The sign of a ‘good’ scam is that someone manages to weasel away your hard-earned cash from your wallet and you're left devastated. The sign of a great scam, however, is when the victim doesn’t even realize they’ve been swindled. Instead, they sit there with huge smiles on their faces, marveling at what a great deal they just got. All the while, someone’s laughing behind their backs.

Meanwhile, some things have become so ingrained into society that some folks don’t even stop to think whether their money would better be spent elsewhere. Redditor u/efd71f03 sparked an interesting thread after asking the internet about what people “refuse to view” as scams because they’ve been a part of the culture for so long. From engagement rings to Ticketmaster fees, scroll down to check out their most interesting insights. Bored Panda reached out to the author of the thread, u/efd71f03, and they were kind enough to share their thoughts on culturally-embedded scams with us. Read on to see what they had to say.

Not sure if this is intended to be a joke, but indeed it does work. What post WWII economists discovered was that by redistributing wealth from the wealthiest to poor and working classes, wealth did INDEED trickle up. The rich got richer, the poor got richer, the middle class got richer. The 1950s saw the largest growth in the middle class in the history, at a time when the wealthiest paid the highest amount of their wealth in taxes. The problem is that the rich didn't get richer as fast or in as extreme a way as they would have liked. In the late 1960s, we were told we were no longer workers, but rather that we were consumers. And as such what we really wanted was lower prices so that our money would stretch further. Never mind that we would be making a lot less of it. And so this put downward pressure on wages so as to lower prices. This then meant moving jobs to cheaper labor markets, putting even more downward pressure on wages and benefits. Thus the birth of anti-labor movements

45 Examples Of Scams That Have Become Socially Acceptable But Shouldn't Be My grandmother won the lottery, twice. Not huge, but decent, in the tens of thousands both times. Both times (and 10% of her income) she tithed the whole amount to the Catholic church. The Vatican is litterally made of gold and ivory, but they need my Grandma's paycheck? Her lottery winnings? That's a scam if ever I saw one.

I was in Rome and just a few feet from Vatican City I watched priests walk past the homeless (homeless are not permitted in Vatican City and the Vatican police move them off and into Rome) without even looking at the downtrodden they passed within inches of. If you thing the money you donate goes to help people, you're wrong. Also, the Vatican Museum and St. Peter's Cathedral has BILLIONS of dollars of art and antiquities on display (much more in their vaults). If they were to sell a tiny fraction of their collection, they could help millions of people. They choose not to.

She chose to do this, it is not required to attend the church. However, in the Mormon religion if you don't pay your tithing you can't go into the temple, which they believe is the holiest place to be. That's coming from a religion that has 100 billion stored somewhere. Absolutely ridiculous

I'm Mormon. I pay tithing not because the Church needs it. Not because the Lord needs it. But because I believe the Lord commanded it. He has always commanded his people to offer a tithe or sacrifice. It's in the Old Testament (Malachi). I believe the blessings I get, far outweigh the money I lose. I think God asks it of us to show Him that we love Him more than we love money. Yes the LDS church has a lot of money right now. For most of its history it hasn't. And I'm sure there will come a time in its future that it won't. Im thankful the Church has a lot of money in investments and land and not that leaders of the Church have a lot of wealth themselves. They tend to live modest lives. Not everyone chooses religion but I do.

This is a misnomer fueled by televangelists and a small handful of mega churches. The reality is most of Christianity operates on a shoestring budget, using what it needs to keep the lights on and the doors open so it can continue all the good it does. Of course mega churches exist, and it's not a good look overall, but those mega churches are also providing incredible amounts of aid both locally and abroad. When you get into to old/big churches and buildings (Lutheranism, Anglicanism/Episcopalianism, and the oldest, Catholicism). A lot of it has to do with historical significance. Many think the Vatican is some sort of super wealthy central hub/bank for the church, which is untrue (it was actually in the red a few years ago). While the Vatican's archives contain priceless artifacts from throughout human history, they are just that, priceless. Unable to truly be sold either because of how much they're actually worth or because they must remain in museum quality conditions or they would

I think this honestly depends on the church and what they plan to do with it. Some churches (I think) pay the priests and other important people with it, and some use it to build more churches, temples, other things. If what she was donating to was important to her, then I think its fine - Catholics aren't explicitly required to donate tithing anyway.

Religions are memes (in the original sense of the word) - ideas that propogate, like viruses in the minds of humans. They compete with each other, either through conversion or through slaughter. Religions are like living (parasitic) organisms that perhaps at some time in the (distant) past provided some survival advantage to its adherants.

If you have an issue helping others then don't be part of catholicism. It's not that hard. I'm an IT worker and I can say without hesitation that I could easily do my work in four days. Management puts far too much value on "butt in seat" time, and it's a total waste. I'm also sick to death of the whole "onsite work to maintain the culture" mentality. There is NO reason folks shouldn't be able work remotely. The time and cost savings in commuting and the environmental benefits are significant. I am MUCH better off mentally when I'm away from corporate drama and bullish!t.

Redditor u/efd71f03 revealed to Bored Panda what the inspiration behind their thread was. According to them, they felt "annoyed about tipping in the USA" and that's what sparked the idea to start a discussion on r/AskReddit about all the things that people are so used to, they don't even consider whether they could be scams.

In the OP's opinion, the best ways to avoid getting swindled include "getting educated about particular scams," as well as listening to your gut. "Remember the rule, 'if it's too good to be true, it probably is,'" they shared with us.

There are two main issues at work here when it comes to scams that become a part of a society's culture. The first is that people tend to behave in a way that matches what others around them do.

So, for example, if everyone’s talking about the importance of engagement rings and competing on whose is the biggest, shiniest, and most impressive one, you’re likely to feel a lot of peer pressure to conform. We value our status in society. We want to be respected and adored. It’s hard to go against the grain, especially when it comes to traditions because we yearn for social approval. And sometimes, that approval sparkles like an engagement ring.

According to Grand View Research, the diamond jewelry market was valued at 340.6 billion dollars in 2022, globally. Meanwhile, Verified Market Research valued the United States and Canadian diamond engagement ring market size at 28.6 million dollars in 2019. It’s projected to grow to 39.7 million dollars by the year 2027. In short, diamonds are big business.

