30 Photos That Show The Terrifying Power Of The Taal Volcano Which Just Erupted In The Philippines
As Australia is being devastated by uncontrollable bushfires, the Philippines was just hit by another natural disaster. Taal Volcano located on the big island of Luzon erupted January 12, 2020, reportedly sending ash and steam up to 6-9 miles into the sky. With the alert level of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) escalating from Alert Level 2 to Alert Level 4, it is now believed that "a hazardous explosive eruption is possible within hours to days."
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology ordered an evacuation in the towns of Balete, San Nicolas and Talisay in Batangas and other towns within the shores of Taal Lake. As people watched in awe and terror, some managed to snap pictures of the erupting volcano. The images show the smoke and ash rising from the mouth of Taal, reaching high up in the sky. Due to this, the Manila International Airport Authority was forced to suspend all flights to and from all terminals of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
Unfortunately, numbers aren't stacked in the residents' favor as a more severe explosive eruption seems to be just moments away and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs issued a situation report stating that an estimated number of 459,300 people are within the 14 km danger zone.

This looks like a dragon breathing into the water..... beautiful, but scary!
"Volcano erupts" . Photographer: I'm about to become the best wedding photographer in the world.
A wedding attended by ancient gods? Hephaestus (Ifaistos = volcano) was the god of fire, metalworking, stone masonry, forges and the art of sculpture. He was the son of Zeus and Hera and married to Aphrodite by Zeus to prevent a war of the gods fighting for her hand. Vulcan, in Roman religion, god of fire, particularly in its destructive aspects as volcanoes or conflagrations. Poetically, he is given all the attributes of the Greek Hephaestus.
Scarry as hell, or Hades. Here is the truth behind the notion of hell, not on Earth, but in it. We are tiny, unimportant specks of matter if we take a look at us compared to a grander scale of things. And yet so precious.
Load More Replies...This is a stunningly beautiful and fascinating photo, awe-inspiring and light-hearted at the same time. Well done!
yeah, i would like to know if it was photoshopped or not.
Load More Replies...was this taken on halloween? its kind of spooky but amazing at the same time
Bro, this is so cool.. but isn't that a little dangerous to be there? Everyones lights are on lol
Humans electrify countries/set off fireworks/fire missiles/cause explosions, and Mother Nature just says “Hold my beer”.
It's something called volcanic lightning https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volcanic_lightning
Load More Replies...Red lightning is being seen through a cloud of ash.
Load More Replies...Do I see red, white, and blue lightning? Is that caused by temperature of the bolt?
Ashes that are spewed high up into the stratosphere can affect the climate: https://eos.org/research-spotlights/volcanic-ash-contributes-to-climate-cooling
Yes, one volcano spewing gases and clouds of ashes can do WAY more damage than humans could ever hope to do.
Load More Replies...it looks like a giant hanging on to a tornado dangggg!! God, good job
2 volcanos erupting can spew more c**p into the air in one day than any generation has been able to throw up there in years. Every time Mount Etna burps (and it burps a lot) it kicks more than 300,000 tons of sulphur dioxide into the air PER DAY! Plus 2 other gasses that aren't nice to our lungs. So yes, I believe in climate change, but I don't believe we caused it, and unless we can stop volcanos from erupting, there won't be anything we can do to stop it either.
looks like a horse again (the nose is at the tip of Taal volcano)
And people keep saying we don't exist... Pfft. ;-)
Load More Replies...The pic seems taken from the skies... The aerosols can damage the plane's structural integrity, especially the engine, and potentially down it.
Not from a distance. They would have to fly through the ash for that to happen.
Load More Replies...this looks POWERFUL wow if this were a try not to say "wow" challenge i am in negative 10000 :)
What's up with those three little cloud shaped things in the top right corner?? They are the same exact shape, it's weird...anyone else notice that or know what the heck?
I mean there is a time to be funny, and then there is a time to realize that this is not for laughs that real people are affected by this type of explosion :(
Load More Replies...Elle! Where's Elle? Dammit, the world's freakin' ending, man!

