She Vanished Without A Trace, Then A Discovery Beneath A House Led Police To Arrest Her Husband 20 Years Later
For nearly two decades, the disappearance of Jill Maiorca, a 29-year-old woman from Southern California, remained one of the most frustrating mysteries surrounding the mountain community of Big Bear Lake.
She was reported missing in 2007, leaving her family without answers about what had happened to her.
However, on October 28, 2020, a homeowner made a horrifying discovery in the crawl space beneath his property: human remains concealed inside containers.
- Jill Maiorca vanished from Big Bear Lake in 2006, leaving her family without answers about her whereabouts for nearly two decades.
- In October 2020, a homeowner discovered human remains concealed in containers beneath his property, with DNA testing eventually identifying them as Jill's.
- Investigators arrested Jill's former husband, Jeff Maiorca, in September 2026, nearly 20 years after her suspected homicide.
Three years later, DNA testing finally proved that the remains belonged to Jill.
On September 21, 2026, nearly 20 years after her suspected homicide, authorities arrested none other than Jeff Maiorca, her former husband.
Jill Maiorca was a young mother whose marriage had begun unraveling years before her disappearance
Little has been publicly disclosed about Jill’s childhood, education, or how she first met Jeff. By the early 2000s, however, the two had married and were raising a family.
Jill was approximately 27 years old in 2004, while Jeff was in his early 30s.
Their marriage had progressed far enough to involve children, but by October of that year, it had reached a breaking point.
On October 25, 2004, Jeff filed for divorce in Los Angeles County Superior Court.
Whether the separation involved prolonged arguments, disagreements over their children, or attempts at reconciliation has not been publicly established.
The records do, however, reveal that the divorce proceedings continued into the following year.
On July 26, 2005, a notice concerning the withdrawal of Jeff’s attorney was entered into the case.
That procedural development does not establish whether the marriage had formally ended, but it shows the legal proceedings remained active well after the original filing.
By the time Jill disappeared, authorities would describe Jeff as her former husband. Other reporting indicates the pair were either divorced or separated.
Despite how central that relationship would eventually become to the investigation, few details about their lives together have surfaced. No publicly verified account explains what initially brought them together or how their marriage deteriorated.
Whatever had happened between Jill and Jeff before their separation, it was enough that Jill would not live to see her 30th birthday.
In November 2006, Jill disappeared from Big Bear Lake
By 2006, Jill was living in the Big Bear Lake area, a mountain community in San Bernardino County known for its forests, lakeside properties, and vacation cabins.
Jeff also had ties to the area, where he would continue living for years afterward.
At some point that November, investigators now believe, Jill was assassinated.
She was 29.
The exact date has not been publicly released, nor have authorities reconstructed her final known movements. Investigators have also not said where she was last seen, who last spoke to her, or what circumstances surrounded her disappearance.
Those unanswered questions would eventually become central to the case.
According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, evidence uncovered years later established November 2006 as the probable period of Jill’s homicide.
Prosecutors would eventually allege that a knife was involved, although the precise circumstances of the attack have not been publicly detailed. What happened to Jill immediately afterward is similarly unclear.
Authorities believe her remains were concealed beneath a residence in Big Bear Lake, inside a crawl space below the home.
The location would eventually prove crucial.
But it was not a property investigators initially connected to her.
In fact, according to reporting by ABC7 Los Angeles, Jill had no known connection to the cabin where her remains were ultimately discovered.
That left a disturbing question investigators have still not publicly answered: how did she end up beneath a house seemingly unrelated to her life?
Her family reported her missing in 2007, unaware of what investigators would eventually discover
It was not until 2007 that Jill’s family reported her missing from Big Bear Lake.
Authorities have not disclosed the precise date of the report or explained the delay between the period they believe she was attacked and the formal missing-person complaint.
That gap became one of the most troubling aspects of the case.
Investigators would eventually determine that Jill had probably been gone for some time before her disappearance entered official records.
But in 2007, her family did not have the information that would emerge nearly two decades later.
The public, similarly, has also been mostly kept in the dark about the investigation.
As the years passed, the case remained unresolved.
Jill’s photograph would eventually appear in news reports about the investigation, including an image showing her smiling beside Eeyore at Disneyland.
It was a reminder of the woman behind the missing-person case, whose life had largely disappeared from the public record.
Meanwhile, Jeff remained in the Big Bear area. As business records show, he resumed his life working for his local heating and air-conditioning company, known as JM Mechanical, as if nothing had happened.
The investigation appeared to have reached a dead end.
Then, 13 years after her family reported her missing, an unsuspecting resident discovered something beneath his home.
A homeowner made a horrifying discovery beneath his house on October 2020
It was approximately 11:12 am on Wednesday, October 28, 2020, when deputies from the Big Bear Sheriff’s Station received a call from a residence in the 39000 block of Forest Road.
The person calling had discovered “something suspicious” inside the crawl space beneath the property.
Officers were dispatched to investigate, accompanied by personnel from the Big Bear Fire Department. What they found never left their minds.
Human remains had been concealed beneath the house.
According to ABC7, the body parts were inside containers stored in the crawl space. The smell was unbearable, as they were badly decomposed, making immediate identification impossible.
Detectives from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Specialized Investigations Division took over the case and began examining the evidence.