Not only religious donations. Be careful of the other types of donations you make, too. Some charities seem benign and then you find out they have anti-lgbtq origins and they use the funds to donate to politicians instead of for the charity itself. If you want to help make a real difference, donate to local food pantries, shelters, building funds, animal shelters, etc. You money will go a lot further and is more likely to go to the actual people it can help instead of a slush fund. Or bring in actual items like blankets, food, materials...that way you know for sure what your money went for.

It seems to me that the preachers with private jets and televangalists are pretty much just reading the Bible and telling people how they understand it. I am aware that some people are so lost in life that they need others to guide them/tell them what to do or think. But for most people.... wouldn't it just be easier and cheaper to buy a Bible, read it your way, perhaps meditate on certain passages and/or keeping a Bible journal? I am sure that you can get just as strong messages from the Bible by reading it yourself as you can by listening to some screaming dude on a stage. But I may be pretty prejudiced about this type of Christianity as I am not a Christian myself. So if any of what I just said made you upset in any way.... blame it on the Heathen. 😘

More so since ACA. My insurance was $136/mo and was good insurance with good coverage. Then first change from ACA said insurance can't be gender or coverage specific so maternity was added and my rate went to $198/mo. Still not bad but a 49 year old man has no use for maternity. Then ACA went full tilt and that same insurance went to $1500/mo with less coverage. So I could elect to have insurance or pay my mortgage and utilities. Cheapest insurance available to me? $600/mo and covered absolutely nothing., NOTHING. It simply kept me from paying the $1100 penalty for not having insurance. ACA is nothing but a scam to get votes and provide free insurance at the expense of the working man. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a brainwashed fool.

The second issue is that there is a lack of competition in the market. Ticketmaster has recently received a ton of criticism from music-lovers and high-ranking politicians for their business practices. The company is the world’s largest ticket seller and accounts for 70% of all tickets sold in the United States. Just recently, a Canadian law firm filed a class-action lawsuit against the company for inflating ticket prices for a Drake concert that is due to take place in July.

The BBC reports that earlier in March, Robert Smith, The Cure’s frontman, criticized Ticketmaster because it charged additional fees that ended up costing more than the value of the tickets. When a company has so much power and influence, it doesn’t necessarily prioritize its customers’ welfare. However, many folks don’t have an alternative and continue to use its services.

Bored Panda asked u/efd71f03, the author of the thread, for their opinion as to why so many Americans continue to use Ticketmaster even though it's becoming increasingly more apparent that the company doesn't have its clients' best interests at heart.

In the redditor's opinion, it's because "they either don't care or don't have any other choice."

At the same time, u/efd71f03 noted that all cultures are different, so what might be entirely accepted in one country might seem rather peculiar in another. According to them, "the entire industrial system" could be seen as a scam, however, they pointed out that this is "more a philosophical matter."

Today is National Administrators' Day (April 24) For the occasion, a little song, to the tune of 99 bottles of beer on the wall.... One Administrator is all, he runs the Hospital. Let's open the door, and let in one more, So he can have a pal. Two Administrators are all, but now they ask for more. They open the door and let in some more, And now we're up to four. Four Administrators are all, they're throwing 'round their weight. They widen the door, and let in some more, And now we're up to eight. Eight Administrators are all, they're getting fat and mean. The break down the door, and let in some more, And now, we've got sixteen. Sixteen Administrators are all, with nothing much to do. They build a new door, and let in some more, And now it's thirty-two. Thirty-two Administrators are all, they're growing more and more. They build one more door, and let in some more, And now it's sixty-four.

Sixty-four Administrators, we see they've sealed our fate. They go on a fling - for a new Admin wing One hundred and twenty-eight In sixty-two more verses, they grow for all they're worth. By then the weight of admins, Will equal the weight of the Earth. So never give them water, or feed them after dark. Or they will grow, before you know, To numbers gross and stark.

No but as someone who practices witchcraft, I also hate it. Do I believe it works? Depends. But it shouldn't be sold to the masses as if it's a given that it DOES work. If that makes sense. Homeopathy is one of those things that, if you believe it works great! You can use it yourself. It's definitely not the same as Herbalism like many of the comments have said. I use herbs in witchcraft during rituals for spiritual reasons, but I don't ingest them unless it's herbalism. Salves, Tinctures, Teas, etc. Some are dangerous in high amounts and there's appropriate dosage levels. Licorice Root is what immediately comes to mind when I think of a plant you shouldn't ingest too much off. As for stuff like Aromatherapy, I actually think it works but more on a psychological level. It's good for mental illness. Because your senses are how you perceive your environment so if you make what your senses are taking in more relaxing, I imagine you'd also feel relaxed.

Also adding this story because I find it funny, but I saw an article on a site that wasn't here, but was similar and they had people from various professions anonymously share secrets from their job that people aren't supposed to know. A pharmacist was there and said that people would be surprised how many OTC and Prescription Medication were actually a combination of plants and Salt. She said that they add salt because they can't legally patent a flower that grows in the wild, so they add salt to make the chemical formula or whatever slightly different and then patent that instead. Give it a fancy science name. It's so funny to me for some reason. You never know. Maybe acetaminophen is really just plants and Salt. Or Ibuprofen. Or Your Antidepressants.

Time share should be illegal as well.

Many of us like to think that we’re more intelligent than the average person on the street (hi, Dunning-Krugger effect!) and that we’d never fall for a silly old trick. However, nobody is completely immune to getting bamboozled or swindled, no matter if the scams are large or small.

Absolutely everyone is susceptible to scams and everyone can be a victim. Scammers know how people think and feel, so they create situations where they can manipulate their marks by pretending to be a friend or creating an atmosphere of fear. There are three main ways to protect yourself from scammers: staying calm, keeping a tight grip on what info you share, and educating yourself.

First of all, it’s all about being in control of your emotions. The more you rush, the more likely you are to make a mistake you'll later regret. If you get a call or a message from an unknown number about a loved one being in an accident or that your bank’s shutting down your account, for instance, you have to proactively slow down and prevent yourself from panicking.

