15 Most Inhumane Ways That Cities Try To Fight Homeless People From Sleeping In Public Places
Hostile architecture. You might not be familiar with the term, but you've probably seen it in action. Those spikes on the window ledges, designed to keep the birds away. Or, in a more sinister fashion, things like strategically-placed armrests or rocky floors, cynically installed to ensure that vulnerable people in need of shelter are forced to look elsewhere.
Not only are homeless folks discriminated against directly and culturally, but also structurally too. These exclusionary designs, denying people even the right to find a place to rest, are a stark illustration of our society's collective disregard for basic humanity. Surely we can do better than this?
This heartbreaking list, compiled by Bored Panda, shows some of the most offensive examples of 'anti-homeless' designs, and it will make you ever so grateful for that roof over your head. Because it seems that if misfortune strikes and you should one day happen to lose it, you are most certainly not welcome to try and find a place to sleep on the streets. You’ve Got To Be The Worst Kind Of Heartless Twat If You Can Go Around Slashing Homeless People’s Tents
Homeless or not, wanderer or CEO, you simply don't destroy someone else property. This make me so angry.
This happened to me and, let me tell ya, the tears of pure RAGE which followed...thank goodness for Homeless Day Centres.
A lot of people are one month's pay from being homeless, yet many of them see homeless people as a separate species. I actually feel sorry for whoever did this, anyone who shows so little empathy for a fellow human must find it hard to look in the mirror. Being kind is so underrated and so easy, it costs nothing, makes you a better person and enriches your soul; win-win. I'm not saying I'm perfect, far from it but I try to be kind
Can't have empathy if you've not been in that situation. Can only hope that people can scrape up some sympathy from somewhere. So many don't. I totally agree though - kindness is one of the biggest things we should encourage in our children.
Load More Replies...I work in downtown Portland OR and unfortunately I see this type of thing happen a lot but most of the time it is homeless people vandalizing other homeless people's stuff. I have to intervene one night because 1 homeless guy walked up to another homeless guy while he was sleeping and just started kicking him and his things.
Round up these pictures and Everytime the president gives billions of dollars to another country who let's face it wouldn't p**s on America if we were on fire or if not

Someone Installs These Poles To Prevent The Homeless From Sleeping Here, They Find A Solution Anyways
This is pretty stupid and I bet this also breaks fire law about safe escape from a burning building.
This is own goal, this block not only homles but even people with wheelchair, at least mine couldn't not pass
I think that entrance is probably non public and mostly unused. Most people don’t set up such barriers to an entry. Those poles exist for only one reason, to keep homeless people from sleeping there.
Load More Replies...On the other hand, have you seen some of those places? Full of old cloths, empty bottles, smell of p**s... No wonder they fight back sometimes.
Makes the homeless feel safer as they are higher up (like cats sleeping in towers)
Modern Problems Require Modern...oh Wait
Sadly its a catch 22 either way -- avoid the business because of the spikes or avoid the business because of the homeless camped in front of the entryway
Load More Replies...Do not fight the homeless! Fight homelessness. It is a disgrace for modern, rich societies that social housing is not prioritized.
Just for reference, this was in England and i do believe they have removed them since this, everyone was outraged, and rightly so.
You know... Its not about the sleeping. But, unfortunately about the mess and smell left behind. I dont mean it that against anyone but... My First high school entrance was located in a passage zder the buildings. That place was deffinetly been occupied by homeless people. The problem was, they not only sleep there, they also p**s into the corner and many time we even found a human excrements there, and when was raining outside we must standing outside on the rain waiting for the door to the school be open, because we would start vomiting from the smell in the passage ... So if something like that happened there too, im not suprised of that spikes. I know they need to sleep somewhere, but that place need to stay clean for regular people, who passing by.
Its the area IN FRONT OF peoples intercoms to come home. Ffs no one wants smelly junkie on a way to the building asking for “a spare change”
Take all that money spent on deterrents and provide a decent place to sleep.
When You’re Inclusive But Still Hate The Poor
If you are slim, can fit your sleeping bag, don't have claustrophobia and are not paranoid about having to run away from thugs in the night, I suppose you could.
Load More Replies...Inclusive? Or you like actual rainbows. How did gays get a monopoly on the visible spectrum?
I must admit I do think it's wrong to assume that everything painted in rainbow colours means it's automatically inclusive.

