Powerful. I wish I had an idea of what the hands' ages are. How unfortunate, that our beauty slowly slips away from us over time, yet, what an accomplishment and blessing it is just to live long enough to witness it in ourselves. Even if we don't like our wrinkles, and we wish for our younger years of beauty, we are all essentially beautiful in our own ways, in and out, and ever so graceful and wise, in our old age.

From The Velveteen Rabbit: "Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in your joints and very shabby. Sorry to ruin an emotional story but just stop for a while and look the aspect ratios of the photo and the height of the bike. Obviously someone had left either an toy bike or bike suitable for 4 year old kid hanging into tree's branch or otherwise we have here a natural wonder..

Check out snopes.com. This bike was accidentally (sort of) left in the woods in the 1950's, but definitely intentionally placed at this height, as trees do not "grow up" like this implies. New growth grows up from below, and around the preexisting trunk, but no part of the tree literally moves up. So, if the bike HAD been chained at the base of the tree, the bike would STILL be at the base of the tree, with the tree having grown around it.

That's not a bicycle from 1914, looks more 1950-1960 era. After over 100 years, there wouldn't still be a tire left. Very cool, though!

That is really cool. My husband is a tree surgeon by trade, and he has found all kinds of things INSIDE of trees when he cuts them down. But this one is really shocking and interesting. I really doubt the validity of the title of this photo though--I mean, HOW do we know a boy left his bike and went to war, yadda yadda yadda.... that looks like a kid's bike to me, and what kid goes to war? Maybe I am wrong about that--maybe bikes long ago just looked like little kids' bikes.... The distance from the front wheel to the handlebars just looks like it is a small bike, meant for a child, not a man-child who is going to war.......but no matter how or why this bike got here, it is a neat story to consider, and a very poignant and sad one at that. But perhaps, my good friends, there is a different story to it, one that isn't so sad.............. you just never know. Meanwhile, let me say that that front tire still looks pretty good!! I would like to know the location of this tree.

Probably some dirty people, but if this is the Union Station in Washington, DC it opened in 1907. So, people sat here probably 7/24/365 for about 100 years, I'm guessing even if all the people bathed that morning they'd still leave some body oil on the wall that probably was seldom or never washed with the result we see.

Clearly this is something else................. My first thought is that it is a photo from Hiroshima-- an atomic photo, an 'x-ray photo' that is left behind after a nuclear bomb explodes. The flash from the bomb would leave shadows of people, animals, or objects on walls or other structures, just like this.

Glengoyne distillery, it's sat at the edge of the highlands of Scotland. The whiskey is actually brewed in the highlands and then stored and aged in the lowlands across the road. This is in a big room and they have 4 of these each for the different kind of casks they use

At first I thought that us women are just more "precise", let's say and use the proper place to push the door. Then I thought that it might come from the fact that there are probably way more men at an engineering university. Which makes me sad...but I don't know really, do I? So yes - it made me think. :) A lot.

Friends, it's not about how women open doors it's about the LACK of women in engineering. This difference in gender ratio in the STEM fields is why many groups are working hard to encourage women to apply and be hired.

Two good reasons for the markings at the gents' room.. 1) Gent's are usually taller, but the handplate seems to be at same hight.. Solution to this.. raise the gents' plate aprox 10 cm. 2) Aprox 80% of the population is right handed. But the gents' plate is on the left side. The righties are so imprinted to use the right hand even if the handles are on the left! So righties tries twist body to reach plate on the left. Solution: hang door on left as the ladies door.

I have a cuddly rabbit that is very similar to the bear on the left. He was 27 years old the Christmas just gone, and went EVERYWHERE with me as a child. He has next to no fur, has had his stuffing replaced numerous times but still is very pear shaped with nothing up top where I’d carry him round by his upper body (doesn’t really have a neck), fur is all scratched away on one ear where I used to rub/scratch for comfort. Even now if I’m having a bad day or my anxiety/depression is acting up he’s a comfort. He’s a very well loved rabbit, and is still the one item I’d grab from a burning building.

Probably a simple childhood disease. People died from measles, cholera, influenza, a cold, whooping cough, etc.. that is why we have vaccinations to protect people, especially children, from disease. That is why it is so important to get your kids vaccinated, to prevent these illnesses from coming back. Also had no antibiotics then so a simple scratch could become infected and kill you.

I'm from White Rock, NM, which is very close to here. We used to call these "Indian ladders" or "Anasazi ladders." I liked to use them when we were hiking, but they are protected as artifacts in many places. Some of them go up very steep inclines and can be dangerous if you aren't accustomed to them. They are only for climbing. Some of the rock paths on straighter sections are worn down over a meter deep, but don't have individual footsteps. They are strangely narrow and hard to walk on, and they used to tell us that the Anasazi walked by keeping one foot in front all the time -- scooting, kind of. I recently talked with an expert who says this is nonsense -- the Anasazi probably had narrow frames.

There is something weird with the photograph. How come all the feet stepped on the same place when there is so much place around to walk? And also, holes made from wear from normal feet should not be bowl shaped like that.

This looks like my keyboard. I was a transcriptionist for 30 years. Microsoft used to replace them for me when I wore off the keys. Certain letters: R, S, T, H, L and Y had divots in them from more use than other keys. My family could never use my keyboards because they look at the keys.

Same here. I have the exact same keyboard. I was an MT as well. My family didn't like the keyboard because it was ergonomic, AND because the key letters were missing, so they never used my computer. I used to have to replace my keyboard every 2 years. It's kinda cool seeing someone else having the same situation.

I have this cookbook! Some recipes are hard to follow because some ingredients are not used much anymore, and can sizes are numbered but not by volume. I have no idea what size a #2 can would be. It was given to me by an aunt who has long since passed.

We have a Family Cookbook that has receipes that were once so common "everybody" knew them. It has some ingredients as "a pinch of this" and "a pinch of that"!

Being a ballerina myself, I would say that these shoes are most likely an older version of pointe shoes, which were generally a lot softer than shoes used today. They would then probably be around 2 - 3 days old, depending on the level of dance.

In the town I grew up in, there was an add for a "biscuit company" on the side of one of the buildings downtown. I was informed that the term "biscuit" was slang for a prostitute at the time, and the location advertised (torn down a hundred years ago) was a brothel of some repute which the local authorities winked at (likely because they were frequent customers).

As they should. Unless your engine is designed for it, buying higher octane gas isn't a "treat" for your car, it's a waste at best and possibly damaging. Higher octane gas combusts at a higher temperature, so unless your engine is built to do that, you're just making it work harder.

Tokyo Bunka Kaikan is a concert hall that features primarily musical performances, opera and ballet. The little icon on the map is supposed to be performers on stage. It is supposed to be an incredible venue. Unfortunately in the 8 years I lived in Japan I never had the chance to see a performance there.

Red paint wears out faster than all other colours. Fades the fastest too. I'm not sure of the chemistry.

right handed people will pull the right door open to enter, on the way out, the left door becomes the right door and would be pushed open, as you walk throught you hold the bottom of the handle (from behind you) as you walk away to slow the close of the door.

Maybe it's the office of an auto repair shop. I take my car to a shop with a floor that looks somewhat like this one though they've been in business for over 50 years. Hmm, maybe I should take my camera in there and take a picture of their black & white tile floor where some of the tiles have completely worn away.
