Marek Pupák is a Slovak documentary filmmaker and photographer. Few years ago he started documenting his grandma who became famous amongst the locals and his friends for her signature look – bright blue hair. Combined with her now legendary red Gucci sweatshirt, she’s nothing short of a local fashion icon.

Marek Pupák: “I started documenting my grandma as my personal project. Our relationship is very nice and based on a life-long friendship and most of all – love. She truly is a unique woman. Born in 1935 she lived through WWII, communist regime of former Czechoslovakia, Soviet occupation in 1968 and the Velvet Revolution in 1989. She even witnessed Slovakia electing our first female president, Zuzana Čaputová, last year. She raised 2 beautiful kids and has 2 grand kids, me being one of them.”

“My grandma has taught me a lot. Her good spirit always amuses everyone and she never refuses to help. Ever since I remember she would always wear her “blue crown”. Her stylish blue hair is the center of attention everywhere we go. When I took her on a small trip to Rome, people would smile and greet her by saying: “Signora! Beautiful hair!” Even the security officer in the Vatican Museum asked me to take a picture with his phone of him and my grandma. She’s always natural and sweet and that’s what I want the pictures to show too. Because that’s who she really is.”

“A lot of my friends often tell me about meeting my grandma at a grocery store or in the church. It always makes me happy to see the joy she brings to people, even to those she doesn’t know personally. People greet her in the street and she always greets them back, even if they are complete strangers. She’s a huge fan of the young generation!”

“Beautiful and colourful life truly is for everyone. No matter where you’re from or how old you are. We should cherish the generation of our grandparents and celebrate their lives and beauty as much as we can. This is my way of showing my grandma how much I love and appreciate her and everything she’s ever done for me. Seeing her happy face when she opens the newspaper and sees her own huge portrait in it makes it all worth it.”
