Known for his work in the animation world, Los Angeles based artist Dave Pressler recently exhibited “Robot Carnival,” a show at Gallery 1988 with a star studded roster of robot artists. “Robot Carnival” featured works by Dave, Mark Bryan, Andrew Rae, David Chung, Aaron Jasinski, Gabe Lanza, Geoffrey Gersten, Joshua Ellingson, Lawrence Yang, and Shaun Peterson and transformed the gallery into a space evocative of an old-time carnival, replete with popcorn and cotton candy.

Sly, playful, seductive, and humorous, the works in this exhibition transport us into a parallel world filled with mechanical imitations of ourselves. Rather than being completely mechanized beings that humans have fast become reliant on, the satirical characters in “Robot Carnival” give us space to imagine and play. A carnival put on by what Dave calls “robot shysters” could be an epic disaster, dangerous, and simultaneously eccentric and whimsical. These robots are perfectly imperfect, and the parallel world pictured becomes a place where we can make fun of ourselves through these mechanical beings.