Get in touch with your family, friends, or neighbors so they can offer you another perspective. In our experience, two heads are always better than one, and a friendly local can prevent someone from falling prey to scammers. In the meantime, don’t click on any suspicious links, and don’t lose your head. Often, if something sounds too good or too awful to be true, it probably is.

This isn't a scam. Keep in mind that property owners pay property taxes, and that goes up if the market value goes up. If landlords don't raise prices in response then they lose money.

I disagree on this. Even fruits and vegetables increase in price due to their own market. It’s fair for rents to rise if the property at the time is deemed more desirable. It’s not a crime to be a landlord or an investor.

Of course rent changes due to market value never happen when property values go down. Just like gas - oil prices go up & gas prices go up, oil prices go down & gas prices stay the same

So. Much. Even with upgrades...I would rather my rent not go up 200 dollars. So you can get rid of the dog spa and fire pits, thanks. Somehow we will survive without them. And I mention 'dog spa' because the last place I lived hiked our rent 200 dollars for this reason. And the 'spa' was literally a small room with a little block with a shower massager attachment on the wall and a leash holder hook so you can keep them in place while you wash them. Also, only about 8 tenants out of 30 had a dog.

My first home was in an upscale trailer park owned by the original owner. It was really a lovely community. The owner died and it was taken over. We were told within months that any trailers an arbitrary amount of years old would have to be hauled off when when we left (not the original deal we signed) and then our lot rent was almost doubled due to maintenance. We were given several pages of 'improvements' we had to make....including repainting homes that had been painted less than a year before. These 'improvement' were only enforced randomly. They cancelled our contract with the city to get garbage picked up and rat infested dumpsters appeared all over the park. One day there was a whole couch in the road that someone had come around and tossed. The fences along the road that were the parks responsibility fell apart and were never painted or fixed - eventually some caution tape went up there. Park maintenance my a*s.

Yazbut. On problem is that unlike best-selling novels, most textbooks are used by a relatively small number of people, even though editing, typesetting, and even printing are often very similar. The cost of materials (e.g., blank paper) is relatively trivial. I think that with the advent of e-readers and computers, the days of reading from dead trees may be coming to a close. I've probably got close to 3000 books at home, accumulated over lots of decades. My kindle easily can hold much more. And we should praice Prof. Censorshipsucks for his/her approach.

Well in my country, University is free if you go to a public school, and expensive if you go to a private school. Mostly, the public schools are well respected, and the private schools are seen as playgrounds for rich people who weren't smart enough to get into private school (there are exceptions, Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro is an excellent school, even though it's private. BUT not as many Brazilians will go to university, as say Americans. For instance, I believe something like 41% of Americans 18-21 are enrolled in college. But that number is only 18% in Brazil. It's much harder to get into college in Brazil, but you also have lots of alternatives to college as well. Lots of vocational and trade schools that are also covered. Also, it's possible to go to trade school in something like accounting, then go back to college in the future.

The knowledge is there, AI is there, DOE could just certify AI to teach for free, which would help give people something to do once AI first takes all the intellectual jobs, then once given hands takes all the physical jobs.

Should be free. You give it back to society.

Secondly, keep a tight lid on what information you share with others, especially strangers. Don’t give out any details if you can because a crafty enough swindler can use it against you in the future. That can also mean cleaning up your online presence so that others have less raw data to work with.

And finally, it’s vital to stay up to date with the latest scams. At least in passing. Read the news, talk to your friends and colleagues to see what’s new. Scams are something that will continue to evolve until the end of humankind as we know it, so never have the illusion they’ll stop at some point and we’ll live in a scam-free world.

It’s a constantly ongoing fight against swindlers who adapt to an ever-changing world and find new ways to trick the vulnerable, naive, greedy, and scared. Meanwhile, the internet has given criminals new tools to do this. What's more, it's easier to trick someone when you never have to meet them face to face and look them in the eyes...

Religion can be used to harm people yes, and I’m not excusing that. But as a Jewish kid, I love my community, and of people was to believe in a higher power, that’s up to them. I personally don’t believe in god, but some of my family does. HOWEVER, religion is not an excuse to treat people like s**t. And don’t get me started with Christian Mega Churches. I do believe a lot of religion is very corrupt, but believing in a higher power and making a community out of it is not inherently bad.

I understand what you mean by this. I think the reason many people are skeptical about religion (not that there is anything wrong with that!) is because the people who abuse the fact that they are religious are the loudest and most obnoxious people.

The problem is not so much religion itself, but organized religion. Organized religion is to spirituality and morality what a home owners association is to a nice neighborhood.

Both the system and the corporation of that name. There was recently a hack into the UnitedHealthCare computer. For some reason, they've not been "able" to rectify it yet, so many physicians, hospitals, pharmacies, etc have not been reimbursed. Patients have lost access to life-sustaining medications, and many medical practices are in danger of closing. 45 Examples Of Scams That Have Become Socially Acceptable But Shouldn't Be I think most day to day things are now scams to a certain extent. I mean if you look at a scam as something that’s in place to take unfair advantage of a person, then most facets of life are scams. Even the most innocent concepts and programs can be viewed as scams, look at things like food donations to help the needy, maybe on the surface it’s not a scam… but it’s in place bc the way the current system is setup, it’s taking advantage of people and forcing others to step up and support them.

Local power utility (AEP) mails out a thing at least once every 60 days telling people they need incoming line insurance. Of course the notice contains info on call XXX company. Fact is, line to the meter is the power company's responsibility and past the meter is covered by homeowners insurance. That is a scam if there ever was one. Guarantee either AEP owns that insurance company or get s a very healthy kickback on every policy.

The tipping culture has grown into something that is becoming a major problem. Tips were a thank you for going above and beyond, now the worse service people throw big fits if they don't get at least a 15% tip. Most employers are now paying at least minimum wage and anyone who accepts a low wage expecting tips needs to make sure they provide a service that earns a tip.

45 Examples Of Scams That Have Become Socially Acceptable But Shouldn't Be The concept that you work from 16 to 18 years of age, until 65-70 and somehow anything in between that is wrong. There is too much s**t interconnected to keep people slaving away only to blink and one day you’re 60. Before someone tries to justify “well you should live within your means” or “save better”, realize that’s part of the problem. The only reason the retirement age keeps getting pushed back is to keep people working as long as possible since the life expectancy keeps going up. Imo.

