There’s something about humans and technology that makes them a perfect combo for a disaster waiting to happen. And even though we live in 2020, where tech has become a quintessential part of our daily lives, it doesn’t mean it’s as easy as pie. Don’t believe me?

Ask the tech support workers who have been witness to such monstrosities, it makes you wonder what on earth their clients were thinking. A client upgrading his phone and keeping his old screen protector ‘cause why not? Check. A mouse covered in hand grease up to the point that it’s just a lump of sheer nastiness? Check. Rice inside the iPhone? Sure. Cables tangled so badly, they resemble a wasp nest? Of course.

Thanks (do we really wanna thank them for dis?) to the Reddit community that goes by the all-telling name r/techsupportgore, we now have pure nightmare material for tech support workers or any other person who is no stranger to common sense. Psst! More painfully funny and cringe-worthy tech and gadget disasters waiting in part 1.

Yeah, I remember when our network guys "tidied" the cabling in our server room on a Friday night. Cue Saturday morning me on out of hours support with a massive hangover starts getting calls about issues with the card payments. I had to go into work and retrace their cabling, turns out they'd forgotten to plug the connection to our bank back in. Thanks guys.

Fun fact! Rice rarely helps. The phone dries because the water inside evaporates. If you really want a quick solution, you should take the phone backing off, and put the phone out to dry. This will be a better solution. The jojo reference here is that there is living things (plant) inside a non living thing. (This is Requiem! I’ve used the arrow and now have the ability to post jojo references AND facts at the same time. For more info, read my bio!)

Rice is actually detrimental. The dust may get into the phone, clump up with the moisture and do some serious damage.

Some time ago, Bored Panda contacted Coffeechipmunk, the moderator of the r/techsupportgore subreddit, who said that the most popular posts in the community are usually the ones that show a device a moment away from exploding.

“It’s both dangerous and cool,” explained the mod. “They probably get so big because people post the pics and you think, 'Wow, that's just a bomb at that point.'"Whoever is wondering why the subreddit got so popular, it all comes down to the fact that “Honestly... it's very fun," Coffeechipmunk said.

Looks like the face of the key has worn thin and the mechanism broken through at the weakest point. This happens on frequently used keys - I use Ctrl and Shift the most and you can see what happened to my trusty Sony Vaio after about 10 years of continuous use. Back in the first years of PCs the company I worked with had inhouse programmers to write the business software for the clients. One programmer was notorious for speed typing, only to have to backspace furiously to make corrections. After repairing his keyboard several times, they created one out of spares, with 10 backspace keys on it.

“In a time where most of the internet can be incredibly serious and most times saddening or angering, r/techsupportgore is fun because you go on it and you can laugh (and/or cringe) at the crazy posts. Where else can you see a post like, 'Wow, these cables really are messy' to 'A lizard fried my motherboard' back to back?”

Essentially, it attracts a bunch of people that enjoy tech and the very worst of it. Also, it’s especially relevant to the current generations Y and Z who basically grew up with tech around them. For these kids and young adults, seeing the picture of someone trying to charge their new laptop without taking it out of the box is essentially priceless.

Ah, the irony. The German word for snake is also a term for someone who‘s deceitful. Seeing as our lovely Deutsche Telekom dastardly 'renewed' the contract I had with them (thus making me pay for my phone/internet TWICE for 1,5 years), I vote for this to become their official representation photo.

Amazon did this to me... I ordered 3 6 TB hard drives and they shipped them in a bubble mailer that looked like a truck ran over it. All of the HD boxes were crushed. The drives weren't damaged but I sent them back anyway along with a really stern phone call. They replaced them (actually sent me 4 instead of 3.) Ordered some lavender soap bars for the wife and they packed them in paper and bubble wrap and in an oversized box that was so secure you could have shipped nitroglycerin in. Go figure.

When you package stuff at Amazon, you get told by the computer which size package to use. The algorithm sometimes makes weird decision, but doing it different that it tells you, will get you in trouble.

