18-Year-Old Model Edits Her Instagram Posts To Reveal The Truth Behind The Photos
18-year-old Social media influencer Essena O’Neill has been making thousands of dollars modeling on Instagram and sharing her pictures with almost 580,000 followers, but all that has changed. The Australian deleted 2,000 photos from her account and changed the name to “Social media Is Not Real Life.” She has since re-captioned many of the remaining photos to reveal the “truth” behind them, and launched a new website, “Let’s Be Game Changers.”
“Without realizing, I’ve spent the majority of my teenage life succumbing to social media addiction, social approval, social status, and my physical appearance,” O’Neill wrote in an October 27th Instagram post. “Social media, especially how I used it, isn’t real. It’s a system based on social approval, likes, validation in views, success in followers. It’s perfectly orchestrated self-absorbed judgment.”
Essena bluntly talks about the negative effects of social media, encouraging young girls to view the pictures posted on Instagram as not real and staged. Her goal is to prove to people that life isn’t as portrayed on social media today but rather more straightforward and not so unrealistically glamorous.

She broke down and re-captioned her Instagram photos to reveal the truth behind her photos
She was spending 50+ hours per week curating her social media persona – “I was miserable. Stuck. Uninspired. Angry”
“I didn’t enjoy the act of creating art, writing or any forms of self expression like I once did as a child”
Last Tuesday, O’Neill deleted 2000 photos and changed her Instagram title to “Social Media Is Not Real Life,” encouraging others to unplug too

Load More Replies...I watched her video in which (near the end) she is begging for money to support her because she now has no income because she has stopped modelling. Well what did you expect? If you want to be able to pay your rent, here's an idea - GET A JOB like everyone else has to do if they want to get through life.
I think a large fear that she had was that she had spent so much of her life focused on making money through social media that she can't exist without it. She needs to start over and find a career, and get a job, but she has nowhere to start. I don't like the idea of asking the internet for money either, but I'm not going to condemn her for needing a little help to get started on a career path that won't make her miserable.
Load More Replies...really hope it isn't but it smells like a publicity stunt to me.. internet made me lose faith in even the faintest hope of anything being real.
I get you, it certainly feels so unreal most of the time. But maybe we should give this kind of acts a chance of being true. I see it as a girl who opened her eyes and in her unhappiness tried to change something, and tried to show people what she is trying so hard to change. Of course she probably hopes to get publicity, but this time in a good and changing way. From what she says, I feel like she already had that other kind of publicity at first, and really didn't enjoy it. Own opinion tho, I totally respect yours too ^ :)
Load More Replies...If she needs money she should go out and get a real job like the rest of us. How is she preaching against social media but still uses it to make money. She didn't change her life, she's still putting on costumes and doing what society dictates only now the costume is no make up fighter girl. Maybe she should follow her own advice and turn off her computer and phone and go do something with her life other than just talking about doing something with her life. Sorry not buying into this video.
What an interesting story. Now it's my turn. Once upon a time I didn't give a s**t. THE END
she's taking life too serious... You can be lonely even without social media. Not all people in the real life are willing to be real friends. Social media is not real life, but is a powerful tool. So don't blame it for your inability to use it wisely. But! I like her eager to search for the truth! Keep going and good luck!
Its the internet...she tried "pity me" for money and got slammed rightfully do for it that she had to delete her YT video. She's a skank

She says she is so empty and void of any good personality traits, yet continues to want money for free in the end. She most likely thought she was going to make money off posting her depressing thoughts . Time to go to college and train for a job.
Ok, it's sad, but she is only 19, it's not like she lost her entire life. Her life just begun. Just get a job if you want to change, don't beg for money. There are people out there who need that money more. I'm sure she has family to pay her rent.
She's right in many aspects but also pushing it too. It's fine to be transparent with your audience but stop crying at how much you hate it too. Not fair for the brands that pay you.
I only have 1 questions : How many people in the world can say they enjoy every single aspect of their job?
Oh so she was depressed, because the photo was the best thing on that day? A toned body isn't everything? She needed lots of make up for that pic? Her pictures didn't have enough purpose? Could she stop ranting please? Does she realize how many people on earth have it worse? She's pretty which makes life a lot easier these days and she doesn't seem poor either. Nobody forced her to promote those dresses and swin wear and it is no secret anyway that you can make lots of money with a pretty face on Instagram. Why didn't she show any pictures without make up? Or one where she looks miserable? I think with that campaign she only wants even more attention.

