Kids can form better eating habits when schools provide them with healthy food, but unfortunately, not all of these establishments are capable of doing so.

There's a notion that students from the US or the UK usually walk to their cafeteria in disdain while their Asian peers are getting served mouth-wateringly fresh meals.

But is this always the case?

To show you that not everything is black and white, we at Bored Panda put together a list of photos that reveal what schools from all over the world put on their plates. Bon appetit! (Or not.)

I grew up in America in the Sixties and Seventies, and we received a home cooked meal in our cafeterias by local, respected dieticians. The food was always fresh from scratch and wonderful tasting. I know for an absolute fact.... that several of my classmates got the only meal they would get that day, at school. Poverty in America was rampant then and it's much worse today. I watched Reagan and the Republicans dismantle the school nutrition program so they could build more battleships to defeat the Russians.... Well... You keep shooting yourselves in the head, and your descendants, because you fall into the hateful rhetoric of the Republicans. The people who vote Republican are the ones getting screwed the worst, but darn it, no darkies are getting free food or health care! Neither are you, dimwits.

And they keep voting for the worse republicans have to offer too. It's about to get much worse in 2022. Manchin and sinema are in the republicans pocket they are a disgrace. We're about to lose all our rights. The stupid republican voting base thinks it's the other way around. They're in for more suffering while they give every dollar to the rich happily.

That's what I am thinking too! Tiny sausage and pineapple kebab are everyone's favorite putlock/picnic food where I grew up! I need to get some rice cake and hotdog to make this myself! I wonder what sauce they used over it

We managed to get in touch with a few folks from South Korea, a country that dominates the top of this list, to learn more about their menus.

One of them is Reddit user u/darkrealm190. "My school doesn't really serve one thing the most because they do a super big variety!" they told Bored Panda. "It takes about 2 weeks before something repeats. However, there are some constants, like they always have rice, some soup or stew, and banchan (side dishes in Korean) and [some] protein!"

u/darkrealm190 said the overall quality of the food was good. "It's definitely not bland, extremely healthy, and widely varied."

In fact, they couldn't even think of how the catering could be improved. "It's as good of a school lunch as anyone could need or want," u/darkrealm190 said. "I would also like to add that the lunch is free to all the students!"

just wanna mention that the school lunch in Sweden is basically a buffet with at least 2 different warm meals, a bunch of different vegetables and bread and sometimes fruit- you can take seconds etc if you want. (all free)

    Cathy
    Community Member
3 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Swedish school lunches usually have two or three different choices of main course, of which one is vegetarian, sallad buffet and bread and butter, water or milk ti drink and sometimes apple or cranberry juice but never soda. There's also special meals for kids with food allergies or special diet due to religious beliefs. Lunches, books, laptops/chromebooks and school transport are all free. The law says school should be equal for all kids, so all should have the same opportunities, so kids can borrow sports gear like skates or skis and music instruments for school activities.

Since lunch is fee free, parents rarely pack lunches. They serve nutritious food instead of being motivated to serve chicken nuggets to keep the volume up. There is always a vegetarian option too. Kids serve themselves the amount they want too eat.

The other Redditor we talked to was u/StiffCrustySock and they gave us a similar description. "There is (almost) always rice, kimchi, and some kind of soup. Then, a Korean-style protein of some kind, most often pork-based ... [but we also sometimes have] 'Western-style' foods like burritos, a slice of pizza, spaghetti and sauce, etc," they told Bored Panda. "There will usually be a fruit of some kind as well."

"Overall, the school's food is excellent, I enjoy about 95% of it. And compared to other schools around the world I've seen, I'm glad to have this quality lunch."

However, u/StiffCrustySock would like a small change. "[They could] probably reduce the salt content and aim for less carbohydrates in each meal. Otherwise [everything's] pretty healthy."

The Redditor also suggested giving Korea's kitchen a go if you find yourself drooling over their pictures. "Everyone should try Korean food if they get the chance. The flavors are excellent."

Takes some time, but it's worth it. First cut the sweet potatoes, then cook them for a very short time (3 min) in hot water and salt and then coolnyhem with ice cold water. Dry them upa nd place them in the freezer for about 2 hours. Fry them in the deep fryer at 170 ⁰C for about 2 minutes and let them cool down. Then dwep fry them again until they are ready (depends on how thick you cut the fries)

    View more comments

You could make a case that the quality of school food somewhat correlates with kids' health. In the United States, for example, the percentage of children and adolescents affected by obesity has more than tripled since the 1970s and in 2017–2018, an estimated 19.3% of those aged 2 to 19 years were obese.

