Svalbard Global Seed Vault, Norway
Deep inside the Arctic circle, on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen, the Global Seed vault is hidden deep inside a mountain. It is sometimes called 'The Doomsday Vault”, because even in the worst scenario of a disaster to mankind it would preserve the diversity of the world's food crops and restore the plant kingdom. It was built to last around 200 years and withstand earthquakes and explosions. It was placed on the side of a mountain so even if all the ice on earth melts, it will still be above sea level. The vault contains 100 million seeds, a complete ‘backup’ of Earth's food-crop seed at the present time.
Policy is invalid here – even North Korea has frozen its seeds there. The first withdrawal from the vault was recently made by Syria in order to recreate an International Research Centre in Aleppo which was lost to war. It was used to store the genetic material of crops. Today these lost stores have become of vital importance in war-torn and drought-affected Syria.
Make sure you check our article to learn more about the Global Seed Vault!
It's terrifying that it may need to be used someday.
Load More Replies...Do you think they also store opium Poppy and Marijuana seeds? In the event of a global disaster and modern medicine were to be wiped out, both of those plants would be a tremendous help.
They are going to need to update it someday... 200 years comes sooner than you all think
I think most of us think it will come 200 years from now, is this not right?
Load More Replies...Awesome, not terrifying. This is what we humans are capable of doing in peaceful cooperation. Let us have much more of that!
All of the seeds there must be non-GMO seeds. No GMO seeds allowed. They do not check what's in the boxes sent in from countries--it's all done on a good faith system that there will be no GMO seeds included. There is still a LOT of room on their shelves too. And it's extremely cold in there. You can watch videos about the vault at YT, like I did. And the outside of the building is really beautiful at night, all lit up like stained blue glass. Google for images, it's amazing!
Yeah! Norway in first place, whoop! Most terrifying thing about it is the reason it's built. ;)
North Sentinel Island, India
North Sentinel Island is a home to the Sentinelese, which is one of a few tribes in the world that have zero contact with modern civilization.
It is believed that the tribe survives by hunting, fishing, and collecting wild plants, but there are no signs of agriculture or fire.
The first successful expedition was in 1967, lead by T.N. Pandit. Despite that, to this day the tribe refuses to have any contact with the modern world, as they violently drive away anyone who tries to enter their premises. In 2006 the tribe killed two fishermen who accidentally entered their territory but no attempt was made by the Indian government to prosecute the murders.
Now, it is strictly forbidden to enter this island, and entering it may result in death.
Make sure you check our article about this island to find out more!
Well, let them be. No need for modern humans to destroy their way of living.
I get your point, but they are just as modern as us, they just have a different lifestyle
Load More Replies...it's crazy that uncivilized tribes still exist in 2018. considering there's also so much of the earth that's still uncharted it makes you wonder what or who else could be out there.
Leave them alone. they have survived this long without the need for modern technology. No need to spoil their way of life.
Was the first friendly contact made in 1970 like said on this post or 1991 like said in the article?^^
The pics and video in the article are clearly right and there shuld be no doubts about which year is right either. (Btw: The post says 1967, not 1970.)
Load More Replies...I bet you will find that they don't suffer the diseases that common people do. Who are we to push our way into their territory and pass on any of our diseases to them? They are probably ten times more healthier than we are.
Ploutonion At Hierapolis Or Pluto’s Gate, Turkey
Located in the ancient city of Hierapolis (Turkey), it was once a site dedicated to the Roman god of death, Pluto. Ancient historian Strabo visited the place and said that “Any animal that passes inside meets instant death. I threw in sparrows and they immediately breathed their last and fell”. After discovery in 1965, Pluto’s Gate’s dangers were proven to be more than just a myth. Scientists measured the CO2 concentration and discovered that while during the day the sun dissipates the gas, at night, when the temperature drops and CO2 becomes heavier than air, it pools at the bottom forming a deadly “lake”. At dawn, the CO2 concentration 40 centimeters above the arena floor reaches 35%, which is enough to kill animals and even people within minutes. Luckily, the concentration drops significantly with height, so standing by the “gates” would only pose a threat to smaller animals.