Be right back, gonna wake up my brother... Gojiro (Godzilla) will paste that three-headed interstellar interloper and show him what for...
Load More Replies...Poor people, this ash is toxic. This is seriously bad for anyone living there. :(
Load More Replies...:( such waste, but someday, the effect of volcanic eruption will make the soil more agricultural
The farmers in the area may lose their crops entirely. Let's hope these pineapples are close to ripe. The ash weighs a huge amount and just a few inches can do horrendous damage; my husband remembers shoveling a foot of it off his mom's roof so it wouldn't collapse after Mt. Saint Helens blew.
Oof, I never realized how devastating ash could be to plants. Now I understand why volcanic eruptions and meteor strikes are so devastating to ecosystems even far away. There's no way these plants can do photosynthesis through that layer of ash, and I'm not sure a storm could mitigate this much.
If only even a small fraction of the energy released tould be harvested!
these should be in horror movies hehehe just thought of " The Wizard of OZ '
As I look at these pictures, I keep hearing Night on Bald Mountain in my head...
What a beautiful picture, Mother Nature is raw, powerful even murderous yet she is absolutely awe inspiring
A nope-cloud, just like the many similar-looking ones we have seen in photos of the horrendous bushfires in Australia.
Yeah seems similar of horrendous bushfires but it looks more like an Electrical thunder storm lightning beyond the sky, above, 13 km.
Load More Replies...looks like another horse (eyes and the nose by the roof of the building)
And life goes on, oblivious to the power of the planet we live on and the skies above us.
When death smiles in your face—all one can do is smile back.
Load More Replies...For all we know, this wedding could’ve taken place at high noon, but it looks more like dusk because of the clouds from the volcano.
Very few people will ever have wedding photos like this one! Well done for going ahead with your special day. Good luck for your future together.
He be here to speak for the trees we keep cutting.
Load More Replies...I see a baby in the middle with people gathered around it by the eyes. And yes, that creature on the bottom!
I think they've progressed beyond heckling and have gone to plasma weapons, Bones... Beam us outta here, Scotty!
Load More Replies...How many of you remember the movie The Neverending Story? A minor character called the Rockbiter? There he is, under that mushroom, looking morose as ever... "They look like such strong hands... Don't they? I thought they did..."
Looks like it blasted its dome off, though it’s probably just smoke and ash clouds.
I keep being astounded at the power in these images... and at how much opportunity for showing the human tendency for pareidoilia, too (seeing faces and other images in everyday objects). In this one, I can see a distinct figure of an old man's head with a little, pointed beard, maybe smoking a pipe (his head is turned away a bit) and a froth of frizzy, upward flying hair--looks like a water-colour. He's standing with one arm out bent at the elbow, the hand at his waist. He's wearing a ruffled or baggy shirt, or coat and he he's got a big belly. :-) Another image I see is lower on the plume--about where the old man's groin would be--that looks like a baroque gargoyle's face. I think I'm going to save this image and have some fun with it, later. :-)
The author's info is at the bottom of this article.

"As I look into the depths of Hell, I think of all of my humanity." - Stephen Gailliot
It's frightening when it takes you a moment to realize that colours in this image HAVEN'T been altered by filters or other artifice... other than by Nature... When a human is the only bright colour... that the ash has already reached that place... Yikes.
Wonder how deep in the earth the particles that make that color come from.
I'd say that's the sunlight reflecting on the ash.
Load More Replies...And to think according to them, it is only just clearing its throat. It has yet to actually "blow". Scary thought.
Oh, I didn't know that.. that is scary! I hope this clearing gives people a bit of time to evacuate, if they can. Or will it not blow for a couple more years (or who knows how long?)
Load More Replies...Ooh! I'll enjoy looking for them! Pareidolia is a neat human brain glitch that's fun to play with. We all have it; it's the tendency to see patterns like faces in everyday objects. We've probably all played that game when we were kids, where we looked for things like animals or faces in the clouds. That's pareidolia. Anything we see isn't real, it's just the way our brains work. We're wired to see patterns in ordinary things 'cuz it's an ancient survival trait: Og didn't see the tiger in the bushes, so he got eaten, but Zag DID and got everyone else to safety 'cuz she thought she saw it's outline in the way the shadows by that bush were shaped... Neurology and psychology is cool. Braaiinnss... :-)
Odd shape, especially with a hole in the diamond shape. Calling all volcanologists: what causes something like that?
I think it's lightning. That dark curve to the upper right makes me think this is an image taken from an aircraft. If so, flames wouldn't make much sense. Not the right colours, anyway.
Load More Replies...Another picture that looks like it blasted its dome off (like Mt St Helens—-look at before and after pics)
Nope. The empty caldera in the foreground is a different volcano (looks familiar... not sure if I'm right--probably not--but it kinda looks like Pinatubo. It's on the same Island). Taal is waaay in the back.
Load More Replies...I wonder how much volcanos contribute to "global warming" and how the world can prevent eruptions to save our planet.
St Helens blew out the side, this blew out the center cinder cone more or less UP.... The bigger problem is this is like Crater Lake OR. Only 50 miles across the rim, the lake at +5MSL. Only the last carter rim keeping the sea out. when Taal lake starts to boil. it will be too late to run 75 miles north in manila...
Looks like Krakatoa. It is the birth of a new island or the building of one.
At a guess it is traffic on a road in the foreground
Load More Replies...All these photos are awsome and amazing, I just pray that all the people nearby are safe.
Well the ones that heeded the warning are alive, the rest ..... probably with the horses, cows, pigs that couldn't escape, left to die and be half buried by ash or floating in nearby water. Really sad event here and I am really hurt to see how many people made a "funny" or found these images entertaining in a joking way.... really sad event.

so i was at home when it errupted. my bf came home that night saying most stores closed earlier because of ash fall. we are 5-6 hours away from that place. though we are not very affected, it still is scary knowing i was there just a couple of years back.
Such mind-boggling power, such terrifying beauty. Only one thing to do - FLEE.
