes because, there is no other option, because the manufacturer will not get his pills and put them in one big box and send them, because he dont offer this option. Its something like, syrup for cough... They usualy are selling in 250ml bottle. But If I decided I need 2 litres of that syrup, then, if they not selling 2l canister, I will get 8 bottles with 250ml.
Those are the over the counter boxes sold at Walmart and other grocery stores and pharmacies, not prescriptions. Unfortunately, they ONLY come like that and most insurances here in the states refuse to cover the prescription version because you can get it OTC, despite the fact they aren't the exact same drug
Load More Replies...Packing is a safety measure in case of some medicine. If you want to overdose and harm yourself at least you have to take the time to individually take the pills from the packing. During this time the person might reconsider their actions and not do it. If all pills are in a single bottle it takes just a couple of seconds to swallow a fistful and overdose.
That particular one is for acid reflux and hard to overdose, to begin with. There needs to be a happy medium ground somewhere for less packaging and easier to open for disabled but still give the possibility of reconsidering overdose or someone finding the person and intervening
Load More Replies...Some pills are in those bubbles for a reason, such as oxygen reacting with something in it causing the pill to lose the effective portion over time. Or maybe humidity. Or to make it identifiable if you go through the airport with, as you have here, heartburn medication. This way it does not get confiscated.
Why did you do that to your medication? It could be entirely unusable now due to air contact!
That particular one isn't. It's Prilosec, for acid reflux, air contact doesn't harm it, but yes I get your point, I'm a former pharmacy tech. It's hard to find a happy medium ground between so much extra unnecessary trash packaging and ease for disabled and keeping medications properly

Yeah.. you bought it for convenience.. Or.. you know.. make your own at home in reusable containers..
Right on. This is what I do. Easy to prep the night before. There's also reusable dressing containers which do great. :)
Load More Replies...This one really burns me- Grocery shopping yesterday and it is just unconscionable the amount of unnecessary plastic everywhere. You can't get away with it no matter how you try :(
This isn't excessive when you consider that it was purchased for ease of use and being rapidly available, while still able to travel with it. Meaning...everything is wrapped up to prevent it from going "mushy" as fast, and maintain a clean food environment. In this case you paid for it to actually be wrapped like this. Not a small screw shipped in a box that could hold a car.
Maybe this person was out where they didn't get expect to be and they needed food. Maybe they had allergies that prevented them from getting other items on the menu. Stop judging so quickly, this could very well happen to me as I have a lot of digestive issues, that doesn't mean I would feel good about all that plastic.
We Ordered Baby Food Packages. They Normally Come In Boxes But This Time We Got 40 Individually Wrapped Containers
Buying your baby food from Target is your first problem. I'm almost three kids in (next one due in a few months) and I can tell you Target has terrible pricing on baby food. Even combining 10% back with manufacturers coupons it still is the highest price.
EVERYTHING is expensive at Target. They are so bougie now. I can't stand it.

You know, you can always go to Wal-Mart, wait, no I don't blame you on this one

Packaging For A Card Holder I Got As A Gift
Most is recyclable and reused those boxes, bags and tissue! Saves $$$
Hey mate, they were concerned for the packaging (noted in title and thread's theme). No beef towards the nice gift.

One new shirt for work. It came in a plastic bag. Note it said wrinkle free and the no ironing symbol on the label but on the bag it tells you to steam iron. Three plastic labels, five pins and a paper label held on with a small plastic loop. The collar had a cardboard insert and a plastic ring ( telling me not to iron it again ) plus the small strip of plastic hooked over the top button. Inside the folded shirt was two pieces of tissue paper and this sheet of plastic. I do not know why it was there. It was the only item with a recyclable symbol on it. I forgot to mention that this piece of cardboard was inside the folded shirt too. That was from one shirt this is from three. To much unnecessary packaging and most of it not recyclable. The word has to get out to these companies that we do not need all this packaging to make the item look nice. It dose not protect the shirt (very wrinkled and full of pin holes) from damage, except for the outer bag which could have been made from a biodegradable plastic.
All my shirts came like this and usually had more pins. I don't see this as excessive packaging. It's necessary to keep the shirt in good condition.
This is the standard. I admit that maybe some pieces could be removed at the cost of the appearance and not really affect the quality, but it doe affect sales. At most, maybe use a biodegradable plastic instead.
Load More Replies...This isn't excessive. The tags are to label the shirt for sale with a barcode so it can be scanned. The cardboard for the collar and fold board are so the shirt can retain it's shape. The tissue paper helps prevent wrinkles, and the outer plastic protects the fabric from stains.
This is reegular shirt packaging - it's all recyclable except the pins, which are reusable.
this is more reasonable as you dont want your shirt to be creased etc.
Or you could just buy a perfectly decent shirt off a hanger at a place like Walmart or Target and save money and packaging.
But when you buy something you wash it anyway before you wear it.

All the reasons of availability/brand aside it still takes trucks to bring that s**t into the local stores...you still have to drive round trip... Also nothing stops the local stores from creating a online store to streamline purchases. Not to mention the amazing customer service/return policy Amazon offers...hell they will even extend the warranty of items they sell to 90days. My mother bought a couch that had a defect and when i contacted the seller they said it was over 30 days so no warranty, kicked it to Amazon and got a email the next day saying they would refund or replace. Its hard to see how a local store could compete. Also Walmart put more mom and pop stores out of business than any other chain but i dont see the hate for people shopping there.
I have a problem when someone orders 2 packs of tea or one pack of button batteries... those things are available everywhere, are small and affordable. If you have a disability, fine. But I bet most of those posts are from lazy people.

JUst a thought: It is the shopper's fault that companies keep on using excess packaging if they keep ordering from them. Write negative reviews on those webshops.

My theory is there is ridiculous circumstances that encouraged the businesses in this post to use large boxes. It's the only explanation I can imagine.

Reason being that they wouldn't go through the machine that wraps them in plastic bands. Also the invoices would not even fit on the package What I do is fold the flaps of the box over to create a small space in the middle, then use a bit of wrapping foil as protection. We also have bubble-lined bags but they are only available until a certain time before they have to be ready for delivery. Also when ordering as a private buyer you would never get one of those because of insurance reasons. The mailman would just toss it into the mailbox without any signature proving that you actually got your stuff
I'm sure many of these products can be special orders directly from physical shops. It should not be a problem to find similar products that can be purchased directly from shops. We should all consider what we by online. Its shipped from the other side of the world and has a huge carbon emission.
Well I worked in shipping before, packing stuff. And yes it was policy to put in lots and lots and even more packaging for two simple reasons: 1 the companies processing and delivering packages don’t handle things with care, not one bit, I’d say even the opposite and 2 a lot of customers are unbelievably fuzzy and will demand refunding/ resending if just the direct packaging of the product has a dent or something even though the product itself is in perfect condition. So companies just want to make extra sure so they don’t have more work afterwards...
