Company Tries To Save Money By Tricking Woman Into Extra Work With No Raise, Now Has To Pay Way More
Negotiating a raise is a great way to learn the impressive mental gymnastics one’s boss can summersault through to find ways to not pay you. This is ultimately why the most secure way to increase one’s paycheck is a promotion or even an entirely new position.
A woman asked the internet for advice on how to handle her manager’s actions. She had just obtained her late coworkers better paying role, only to discover that her boss had decided that, suddenly, there was no room in the budget for a raise. After considering what the internet suggested, she later came back with an update of what she did next.
Most people would expect that a promotion comes with a raise

Sometimes it’s worth still trying to negotiate
The phrase perfect fit is a powerful admission of your value and you should use it as the cornerstone of your negotiation. When a manager acknowledges that you are the ideal person for a role that was recently valued significantly higher than your current pay, she has already validated your market worth. Negotiating in the face of a supposed budget freeze requires a blend of empathy for company constraints and a firm commitment to your own career trajectory. You are effectively being asked to take on a promotion without the accompanying compensation, which creates a significant disparity between your contribution and your reward.

When a company lists a position for a specific salary range, they are publicly stating what that work is worth to them in the open market. By asking you to absorb those duties for seventy five thousand dollars while they previously intended to pay up to one hundred thousand dollars, the business is attempting to capture a massive discount at the expense of your professional well being. You should approach your manager with a focus on the business impact of this transition rather than just your personal feelings. Explain that while you are thrilled to be seen as the perfect fit, the significant increase in responsibility necessitates a conversation about a fair market adjustment.
If the answer remains that there is no budget, you should pivot the conversation toward prioritizing your current workload. Ask her which of your current four projects should be dropped or deprioritized to make room for this higher level work. This forces the manager to acknowledge that your time is a finite resource and that you cannot simply add a full time role on top of your existing one without something else giving way. Building a professional boundary does not mean being difficult. It means being clear about what you can sustainably deliver. You can tell your manager that you are happy to help with a temporary transition but that you cannot permanently take on a higher grade role at your current salary level. Mentioning that doing so would compromise the quality of all your projects because your focus would be spread too thin is a logical business argument that protects the company as much as it protects you. According to advice from experts at Harvard Business Review, successful negotiators often look for ways to expand the pie rather than just fighting over a single slice.
There is no reason to do more for free
If the cash is truly unavailable, you might negotiate for a change in title now to reflect your new seniority. This will make you much more marketable if you eventually decide to leave for a company that can pay you what you are worth. You can also suggest a formal written agreement that guarantees a salary review in three months or provides a one time bonus once the budget cycle resets. You must remember that you are your own best advocate and if the company values your work as much as they claim, they will find a way to meet you halfway. If they refuse to budge on both the pay and the workload, they are giving you very valuable information about how much they actually respect your contribution.

While you want to be a team player, being a perfect fit does not mean being a free resource. You can maintain your empathy for the team’s loss while remaining firm about your professional requirements. Tell her that you want to honor the legacy of the previous work by ensuring it is handled by someone who has the dedicated time and appropriate resources to succeed. This approach makes it much harder for a manager to label you as difficult because you are championing the health of the project itself.
Standing up for yourself now sets a precedent for how you will be treated throughout your entire tenure at this organization. You deserve to be compensated for the level of work you are performing and your manager needs to understand that her budget constraints are a problem for her to solve with her superiors, not a burden for you to carry alone. Fortunately for all of us, she later returned with an update on what happened next, which can be found below.

This is one reason to stay flexible and keep looking for other jobs. You don't have to apply or accept them, but it gives you more confidence when dealing with this kind of c**p.
Today I finally acknowledged that I am worth less than the price of fixing my blinds to this company because instead of fixing them for a CQC inspection on Wednesday, they found a way to bind them even higher up so will be spending this afternoon squinting at job applications.