Load More Replies...So not wanting people sleeping on benches in parks is hating the poor. Interesting...
This could actually be OK if there is enough room for someone under the armrests Wishful thinking, I suppose.
same wih airports ... poor society working against their own need to rest ... somebody help us waking up what we are doing here, please ...
Anyone Else Find This Ironic?
I never knew those mini arm rest were meant to prevent sleeping on them. That's just cruel.
cities have shelters. The problem is, you cant do drugs, drink, and have to actually make an effort to find a job to be allowed there. And many cant have that.
Load More Replies...There is NO IRONY in this! The "decoration" on the back of the bench is from an organization working against homelessness and it has obviously been put there as a protest against this awful treatment of fellow human beings. Take a look at their website: LAScandal.org
They can use the benches at night at least that's what we can give them for now but putting some of that to prevent them to sleep it's so in humane. How I wish they can imagine the cruelty they inflicts to other less fortunate. :-(
They may come to your house to sleep if you keep up that s**t! They would be welcome in my house to sleep
An Eyecatching Response To Mumbai’s Homelessness Crisis
Fark, can you imagine accidentally falling on it. They hate the beggars and the homeless so much they create a hard-core public danger.

Bench In Volgodonsk, Russia
Kadim Akca came to Värnamo, Sweden alone as a young immigrant from Turkey. The first few nights, he slept on a bench in the Åbroparken in the centre of the small town. Working hard, he is now a wellknown businessman, still living in the area. Some years back, he donated a heated copper park bench to the town, depicting scenes from both Turkey and Värnamo, offering a warm place all year round in the same park! Take a look at it here: https://www.svt.se/nyheter/lokalt/jonkoping/turkens-bank-prisas-som-den-basta
See, cultural differences in action here. That was not against the homeless. That was done so that alcoholics would stop gathering, drinking and fighting near that bench.
it's not about hobos, it's about drunked a******s that uses to sit there, litters and shout all night
That does no good for sitting either! Just let'm sleep there for Pete's sake! 😁
This Man Removed 'Anti-Homeless' Devices From Benches And Ended In Court
I'm glad he was doing that and I'm sorry he was taken to court because of such a b******t reason!
Public benches are for EVERYONE to enjoy, not for one person to tent out and hog it for as long as they want. Ok, not homeless, what would you say if some business took over a bench and doing their own advertising or modify it because they want to? Would you sit on a bench that reeks p**s and s**t? If you feel it’s such a social injustice, maybe you should invite them to dinner, your house, in exact clothes they are wearing, bare foot, and with their entire shopping cart full of “collectibles”. There are shelter and services available to them, but they don’t want it because of all the sober requirements. Their families don’t want to deal with them but when they acted out in public or got hurt, all the sudden, their loving families show up and sue cities.
Where do you expect the homeless to sleep? To p**s? To take a bath so they don't smell? In your loving home? I don't think so, I don't think you realise how inaccessible shelters and government help can be, some of these people have mental health problems, or drug addictions and we judge them and say that's why they're homeless but it's the opposite, it's because they're homeless that they become like this.
Load More Replies...I understand that dilema they wanted to sleep somewhere. Its sad to ended up on Street and dont have a place to go. But i also understand the reason why the city dont want them sleeping on bench... First, benches are most likely located on frequently used paths. And they are there for people to sit and rest, not for homeless to sleep. In my country are two types of homeless, theese who want to leave the street ASAP, and those, Who actually dont want to leave, they just going on state office to get free medical insurance from the state, and rest of time they hanging outside the supermarkets, begging for money, drinking a cheap wine. They have several diseases, some of them are highly infectious and caused many problems like rushbor cogh, and someone can get such thing even from just touching something theese people touch before - i get really bad rush to my hand just because touched the door handle after one of them. So again like about the spikes. I understand the reason why :(
It's not that black and white; some sleep shelters are for men only (!), others have limited beds and a cut-off time. Other than that, some homeless people simply prefer to fly solo..

