Ever seen a burger falling in slow motion, its ingredients uniformly suspended as they float through the air before coming to land on top of each other with almost supernatural perfection? Well, that’s known as a “burger drop”, and you can find them in virtually any burger chain commercial. Most of them are made using CGI because, well, it’s easier, but Miami-born Cuban photographer/director Steve Giralt decided to do things the hard way. Not only did he decide to make one without Computer Generated wizardry – he actually built an entire machine dedicated to executing the perfect burger drop.

The contraption is called the “Precision Arduino Timing Relay Imaging Controller”, but you can call him P.A.T.R.I.C. “It took about a month to build the original version,” Steve told Bored Panda. “I could only build in-between paid shooting jobs so it wasn’t a month straight.” And as you can see from the video below, while P.A.T.R.I.C took a little time to get things right, the end result couldn’t have been more sublime.

“For the intro sequence of the ingredients we probably did 10 takes to get it right,” Steve told Bored Panda

“The perfect landing shot was achieved on the 4th landing”

“As for the ketchup and mustard collision, we probably did about 20 takes to get that just right”

“Then the last shot was the beer landing and that probably took 10 or so takes”

“I wanted it to have some fun energy and not just feel placed”

“I would love for this project to inspire others to do amazing things like this,” said Steve
