People Who Used To Be “Ugly Ducklings” Share Their Transformations, And We Can Barely Recognize Them
Growing up can be incredibly awkward. Our bodies are still developing. We’re covered in spots. And our fashion sense might just match our bad posture. Sometimes, looking awkward doesn’t automatically stop with our teenage years (my collection of baggy sweaters says ‘hi’) and can continue into our twenties and thirties, too.
However, some people have changed incredibly over the years, starting out as ‘ugly ducklings’ and turning into beautiful swans that barely anyone can recognize anymore. One of the places where they share their inspirational before-and-afters is the ‘Ugly Duckling’ subreddit. As you’re checking out these awesome transformations, remember to upvote your favorite ones, dear Pandas. When you’re done, have a look through Bored Panda’s earlier lists about the subreddit right here and here.
We all know that being a good person is more important than having the perfect looks. However, if given the chance, a lot of people would choose both. And there’s nothing wrong with wanting to look how you feel inside.

From About 11ish(?) To 25. My Skin Cleared Up, I Got Braces, Learned How To Make Up And Fill In My Eyebrows. I Was Made Fun Of/Very Lonely Growing Up, And I Feel The Way That I Looked Had A Big Impact On Why I Am The Way That I Am Now. “Be Kind”
I completely empathize. I was covered in pimples too, including a giant one on my cheek bone for the graduation photo in my yearbook. Luckily I too cleared up and learned to take care of my skin, my face. Very happy for her.
What cleared up your acne? I'm having problems now at 20 :(
Load More Replies...Kindness is the most beautiful trait in any human!
Load More Replies...So did you get the classic tv moment where some jerk who made you miserable before asked you out and you got to tell him when pigs fly? You and pupper are both adorable.
I had this exact experience. It was one of the greatest moments of my life. He didn't ask me out, but he was so flabbergasted when he saw me and realized who I was that he literally lost the ability to speak, flubbed his speech, turned beet red then snort-laughed. I almost felt sorry for him. Almost.
Load More Replies...You look very beautiful also I love your hair colour and ear shape (like elf ears!)
(those are fake ears, you can see her real ones in another picture) but otherwise i totally agree!
Load More Replies...I would think this is what Anna from Frozen would look like in real life
Awesome that you see the big picture and the contribution of cruelty benefitting you and others in the end. Many of us are in that same boat: Bullied and teased as children/youth. It's caused me to immediately empathize with those less fortunate or being harassed. In turn, I am a kinder, gentler soul to others. And I have since taught my children and grandchildren (none have struggled in similar fashion) to do the same. We heed THE GOLDEN RULE every day!
16-19 Or: How I Learned To Start Shaving And Escape The Neckbeard
I would not have realized that this was the same person. He now also has a haircut that suits him.
Great transformation! I hate beards unless they're short and trimmed properly. I have never understood neckbeards - does anyone actually think they look good?
I absolutely positively totally agree with you!
Load More Replies...I would say far more than just "i learned to shave". Hair cut, shave, and contact lens.
Beard doesn't look good on young men. Aby beard "style". Never. Ever. By young in this case I mean under 60. Sorry.
Last two also avoid photographing his nascent potbelly which first two have --- changes perception two.
Age 14 To 19. Lost Some Weight And Gained Some Confidence Along The Way
The teen years are often "brutal." You grew into your beautiful self
The ‘Ugly Duckling’ subreddit is a community of over 116k ‘enthusiasts’ who “turned into butterflies” over the years. The subreddit celebrates late bloomers, positive personal changes, and motivational transformations.
Being a late bloomer is nothing to be ashamed of. It can happen at any time. And the process can be drawn out or happen nearly overnight, just like with Neville Longbottom’s actor Matthew Lewis who ‘Longbottomed’ and caught a lot of us unaware of what just happened.
Scott Barry Kaufman writes on Psychology Today that a lot of human traits (including physical attractiveness) are under genetic control and can take “decades” to emerge.
16-20. Does This Count?
12 - 24 Even My Family Doesn't Recognize Me These Days, It's Nice
That’s a defense mechanism, when you figure purposely mucking up your photo is better than being made fun of for how you look.
Load More Replies...Wow! You are gorgeous! Sometimes, our teen years are so awkward (mine were). We often just need someone to show us how to bring out the best in our appearance.
Life Begins At 40! 25 --> 40
@JustAWeirdoGirlChild Just because someone is skeleton skinny does not necessarily mean that person has an eating disorder & if they did that is a disease too! Did you ever stop & think that a person may not have had any choice in becoming skeleton skinny, unfortunately thier are millions of people who get sick from lots of incurable diseases! I know by experience, at 27 I was diagnosed with an incurable kidney disease! By the time I was 32 on kidney dialysis became completely bed ridden while on dialysis for 6 year's, my body was deterating fast, then my bitter sweet prayer's were answered a perfect kidney transplant match, my weigh in on that day i was a 88lb skeleton! Anyway's I hope you will not jump to conclusions, the next time that you see & or meet a person that looks like a skeleton you will be a little kinder & have some more compassion for other's!!
Love this because I grew up "too skinny", but could some how out eat my uncles 20 years older than me. Now I'm 40 and finally reached the "just right" weight.... but can still out eat all the men in my life 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Load More Replies...I think you resemble the very attractive actor Julie Bowen, who played Claire, among her many roles.
Don't downvote this dude, it makes sense. Besides, it's just a joke.
Load More Replies...“There is one way of becoming an early bloomer, but there are an infinite number of ways of being a late bloomer. Also, the more complex a trait, the more ways that a child can become a late bloomer for that trait. This means that the most appreciated abilities in society, such as creativity and leadership will rarely fully present itself at a young age, all at once,” Kaufman explains.
He adds that even though society tends to celebrate child prodigies, being an early bloomer is no guarantee that you will continue to be successful. Dedication, hard work, and moving towards your goals step by step are just as (if not even more) important as talent.
13 - 25
Not an ugly duckling situation, just lost some weight. Like how happy you look!
you look much happier now, that's the main difference and all that really matters. good for you!
Left-13, Right-34
Are these real prescription glasses or just an accessory? I've never seen one like this ...
I can't figure out if she's wearing glasses or swim goggles in the first picture. My kids picked out the absolute worst looking glasses at that age. But they like what they like. Gotta let them find their own style. She certainly did.
The first one is just an awful picture. I am sure you could still recreate that look.
No look at the neck. She has lost some weight.
Load More Replies...Damn, life must have been hard for her as a kid. Children can be very cruel. 😔 You look awesome now, take care! ❤️
Freckles? Nose job? Eye shape? Hairline? Gotta downvote, as I need more proof this is the same person
Age 17-24, Was Bullied A Lot Growing Up
I just saw a guy in a t-shirt a few minutes ago on Haight St. that said "BE KIND FIRST"
Load More Replies...I think this one is a fake. Eyes don't change from brown to blue, and the noses and mouths are completely different as well.
Contacts can do that. As to skin color, tanning contributes to the difference and I’ve seen that in person
Load More Replies...They look like two different persons. Skin and eyes are much lighter. 🤔
Wow. Managed to change his eye colour and skin colour too! Pfft...sick of the fake photos/claims.
12 And 29. Still With The Short Hair And Glasses, Some Things Never Change
Totally cute awkward duckling . If you ask me , anyone who doesn't look awkward during 6th and 7th grade is some kind of alien.
I rarely comment on anything about people and their appearance, but I just have to tell you how gorgeous you are. Wow.
If it works --- and you can rock it like The Rolling Stones --- why change??
11 vs. 28, Lost That Baby Fat And Learned How To Smile
Left 12, Right 24
I am suspicious of this one. He is no ugly duckling at all and I wonder if he just joined in on this for the attention.
Load More Replies...Errr, you grew up? Some of these posts are just people wanted to share a photo of themselves to get told how good looking they are.
2015 - 2019. Basically, I Cleaned Myself Up And Started Over!
You look younger, did you age backwards. Glad you're doing so well now.
True happiness, satisfaction and loving yourself can take years off of your face.