An autopsy eventually determined that the unidentified person had been attacked, and the investigation officially became a homicide inquiry.
But there was a problem. Despite examining the remains and conducting DNA testing, investigators could not determine the victim’s identity. Without a name, they struggled to establish where the person had come from or who might have wanted them gone.
And without that information, finding a suspect proved extraordinarily difficult.
The remains were recovered and preserved as evidence.
But the investigation stalled.
For three more years, Jill Maiorca’s identity remained unknown to the detectives investigating the remains beneath the Forest Road home.
In 2023, a cold-case team finally uncovered the identity of the victim
The next major development came in 2023, when the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Cold Case Homicide Team assumed responsibility for the investigation.
The specialized unit, established in 2008, was tasked with revisiting homicides that earlier investigations had been unable to solve.
Detectives decided to submit the unidentified remains for additional investigative DNA analysis.
It was the breakthrough the case had needed. New testing eventually established that the remains belonged to Jill Maiorca.
San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus later confirmed the identification during an interview with ABC7.
“Through DNA analysis, we were able to determine it was Jill,” he said.
Investigators could now compare the remains with an existing missing-person investigation and reconstruct the timeline surrounding her disappearance.
The connection also revealed that Jill’s family had reported her missing in 2007, even though detectives believed her homicide had taken place the previous November.
Yet identifying Jill did not automatically establish who had attacked her.
Investigators still needed to determine what had happened in November 2006 and build a case that could withstand scrutiny in court.
Detectives turned their attention to Jeff Maiorca, the man who had filed for divorce two years before her homicide
Once Jill’s identity was confirmed, investigators began reconstructing her final years, bringing her former husband, Jeff Maiorca, back into the picture.
Jeff had filed for divorce in 2004, two years before Jill’s suspected homicide. By the time detectives reopened the investigation, he was 53 and still living in the Big Bear area, still operating JM Mechanical.
His professional background soon attracted scrutiny, particularly because of the way Jill’s remains had been concealed.
The circumstances raised a disturbing possibility, as local outlets soon started wondering if Jeff’s work had given him access to the house where his former wife’s remains were hidden.
The San Bernardino County Sentinel examined the theory, looking into whether his company had serviced properties along Forest Road, where the remains were discovered.
Questions also surrounded his possible connection to the homeowner.
Meanwhile, the cold-case investigation was closing in on Jeff.
Jeff Maiorca was arrested on September 21, 2026, nearly two decades after Jill vanished
On Monday, September 21, 2026, Jeff Maiorca’s life took a dramatic turn.
The 53-year-old was in Big Bear Lake, the mountain community where he had continued living and working for years, when his past finally caught up with him.
At approximately 12:10 pm, Jeff was taken into custody near the Big Bear Lake branch library on Garstin Drive.
The location was unusual. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department had temporarily relocated its offices to facilities beside the library while its regular headquarters underwent renovations.
According to the San Bernardino County Sentinel, Jeff may have walked into the temporary sheriff’s office voluntarily, unaware that he would soon be leaving in police custody.
Whatever brought him there that afternoon, the encounter ended with his arrest.
Deputies detained Jeff without incident, nearly 20 years after Jill’s suspected homicide.
He was initially booked into the Big Bear Jail on suspicion of homicide under California Penal Code Section 187(a), before being transferred to the High Desert detention facility in Adelanto.
Unlike the visits he may have made to the sheriff’s office before, this time Jeff would not be returning home.
Authorities ordered him held without bail.
Prosecutors accused Jeff of fatally wounding Jill with a knife
On September 22, 2026, prosecutors formally charged Jeff with homicide.
According to People Magazine, a felony complaint alleged that a knife was used in the attack.
ABC7 also described first- and second-degree homicide allegations, alongside an enhancement concerning the use of a deadly weapon.
On September 23, Jeff appeared in San Bernardino County Superior Court, where his initial arraignment was scheduled to take place.
The hearing was continued until October 12.
As news of the charges spread, Sheriff Dicus credited the cold-case investigators whose work had finally connected Jill’s disappearance to the remains discovered beneath the cabin.
He described homicide investigations as a pursuit between the person responsible and the detectives trying to establish what happened.
“And I couldn’t be more proud,” he said of his investigators.
The department publicly announced the breakthrough on September 24, confirming Jill’s identification and Jeff’s arrest.
Nearly 20 years later, the case against Jeff Maiorca remains unresolved
As of November 4, 2026, no reliable public reporting confirms that the October 12 hearing resulted in a plea, trial date, or other major development.
Jeff has been charged, but he has not been convicted.
The sheriff’s department has also made clear that its investigation remains ongoing.
Detectives Malcolm Page and Sergeant Justin Giles have asked anyone with information about Jill’s disappearance to contact the department’s Homicide Detail at 909-890-4916.
Anonymous tips can also be submitted through We-Tip at 844-909-3006.
The appeal indicates that, even after the identification of Jill’s remains and the arrest of her former husband, investigators are still seeking information about the events surrounding her disappearance.
For Jill’s family, the revelations have at least answered one question that remained unresolved for nearly 20 years.
They now know what became of her.
But the circumstances of her final hours, the alleged motive behind her homicide, and the way her remains ended up beneath a stranger’s home have yet to be explained publicly.
Those questions may eventually be addressed in court.