If you're going to do this, then don't hide it as "art" but just admit that you're being cruel and kicking people who are already down
The beggars in Paris harrass you and follow you. Never seen anything like that before. They set up mattress on the sidewalk and send the children after you. If you do it once they are nasty if you can't do it every time
@ethan liu yes because i totally install mines all over my front yard.. also i have my home built inbetween the local elementary school and kindergarden. with rather inviting grass fields.. nothing wrong with this its just my property.

The Worst Example Of Anti-Homeless Architecture I've Ever Seen
Someone trying to keep people away from the door, which I assume is unused. No way those steps are wide enough to sleep on.
Load More Replies...That's not anti-homeless, that's a shut in wanting people to stay away.
I agree, this looks like they are trying to get EVERYONE to leave them alone, or simply stop using these old worn out steps before they are forced to have to replace them
Load More Replies...The owners could kill themselves or their children by tripping on that! How much of an a*s do you have to be to risk self injury just to keep away homeless people!
In this day and age, this surely has to be some kind of Health and Safety violation…can't we use H&S for good sometimes?
These are stairs. Isn't it more to dissuade people from using the door at the top as an entrance?
Man Sleeping On A Anti-Homeless Bench
Many homeless refuse to go to a shelter out of fear. Some because they are genuinely a criminal on the run. But mostly because they have a deep-rooted distrust of anything that remotely smells like it's "the government". Shelters often are government funded.
Load More Replies...I have talked with homeless people about going to a shelter. Here are some of the things I was told: the shelters have biting bed bugs, the shelters have thieves who steal their few belongings, and mentally ill who yell out much of the night making it impossible to sleep. The number one thing they tell me is that the shelters are full before they can get in when the weather is bad, and sometimes when the weather is good. They told me they've given up trying to get a spot, or the conditions are worse than sleeping on the street.
its moments like this that we need to realize how blessed we are...when we think we have it bad...there is someone out there who is having it worse
I saw the other day that outside a church where usually were many homeless slee`ping that they installed a sprinkler system attached to the roofs under which the homeless were sleeping

“The law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to steal bread, to sleep under bridges and to beg alms in the streets.” — Anatole France
Yeah right beside making it unattractive for the homeless, let's render some square meters useless for just anybody... Not only heartless but dumb as sh*t at the same time.
Our city has these to make people use the right pavement/crossing points, plus this is a central reservation; could this be to deter people from crossing rather than anti-homeless?
Can you imagine laying down a motorcycle and ending up on those? Yikes!

When You Wanna Look Inclusive But Hate Homeless People
There are a lot of homeless queer youth who are thrown out of home because they're queer, get out of here with this b******t, this isn't supporting LGBT people, this is just inhumane
Yes, but it could well be that they put a boulder there and that someone else painted it in protest.