The retirement age in the US is only getting higher and the fact that our whole lives are meant to be slaves to the capitalist 1% just to “earn” a few years at the end before we die to enjoy is a scam, especially since there isn’t gonna be a whole lot of enjoy in a few years of global warming isn’t counteracted. And on the same sorta topic, the common idea that you “earn a living” suggests that by default, the people with the money don’t think you deserve to live without working for them. Just food for thought. 😅 edit: looks like I summoned all the boot lickers. For the record, none should be a billionaire. I don’t care how much someone works for it, (or doesn’t in most cases) all money after that should be used to make others lives better. This world shouldn’t have billionaires and people living in poverty at the same time. It seems like all human compaction and morals have been thrown out the window with these people.

Both my parents are in their mid to late 70s and unfortunately because of the economic crisis in 2008, my dad lost his business and all of their retirement money and savings. They had to start completely from scratch after my dad declared bankruptcy, they are both still working and I wish I had the money to give them so they could retire, it kills me that they still have to work at this age.

Two days ago a friend of mine dropped dead of a heart attack at work. He was in his 50's, and I quite frankly can't think of a worse place to die. It really bothers me that the last thing he saw was his place of employment.

so in total life is basically you are born and you get 4 good years of doing squat - then go spend 13 years at school - without higher education - then another 40 to 50 years of working in order to retire with some money - but not enough- then if you are lucky 20 years of doing nothing so we will say 90 years of life you maybe get 20 - 25 years where you are not expected to do what others want you to do. 65 years.....more than 2/3 of your life is b******t WTF how is this ok

I'm 62 and really like my job. At this point in my life I have no desire to retire as I fear that retirement will lead to me aging faster. Don't know if there's any validity in this but you do read that keeping working will keep the mind sharp into older age. Hopefully that's right because I plan on working until at least 70 if not longer.

Any type of OTC vitamin supplement in the US is a scam. Supplements are not regulated by the FDA, so there's no way of knowing whether you're getting what is promised, or whether the vitamin in question is even in a bioavailable form. If you truly need such supplements, you should get a prescription from your doctor. (OTC Vitamin D supplements do absolutely nothing for me, but my prescription Vitamin D is a miracle.)

It's about to get much worse. The Supreme Court is deciding whether states have to abide by the results of the election when selecting electors. It will be totally possible for the majority of Pennsylvanians to vote for a Democrat, but the gerrymandered Republican state legislature could just decide to send Republican electors instead. All they have to do is claim that they think there is a possibility that there may have potentially been a small likelihood that somebody somewhere considered maybe doing some voter fraud. They won't need evidence, just a theory.

Should be one person one vote. Doesn't matter what state, city, county you live in, you get a vote, the person with the most votes from the entire nation wins. Everyone gets an equal opportunity to elect POTUS. Let Hawaii vote the day before. Zero votes counted until ALL the polls are closed.

The electoral college was intended to make cheating at elections more difficult. one could manipulate the votes in a few large states and pull off a win Using only the raw votes would make the big states the target for campaigns and leave all the small states as meaningless. Currently getting small states really does add up. Ask any republican.

Property taxes are used by your local municipality to pay for workers to do things like remove garbage, fix the roads, fix the street lights and road signs, etc. There is a point to them. The problem I have with property taxes is that churches are exempt and schools aren't, in my country. I would like churches, especially evangelical megachurches, to pay taxes. Those guys are already millionaires/billionaires. SAfrica.

I don’t completely agree with this. You are not paying your landlord’s mortgage, you are paying for a place to live. I am genuinely confused by the feeling that renters have that paying rent is a scam of some sort. Is there somewhere that people live for free? I see comments like this often and I don’t understand them.

YOUR PROPERTY TAXES! If you live in a town or city you will pay property taxes to support the town or city.

no, the scam is if/when they increase your property values (every 3 years where I live) despite me not having done a thing. Why do I have to pay more taxes just because some yahoo down the street sold theirs to idiots willing to pay any price. That's the one thing California does right - the taxes aren't increased until it's sold.

    RafCo (he/him/ele)

2 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

This really depends on where you live. Where I live it's every 10 years, or when the property is sold. In California it's only upon sale of the property. But even where I live, I could petition for a lower rate, if I can claim undue burden. I personally cannot, but I know people who have done so, and gotten a lower rate.

Property taxes are not "paying for what you already own." The value of your property is assessed so that your contribution to the community in which you live can be calculated. That contribution supports public schools, public works, and the like. I don't complain about paying property taxes because I want my community to have good schools, snow plowed, roads fixed, etc. That shît isn't free, you know.

In the USA property taxes are a major reason housing costs keep going up, local governments have an incentive for them to continue to rise, since they'll collect more tax dollars.

Wrong. The actual value of your assessment does not determine how much you pay. It determines your slice of the pie. So, if all housing goes up roughly 10% nobody's taxes paid change. The amount you pay then depends on new taxes and voter approved levies.

Right. Ronald Reagan put in tax cuts, mainly benefiting the rich, that tanked the budget. So to regain revenue, they had tax other thing, because they sure weren't about to take away those tax breaks from the rich. One way they found was taxing Social Security benefits. That's why GOP stands for Greedy Ogliarchical Parasites.

Some companies don't require the HS DPLOMA, but to get in the door, it's best to have your HS diploma or equivalent. Carbon offsetting. Millionaire wants to offset his carbon use so he donates a percentage of his fortune to a climate charity who promises that every dollar he spends will allow him to continue to pollute at the levels he does. Half of all these carbon offsetting charities don't actually reduce carbon emissions... or if they do they exaggerate by how much they do it. So if a person gives $100K to one of these charities and they don't reduce emissions by the levels they say they do.... do the rich person still have to give more money or can he just pretend that he's done enough?