Did you know, that they can fly if nothings killing them after „throwing“ 😁
Load More Replies...There is something similar near to Naples, south Italy (where I come from). The place is called Pozzuoli and there is a geothermical "park" open to public. You can see boiling mud's pools, small geysers, the soil is permanently about 50-60º, and from several holes in the ground sulfur emissions are going on since centuries. One place there is special, it's called "The dog's cave". It's a small tunnel, probably not longer that 15 meters, with a natural slope going down for few meters. The peculiarity of this small cave is that the bottom of it is always permeated of CO2 and sulfur emission (from which the stink of rotten eggs). And it's called "Dog's cave" cause small animals are the first to suffer of suffocation and asphyxation when going deeper inside. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cave_of_Dogs
*proven. Serious spelling issues on these "articles/ posts...whatever.
Why would you throw birds in there. Take the words spoken in the past as truth and leave the area be. This place is just creepy looking and through the picture is giving off negative vibes
The Catacombs, Paris
One of the best known mysterious and scary places from all around the world are the Catacombs of Paris. What was first built as a tunnel network to consolidate Paris’ stone mines became a storage for 6 million dead bodies at the end of XVIIIth century. Even though a very small part of these tunnels is open to the public, where you can see thousands of bones and skulls stacked together, 99% of the 170-mile long maze is forbidden to enter because getting lost there is almost a guarantee.
Yet that does not stop people and mysterious secret society members from finding their ways into these places and making trouble for the special Catacomb Police Force, the Cataflics.
Make sure to check our article to learn more about the Catacombs.
"Cataflics" has to be a nickname, because "flics" is a familiar word for policemen, just like "cops". No french police service has enough humour to officially name a service like this ! :-)
"making trouble" ? Just for trespassing, that's all. (And there is a subtle point about the trespassing... To go down, you have to go through a property owned by the national railway company, which is more severe that being underground.) I've been down the forbidden parts several times and people are very respectful of the place. Which is absolutely not the case with the "official catacombs" where skulls and bones are stolen everyday by tourists.
Even the small part open to the public is a labyrinth. But truly awesome, well worth a visit (even if the entrance alone is virtually impossible to find!!)
They need to close it definitely so trash people can't go there anymore to tag the walls and leave their s**t behind them like it's a landfill site.
Poveglia Island, Italy
Poveglia is an island known as one of the most mysterious and creepy places in the world. It all started during the Roman Empire when the island was used to home victims of the plague.
Later, during the medieval era, when the plague returned, the island once again became a home to thousands of deadly sick people. A terrible amount of people were dumped into the ground, buried in the same graves and even burned. People say that the land became so affected by the burned and rotten human corpses, its soil is now 50% composed of human ash.
Then, back in 1922, they opened a mental hospital here. It is safe to say that it did not affect the patients in a positive way, since the island already had a truly creepy vibe to it.
Now, you can still find washed up human bones on the island’s shore due to the horrific amount of humans killed there. With many people saying this place is haunted, no wonder this island is illegal to visit, and we’re not sure anyone would want to go there.
They're maybe not landing, just taking a look because humans (incluing myself) looove to be afraid
Load More Replies...I would totally go there. I don't care if I end up the stupid one who knew better in the horror film, I want to go!
Ma quasi quasi ci andrei anch'io, un po' di relax senza nessuno (visibile) intorno ;-)
Load More Replies...Ghost Adventures on the travel channel went there and conducted a ghost hunt. I remember them discussing the dirt being part human ash and they even revealed a few bones that were not even buried.
It was sold in 2014 for £400k. There have been attempts to 'tidy' it up and I think the owner wants to open it up to the public
Rented for 99 years, for € 513.000 along with two other islands.
Load More Replies...extract from wikipedia "In 1922, the island became home to a mental hospital where a doctor allegedly experimented on patients with crude lobotomies. He later threw himself from the hospital tower after claiming he had been driven mad by ghosts." Well, i think this place can be one of the place on earth with the highest percentage of ghosts
Ghost Adventures did an episode on this island and it was really interesting!
It's already been rented, along with two other islands.