This was literally just a decoration. It's a Japanese restaurant going for a zen aesthetic.
Kind of worried about my next trip to pretty much any city cause I think I have overlooked some of these, not realizing what their really purpose was!
that comes out when the shop owner iss too stingy for real design of urban places ... a biiiiig rainbow cat poo in a litter box ... thank god it doesn´t smell ...
this is one reason I am against the LGBT's, another is the use of a Rainbow as it is my last name and I get asked all the time do I support them, my answer is a huge NO. I wish there was something I could do to stop them using the rainbow. The Rainbow is a promise from God that he will never flood the earth again. Yes I don't care for the LGBT community as I don't care what there sex life is about but it is shoved in every bodies faces, but when the straight community do a parade, they are called haters of the the LGBT and are told they are haters. What is the difference in the parade? Nothing. Stop shoving it down our throats we don't care what you are. We are not judging you as that is for God to do.
Get over your abusive relationship and stop trying to push it on other people. You believe in a hateful God who acts like a classic abusive partner. A loving God would never have flooded the earth and killed off humanity in the first place. Not everyone believes in your God, stop trying to force your idea of what the rainbow is on others. Rainbows existed before Judaism and Christianity, and they will exist after Christianity dies off. They're nothing more than refracted light.
Load More Replies...There Are A Few Different Varieties But They All Serve The Same Purpose
I know this all seems heartless, but unless you've had a homeless person take up residence on your property you have no idea how they behave. They are mentally ill for sure, which is why they cannot or will not live among the rest of us. They puke, p**s and c**p in your doorway. They leave huge mounds of trash behind them, with no concern for the environment, when a trash can is ½ block away. They accost everyone begging for money and terrify people with their haggard look. I know this, because I have tried many times to help them. I give them a place to live, and work, and hot meals. And they show their appreciation by refusing to get out of bed and come to work, but collecting trash all around their living space because they don't care about vermin or tidiness or anything else. I even had one kicked out of the Ashram behind me in near downtown Houston decide I needed protecting. I would open my door to leave for work, and there he is sprawled across door.
Instead of doing c**p like this, governments need to provide more resources for people in need.
He took my paint for tools and wrote some bizarre language vertically on all the corners of my house (some kind of blessing or voodoo protection?), which I was planning to only stain for natural aging, but now had to paint. He collected milk form the grocery dumpster and put it in the outside refrigerator, which was under a tarp because I was remodeling a kitchen my duplex. When I said it wasn't plugged in (hello, 25' from the house with no cord in sight!) he then poured all the sour milk all over my grass and flower beds. He tried to cook on the stove too! Outside under a tarp! I had him arrested and there he was the next morning! He pissed right off my front porch, and I'm not gonna tell you where he took care of other bodily functions. He bathed in the hose, and left the hose running all day. Homeless people are problematic.

if this is in a busy public area then I can understand them not wanting homeless people camped out on there all day, especially bus stops and train stations where there are tired travellers coming in and out all day. benches are made for sitting not sleeping.
This One Is In China
Interesting that they chose to sleep at a precarious angle rather then on the walkway.
Not sleeping on the walkway because its China. They are being polite even after spikes and rocks added,
This makes me sad! What if they accidentally move in their sleep and roll down?

Although I think shoving homeless people out is deplorable..I can understand them not wanting a homeless person to sleep on and intake or exhaust vent. It could majorly screw up machinery that's linked to that grate.
This could probably easily be constructed in such a way that it could provide several designated benches with warm air if someone saw the opportunity instead of the problem.

That's a really good point it's easy to forget about. I used to think my campus was pretty accessible (every doorway has a button option, every area with bathrooms has some with extra space etc.) and then I tore my MLC. It took months before I could walk almost normally again and holy heck did I suddenly discover how uneven walkways were, how short the crossing lights are. It's really easy to take being young and able-bodied for granted.

That would be a good reason to put armrests on the SIDE of the bench.

You look at Seattle, where there isn't too much regulation, and there are literal shantytowns on the sides of the highway. It's sad that one of the most successful cities has so many people in such desperate conditions.

It would be a bit dangerous to sleep in the centre island anyway, would it not?
I designed this - this is right off the bridge in Long Island City - one of the highest pedestrian kill zones by vehicle in NYC was located here - this is meant to keep people from crossing at any points other than designated pedestrian crossings.
Doesn't this look more like a Do Not Cross The Street Here measure?
I would think that traditional barricades would be installed for vehicular traffic control. My guess, is that this is to discourage panhandling at that spot.

Don’t see how someone could sleep there if the spikes weren’t there?
I think these are more to discourage bad elements (drug users, drunks, aggressive young adults) from hanging out on steps and intimidating or inconveniencing tenants. rather than persecute the homeless.
I think this person just doesn't want people sitting on their steps. Doesn't seem aimed at the homeless.
At Least It Looks Cool
I don’t know, looks quite comfortable to me, a bit of lumbar support in those curves, provided you sleep on your back.
This is kind of "funny", because this picture was taken in Budapest, Hungary where being homeless is prohibited by the law. So maybe you can sleep on these benches, just the cops will appear...