The stats themselves are a lie. As with any stat, they rig the questions or data to achieve the answer they want. I get an email from my power company every month taking about how inefficient my home is compared to other. They claim I should only be using 900kwh. I want to see someone live in a 3600sq/ft house and only use 900kw. And you won't find a more energy efficient house without starting from scratch. I've made all the changes possible without gutting and starting over.

One year when Valentine's Day was on a Saturday, a female co-worker got flowers at work. This older woman scowled and said, "My husband better send flowers to me today if he knows what's good for him." The female co-worker said, "My husband sent me flowers today because it's my birthday. Tomorrow, is Valentine's Day and he and I will exchange gifts then. By the way, what did you get your husband for Valentine's Day?" The older woman got all huffy and puffy and literally could not form words into a sentence. The younger woman said, "You still have time. I mean, it is tomorrow and most stores are open on Saturday." On Monday all the guys at work purposely bragged about what their wives got them for Valentine's Day. As the guys were going on and on the older woman turned to another woman and said, "Everyone knows Valentine's Day is for men to appreciate the women in their life." That woman said, "No, it's about celebrating your love for one another. I get my husband a gift every year."

Aw, I like Valentine's Day! In Japan, on Valentine's Day, girls give chocolate to boys. Then, on March 14, boys who received chocolate give a return gift to the girl who gave them valentine's day chocolate. As an American in Japan, I do both. I give Valentine's Day chocolate to my wife and my mother-in-law, and then give more on White Day! We all share it anyway, so it doesn't matter. More chocolate for everyone!

Private health insurance. The layer of expensive bureaucracy and ludicrous profits make healthcare unaffordable for many and clog up emergency rooms, which jack up rates to subsidize those who can't afford the often unnecessary level of treatment. But less expensive family doctors won't see you without insurance.

I actually have supplementary insurance here in Japan, and I love it. When I had surgery, the supplementary insurance paid the bit I would have had to pay, and also paid for time lost from work. The first time I had surgery, I actually ended up about $200 richer than before the surgery! The second and third times I had surgery, I think I only paid out of pocket about $400 each time. The first was in-patient care (skin cancer), but I had to keep going back for check-ups. The second time was, I think 5-6 days in the hospital. I have to say: I love the fact that a hospital stay here in Japan doesn't bankrupt me.

There's a relatively simple fix (that will never EVER happen in this universe): Make every member of Congress go on Medicare or, if under age 65, a "standard" private insurance plan. They would very quickly legislate requirements that the insurance actually work. Maybe even a national health plan. Some 25 years ago, a colleague of mine was taking care of a former Congressman, who then became governor. Since he had lifelong free, unlimited insurance, he told the doc (a cardiologist) to double his usual fee, since the insurance would pick it up with no deductable payment on the patient's part. The cardiologist did, and the insurance did. I won't mention the late Gov. Lowell Weicker by name, though. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lowell_Weicker

And you'd better hope the doctor, x-ray outsourced company, anesthesiologist, etc are all in-network or else you'll have big surprise bills, even if you had no choice over who walked in the room. But no ambulance company is ever "in-network" so don't expect decent coverage there.

Had a patient with brittle diabetes have a severe hypoglycemic reaction in church. 911 (emergency number) was called, ambulance arrived, gave her glucose and whisked her 1/4 mile to the local hospital. A few weeks later, she received bills for thousands of dollars. Turns out, the ambulance was "out of network" and since she was transported in an out-of-network ambulance, the ER visit was disallowed, so she had bills for several thousand dollars. The patient was a RN-CDE (certified nurse & diabetes educator). We had to take this to the State "Managed Care Ombudsman" to get the insurance to cover this. Took a couple of hours of work, but it was a grudge match giving me (and the patient, of course) genuine satisfaction.

Dental Insurance is the biggest scam. The premiums total more than the cost of annual cleaning and x-rays, which you then get for "Free", and then there's an annual cap on payment, worth about 1/2 a tooth crown. Better to just put your premium dollars in a cookie jar.

Yes! The only insurance I have is what I am forced to have (i.e car insurance or life for the mortgage). Otherwise I wouldn't pay it. My Company offers private health care and I used it ONCE. Treatment was terrible..had to HOP to an xray room with a suspected broken foot, doctor fat shamed me, receptionist was rude! Then the insurance company took MONTHS to assess my claim and then rejected it so I ended up paying €200 out of my own pocket. Compared to NHS when I had another suspected broken foot (i'm clumsy! Was badly sprained both times) they gave me a wheelchair when I was in triage, the doctor was kind, free crutches and didn't pay a penny. The private health cover costs my company thousands for just mine per year and is money down the drain imo. Such a scam!

Or when you're forced to get insurance that doesn't cover catastrophic care. I was hurt severely in college and was in the hospital for almost 7 months. I was forced to use their insurance and not my parents'. They only covered up to 20K. I went into bankruptcy because of it. If I could have stayed on my parent's insurance, it would have covered all of it. College insurance is a total scam. In some cases, you're only allowed to go to their health care services on campus and if you go to your family doctor they won't cover the visit. Not sure if you've ever been to the health clinic on campus but there are literally medical students working there.

That's the problem though, electric cars just will bring about different problems - better in the short term maybe. Yet even down to the level that in my close there are only 12 houses - if we all have an electric car we then have problems with provision due to the infrastructure (so electricians tell me, I am NOT an expert!!). I agree what we have now can't carry on as it is. We need other answers.

Cobalt also is so expensive that modern batteries either don't need it at all anymore or just very little bit. Plus car batteries can be recycled 90-99% so once the materials are mined they'll stay in circulation. Something that doesn't work that well with petrol... So why is there no recycling yet? Because there are not enough batteries for it to make profit. A battery can be used 10+ years in the car and after that another 20 years as a storage battery for buildings or grid safety. So unless they really break it takes 30 years for a battery to go into recycling. That's a pretty long time.

Even if the pollution/worker ethics are the same for both oil and batteries, electric cars don't spew pollution into our atmosphere and lungs like petroleum engines do. It's the lesser of two evils.

Its the less worst choice. Not choosing individual automobility is key to change. But you are quite focked if your whole country is infrastructured by car lobbyists and doesn´t provide functioning public transportation or good car sharing systems. And a lot of people base their whole personality on vroomvroom..sadly.