Load More Replies...Mausoleum Of The First Qin Emperor, Qin Shi Huang, China
Located in Lintong District, Xi’an, Shaanxi (China), Qin Shi Huang’s tomb is a place where entry is forbidden. Even though discovered when the Terracotta army was unearthed in 1974, the tomb hasn’t been excavated yet. Opponents of excavation believe that current technology couldn’t preserve anything that the tomb holds, therefore access to it is forbidden.
The really cool part is that apparently every terracotta soldier is unique. They think every one was modeled after a real person.
How do we know they are just terracotta? (Sorry, I just came off of the Horror Gif post)
Load More Replies...Well, this and the tomb has a lake of mercury in it that would poison anyone who breathes the air...
The mercury lake around the hermetically sealed tomb is true, archeologists have done extensive sampling and ground penetrating research. Sampling's of small core samples of the ground are still heavily laden with mercury that it cannot be handled. The terra cotta warriors are worth a visit. I've been twice and would go again. Check out history.com or Nat Geo, there is plenty of research and information about the necropolis. There are active excavations since the 1970s.
Load More Replies...I’ll never understand people digging up remains and thinking it’s okay, just because it’s old. To me, it’s no different than someone digging my granny up :(
Yes, they are life size. The feet, torso and arms are all cast for the same several molds but each of the warriors have different heights due to the different combinations of the molds. However the face and hair are hand detailed and thus, each is different. The top knots the Calvary wear points to the same direction they are guarding. There is a significant one of a general that is gorgeous. You should look it up see the the different details his garb. There are lots of quite interesting tidbits on the construction and meaning of the terra cotta.
Load More Replies...Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, Ukraine
1986 is the year of the tragic nuclear accident now known as the Chernobyl disaster. Due to high radiation levels, every local was ordered to immediately leave the premises and the territory quickly became abandoned.
Now, you can still find abandoned shoes, toys and other possessions left behind because of the rapid evacuation.
Even though there are excursions that allow you to check some parts of the town, there is a 19 mile zone, also known as Chernobyl Exclusion Zone or The Zone.
This territory is strictly forbidden for any access as it will result in radioactive contamination.
Make sure to check our article about Chernobyl and how it looks 32 years after the tragedy.
Paradoxically it became a paradise for wildlife: elks, boars, deers or wolves prosper without humans around them
Ten years ago they did a docu-expose on an elderly Russian couple who refused to move . Self sufficient and still doing vodka shots last I heard .
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3299704/ - great flick about a bunch of old ladies who refused to accept evacuation. Defying the odds, they have thrived there for decades
Load More Replies...You actually can take tours of this area. It isn't completely forbidden. I just wouldn't want to visit, though.
You will get more radiation from the airplane when you are flying to Ukraine than you will get when visiting Pripyat.
Load More Replies...You can do limited tours there now.. Something I definitely plan to do in my life time
@Bored Fox umm, didn’t really think it did, but thanks for the heads up
Ilha Da Queimada Grande (Snake Island), Atlantic Ocean
Ilha da Queimada Grande island is located off the coast of Brazil in the Atlantic Ocean. It is the only home to now critically endangered venomous golden lancehead pit viper. The island is closed to the public in order to protect this snake population as well as protect the visitors, as by some estimates there is one snake to every square meter of the island.
Hasn't the snake population there been shrinking lately since birds are gradually learning to avoid the island?
Surtsey, An Island In Iceland
Surtsey is a piece of land that formed in 1963, after a huge volcanic eruption that lasted for 3 years. Now, the land is only used for scientific research. The main focus of the work is to better understand how an ecosystem forms without any human impact.
There are only a couple of scientists that are allowed on the island’s premises, making it one of a few forbidden places on earth.
One of the main rules for scientists is not to bring any seeds with you. Well, someone did not pay close enough attention to this rule and pooped on some lava. After that, a tomato plant sprouted up on the island leaving the scientists truly mystified. After they realized the origin of the plant it was immediately destroyed, as it would disturb their scientific research.
Make sure you check our article about this island to find out more interesting information!
Could you imagine taking a dump that can change the whole eco system...thats one hell of a turd!
Things to put on your cv: “in 2012 I singlehandedly changed an entire ecosystem”
Load More Replies...I have tomato plants in several places in my yard where I did not plant them. I don't if the birds or the rabbits are the culprits, I am mean accidental gardeners.