Oh come on now, do you want a homeless person sleeping at the bank machine when you need to use it. This is pushing the whole thing way out
Who would feel safe using an ATM with a crowd of people hanging around it.
Yaa dont need homeless people hanging out Right Next to the ATM while your trying to take money out.
Even a homeless person knows that ATM's are not a good place to sleep, So sad that the money for the construction of that could've been funded for a meal or a shelter instead.
I think if I owned a business I'd do the same, I don't want it smelling of p**s, s**t and littered and putting customers off. If your all so angry and disgusted with places that do make it hard for the homeless to sleep in their doorways, invite them to sleep in your gardens, shed, apartment, homes, No... I thought not.
This is something I was thinking the whole time, not meaning to be cruel and whatnot
Load More Replies...It's not "discrimination". It's literally the opposite of that. It's not saying "These specific people can't......" it's putting everybody under the same rules. I GUARANTEE you hypocrites wouldn't like some strangers sleeping on your front porch every night.
I have compassion, but as someone who cannot get to my apartment without being accosted by homeless people, without having to step over piles of trash and piles of s**t from homeless people I can sympathize with the people who own the property, have to maintain the property and clean up after them. And by accosted, I do not mean begging for money, I mean threatening you for money, having them grab at your personal items, demanding you give them a ride somewhere. I promise this, none of you who complain about this have to daily pick up piles of s**t left on your doorstep, have to mop up pools of urine and vomit every single day. Aren't afraid to let your kids go outside alone because they will be groped or verbally assaulted. Not every homeless person is this way, but like everything else in this world a few ruin it for everyone.
This is my experience too, in my small town Canadian neighbourhood. The problem is getting worse and worse and a huge chunk of it is the drugs are getting more and more addictive and making people more and more aggressive. I am tired of being threatened, hearing about my neighbours being threatened. I used to have a lot more compassion than I did, but the literal s**t on the sidewalks and the needles everywhere and the threatening behaviour is doing me in.

To be honest I don't know how long he has been on streets but I do know that every Saturday I can find him sitting by the post office and I come deliver him some food, a few bucks and whatever he asked for the previous week - items such as aspirin or hand sanitizer. I am not rich by any sense of the word but stopping to talk 3 years ago has created a great friendship between us. Again I don't know his whole story but every time i see him I am greeted with a huge hug and at least 30 minutes of great conversation. Kindness goes a long way. The homeless are humans. "The homeless are human". "One day it could be you". Perfect! Absolutely perfect! Two sentences that summarise the whole thing. I try to do the same, and many people have told me I'm mad. I'm happy to know I'm not alone. Mad or sane, I know I'm doing the right thing!

Some choose to be though and I'm fine with people making sure they can't sleep where they are a nuisance. In the US however, where you just leave your poor people to die in the gutter, you should be ashamed. Not of these spikes, but because of your ridiculous attitude of 'everyone for themselves' and f**k you if you are poor.
I don't think there's a country in the world who's social security system catches everybody that needs it. Things that make an already harsh lief even more difficult are simpy wrong in any country.

If your all so angry and disgusted with places that do make it hard for the homeless to sleep in their doorways, invite them to sleep in your gardens, shed, apartment, homes, No... I thought not.
This is something I was thinking the whole time, not meaning to be cruel and whatnot

Do you feel you should personally solve every societal problem by bringing it into your home?

Fix the reasons that make people homeless and you do not need any of these. And now do not tell me homeless people are those that are to lazy to work. My own experience is that many seem to struggle with physical and mental illnesses, and addiction can be a factor. The price societies pay for NOT including them again is way higher than admited.
The really sad part is the proportion of veterans is outrageous...

Like everyone else I am tired of this problem but I have no power really to do anything. Except I do- as do you . I have started to befriend the homeless that I see on a routine basis, getting to know them and helping where I can. This is Daryl and I.