This right here is the correct answer. We need more public mass transit, more walkable/bike friendly transportation infrastructure. Electric vehicles are better than Internal combustion engines even when you factor in everything like cost of materials and manufacturing, source of electricity, etc. but even if we switched all cars in the world to electric, we'll still be headed in the direction of a crumbling climate due to energy/material demands.

Battery technology is still somewhat lacking, but the principle of electric cars is reasonably sound. Electricity is one of the few clean forms of fuel that we can actually store for later use. If we can generate that electricity cleanly as well, then we can dramatically reduce pollution. The problem is that the technology is still not there yet, but we are going to be forced to adopt it anyway.

Isn't the UK in Europe? LOLL... Anyway rest assured that we in "Europe" get to drink tap water here and there. In my country some of the tap water is actually sold to idiots in plastic bottles with fancy names on them.

My memory is the garden hose water from my childhood. Back when there was the perception that it was safe for young kids to roam the streets unsupervised. In the dead of summer, when school was out, and parents wouldn't let us play in the house because of the mess we'd make, neighborhood kids would use their imaginations to explore our surroundings and use our imaginations to make up games and seal lifelong friendships. The weather would teeter around 100 degrees, and a garden hose in anyone's yard was fair game. We'd take turns slurping down the refreshingly cold water and spraying ourselves down before continuing our exploits. I've never found bottled water that rivaled the absolute joy we found in hose water.

A number of years ago, analysis showed some lots of Perrier were contaminated with benzene! So, enter "Perrier light - only half the benzene...." Below is a quote. I don't know how they can say "No one suffered" - too early to tell. No one suffered as a result of drinking the benzene-contaminated water but Perrier recalled 160 million bottles from 120 countries at a cost of over $250m. Within 18 months, its market share had declined to 9% in the U.S. and dropped from 49% to less than 30% in the UK.

It could be debated if this really is still Catholicism. It is centered a lot on things like political conservativism, mysticism and a hyped-up veneration of Virgin Mary that some might find cult-like.

A religion is just a cult with mainstream acceptance. But that said, the Roman Catholic Church is as was Rome, and the Pope is her Nero. There were factions within the church, as embodied by movements like liberation theology, that have long advocated for the poor. Those movements are often squashed or they are excommunicated from the church (just ask Martin Luther).

My boyfriend and I have been together for over 10 years. Neither one of us have the urge to get married, and especially not having a wedding. The only thing we were concerned about was what if something happened to one of us and we aren't able to make decisions for yhe other. So we filled out documents saying the other has control to blah blah blah. So we're good for now

Even worse: There are US states when, as long as the bride is a minor, the consent of the bride is not necessary for her to marry, it is enough when her parents consent. We are not talking immigrant families here, but mainly conservative christians. For example, in Kansas a girl can be married at 15, if necessary without her consent. As the spouse usually is made her legal guardian then, she has to wait at least until she gets 21 to be able to file for divorce or even leave. This sounds completely made up, but unfortunately isn't: see https://www.unchainedatlast.org/ or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Child_marriage_in_the_United_States for information.

Marriage isn't the problem here, and a 'classic' wedding doesn't need to cost anything. The US wedding industry is what you're talking about, and that's a choice, not a requirement.

We got married at the time because it was the only way we could be together. Him being from a very poor country, he could not even obtain a tourist visa to come and see me. Moving to his place was a no go because there was no way we would be able to make a decent living there. There was a dictator ruling the ountry at the time. So we got married because according to the law at the time that forced Immigrations to grant him a visa. I never wanted to marry, never saw the point of it, but there you go.

Seems to me, the more expensive the wedding, the shorter the marriage. The crazy costs come from those women who want to make "their day" just like the one they've "been dreaming about since [they] were little girls" (insert gag sound here). They never mention their future spouse...because they're more in love with having a wedding than they are with the groom. My husband and I had 100 guests at our wedding for a total of $2k. Granted, it was 25 years ago and it wasn't fancy by any stretch of the imagination...but were still together and that's what's most important.

My wedding outfit: Less than $100. My partner's: About $300. Rings (all of them together): $1,400. Marriage License: less than $300. Food for the barbecue is my folks' backyard: $250 because it was immediate family only. If you choose to have a big wedding, that's on you. No one can "force" you to have a big wedding. They can force you *into* a big wedding, but only if they are the ones paying for it. At that point, you had over the reins and say, "Have at it. So long as I marry my SO, you can do whatever the heck you what for the party. Don't ask me to participate more than I have to. Don't ask me to fake enthusiasm. This is what YOU want. YOU be enthusiastic."

I was married by a progressive Reverend in the garden of her home. We chose to have a non-religious ceremony, but she would perform whatever type of ceremony you requested. The total cost was $50 USD. No family or guests. Just us. Her dog and cat sat at our feet while we exchanged vows. That was a cute surprise.

My parents married during WW2. There was a (no surprise) scam in NYC. All the Catholic churches would charge members of the US military the equivalent of more than a month's salary to perform a wedding. So they became Lutherans, and the Catholic church lost paying customers. Guess I'll have to check a ouija board to see if they went to hell after living in sin for almost 70 years.

ATM surcharges are for using a non-bank atm. You're taking money from Bank of america and you have wells fargo. I don't understand why this is some big offense to anyone. If you go into a restaurant and sit down with a bag of take out from another restaurant, they aren't going to let you sit there for free while you eat the bread. If you use your own bank's ATM and get a fee, that goes toward upkeep of the ATMs and the 3rd party servicers who stock them. Banks don't generally stock their own atms with money. It's handled by a 3rd party to avoid theft. So Brinks or another armored service would do that. It's also why if you deposit a check at an atm accidentally or the card is sucked back in, we can't just 'open it up' for you to retrieve it. Most checking accounts are generally free to customers with few exceptions and they're allowed to make money. 9 times out of 10, problems in people's accounts where fees are incurred can be attributed entirely to their own behavior.

Tap and go is a scam visa and mastercard built. 1%plus for them....yet the system they use is free and was built and developed in australia as free...called eftpos. Electronic point of sale. It was build for atm cards and was hijacked by credit companies who bought shares. And duplicated around the world.. they took over atm cards which are all visa or mastercard too so they clip a fee each time.

