Photographer Travels Around The World To Capture The Incredible Beauty Of Red Hair, Photographs More Than 37 Redheads
While redheads have become synonymous with Ireland and Scotland, American photographer Brian Dowling who now lives in Berlin(Germany), photographed over 130 redheads from 20 different countries for his project “Redhead Beauty”.
Red hair is the rarest hair color in the world and is caused by a gene mutation know as MC1R which affects about 1% of the world population. This gene mutation can also affect a person’s tolerance to pain, sunlight, and their hairs’ ability to gray. Red hair will instead turn blonde or pure white when you age.
Brian started this portrait project which spanned three summers to show the real beauty of red hair and wanted to help break down stereotypes people often have of redheads with his photographs. His art book “Redhead Beauty” is available on Kickstarter.

She looks very Dutch. Must be the cheeky smile. As for the colour, please note that it's an overcast day (not at all unusual in the Netherlands) so the hair looks a bit duller. The colour is close to the dark blonde that many southern Dutch (including I) have, but it's definitely red.

Dude...No offence but...None of them are redheads. #14 looks brown, #19 looks blond, #28 looks also brown and blond, and all the rest looks ginger and orange colour. I was expecting to see red! Okay, not natural red becz it doesn't exist , but red! Because I love it and I don't usually find those kind of photos. So next time, be more specific so that nobody will lose their time! They are really pretty though, all of them! and nice work.

This is my daughter Thayana, she was born ginger (ruiva in Brazil). I'm a lucky mother to have not one but two ginger girls. We live in London now, lots of gingers around here, but in Brazil she is very coveted, just like a diamond. Congrats Brian Dowling, you are a star.

She's the only one that makes this "all over the world". They're all either from the US, Europe, Or Australia. They didn't say "native" from all over the world. There are red heads all over South America, and I guarantee you some live in Japan. Probably some even visiting India for a little while.

Because most red heads tend to have very fair skin, and do not do well in continued exposure to sunlight. Those skin cells which do contain larger quantities of melenin will produce more of this, causing spots on the skin that are not like that of their neighbors.

Red hair fades as people age, so it is it's most striking when young...also...if the focus is on hair, makes sense to picture it long as there's more of it...& can show the natural variance better.

As the photographer, it's entirely acceptable for him to choose the subjects he would prefer to shoot. I don't understand the point of coming to this gallery, knowing what the subject would be (since it's clearly titled), just to whine about how you don't like the models he picked. I was looking forward to seeing these, now that I have I'm disappointed. They are all thin young woman. I'm a middle aged redhead with 6 red headed sons. I wish the pictures represented a broader range of readheads.

People raving about lack of diversity, but only 37 of the 130+ photos are featured here. Who are we to say all persons photographed are "thin, white, young, model-esque women"? I doubt the photographer was only seeking out those who fit in this image--seems like it would make for an even more difficult project.

Um, they all look the same. All tall, thin, with diamond face shape. Where are the short chubby red heads? Also they are all White. There are African Americans and Latinos who are red heads.
