I'm Matteo and I'm a professional photographer. I've always been fascinated by the beauty of birds.
In 2013 I decided to go in search of a Concincina as a pet for my studio garden in Milan. That's when I met Giorgio, a farmer who invited me to an aviary exhibition.
That very same day, the Concincina hen Jessicah (cue Unchained Melody) stole my heart.
My friend and work partner Moreno joined me in this passion/madness and we started to take pictures of literally hundreds of chickens and roosters.
Just look at them. They are beautiful. And they know it.
Eventually, we ended up with enough material to think about publishing a book. That's why we just launched a Kickstarter campaign.

This comb (the top of his head) could be the new color for a lipstick!
Chickens are awesome and these photos show how pretty and cool they are! I love their interesting dinosaur looking feet & legs too! I have 15 pet hens and 2 pet roos. This is a Golden Sebrite. I have a Golden Sebrite hen. Her name is Picassa because she looks like a beautiful painting. Their feathers look like this all the time.
Beautiful! This is a Golden Seabrite rooster. I have a Golden Seabrite bantum hen (bantum means a chicken is a smaller size/breed). My Golden Seabrite's name is Picassa because she's so beautiful and looks like a painting!
Are you absolutely certain that the chicken isn't painted? What is this chicken called?
Matteo, Love your project! Had one of my own, parallel, when I found chicken at barn starving to death with cross beak. Took Sister home hand fed her, my friend said due to her “special needs” name her Sista Eddie. We had plans for Sista Eddie to go to my friends special Education class when she was going to teach her kids the letter “c”. The morning she was to go teach my sweet Sista began to crow. My Sista was a brotha! Never changed his name, already coming to the call- a man’s man chicken he could handle, “Sista”! I took Sista with me every where I went, people started inviting us to schools & nursing homes, he became a therapy roo. He also became an author of a book, “Hold On To Hope” then “...Kindness” &“Happiness” is out soon. Sista wanted his books illustrated by his “Special” buddies, those with special needs. “Happiness” was illustrated by a 15yr old born without arms use toes. Amazon: Sista Eddie, Hold On To Hope or Sista Eddie Hold On To Kindness (Look for Happiness too)
Would love to have the name of each one next to the pictures! They are magnificent!
Make a pose please now don't move the pink due is simply gorgeous, this will be a master piece.
Amazing, gorgeous all we had on our farm when I was a kid was white chickens.
This is a Golden Sebright. Wyandottes are a heavier bodied bird. Still gorgeous!
Load More Replies...So what? This photographer didn't "steal" anything. They expanded on a concept that already exist, just like so many other artist in history have done. Honestly, I like THIS artist work much better than Stephen Green-Armytages chicken book.
Load More Replies...This actually rooster, breed name is sebright (silver one are also supercool!)
I knew he reminded me of some US President. Check out Martin Van Buren
Wow, I love his powerful awesome dinosaur legs!!!! And those amazing copper and green and black contrast, simply gorgeous majestic rooster (hen?!)
Looks cool, but makes me sad that we have bred chickens to have all these extra feathers on their feet and legs of a type that would only cause them problems. :\
Belgium Bearded...I named mine Waffle! He is a character!
They're so cute, just like their great, great, great......grand parents. Velocirapt...fc4bdc.jpg
That photo makes no sense there but I agree they look like their chicken grandparents.
Load More Replies...We indicate every breed in the book (teaser wink wink, go check our kickstarter wink wink)
Load More Replies...wow these are amazing, you never really stop and appreciate how beautiful these birds are.
This is an amazing post! Honestly, the photographs were very well done to emphasize how beautiful these animals are. Keep up the good work!
Thank you! They were really easy to photograph to be honest :)
Load More Replies...Couldn't you make these photos any darker? I can still almost see the chickens.
How can chickens look like they're twice divorced? Jk, but these are really awesome
Absolutely beautiful photography. Chickens are my favorite birds. I rescued one girl, she lived with me for six years before she passed. She had her own dog bed, loved watermelon, would lay down in front of the TV to watch the Flinstones, would peck my bed so I could pick her up and cuddle, and would purr me to sleep just like a kitty! :) Oh she loved listening to Mozart too, I'd play it when she was outside and she would lay down and watch the butterflies around her in my yard :')
I call my chickens the “feather dogs”, they really are so smart and sweet!!!
Load More Replies...I feel like crying whenever I see a live chicken because I had a cousin who had chickens and whenever my parents and I visited his family, I always hung out with him in the chicken coop. He tragically passed away a few years ago. He was 20.
*offers a sad smile, and if it is ok a hand to hold just for a bit.* "sorry for your loss" seems so inadequate.
Load More Replies...If you havent seen the documentary, Chicken People, it IS a MUST SEE!!! VERY FUNNY!
We name each breed in the book! (sorry I have to do some promo)
Load More Replies...Because that's an argument that you want to avoid?
Load More Replies...I was hoping to see a Dominicker... they are black and white and one of the larger breeds of chicken. I raised one when I was 10ish. A handsome rooster who followed me like a puppy. He got along with everyone, except my mom.
Chickens are lovely in general... except when you are going past them with a piece of salad (or anything) that you would have liked to eat by yourself...
This is truth! I walk outside with a piece of toast and suddenly I have 14 chickens surrounding me
Load More Replies...I am also professional photographer but I don't find these photographs professional at all.
Roosters are male chickens... back to school you go!
Load More Replies...Absolutely love these. Really great photography skills, by the way.
Is it bad that I know most of the breeds of these chickens *already* and have had many of the different kinds?
I like my chickens flat on the back, roasted golden brown, with a side order of stuffing and cranberry sauce.
To look at photos of beautiful, intelligent animals that want to live and feel pain and emotion and think of how you want it to die horribly for you to have a snack is disturbing.

Hi guys, thank you for the article on our beloved Chic!ken project. If you’d like to know more about this project, we just published a full case study here: http://www.atellani.com/chicken-collection-photography-book-tranchellini-monti.html
Wow, I had no idea there were so many different kinds of chickens. They are all so beautiful.
Congratulations on your photographic ability, these images are beautiful, well done, Bravo!!!

I'm fond of chickens, each bird is an individual. We had a rooster, Pretty Boy, hehad a golden mane and was a true gentlebird. When his hens laid their first egg (like humans birthing, its a painful frighting experience), he would sit next to his hen and comfort her. Each hen has a song she would sing to her chicks at night. While she nestled over them to keep them warm and safe. They're songs are sweet and different. For a long time I couldn't eat chicken out of respect for them. We didn't kill our birds. And soon ended up with over 100. We did collect the eggs that weren't sat on.
They are gorgeous. Makes me want to get a chicken. I had a friend who had a couple of bantam roosters. He said they were like a mad dog with feathers.
There are a few champion lookers there. A splendid set of photos.
Lovely, lovely animals... I’d highly suggest anyone who reads this should get their own! Not only do you have extremely fresh and delicious eggs that are much healthier for you, but it also means you are boycotting really horrible egg farms most chickens suffer in. They make great compost for the garden too! It’s a great way to be environmentally conscious, healthier, and an animal welfare advocate while getting free food and a wonderful pet. I love my chickens and ducks!!!
The lighting is abysmal. Next time hire a professional like me. It's one thing to create mood with light and dark, it's quite another to screw it all up and do a terrible disservice to the chickens who are actually beautiful. Shame on you.
It's meant to look dark... it's very stylized.