45 Examples Of Scams That Have Become Socially Acceptable But Shouldn't Be Prom School sports School rings All the things above require money spent by young people (by proxy, their parents). It's all what's known as "induced demand". When you get can't get money out of adults, you move further down to their kids. Saturday morning cartoons had commercials and employed the "nag effect" where the kids nagged their parents to death to buy them the toys that were advertised. With "important" things like prom, sports, rings, for older kids, these are all a more nuanced or subtle form of the nag effect. By promoting this concept of "school spirit", kids feel compelled to be part of the in-group and do what everyone else is doing. The schools condone it, they sponsor it, and the businesses that spring up in the periphery around it reap all the rewards. *And they heavily gouge these kids (and their parents).* Dress and suit rentals and stores. Limo rentals. Sports supply and equipment stores. Jewelers who sell the rings. All of it heavily marked up, of course, because the kids **must** have these things. So now everyone is told that if they don't go to prom, that's so sad. If they don't get involved in sports or do other things, that's so sad. If you don't get a school ring, that's so sad. Although I think the school ring is started to go away, right? I say all of this as a former photographer who knows very well the demands of school seniors and their photos (I don't do them, it took one or two to make me hate it). They couldn't care less if it wasn't for instagram and the entire industry feeding off this need for validation. I mean, we didn't when I was a senior. Oh and don't even get me started on weddings...

And it's gotten even more out of hand now. When I was a kid and played little league softball the team provided all the equipment except your glove and shoes. Now, all the kids come to school with at least 2 bats, their own batting helmet, and some of the catchers have all their own gear. It's ridiculous how much money parents must spend on their kids' sports, especially when they are still growing and that equipment will have to be replaced almost every year.

Prom has always been a big scam - it isn't just a dance, no, it is an AFFAIR. $100 tickets, then an overpriced dress that barely covers them, rented tuxes for $$$, must have limo etc. Sports is the biggest scam in schools. It has ZERO to do with education. It caters to the elite athlete whose parent has been paying for private lessons/private teams since the child was 5. Schools don't teach the sports anymore, so if you don't know how to play, you won't get on the team.

it is like a commemorative ring of your graduating class. I don't know if this still exists. Feels like a very old thing, like from the 1950s or 1960s that you would hear about people with a "class ring" and they would give it to their sweetheart or something. Some colleges still have it (West Point in the U.S. is an example, which is why West Point graduates are called "ring knockers" in the military")

Purchased a quality (long lasting) brand name microwave for $225 at Best Buy a year ago. Every other month I get an extended warranty request that I purchase their 3 year-$185 on the $225 microwave. I rather buy another NEW same quality (if possible) microwave for X amount of dollars in the future if my current appliance fails within any 2-3 year period (it shouldn't fail within 36 months of normal usage based on the microwaves I have purchased). Its all a gamble with the manufacturer hoping I will buy their warranty and their product will hold up at least one day past their addition warranty period. Just a thought.

The country would collapse. Most people don't have the critical thinking skills to understand the budget of the federal government, especially in relation to the 'invisible' services they benefit from on the daily. (Examples: the daily medication you take has gone through a lengthy and strict approval process. The water from your tap has to meet certain standards. Your car has safety standards. Etc.)

45 Examples Of Scams That Have Become Socially Acceptable But Shouldn't Be Student teaching. You pay the college tuition, have to secure and pay for a place to live, often have to get a vehicle, and then agree to not have any outside employment during the semester long assignment. They want you to focus on learning how to become a teacher is the argument but unless you have alternate means of support it's not feasible for many. And folks wonder why young people are not pursuing this option. It's the first of many issues with how teachers are educated and trained

None of the colleges/universities I know of mandate that student teachers can't have outside jobs, so if you're in the US this is an issue with your college, not the norm. My university even encouraged us to get our Substitute License once we were in our final year so that we could substitute during the first semester on days we didn't have class and would tell us what schools near us were looking for substitutes. The only thing we weren't allowed to do was count any day we were paid by the school to substitute as a day toward our credit for Student Teaching. Whether we had jobs outside our student teaching hours was our business. It's not the training/education that is stopping young people here from becoming teachers. It's the pay after you get the job and the utter lack of common courtesy for teachers that is stopping it, at least here in the US.

Just wait…if you teach in Texas, and teach long enough to retire with the teacher retirement system, social security has two provisions [WEP & GPO] which prevent you from drawing social security or other pensions ( ie your spouses). Doesn’t matter if you had other employment which paid into it either. Of course it’s because teachers are paid so well and have great retirement benefits. lol

She’s lives a healthier more active lifestyle and is doing awesome in not just her health but confidence and her career. I can’t say that weight watchers was the only impetus for all her good fortune but I believe it was a big part. I don’t think the price is too high for what you get out of it if you utilize it and stick with it.

They give you hacks about eating out or buying ready made food, and encourage you to exercise. Those are the good points. Their merchandise, though, IS overpriced.

sort-of. I don't think that letting people create their own companies, make products/services, and selling them, is a scam. That's the core of capitalism. However, when you sell "shares" in the company to someone, and do not gives shares to your workers who produce your products/services, and you start gambling with share prices, then yes. But that's the stock market. Not capitalism per se.

I've often said that capitalism is like a game of Monopoly, but communism (not the THEORY of communism, but rather communism as it's actually practiced in the world today) is more like a game of Monopoly where you just skip to the end and one player (the government) declares themselves the winner, gives themselves all the property and all the money, and then throws a dollar at the other players once in a while and calls it "sharing".

Paying "book time" at the mechanic. Basically every type of repair is categorized and given an amount of time that it should take to complete. The people who write this book are very generous to the mechanic with many 5 minute fixes being billable for 0.75-1 hour and 1-2 hour fixes being billable for 5+ hours. Industry people see it as completely normal.

I think that this person is not a mechanic has never worked on a car. Neither have I. I am though a delivery driver and I deliver car parts for a living. I've been to over 100 different places with car parts. Most on a pretty regular basis. I have found out cars can be harder to fix than non-mechanics understand. People choose not to follow the manufacturer 's recommendations on the proper upkeep of their vehicle and not following the common sense rules of driving cause most of not all mechanical issues. At least from what I have heard from the mechanics I've spoken with. Yes vehicle makers do sometimes produce s****y vehicles. But it is usually the person who owns the vehicle who causes most of the problems the mechanic has to fix.

