49 Honest Illustrations About Today’s Society By Brecht Vandenbroucke
Brecht Vandenbroucke is a Belgium-based artist who illustrates the darker side of modern society. His subjects are varied but his work often revolves around one central theme, namely looking at the world from an alternative and often satirical perspective. Whether he's highlighting people's obsessions with social media and technology, emphasizing our habits of following the crowd, or graphically depicting the inevitable cycle of violence that plagues our species, his illustrations act as thought-provoking commentaries on the modern world around us.

The Human Race
Circle of death, as opposed to circle of life. I wonder why the backdrop is Africa and le Middle East?
Time To Choose
We choose to see pretty things. That's why we have pretty cat and dog races for pets and hardly anything else. Strong statement.
Aye. The truth is often more important than 'pretty things'.
Load More Replies...What is right in front of you like an actual real problem you don't want to see or deal, but we also are afraud to enjoy the bigger picture because we like to see them through other peoples eyes or even in a virtual way. The " park " is right in front of you, go and enjoy that or make a difference by helping, you' re choice!
Actually they probably would have asked the poor guy to - move on, you're ruining our scene!
But even the artist painting the homeless person isn't helping them, so are they both in the wrong?
You can look at it both ways. Is he exploiting the man or is he bringing a problem to light?
Load More Replies...The point aren't the painters, the point is that people don't see the reality.

I've learned since social media became mainstream, that people pretend well. I know many people who base their self worth on the number of likes they get, who pretend to have the perfect marriage, the perfect children, and the perfect life, when the reality is far from that. And people see those posts and aspire to have it, but they don't realize it doesn't exist! I read an article that said the people who post declarative statements of love for their partners on social media, are THE MOST insecure in their relationships. If people put more energy into their relationships as they do convincing others their lives are perfect, perhaps they'd be a lot happier in those relationships. Just something I've noticed....take it with a grain of salt.
You say that like people didn't do that before social media! That's basically part of the human condition! There's always been a lot of people who want to look like they're the best while hiding their darker or inferior sides.
Load More Replies...I'm sick of all the hate for social media. If it makes someone happy, then why the f**k does anyone care.
Have an upvote from me, too. I don't like all the social media, so I don't participate in all of it. Problem solved.
Load More Replies...Well, what else does matter then? I think this is overly technology critical. Not all people will be scientists or philosophers, authors or politicans, who will have an idealistic inheritance. If social media ist fun for you, why not get into it, as long as you do not get lost in it? After all, what matters is that you have done more good than harm at the point you are buried!
This is true but I think the message is more that our shouldn't live your life by the number of likes you get on social media, and more try to make the most of life while you have it
Load More Replies...I've tried to take a step back from social media. It's part of my job so I can't cut it off completely, but since I have given it a smaller role in my personal life, I find m much happier. Spending time with the real people in your life you see that life is Beautiful when experienced in real time and not through an Instagram filter, though, admittedly, I do find instagram fun at times!
Cemeteries and graveyards are a waste of space, anyways. Also cost a heap for quite a heap of nonsensity.
The Noise
Music
It's almost like we live in a world now, where if it's not documented on social media, it didn't happen. 20 years ago no one felt the need to advertise to the world they were at a concert, a restaurant, a movie, etc. Now its a compulsion.
Are you sure they didn't feel the need? Maybe they were very loud and proud about it at school... They just didn't have the means to literally tell the world like we do today.... Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying what you say is wrong, I'm just inviting you to think deeper. Because I grew up in an era where social media was yet on its way to be built and had a taste of both a world with and without it.
Load More Replies...I know we're to look at this like the blind man is the only one who isn't worried about photos, he's just taking in the music and enjoying the moment, which is great! But I can't help but think that sitting next to all those speakers/amps. he's is also going to be hearing impaired.
My thoughts exactly. You can't just sit calmly like that while being so closw to such huge and powerful speakers.
Load More Replies...one who is blind is able to enjoy the concert by listening and feeling the good vibrations of sound. He may not be able to see with his eyes but he can see the point of the concert better than those that have all their senses, or so it seems considering the only way these people are willing to watch a concert is through their phones. Perhaps they are more blind than the blind for taking their sight for granted like that.
All Of Us
I just avoid all those people, and shop online! Where's my introverts at!?
Been there, done that. And the stupid looks you get when you take several storeys by foot, to arrive at the same time with the people who glanced at you through the closing elevator doors: priceless. I actually have been asked whether I am "afraid" of elevators and escalators after walking a single stair instead of joining the crowded elevator.
I hate escalators. I like to walk up stairs, but when there's no stairs there's an escalator and people will just stand there and some will block you from getting by. If you can't use the stairs then use the elevator.
I wish this one mall I go to has stairs. An escalator ride is a terror ride.
I see this one as one person taking the hard route, whilst the rest try and get up taking the easier but crowded route.
Democracy
This is my favorite!!!!!!! It's so true. There are people in my life that I love and respect, yet, politically, we agree on very little. It doesn't matter.
Apparently It Pays Off To Scream Before You Think
This is how our demacrocy works haha. Simple people don't understand how difficult politics are so politician abuse that by giving people simple questions and answers they can comprehend while the question itself is already wrong lol.
How popular brands with mediocre quality drown out small, local business with great quality, by hypnotizing society with their incessant advertising techniques.
The use of social media as a politicaL platform is unhealthy. The nature of social media does not allow for reflective thought and carefully considered responses or statements. Everyone needs to be first with a story or first to strike controversy without caring whether they can back it up with truth. I have seen some very intelligent people fall prey to this.
The Label Generation
True. But note the different colour of the hands and face in the third picture. I think this is about how people tag other people, and how ugly the painful the world looks if you choose to look at it that way.
Load More Replies...So sad so true, we all walk around with labels that others put on us. Some deserved, and some b/c it's easier to judge than to start a conversation.
Here's a tip: Don't random internet people's words get to you on a personal level.
Good tip. But it doesn't only happen online. Take the bullied and children being massively picked on at school as an example.
Load More Replies...Those who take the names people call them on social media painfully wear them on their bodies. If we could see them we would see why they are in pain.
A Planet You Drew Lines On
Everyday We Walk A Thin Line
People who go online are making themselves vulnerable. There is no safety net to fall on if you make one false move. You just fall and there is no one to save you because you can only walk alone. When your offline you don't have to worry about the dangers of online dangers and you can go outside, enjoy the day with your family.
Thanks for explaining wasn't sure what it meant precisely
Load More Replies...One more with which I object...you can get lost in anything, online or offline. There is more than walking on the edge between being online and offline!
I agree with you here. I find wisdom in most of the other pictures on this list, but this one... I find it exaggerating and technophobe.