Perhaps I am cynical, but isn't this article another way of gathering more Instagram followers to cash in on these brand deals? At $2000 per post for an adult, let alone a pubescent kid of 16, $2,000 per post wouldn't be a terrible way to be 'miserable'. If it were me, I would hammer away at it 16 hours per day, make a fortune, and retire by 30! Make the most of it, kiddo! By the time you finish growing, marketers will be using kids who're currently 10-years-old. These gigs don't last forever.

Get a job, ON YOUR OWN, most all of us did. My parents didn't let me live at home forever, I left when I was 17 then bought my first car at 18 BY MYSELF. Paid my own rent, car loan, food, clothing, etc. Can no one do anything on their own any longer? And all of this was done without a college education, it can be done. I later went on to college on my own yet again and am now collecting my social security that I am proud to say I "earned."
I think it´s nonsense. It sounds like she is a poor girl, trying to change her life; but all the pics above just show another kind of person...
While at the same time a great message, it's also a great gimmick. Good for her on both counts!
I think, also, that this is a brilliant publicity stunt. She's received the mainstream medias' attention now. She is, probably, hoping for the next media ride. Such as a guest spot on Ellen D's program, with the host touting how smart and beautiful she is, all the while she is praying that E.D. Will connect her with a modeling agency, or some friend of hers in the media. It is assumption, on my part of course, but nothing is believable in this, "me, me, me," times. She may be telling the truth, who knows? That is the issue, isn't it?
I thought exactly the same. To me, she seems mostly honest – and mentally challenged. She needs therapy, as do her parents.

Everyone's some-ones whore... It does not matter what you do, in the end you need money. Me too! As long as you're okay with it I don't see a problem in that. If she would have been a smart one she should have saved some money by now so she should quit complaining. Some folks do modelling for a living. Vanitas vanitatum, omnia vanitas! ;-)
I'm glad she woke up at such a yoing age. The video wasn't available as she closed her account. Why does she need money? She should have been saving some but she needs to get a job. Or live with her parents and go to college. If she has been modeling get a job doing that. She has lots of options so not sure why she wants to be helped, You will only achieve success if you do it on your own.
Her Instagram account was no work to her, she reveled in it. She doesn't want to work. Thinks she deserves to not work after this "tragedy".

It is horrific. So honestly if you have a few extra bucks to spear find an organisation that is trying to help Syrian refugees. And to all parents out there worried about their children social media is not the enemy it is what values you teach to your children. No offence. The only key to happiness is well educated people. The problem is not the social media, but what people do with it. Of course if you're hungry for Likes, you'll do whatever it takes. And yes, you'll attract some attention, and you'll become a product. Then you will be aware of what you are doing when they will ask you to actually place some products. I'm surprised people are still suprised that it happens...
Educate girls about what? How to be a whore and make money without working for it? How to fake tears on camera so people send you money?!
Load More Replies...It takes courage to stake out a position of reality in a world addicted to commercializing fantasy. It also takes courage to support the real world by "coming clean." I admire her position.
So why doesn't she post photos of her 'real' self with acne or otherwise 'imperfect' features? It looks to me like she's saying cool stuff about it all, but not putting her face in the picture because she still wants to look pretty. (Unless there are pictures I've missed, and in that case I apologise).
Personally, I would be to use modeling as a path to a more fulfilling career. Find a way to streamline your process to reduce your burden.
50+ hours a week and all you come up with is a basic girl persona? That is the real tragedy.
You are 18 and you spent 50+ hours a week curating a persona and all you came up with is a basic girl? Its not like you are a surgeon or a firefighter or something, you are a girl, who wears clothes. What idiots follow such a boring gram?
It is sad that her "hard work" only amounts to this shallow persona. The real drama is how many people follow such empty shells online.

I support you, Essena! Thank you. Thank you for creating this video and calling this out. I have many friends who live such an "empty" life. Such maturity at 18 years of age. I respect you. Live a happy life!
Not everyone on social media feels like this :) Promoting the "Social media is ruining our lives"-motto is a bit too dramatic.
What puts me off the most is that she's begging for money. Who does she think she is, that she can't just get a job like everyone else who can't live off their looks? She already has it easier finding a job just by being pretty, she could easily learn something like hotel receptionist, but instead she hopes people will feed her through life, because she's a "poor" Instagram model who got paid lots of money only for posting pics in a couple of dresses what other girls daily do anyway and for free. Tough life yeah.. With that attitude I have zero sympathy for that girl. And I'm sure the only thing she wants to achieve with this "noble" revelation is just getting more famous and more donations.
Forgot to say that I would be ashamed begging for money, when I'm a young, healthy and pretty woman that could easily find a job if she wanted. There are millions of people in the world who could really use donations, because they're ill and can't pay for their medication or live in poverty and can barely survive. She's neither. I really hope people aren't so dumb and donate her money. She should get off her lazy a*s and get a job!