Then: 320 Lbs, Face Always Red, Angry At Dad, Ready To Die For Punk Rock. Now: 250 Lbs, Skin Healthier, Love My Dad, Punk Rock Is Pretty Ok But Being An Adult Is Pretty Ok Too
My 13 year old HATED me. Now, 20, says I love you mom a hundred times a day. And that is worth every bit of what we went through.
You can be a functioning adult and still love punk as much as you did when you were a teen, I certainly do, so does my wife, we're both approaching 40.
13, 15, 20 And 27 Years Old
Looks interesting and happy in all pics. It's beautiful to see how style is changing, too.
I don’t know about how happy she is in the middle left though
Load More Replies...This series of pics tells a story... Like finding herself, questioning authority, questioning herself... Happy with the result.
Changes in style over the years, newest looks relaxed and confident. Nice going!
You looked like fun and a good friend...but damn girl, you are stunning now!
(Spoiler Alert) I Didn't Peak In Highschool Lol
Age 12 To Age 26... Still Feel A Lot Like The Kid On The Left
This isn't an ugly duckling at all. You always looked good, just maybe a change in confidence.
I love these photos! Mainly because your smile, in both photos, is sooo GENUINE appearing! I see a good, genuine person behind your facial expressions. I see a thoughtful, good, caring person, who seems generous & giving, and also a happy guy, etc.. BUT....i do also see, behind your gorgeous eyes, a thoughtful, interesting person, but perhaps someone who has some deeper hurt (just maybe). The hurt may not be recent, but i'm betting i am definitely seeing hurt, and i think it is quite heartfelt.... But, meanwhile....Thnx soo much, for being brave enough to share your personal photos! You are INDEED a handsome young guy!! No doubt! (It makes me wish i were a couple of decades younger!!!) Haha! Take care of yourself, and i wish you ALL the VERY BEST in your life!!!!
11—>30 Braces Were Good To Me
If you are 30 you were likely born in 1990 which means the 11 year old you was rocking that mental Barnett in 2001 where there was absolutely no excuse.
That's what I was thinking, she doesn't look that old, too young to have been that age in the time that the haircut was acceptable lol
Load More Replies...I didn’t have to wear them, was always glad, but they were good to you😎
19 To 20. I Would Like To Thank My Dermatologist
Acne changes a personality, and sometimes it takes years to get over the trauma. So its wonderful that those blue eyes shine, and that beautiful face is glowing. Thanks for sharing.
acne is hard for anyone, at any age. But it can be harder on a female. I am so happy for you that you found someone to help you. You are glowing!! You were still pretty, even with the acne.
Thankfully you had, a good specialist , looking fabulous, girl !!!