"how an ecosystem forms without any human impact" I don't have to do "scientific research" to tell you the answer to that is "perfectly fine". The planet was here long before us and will probably be here long after we've died out.
Unless we destroy it first. Which sadly isn’t the most unlikely scenario...
Load More Replies...Tomato seeds are one of the few things your system can't digest. So, someone didn't 'sneak' a seed in, they just ate tomatoes before they visited the island. While the island isn't 'scary' or 'dangerous' or 'terrifying', I do understand why they won't let people on. It's as a closed experiment as you can get.
The simple fact that even a few humans are allowed on this island invalidates this entire project. Just their presence forms an impact on the developing ecosystem.
"There are only a couple of scientists that are allowed on the island’s premises..." Premises = a house or building, together with its land and outbuildings, occupied by a business or considered in an official context.
Area 51, USA
Area 51 is a U.S. military installation that is located 100 miles north of Las Vegas. It is considered to be one of the most mysterious places in the world since the U.S. government denied its existence until just 2013. Now, it is mostly known for its many UFO conspiracy theories.
The area is mainly used by CIA and the U.S. Air Force as a testing territory because of its remote location. Despite it being a military installation, many people believe that it might be the place where scientists research a crashed alien spacecraft.
Many conspiracy theory enthusiasts visit the nearby territory to Area 51, yet entrance is completely prohibited.
Area 51 is so hyped! All the aliens are kept in area 49. No-one ever visits anyways 😂
I thought the aliens (prawns) were in District 9.
Load More Replies...One day someone will realise just how much money could be made and it'll be turned into an alien theme-park.
I firmly believe that the flying saucer things all came from the USAF testing out circular-wing jets. there were two of them- one was large and intended as a strategic nuclear bomber. the other was more of a test bed. Both were found (unsurprisngly) to be very unstable in flight. usaf-sauce...9cc202.jpg
Put focus on Area 51 and make it the focal point of these theories, and you do the real R&D at another installation that no one know of! AND you hide these things in plain sight, that's how the CIA work! Its smart and simple! Now I don't think they've researched an actual alien ship, but they're working on some very high-tech stuff that would be worthless should the rest of the world know everything developed to defend the US! =/
They are actually working there, there are people who have worked there and died in less than a few months because of the substances they have worked with... I'm more concerned about goes on there not because of aliens, but because of experiments they might have done, that would be so heinous, all faith in humanity would be lost forever...
Load More Replies...You didn't actually go inside to Area 51 you went to a tourist attraction buddy.
Load More Replies...And of course, we all know from TV and films, that if earth were visited by aliens they only ever visit the USA. Imagine being an alien, and thinking we are all like that!! 😆😆
My theory? A nuclear bomb test site for atmospheric testing that has become so contaminated that it poses grave danger to any living things that spend any time at all there. Like Chernobyl inRussia, but many times worse because there was only ONE explosion in Chernobyl compared to many at Area 51.
Metro-2, Line D6, Russia
During the reign of Stalin, a secret system of underground transport was built known as Metro-2.
This mysterious metro system supposedly connects administrative institutions like the Kremlin, Vnukovo-2 airport and General Staff Academy.
It is reported that the tunnels also include apartments and technical rooms. Since the system was not available for outsiders, it is believed to be a secret escape tunnel for high-level officials during war.
The Moscow metro administration denies the existence of these tunnels, yet back in 1994 an urban exploration group claim to have found the entrance to the underground system. Now, only one out of four lines is confirmed to exist, and that is the line D6. Access to this place is strictly forbidden for outsiders and it can only be entered with a special pass.
Check out the following: Cannibal Island, the Kyshtym disaster, Valentin Bondarenko, the Soviet famine of 1932, and the 1948 smallpox outbreak at their bio-weapons lab.
Load More Replies...Or it could be just some abandoned stations down there. There are stations/lines which have been built but never used for various reasons and it's more than possible someone could stumble upon those and fire up the conspiracy theories. But of course, the other version is way more fun ;P They actually do tourist trips showing you some of the abandoned stations these days I think, I really need to check it out some time
The Lascaux Caves
The Lascaux Caves is a complex of caves near the village of Montignac. The ceilings and walls of this cave are covered with parietal wall paintings, representing primarly large animals. It is believed that the age of the paintings is estimated at around 17,000 years.