In the last few years being fit skinny and toned had become the biggest trends and now there are specific washing agents for sports clothes, you can find "100% organic" but somehow packeged foods in every supermarket. What im trying to say is everything has an hidden side
Please don't use the term schizophrenic when you don't know what it means.

Perhaps she's doing the right thing for her, but I've never known someone who didn't feel this way from 12 to 18. It's really not for me to decide, but I don't think she should do that until she's a little older.
There's an interesting debate here because as an artist - everything you do is about set up - you have an intention behind what you are presenting and so you have to work to achieve that whether it be for money or for meaning. I would suggest that all social media is just art or marketing and that most of us are aware of that because we know how many filters it takes to post a photo on facebook.. Of course, Essena's message of transparency is a pure one and hopefully it encourages more people to step away from the superficiality of life.
Thank you beautiful soul, keep on social media and keep the message of the truth going. Your message can help other young girls refocus their future. Big love and peace x
Someone needs to remind this girl that she's only 19. There's a lot of life left, honey! Just because you spent 6 years doing something, doesn't mean that's who you are and who you always will be. Approaching my 30th birthday next week, I wish I could just put my arm around this kid and say, "Girl, the world is your oyster. Get yourself a friend, a glass of wine, calm down, and reassess!" I'm not saying I have all the answers. On the contrary, I learn more every day about all there is left to learn. There needs to be a mentorship program between 30-somethings and late teens/early 20-somethings. Could we start that???
Oh so she was depressed, because the photo was the best thing on that day? A toned body isn't everything? She needed lots of make up for that pic? Could she stop ranting please? Addiction sucks. She was addicted to fame. I was addicted to WOW. WOW never made me any money though. I hope she can transfer real lessons learned in marketing and self promotion to her future successes because that is always necessary. I hope she can do it all from an infallible sense of self worth and humility.
Еvery person with a descent amount of stuff between the ears would have thought out these "secrets" the lady reveals. I don't really see a problem here, why would you feel bad for posing for instagram with a dress when you've paid to do so, let me tell you something - I think most people don't care at all, they are just visually pleased by the view. I do like beautiful cars, the fact those are expensive cannot change my delight with the thing. The same here - the girl is beautiful either wearing a paid clothing or not.
Just another human caught up in the b******t that is the internet PR of the daily person. All those facebook accounts. All those instagram posts are a perception people try to enlist on you, when, in fact, they are often alone, and scared, like everyone else. I call it the social b******t machine, and it's not stopping anytime soon.
what if it was cuz another company made a contract with her for her to make this video? shrug
What is she complaining about??? Lets hear from her again after 5 years of minimum wage jobs...
What is she complaining about??? Lets hear from her again after 5 years of minimum wage jobs.
Where were your parents when you were 12? My teen is annoyed, because I won't let her have a YouTube. .. Guess that means I'll be paying for her rent and education for a while longer... and if you made all this modelling $... where is it? How was none of it put aside and you "worked" and modeled for years and now you're broke. I don't get it
The irony of telling people this on social media. I want to believe her... the only thing that makes me cynical is the fact she's starting another website about non social media. Wont that be a money making biz for her too. Apart from that I think I do believe she is genuine by listening to her talk about it.
If someones self-worth or even identity comes only from his/her physical beauty / career / money/ etc, then I think I can understand the self-esteem issues. BUT... What's bad about promoting clothes - or anything for that matter? And what's bad about companies offering jobs in 3rd world countries? You get that if people are working there voluntarily, it might be their BEST option out of all other obtions available? And you get that if it's THAT profitable for companies to invest into undeveloped and possibly unstable 3rd world country, the workers conditions will get better over time due to competition? Too damn bad 99% of people - this young model included - is too economically illiterate to get those things right.
B******t, while people works 12hr a day with an advanced stage of pregnancy or a grave illness this idiot airhead earned money by taking photos resting her a*s at home, plus no one forced her to do it, just another attention w***e with 3rd world problems.
On one hand, she is right, in that she is showing naive people that modeling is not as glamorous as they might thing. On the other hand, she is taking it too far. Its not like working in a coal mine. She would have hit a better tone if she revealed it wasnt that glamorous but noted that it was obviously better than soul and body destroying low wage manual labor jobs or unemployment
Ok. Go work in a coal mine for a few months. I'm sure you'll discover making money as a social media celebrity isn't that bad after all.
she'll get an acting job...but I hope it's just innocent and she's really getting to know herself.
I know a few young people in my life that would benefit from this young woman's advice. I'm glad my life was never tied to numbers. My life is ok for right now, but at least I control it.
On my end, it's worth sharing with a couple young people in my life that need to be reminded of where their priorities are.
She just explains something everybody knows. If she was smart she would have realised that was a life choice in the first place. Now she doesn't want to keep going, she should just leave, but keeping her mouth shut.
Watched one of her new videos from the last few days, why does she keep saying that she 'won the genetic lottery'? Makes her sound like a bigheaded, narcissistic b***h. Didn't know her before today, but I still think she has a long way to go before becoming the good person that she's making out to be. And then asking for money? Yeah, I don't have any respect for her. Get a real job like the rest of the world, she's nothing more than a hypocrite.
You are not a doll, dolls break. You are not a product and you are not for sale. Eat what makes you happy, sleep if you feel tired, don't overexert your body because pretty isn't perfect. Find a view of what's pretty around you not what's pretty in a mirror.
You are not a doll, you are not a product and you are not for sale, just be yourself, eat what makes you happy, exercise when you have energy, otherwise you will burn out at a very young age, you become self obsessed and that's not pretty. Pretty isn't perfect, Perfect is not pretty..
So quit the whining about it and do something substantial with the money! There is nothing more annoying than someone who is fortunate complaining. You have gifts that you didn't earn (looks) and are fortunate. Rather than complaining about it, use it to achieve what you really want to achieve. Wasting a talent (gift) is a sin. Helping others understand the vanity industry is laudable, but everyone has a choice every day to choose their own values. You can be a porn actress, or a doctor, or a soldier. You can do anything. Many many people don't have those options. Be grateful, and happy. Life is not over at 19! Stop the self-pity. Just change courses. Mia Farrow did, lots of people have.
Well done sweetie , only wish my 16 year old Daughter could do the same :'( she is wasting her best years on Instagram and supposedly met a boy from America on it :'( I am at a loss as to what to do .