17-24, Went Through Horrible Cystic Acne, Lost 50 Lbs, Got Braces, And Dropped An Emotionally Abusive Boyfriend
No, she says she was with someone who made her feel badly about her self worth. And she believed him. Sometimes it happens slowly and you don't know you're being abused until its too late. She got self confidence once she was out of the relationship and then worked on herself. Total respect.
Well said. It would help if the justice system would evolve to a place that women can be safe in leaving an abusive relationship. Knowing that he would probably just shoot me through the restraining order kept me trapped. I'm glad that she, too, found freedom and happiness.
Load More Replies...She looks the same, but one is a far better photo probably taken by a professional.
4 Years Later (16-20)
It's possible, but likely the first camera had a wide lens that distorted his face. Otherwise he has the same mark on his neck.
Load More Replies...I think it is the same person, the angles and the fact one was shot with a selfie camera are throwing you off. I think...
google search found this image - from another angle it's a lot more visible. Seems like the same guy comparison...dc3611.jpg

Don't you wish when you were younger that you had a clue how you'd turn out? Beautiful.

Mother’s Day With My Momma 2014-2018

Not really an ugly duckling transformation as you were never ugly.
So.... you grew your hair and took off your glasses. Otherwise just the same!
From 17 To 18, I Don't Even Know
It's not "guyliner". It's eyeliner. It lines the eye not the guy, just like it does on women. We don't call it "girl-liner", do we? Guyliner is more like what you'd find marking the position of the body at a crime scene.
Load More Replies...It's now easier to see that beautiful eyes you have. Congrats on the weight loss as well.
Always Felt So Geeky In High School. I Even Went Through A Period Where I Wanted To End My Life In Middle School Because Of My Weight And Look. Now I’m In My 30’s And Feeling The Most Confident I’ve Been In My Life. Big Thanks For Braces And Lasik
I have a daughter who had the same issue in middle school, mostly because she is transgender. We spent a lot of time with me saying "I PROMISE, it will get better. Hang in there with me". I lived (and still do, sometimes) in fear that she'd kill herself. She's better now that she's out. I just wish she had done it sooner.
You’re are gorgeous with your light radiant from within. I bet you brighten the days of many, frequently
So glad you are still with us, and the world! What a beautiful smile as well. Lites up a room!
You are good-looking in both photos. It is amazing how our own self-image can hold us back or propel us forward.
You have the warmest eyes and the best smile. You look like someone I'd like to have in my life.
16 vs. 46. Took Awhile To Get Here, Lol.
13-21 Puberty Really Hit Me Hard And Shot Me Up To 6ft8
He was in the sun, (it was either Spring or Summer) and he got a tan; perfectly normal. My skin does the same thing; I tan in the Spring and Summer and lose a bit of color in the Fall & Winter. If you're going to comment on someone's color, at least learn about things like that or were you being obtuse?
I'm still pig-ugly, but I was 4'1" at 16 and got to 6'0" by 18. Hell on earth and, bizarrely, I still have a self image that I'm short. I only appreciate my height when I see pictures of me standing next to others.
From 18 To 23. A Completely Different Person Now
7 Years Can Make A Crazy Difference
I agree. Most people look a little weird at some point during puberty. You literally have to grow into your body.