Back in 1940 the caves were discovered by 18-year-old Marcel Ravidat, leaving many people wondering about their origin and meaning. Antropologists believe that these paintings might symbolize past hunting success, or a mystical ritual in order to improve hunting in the future.
Opening the caves during WWII changed the cave environment. The 1,200 visitors per day, changes in air-circulation, and the presence of light caused irrepearable damage to the paintings, resulting in a closure of these caves in 1963.
Fortunately, they were able to re-create an exact reproduction of the cave and the paintings near the original, known as Lascaux 2.
Lascaux2 was a partial reproduction, Lascaux 4 opened in 2016 with a more complete version (Lascaux 3 is an expostion that travel around the world)
Load More Replies...I visited Lascaux 4 last year. It is so well done it doesn't feel like a reproduction; even my child with special needs said "wow" more than once. And the exhibition includes info about the technology and how it was made, and further reproductions which you can use for photos (no flash allowed in the "cave"). Well worth the trip.
These are beautiful and amazing. Also, Werner Herzog made a beautiful documentary about them.
The same thing happens with Altamira in Cantabria, Spain, there is an exact reproduction of them in an annex of El Museo del Prado in Madrid.
A lot of places are best left closed to the public. Yes, it would be neat to see them, but doing so destroys them.
Yea. We took this all the way back in the 6th grade. Four teenagers found it One of them the One mentioned above
Vatican Secret Archives, Vatican City
The Vatican and the Catholic Church already seem to be mysterious as it is, but did you know they had a secret archive where they store documents relating to the Catholic Church, and some of them can date as far back as the eighth century? The entire archive is so huge it has 53 miles of shelves, and entrance is strictly forbidden for anyone who is not a researcher with a special permission for access. The place includes such documents as information of Martin Luther’s excommunication and a letter from Michelangelo to Pope Julius II.
Angels and Demons actually. Same author different book/movie
Load More Replies...The only scary one really. They have all the lies hidden and the secrets to the catholic sex trafficking ring and nazi underground. Seriously look up the odessa files
What you say, Azure Adams, is partially VERY true...
Load More Replies...Urban legends here in Italy say that in this place there are some "secret rooms" where they keep (unique) books and documents that could be extremely "dangerous" to reveal to the public. Related to what really the Church did in the past and other secrets related to science and discoveries
I love how these articles often fail to mention the things that actually make them scary. While the Vatican Library is incredibly vast, and you CAN indeed request documents... you have to specifically ask for the one document you're looking for. You have to know the specific document you want to see. They can also deny your request. Meaning that there are probably millions if not billions of documents that, for some reason, they're keeping hidden. Why? Just what are they hiding in there?
We have been educated that "terrible" documents have to be destroyed. Weapons, mass destruction system, poisons, virus etc. That is not true. The church always consider that is worth to keep what can be dangerous for the humanity. The reason? just not to wast the human acknowledge, even if can bring disaster to this world.
Load More Replies...90 % of them is probably pedophile-worthy material collected by their f****d up priests, the rest- plans & strategies of how to conquer & control people's mind with the religious s**t!
They have it for sure. But not for the use that we can imagine
Load More Replies...Not all the places in these archives are open to the public. There are MANY "hidden" rooms in there.
Load More Replies...Niihau Island, Hawaii
Niihau is an island situated in Hawaii that is often called ‘The Forbidden Island’. Back in 1864, it was bought by Elizabeth Sinclair and it has been privately owned ever since.
It first got its name back in 1952 when, during the polio epidemic on the Hawaiian islands, it was forbidden to leave and enter the island in order to avoid the disease. Luckily, this way nobody on the island got sick. Now, with a population of 170 people, this island remains one of the most coveted travel destinations in the world, yet only a few receive permission to visit it. People say that even royalty or extremely rich people have to request entry. For example, music legend Mick Jagger was once denied clearance to land his helicopters on the island's premises.
"Mick Jagger was once denied clearance to land his helicopter on the island's premises". In other words...You can't always get what you want!