I'll be the pedant: Li-On batteries do NOT have battery acid (sulfuric acid usually). They have electrolytic fluid/gel/powder. When a Lithium-Ion is charged and discharged they slowly build up mineral deposits between the anode and the cathode know as dendrites. When the dendrites finally bridge the anode and the cathode together it creates a short circuit. The shirt causes all kinds of damage on the molecular level that among other things can cause the battery to swell a bunch. If you see swelling of a Li-On battery, DO NOT USE IT! Replace the battery or the phone.

The lithium battery inside the laptop has swelled. The swelling comes from gas pressure generated by the charge/discharge reaction being incomplete due to aging (or improper charging) of the cell. It's especially noticeable here because of how thin the laptop is.

They were always highly sought after between managers as there were never enough and/or lost because we left them in random places. Looks like this one most likely got ran over by a forklift or truck while in receiving. download-5...5f327c.jpg download-5fc933a5f327c.jpg

Failure of the circuitry that drives the motor, or a failure of the motor itself. HDs use stepper motors to precisely control the speed of the disc, and for indexing purposes. If the disk was spinning at 7200RPM and was forcibly brought to a halt by a circuitry problem, that could result in enough energy to shatter the platter.

Wow! This reminds me of something I used to do when I was younger! And by younger, I mean like 10. If something I wanted to use didn't have a plug on it, just wires exposed, I would put the wires into the wall socket, then plug something else in on top of them to hold them in place, and it worked! Sometimes you had to have a few goes at it before it worked, but it normally always worked! I think I saw my dad doing it with something and decided to do it myself lol! And yes, I DID get in trouble for doing it but, in my defence, I didn't realise just how dangerous what I was doing actually was!

Except the really expensive ones, most cases today are made of razorblade steel. The steel is sharp and very thin. If you haven't fully assembled the case, most of them would even collaps under the weight of a feather. You are probably still thinking of the cases that weighed as much as a Sherman tank.

It's just a IT-scrapyard. A lot of computerparts have minimal amounts of gold, silver and other precious metals in them. The very first PCB's had a lot of gold in them so you could make good money by scrapping them and filtering the gold out.

Actually, covering opening is wise if you have a well-designed layout where only a few opening remain, guaranteeing a swift stream of air over all hot components. Covering everything is a little bit too brave, though.

Those ventilation holes are there by design to have the optimum airflow inside the case. I've had to replace a lot of pc parts because someone "improved" the airflow in their pc case.

There was one manufacturer who produced very bad capacitors that would leak and explode within the year. Un fortunately he supplied all major brands. In our firm computers that died because of this got the mark AEC. (Amazing Exploding Capacitors.)

I had an old electrolytic capacitor like that blow up in my face. Massive hiss and a burst of steam and I jumped back like I'd been shot! LOL

Dollar tree carries phone/tablet Chargers. They last about a week but if you need one until pay day it is ok. Never buy the cords that light up from there, though. I've messed two tablet batteries up like that. Just the plain purple or whatever will work fine for a bit.

Yuck. Back in the day, I remember hearing stories of people opting to get cable boxes that were returns instead of new ones, to save a few bucks on cable hookup, and ending up with cable boxes full of roaches. Obviously the cable company never looked at them, much less cleaned them up, before giving them out to unsuspecting new customers. (Yeah, cable companies have always been evil mofos.)

I can't stand that. My boys go to stay at their dad's some weekends and his mom smokes. He moved in to help since his dad died last year. She is now on oxygen, smokes 2 packs a day and the walls literally drip with tar from smoking. In a nice house (if walls were cleaned). Her own mother at age 85 a few years ago caught her hair and lungs on fire from smoking with oxygen on. And it will happen to her too. The kids dad usually takes them to one of his friends that has kids house and him and kids hang out there because I complain about the smoke. I really hate too, they are good people, but when there is tar literally dripping down walls, imagine their lungs. If you spend 5 minutes there your hair and your clothes smell like it.

What you see wrinkled in the middle of the picture are "heat pipes" for carrying heat away from the CPU to a heatsink mounted underneath the fan. Clearly whoever opened the case didn't understand that those aren't flexible...

Perhaps they wanted to reset the bios by unplugging the internal battery, like you can easily do in a desktop or tower. Some manufacturers secure the bios with a password to keep endusers from changing settings or overclocking the device.

None of that would be reset by removing the system battery. All it powers is the real-time clock function.