The CDC said that a comprehensive approach is needed to address this issue in schools, especially for elementary and middle school students. Scientists know less about what school-based obesity prevention approaches are effective for teens.

The term 'comprehensive approach' means directing attention to nutrition and physical activity in schools and involving school nurses, parents, caregivers, and other community members (like pediatricians and after-school program providers) in the process. But we are yet to see any meaningful results.

I'm finnish and the school lunch is always in the last week of school. It's usually way better than the other foods here, we even had free cupcakes. What's so wrong with it?

It's likely a district that has prioritized healthy, fresh food. My son's district offers fresh salad bar as an addition to each hot lunch that would have similar fresh veggies options.

Private school most likely. Public schools get funding that government corruption takes away and poor kids end up getting crappy lunches (literally a bunch of bland white rice and some fried plantains). How do I know? Colombian here, and I studied in both private and public schools and am pretty familiar with the system.

I went to a public school in Russia and we were never served anything like this. We received 2-3 hot meals a day (2 if we stayed only for the school day, 3 if we stayed for the afterschool program) and all meals were hot, healthy, and usually quite good. Not sure if the quality has decreased since I was little, but I'm also not convinced this photo is representative of school lunches there.

It is free for the kids. The kids don't pay taxes. Nor should they. Adults like myself should and I'm happy to do so. We get so much from our taxes in Sweden. Too bad people don't realize that.

Its all prepackaged, processed, full or refined carbs in our ross school district. They have the worst food I've seen in 3 different districts we've lived. My kid has been packing everyday for 10 yrs because of this. Breakfast is only cereal and pop-tarts. Its horrible.

When I went to school our lunches definitely didn't look anything like this.. my mom is a teacher and we have lived in California our whole lives, even had some of the same teachers growing up believe it or not, and over here lunches do not look like this at all. They are more like really cheap looking mass production tv dinner style with absolutely no fresh veggies MAYBE an apple on a good day. Rather sad. I always had a pack lunch because of that..and that was true for elementary, middle AND high school here. I am class of 2010.

If you don't slice the apples the kids just throw them away (try biting into a whole fruit when you've got a loose baby tooth), but the school is so understaffed they can't slice the apples or do much cooking at all on-site. So they buy everything pre-made from a food supply company. Pre-sliced apples, veggies from a can, premade chicken nuggets they just need to heat up, salad from a bag. Blame our low funding for not paying people enough to live, it's no wonder they can't find anyone who wants to work there.

Flashback to the 'cornflake biscuits' mum made when I was in primary school. I hated the texture and only had a couple bites. She never made them again. I bought some breakfast bars recently and it was the same thing, but I struggled through, since I spent money on them! Weirdly ANZAC biscuits are fine :)

This is Mexican food: whole-wheat tortillas, frijoles, seasoned rice, beef, fresh salad toppings. Very tasty, but you can get it anywhere there’s a halfway decent cook. That would be a popular meal at my nieces school in Toronto, Ontario.

It was always exciting to see what was on the school menu that day. You didn't find out until it was lunch time. And no matter what we had, our cafeteria always smelled like that awful mushy canned corn. (But I still ate it!)

It’s been a heck of a long time since I did any short order cooking, but if I remember correctly, I could do a dozen of these at a time, on one grill, in 5-7 minutes. Buttery, crispy brown, with melted cheese oozing out as you slice it. Delicious, low effort, and very inexpensive to make. This thing is an abomination.

Pizza day and taco day were the ONLY days that everyone wanted to eat in the cafeteria. On other days, you were not part of the 'cool kids' if you ate in the tacky stinky cafeteria. And you were even more geeky and less cool if you dared to bring your own bagged lunch! School cliques and politics is so dumb now that I look back!

It's been cooked in an industrial microwave. The 'sores' are bubbles which have skinned over and permanently set in place due to the internal heating provided by the microwave.

In Australia you either have to bring lunch and snacks from home or have money to spend at the canteen which is like a small version of a corner shop but in school and selling things like chips (crisps), sausage rolls, mini pizza, ice blocks, sandwiches or homemade style spag bol etc. Most people bring lunch from home coz it's much cheaper.