So Mick Jagger couldn't get "No Satisfaction".

The Kaneohe Marine Corps Base is restricted, but long ago it was forbidden to all but Alii (chiefly class). It is in far Eastern Oahu. The Hawaiian name for this former island (Now linked by a causeway to the main island) is Mo`okapu, which translates to 'forbidden island.'
And there's also forbidden Kahoolawe, used as a target for bombing and artillery for years, it teems with UXO (unexploded ordnance). It's near Maui and Lanai in Hawaii.
North Brother Island, Usa
North Brother Island is a 13-acre piece of land located in the East River, a couple of miles away from Manhattan, New York.
It is a place where over 1.000 people died after a passenger ship sank in the island’s waters.
Later it was a Riverside Hostipal where they treated contagious diseases.
The most notorious resident was Mary Mallon, better known as Typhoid Mary. Mary was the first documented person in the USA to be identified as an asymptomatic carrier of the bacteria that causes typhoid fever. It is believed that she infected more than 50 people with the disease, 3 of whom died. While she always denied being a carrier, she rarely washed her hands while making desserts and apparently spread the bacteria to anyone who ate them.
The island was later abandoned until the 1950’s when a center opened to treat drug addicts.
Now it is a bird sanctuary for herons and other wading shorebirds. The island is currently abandoned and off-limits to the public.
Make sure you check our article about this island to find out more!
Still doesn't answer why its off limits... They could do limited tours like alcatraz and bring in revenue for the birds
Why do birds need revenue? They're already surviving on the island successfully.
Load More Replies...' She rarely washed her hands while making people who ate them' - I really do not understand that...
While making desert (i'm guessing dessert ;-) ) and the people who ate her desserts got sick. My interpretation of that sentence anyways. :-)

Maybe she did while she was in the hostipal

Back in 2011, the Fukushima nuclear disaster struck Japan, residents within 18 miles of the plant were urged to evacuate. It is the second disaster to be given the Level 7 event classification of the International Nuclear Event Scale, next to Chernobyl. Due to its extreme radiation, nobody is allowed to enter these premises, yet one man was brave (or foolish?) enough to go there, without any proper equipment. Keow Wee Loong, a 27 -year-old Malaysian photographer, chose to illegally sneak into Fukushima’s exclusion zone. “It feels like a real-life version of Fallout” – Keow Wee told Bored Panda.
Make sure to check our article about Keow Wee's trip to learn more about the Fukushima tragedy.
This photographer's story was fake. It has been found out that he made all his photos in the so-called green zone where the evacuation order was about to be lifted. He never entered the no-go zones.
Otherwise... Japan is an amazing country!!! GREAT people, food, scenery, tours, mountains, history, culture... can't wait to go back in 2022
Grand Shrine Of Ise, Japan
The Grand Shrine of Ise is a holy or sacred place where they worship Amaterasu, a goddess of the sun and the universe of the Shinto religion. The temple is built without using any nails, but simply joining wood instead. The most interesting part is that the temple is rebuilt every 20 years, honoring the Shinto concept of death and rebirth. It is also a way to continue the long ongoing tradition of building the temple by only interlocking the joints.
Despite the beauty and the holiness of the temple, only the priests and the representatives of the imperial family can enter the territory. So, the only chance to catch a glimpse of this incredibly holy place is through wooden fences, and you can’t take any photos either.
Only the main hall that enshrines Amaterasu is prohibited. Vsitors are still allowed to tour the grounds up to the outermost of the fences surrounding the sanctuary.
I understand that folks want to know. But there is a big difference between "secret" and "sacred"...I hope people honor that. Having an illegal picture of a sacred place really isn't that awesome. Having a sacred place is.
Great. Our summer cottage was also originally built without nails, by joining logs together. It is quite common in Finland. It is very beautiful and healthy way to build. We only worship puppies and kittens at our cottage, but I like the idea of forbidding (uninvited) visitors and (strangers) photographing there.
How come that on another website (https://pop-japan.com/destinations/ise-grand-shrine/) I read: The shrine complex is visited by an average of six million pilgrims and tourists every year. The shrine is actually a huge complex of 125 shrines, but it is centered on the two main shrines, Inner Shrine (Naiku) and Outer Shrine (Geku).