Dude I keep saying this to like everyone. And some people really pull it off but Thomas square glasses on the left. It’s not a good look
Found An Old School Photo (14/29)
Beautiful in the old photo! And very nice natural hair colour, if I had it, I'd keep it forever.
I have identical twins, now 20, their hair is still about the color in the first picture. A bit darker, but when the sun hits it, it's magnificient.
Load More Replies...I hope you mean the lindsay lohan before drugs... Very beautiful.

12 vs. 20. Had To Stop Riding The Bus+change My Classes In Middle School Because I Was Bullied So Bad For "Being Ugly"
I agree. You were never ugly. You were an absolutely cute child and now a beautiful woman!!! Hugs
Load More Replies...Poor girl. There's absolutely nothing wrong with her. Kids can be assholes.
Her school was terrible. Kids aren't automatically assholes. Their elders teach them that and then let them get away with doing it.
Load More Replies...Wow! This just makes me feel so sad! I can't stand bullying in any way but when it gets to THAT point - not riding the school bus and having to change classes! That's just wrong! I'd love to see your tormentors faces now! Arseholes! Why can't all parents instil decency in their kids so that, hopefully, they won't become bullies!
Wow that's so mean. They were wrong then. You looked pretty and look amazing now :)
3 Years With A Lot Of Time In The Gym And Taking Care Of My Skin

I don't like the word "ugly" in this context at all. These people were never ugly. Some of them were somewhat overweight, some had acne (didn't we all, at some point?), some had glasses and now have contacts, some just learned to use make up and fixed hairstyle... Are overweight people, people with freckles and people with glasses ugly? Are we automatically beautiful if we put ton of make up or lose like 10 lbs? While I think people absolutely should make changes on their appearance if it makes them feel good, I simply don't how this was put.
I never got over the bullying as I was an ugly kid. Bad clothes, bad haircut, acne. Even now that I've changed I still have confidence issues. Don't bully, people. It can affect someone their entire life. I'm 62 now.
Same. Even a teacher commented that I was awfully ugly. I'm told that I am now quite good-looking, even model good-looking, but I look in the mirror and I don't see that at all. All is see is the child everyone called ugly looking back at me.
Load More Replies...I was an ugly duckling growing up. I was bullied for having a big nose. I was called so many different names from Pinnochio to Big Bird. I had numerous people make comments like “if you didn’t have a big nose u would be so pretty” or “I would date her if she didn’t have a big nose.” It was all throughout my childhood and partially into adulthood. I had very low self esteem. I had depression. I had no confidence. I saved up money from age 16 to 24 to get my nose and chin done. And it changed everything for me. It raised my confidence and self esteem tremendously. I’m finally happy with how I look. I’m 28 now btw.
I was at a bar one night and a guy I went to high school with came up to me and said, "Hi." I had hair down to waist. He said, "Wow! You remind me if that fairy tale...I can't think of it." I said, "Rapunzle?" He said, "No. The Ugly Duckling! You were so ugly in high school but you are HOT now!" I almost punched him. I told the bartender he was taking care of my bill and I ordered the most expensive drinks I could think of. Top shelf all the way!
I just hate how people who weren't ugly posted. Being overweight or having a bad haircut doesn't make you ugly. I don't get some of these.
Most of these before pictures are of 12 year olds! They're not trying to be sexy. Their parents are still buying their clothes. They could care less about fashion or attracting a mate. I work at a school for kids aged 12-18. They always start out awkward and stocky and then they hit growth spurts and puberty and then they start thinking about girlfriends and boyfriends and clothes, change their hairstyle, etc. And the ones who come back and visit after graduating and heading to college have gone even further in defining their image and self. It's great and I'm happy for them. But please don't call a 12 or 14 year old ugly, nobody peaks at 12, they're kids, they're not even aware of the mountain to summit.
I saw some of my childhood photos and realized I peaked at 5. I was so damn adorable in them overalls holding my "My Little Ponies" birthday gifts. I am still attractive, but I will never reach that level of cuteness again. My husband was an 'ugly duckling' growing up. Then he hit 17 and suddenly women were interested and he thought they were just messing with him. Took him years to feel confident. Kids may look a little awkward growing up but it doesn't make them ugly and it is important to teach them positive body image because it strongly impacts your confidence as an adult. Confident people are often more successful so let them grow into their own, teach them healthy habits, and do your best to make them feel comfortable in their own skin.
I also feel bad for people who post 'before' pics when they were 11 or 12. You weren't 'ugly', you were a CHILD.
I think the majority of people in this post felt like ugly ducklings because they weren't... just pre-pubescent. Do wish that people in general wouldn't feel under pressure to conform... the 'abs thing' really gets to me. Men without washboard abs are perfectly fine, as are women without sylph-like frames. (PS primary school and high school sucked for most "non-conformist" folks- kids are *rseholes).
I don't like the word "ugly" in this context at all. These people were never ugly.