There are two kinds of people in this world - neither of them correctly proportioned.

Young Minds In Critical Condition
How I feel at work. People giving me conflicting criticism each saying I need to listen to them and only them but they won't ever talk it over with each other and come to an agreement. I need a new job.
Dude sees both sides of the thing with two sides. (an argument, the media's take on affairs..Whatever,) And he knows more than both yellow and blue, as he has come to his own conclusion (GREEN). goes to show it's better to make your own decision rather than take a side presented to you.
and it's all in how you mix the two and it starts just where the light exists it's a feeling that you cannot miss and it burns a hole through everyone that feels it Blue And Yellow - The Used
We Need More Strong Artists
Admittedly, who just wants to be told, outright "f**k you"? You've got to at least hide it in nuance. You do that and you can sell it to any idiot. Though if the U.S. republican party is any indication, sometimes people will line up, not to be told directly "f**k you", but to be f****d nonetheless.
Sex sells and if you're not into it you might as well brand your product as "f**k you"
A Selection
Our obsession with photoshopping out people we deem too undesirable to be seen in photos. Sad.
Notice how there are just two people in the cinema, and one man on the computer and camera. Who are they doing this for? Themselves.

The smart kid is noticed by his/her peers and not by the teacher, probably because he/she is the smart one at the back of the class who stays quiet and puts his/her head down and works
What is that giant, tiny-headed, leotard-wearing person doing in the middle of a children's playground!? Someone should tell the circus they found their missing strongman!
lol, the artist could at least make their heads bigger, in order to read their facial expressions. That's important.
Load More Replies...This is either depicting that teachers underestimate how smart kids are, or it's depicting how complex classes are due to some kids developing and learning faster than others and those kids will present themselves in such ways. Since schools have that "no child left behind" thing going, I have to wonder if they are also preventing kids from skipping grades.
For me it is a bit of both. Teachers need to see to the individual, I believe both faster and slower learners suffer in the current system.

Part Timer
We try to race and speed through our meaningless jobs so we can go home and enjoy our families and relax.
We spend the majority of our time working and on the go. Time away from work is a very small part of our short lives. It's sad we work our lives away like we will live forever.
I work part time and I love it. I am privileged and blessed to be able to do it.
To me it looks like you spend more hours of the day chasing after your job and money (to live) than actually living.. work rules your life.

This is a bit much. Mozart was good at what he does. Spears is good at what she does. It's like comparing apples with oranges.
I'm not sure that it's meant to be critical of one or the other, just showing that different people feel joy in different things. Correct my if I'm wrong.
Load More Replies...Okay, I can understand ENJOYING Britney Spears, but she doesn't really write / perform songs to cry to.

For Sale
Well, the problem is you're selling elaborate coffins in this day and age. Too expensive! And the person's dead! They don't need it! Cremation has gotten significantly more popular. I would also recommend investing in natural burial methods - with any luck they'll be next to catch on. (Yeah, yeah, not the point, I know.)
What is this comic's non-tolerance of a healthy lifestyle? :(. Is it body shaming that it's trying to highlight? :-/
I think he's actually making a statement about capitalism and marketing. Advertising takes a concept and proliferates it into every area of life. It isn't about healthy lifestyles being good or bad, it's about how money can be made off of it.

When The Job Is Done
I'm very confused. What do various "sailor" characters have to do with body horror?
I think those sailors play important role. We can see the stripper as monser, like chimere. But it might actually a phenomenon like nymph or mermaid. They seduce man, looking like beautiful maidens, but in fact they are eventually killing them. Thus the sailors.

Th-Th-Th-That's All Folks.
This is sad. Not the artwork but the fact that someone is so miserable this was all they could create. There is one great truth in this world; you can either go through life with a smile, try to make right what wrongs you can in the world but try to see the light between dark places as you do, or do this; mope around and focus on negativity and do nothing to change it but judge everyone for how they choose to live. Some of these are clever. I got a smile out of the country borders one, because that's something that actually matters, but the hate for social media and modern music and internet and technology is frankly immature. People change. Humanity changes. You can't stop it, it's natural. As a matter of fact living in the old world and refusing to change is what causes most of the worlds issues. I need not bring up why racism still exists.
This artist makes it seem like everyone is failing. I honestly believe there a lot more good people out there in the world then this artist seems to depict.
Great illustrations of some very important concepts. I may not agree with the perspective in many, but the fact that the issues are so very well illustrated is wonderful. These works of expressive art surely generate very worthwhile thought and starting points for meaningful discussion. Keep up the great work!
The ones who designed this should be punished ! U people are the culprits trying to change the world from taking a ways people's freedom of thinking ! Ha ha ha ! Just kidding ! I love who ever that person is ! I applaud u ! And I love u for the work !