There is a temple complex in Kyoto that is only open to the public for one week out of every year, in November. Few people go there, because as lovely as the grounds are, photographs are utterly forbidden and very few temples are open at that time. The monks enforce the "no camera" rule VERY strictly. /// We were lucky enough to meet an elderly man on the train who told us about it and walked us to the gate. It was stunningly beautiful.
Well I don't believe this is a painting, so it seems you can take photo's
I have a feeling they rebuild it every 20 years because it WAS built without nails. The parallel is cool either way.
Bohemian Grove, Usa
Bohemian Grove is an annual ‘camp’ located in Bohemian Avenue, in Monte Rio, California. Every year around 2,500 elite men participate in this event, that first started back in 1872.
The event invites only the most important figures in the world, such as high-ranking politicians, nobel prize winners, various military officials, also the presidents of elite universities such as Harvard or Yale.
It is said that during the event, the Bohemian Club performs plays and rituals as a part of the tradition.
The Club’s motto is “Weaving Spiders Come Not Here”, which implies that outside concerns are not to be discussed during the event.
To this day the event is strictly male-only as women can only work as employees there. Journalist Jon Ronson described the club as simply immature:
“My lasting impression was of an all-pervading sense of immaturity: the Elvis impersonators, the pseudo-pagan spooky rituals, the heavy drinking. These people might have reached the apex of their professions, but emotionally they seemed trapped in their college years.”
So, basically an out-of-control tree house with a giant "No Girls Allowed!" sign. How embarrassing.
You can find bohemian grove easier than everyone thinks if you live in sonoma or marin counties. They don't have restriction on the air space
Elderly white men with an over inflated sense of there own importance and a tendency for misogyny. How cliched.
" These people might have reached the apex of their professions, but emotionally they seemed trapped in their college years.”' THIS IS EXACTLY TRUE OF ALL THE "ELITES" I HAVE EVER WORKED FOR.
Heck, look at Prince Charles' text to his mistress - he wanted to be her tampon? You are right, many elites spend so much time worrying about being elite that their social skills are those of a young teenager.

So self-absorbed men who call themselves "the most important people in the world". Male-only? Yep, I smell a gay sex club!
You are downvoting because you think I'm against gays? No, I really am not. It's all based on personal experience so when I hear about male-only club I think of European sex clubs for men. :D

Morgan Island (Monkey Island), South Carolina
Morgan Island, located north of Beaufort in South Carolina, is also known as Monkey Island. It got its nickname from the colony of around 4,000 rhesus monkeys living there. However, the population is not native as the monkeys were relocated there from La Parguera, Puerto Rico. As monkeys infected with the herpes B virus started escaping and La Parguera was overpopulated with monkeys, South Carolina offered to relocate the colony to their uninhabitated Morgan Island. Currently, the law prohibits anyone visiting the island for their own (as well as the monkey’s) safety. The only people allowed on the island are researchers working for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), who own the monkeys living there.
I grew up in Beaufort. Everybody knows about Monkey Island. Every other year or so, some idiot forges over there and gets hurt too.
Better watch out for the Ghost-Zombie-Demon Pirate LeChuck while you're there...
There's a RadioLab about this island. It's also the one that has Typhoid Mary.
Why does this have downvotes? Is there someone going around just downvoting for no reason? If so, it's not cool.

Terrifying places? Some places are mysterious, many are forbidden, but calling majority of them terrifying is really ridiculous. Just to make this comment clear, in case they change this stupid title, it was, at the time of my writing: "19 Terrifying Places People Are Forbidden To Visit For A Good Reason"
and some of them are only forbidden for those who don't have a clearance (tourists and such) and there are still a few select people allowed to enter

There's one in my country, Trunyan Island, located in Bali. They placed the deceased on the ground, not burried. And also the suicide forest in Japan should be in the list.
Aokigahara forest isn't 'forbidden' though. While you probably wouldn't want to visit (due to all the rotting corpses and skeletons of the unfortunate suicide victims, and the overall creepy and eerily silent atmosphere), it's very much open for anyone to enter.
