After Being Arrested For Drugs This Man Started Carving Skulls And Turned His Life Around

“I guess we are all a bit fascinated by death”, says Victor, carver of these beautifully macabre animal skulls.

Victor is from Transylvania, Romania, and started carving the skull bones after being arrested for possession of drugs two years ago. “I started with bone carving because I was forced to quit many different substances at the same time. It became my way to detach and was the only thing that kept my sanity throughout that ordeal,” he says. “I had been given a wild boar skull by my friend, which I cleaned to calm my nerves. Then I had the idea to start carving it with an actual drill and turn it into a work of art.”

Faced with a choice between prison time and a hefty fine, Victor chose the fine. Beginning with clumsy and improper tools he began to teach himself the intricacies of this unique art, perhaps unsurprisingly influenced by the black metal/doom and stoner soundtrack he chooses to listen to in the background. Bands like Sleep, Uncle Acid, and the Deadbeats, Pentagram and Bongripper are particular favorites to help get him in the mood.

After a year he managed to get together the cash for a proper micro motor and bits designed for carving, and his dark art designs really took off. He now has customers from all over the world buying his skulls. “I sell to people from all creeds and nations, there doesn’t seem to be a certain type of person that buys this traditional art,” he tells me. Surely, however, there’s a certain darkness to the art that must suit a particular taste. I ask him if he knows if they are used for purposes other than pure decoration, occultist practices for example. “I can only hope,” he says with a laugh.

Victor gets his skulls from a variety of sources. “I usually scour the woods, roadkill, flea markets, sometimes I get them from local farmers that raise and cut down their animals for meat. I usually buy the skulls off them with meat and everything on them, then I clean all of them myself.” Cleaning them is itself an intensive process, involving boiling, an air compressor, and finally hydrogen peroxide baths to whiten them.

Next in the pipeline is a much larger sculpture, a complete horse skeleton. “It’s all going to be very intricately carved, with every rib and vertebrae including the skull,” Victor tells me. At over 4 meters it would make an imposing addition to your collection!

It is super beautiful. But idk, can't continue looking at it, I'm still getting some creep and nausea, and no, it's not because of the bones. So dear Victor, let me congratulate you with closed eyes! Your story is inspiring.

Good for him for turning his life around and in the process making artwork for others to enjoy.

My son has one of these sitting in the office of the parkour school he owns here in MN, USA. One of the students had given it to the owners. After reading this, I emailed my son the link and asked where it came from. Here is the conversation: Son: [Name-redacted] bought it for us. He claims he got it from satan. Me: He bought it for his own house. And then his wife said, "No way are you keeping that thing in our house." :-) That's my guess. Son: That's actually literally what happened.

What does his arrest and the charges have to do with anything? He shouldn't have been arrested for possession for drugs anyway.

What an artist. I love this stuff. However that mask is not good enough to keep the bone dust from his lungs. Needs to change it before he ends up in another health hole.

Wonderful work . A really skilled artist. However that mask is not good enough to keep the bone dust out of his lungs. Needs to upgrade before he has a whole load of other health problems.

Skulls and things of this nature are actually quite trendy in decorating. I travel for a living and see them in high end shops when I'm out and about on my days off. I was recently in San Francisco and there is a cool shop there that has them and they're not NEARLY so nice as these. You'll also see replicas in catalogs that are again not as nice. Victor has a good niche here. Good on you man.