Load More Replies...ok i will not even express my thoughts on this so called game changers whatever thing. Everyone has their own opinion but please to all you who are potentially going to help this woman by giving money please just remember that at this very moment you are reading this there are real people drowning in the Mediterranean trying to escape from a war. It is horrific. So honestly if you have a few extra bucks to spear find an organisation that is trying to help Syrian refugees. And to all parents out there worried about their children social media is not the enemy it is what values you teach to your children. No offence. The only key to happiness is well educated people. (please exuce any grammar mistakes as English is not my native language) http://metro.co.uk/2015/09/03/refugeeswelcome-heres-how-you-can-help-those-affected-by-the-refugee-crisis-5374080/
Your suggestion to help Syrian refugees is pretty narrow. How about giving to Red Cross or simply anywhere living beings are in need?

well according to this girls is just a hoax , that this girl was a freeloader living in LA depending on others not really that successful or modeling brands as she said youtube.com/watch?v=WB3HtCMfZic

Load More Replies...I hope this aint just for views !! Social Media life is Intangible....and good to be in touch....at the most !!!
She's pretty which makes life a lot easier these days and she doesn't seem poor either. Nobody forced her to promote those dresses and swin wear and it is no secret anyway that you can make lots of money with a pretty face on Instagram. Why didn't she show any pictures without make up? Or one where she looks miserable? I think with that campaign she only wants even more attention.
What did you do when you were 16 that your parents hated?

I love the Young woman she is, I so hope that she can go live her life to the fullest as she wants to! I so respect her!
Nope, no Okay bye now for you, deal with it... she was a money grubbing whore before with her Instagram pics and when that dried up then she pleads for money in her YT video saying she has 'reformed herself'... spare me. She got sucj negative backlash on that video she ended up deleting and then closing her YT account and has become a pariah on the internet. as she deserves to be.

What change? Other young girls deciding to not work and live off donations instead? Wow! Smart woman!