A newer car can be easy to fix but an older one takes more time because of rusted or seized fastening and parts that are difficult to remove. Nuts and bolts can break off or have to be cut off or otherwise extracted. Book time might be an average time from past experience or based on a worst case scenario vs best case to arrive at an average. Some repair shops might give you the choice to pay the book time or actual labor time beforehand. It happened to me once. I chose book time for a suspension repair on a ten year old car and the clerk told me after that I made the right choice because the mechanic had a hell of a time changing the part.

This refers to payroll withholding? 60% of people don't pay income tax, at least in the US, and get it all back + when they file their return. Otherwise, dunno what this means?

The price is to make the place profitable so that it can afford to run and pay its rent. Whether the profit margin is excessive can't be speculated on. You'd need to look at the quality of life of the owner of the bar; is he struggling, or comfortable, or a fatcat?

45 Examples Of Scams That Have Become Socially Acceptable But Shouldn't Be A lot of college degrees/courses Edit: apparently, some people are telling me that what I am saying is wrong and that useful degrees exist. Let me clarify: I said *’A lot’* Here’s the definition: **lot** /lät/ *pronoun* a large number or amount; a great deal. I did **not** say *’all’* Here’s the definition: **all** /ôl/ *predeterminer · determiner · pronoun determiner:* all; pronoun: all used to refer to the whole quantity or extent of a particular group or thing ‘A lot’ ≠ ‘all’ Ex: “I do not like a lot of types of cheese” ≠ “I do not like all types of cheese”, “I do not like a lot of dogs” ≠ “I do not like all dogs” I am not saying all degrees or courses are useless or a scam, I’m saying a lot of them are. Yes, I am in college pursuing an Engineering degree. I have taken chemistry, physics, math, and others courses. They are useful. I see people pursuing degrees in biology, psychology, chemistry, etc. those are useful. However, there are other courses that are not useful.

I'm not sure which other courses are not useful? Let's say philosophy or religion, for example, or classics (latin /greek/ roman culture etc). Tell me, what is so important about western society that the West wants to defend it against say, Russia or China? Or seeing Islamic State as a threat? I mean... the only significant difference between these cultures is... their culture. So if you think philosophy, religion, classics, et.c, is not important... why bother arguing when the Russian or Chinese army shows up? Just say ok cool we'll be Russian/Chinese now? See my point? Your alleged "worthless" courses are culture, they are WHAT MAKES UP your very being "western". You can talk about "Free market capitalism" if you want, that's not actually much different to what china has, except they clamp down on co's that step out of line, unlike USA. So perhaps the diff is culture. Without classics USA would not have frats at universities. Buildings in Wa.D.C would not have fluted columns. etc

They mix everything : In France we don't have tax over tax. When you get paid you have a brut amount of money, some of it goes to tax (the state), some of it goes to solidiarity structure (unemployment, pension, healthcare, etc...). And what's left is yours, period. People being mad at taxes and not at profit don't make much sense in general anyway

looks like the Belgian system. Bruto minus solidarity structure = basis for tax, that gets deducted and then you have your net income. Not tax on a tax, that's simply untrue.

There are very few things that have a tax on a tax, but fuel in the UK is one of them. Duty (a form of tax) is paid at a fix rate per litre on the fuel you buy. AFTER that has been applied, VAT is added, so you are paying an extra 20% of tax on the duty tax.

Cars need so much infrastructure which is damaged pretty fast by them too, so car owners need to be taxed more than those who don't drive. All taxpayers here contribute to our infrastructure but car-less people get the less from it. I have seen a lot of numbers to this topic but sadly I don't remember where your can read about the actual data.

The taxes vary because they want to collect it from different groups. For example, in South Africa our policy is to levy a sales tax on goods, however basic survival goods are not levied at all. So you pay 15% on say Lindt Chocolate but on maize meal (coarse flour), zero tax. Similarly taxes to drive a car are not levied on carless persons; so that covers road maintenance and the Road Accident Fund which insures uninsured people against vehicle accidents. Taxes to park, we don't generally have, however there are parking fees in most malls over 15 minutes. That's to discourage loiterers and panhandlers from being in the mall, or bothering people in the parking, etc. It also discourages long-term parking abuse. On the tax on your income, that's graduated by a scale so that poorer people with lower income pay lower taxes. Etc. Without taxes and government, we'd be back in the robber baron days of the Wild West, where it was shoot or be shot.

A parking ticket represents a small fine for a small lapse in judgement. An engagement ring represents a large fine for a large lapse in judgement. Both can end up with you appearing before a judge.

small fines are to discourage you from bad driving/parking. Just park/drive nicely. Frankly I'm in favour of a graded scale. In SA, we don't grade / scale tickets. Which means the rich laugh them off and the poor are devastated by them.

When coffee is included and breakfast relatively cheap, I tend to book breakfast with my room, although my breakfast usually only consist of two cups of coffee - sometimes I add a cup of yoghurt. Not really. I prefer to rent as I like being able to just ditch the place and go. I always opt for a month-to-month contract even if they charge more, so I can ditch at any time. With a house there's a huge fuss with ownership transfer and lawyers if you want to sell and move. I like the flexibility.

That's a major misunderstanding on OP's part. Pension institutes in Europe are among the largest financial investors in their respective countries. Most investments are in real estate and bonds, relatively safe and long-term (contrary to US, where pension funds do not rule out higher risk investments). Institutes have to guarantee -in their books- the coverage of the average expected pension for everyone since their very first payment.

As an American expat living much more happily in Scandinavia, try living in a country where your govt is actually accountable to its people. Or more specifically, doesn't have an entire political party paid by the donor class to sabotage public programs so they can point to the malfunctions *they created* as an excuse to privatize everything so their donors get their ill gotten gains back multi-fold. Govt is only a problem when it fails to uphold its part of the social contract, and that's down to a lack of enforcement mechanisms.
