Hollywood Did Not Appreciate Ricky Gervais Roasting Them With His Golden Globes Monologue

The Golden Globes is one of the most prestigious award shows, rewarding and recognizing excellence in film and television, American and International. The event has been running for 75 years and this year’s ceremony was hosted by none other than English comedian Ricky Gervais who had the honor of doing so for five years.

However, it seems like he didn’t regard it as that important anymore and shared his opinions as well as jokes during the opening speech. Gervais revealed that it was his last time hosting the show and followed it by saying that he no longer cares and thinks that neither do the show’s organizers.

The comedian went off on an 8-minute monologue criticizing various aspects of Hollywood, bringing in issues of racism, the Epstein scandal and finishing the speech with a jab at every “woke” celebrity that tries to lecture the world as they’re receiving the awards.

During his opening speech, Gervais gave a monologue that took aim at the celebrities present

Unsurprisingly, not everyone is too happy about Gervais’ speech

As celebrities in the audience barely laughed or had other facial expressions to offer to the jokes, most of the people on Twitter, especially those leaning towards the right political wing, praised Gervais on his choice of words. However, unsurprisingly, there were those who criticized the comedian and called him a bully.

Stand-up comedian Whitney Cummings took to Twitter to defend Gervais from the criticism

In response to the more conservative people praising him and regarding his criticism on the Hollywood culture as right-wing, Gervais has this to say: “How the [heck] can teasing huge corporations, and the richest, most privileged people in the world be considered right wing?”

I’m also just shocked that no media outlet has picked up how Reese laughed when Ricky made those Leo jokes. She was right in the background when they showed Leo and it was HILARIOUS. She tried not to laugh but made a face like “this is too true” and openly laughed. You can tell that Leo’s young gfs are an inside joke between many in Hollywood

As a comedian, I never found Gervais remotely funny. I tried a few things of his, but nope, not a titter, so I lost interest in him and never had any time for him. Now, I'm a big fan! Still don't find him funny, but when he bursts those fragile little egos, that is beyond comedy and so, so true.

The best thing about Ricky is he won't apologize. The more they complain about him the more he's going to give it right back. I completely agreed with everything he said, it needed to be said. If they got offended it's because they know he's right.

What's there to apologize for? He spoke nothing more than the uncomfortable truth. If anyone should apologize, it's the people in the audience. If the reality is so harsh and you can make people laugh (us at home) by pointing it out in front of their faces, you're not an a*****e, not do you need to apologize for their behaviour.

I've only seen one of his Golden Globe speeches (I think the first one). They knew what they were getting into. I'm not a massive fan of Gervais (too obvious for my personal taste) but he is a talented comedian and even before he was super famous, he was pretty fearless.

Ricky is a classical liberal and has actual integrity. This is how conservative republicans find incredible joy in the take down and still disagree with him on other issues. It is called critical thinking and finding agreement.

No kidding. I'm so sick of this "You're either with us 100% or against us". It's okay to appreciate things for what they are. Conservatives appreciated what he did in that moment in time and that's okay. It's why, ironically, conservatives are the more open minded side now. They'll at least allow others a platform and they'll give credit where credit is due.

AHHHAHAHAHA! Ok, I am right leaning. I do not envision that he will ever be speaking to support what I do. But it is so refreshing to see someone, anyone, right or left, tell the pompous rich who do far less research into a topic before supporting it than the average voter does (which is sadly very little for most, on either side). He called them out. And better yet, IT IS HIS JOB! He is a comedian, and the funniest jokes contain some truth. Those who got offended need to check themselves. Back your positions, fine, but at least laugh at the jokes tossed your way because of it! He was always MEH to me, until now....I may give his material more of a shot. Huge....the size of his brass balls.

There was a moment where he broke cadence and quickly said something like "god, I can't do this next joke". I wonder how calculated that was. He's certainly fearless, I'm not for a moment suggesting he was giving himself an "out" - just curious if it was as genuine as he made it seem.

#Ricky Gervais, is the only thing that make me watch the G.G awards. Everything he say are true, but the stuck up actors want to be treated as the supernatural humans they see themself as (with a few exceptions, Tom Hanks being one of them). Gervais donate so much money to helping animals. Ask the stuck up actors how much they have donated, and they will scream SECURITY!

Finally someone in a position to speak the truth had a forum allowing him to express what so many of us feel. Especially the Harvey Weinstein saga. Apparently everyone in Hollywood knew and let fledgling actress after fledgling actress be objectified and used and stayed silent. Each and every person who knew abetted his criminal behavior and was essentially an accomplice to the abuse. Don’t get upset at Gervais for putting it into words.

Ricky Gervais has my total respect. He had the balls to call out some very privileged hypocrites who merely pay lip service to liberal ideas—-but only if those are the currently popular ideas. The ones who laughed are the ones who actually put their money where their mouth is, and genuinely contribute their time and/or money to legitimate causes they believe in, making them truly woke. The ones who didn’t laugh are the ones who make a big noise acting like they’re woke without actually being woke—-for nothing more than making themselves look relevant in that moment, after which they never say another word about it.

This man knows c**p when he's in front of it. For all the underpaid teachers and workers, and these overpaid egomaniacs, it's just a show where people give themselves awards. Does anyone even remember last year? And much as I try to side with my sisters, Hollywood women sell sexuality, then cry about someone biting your tit -- this isn't the game for you. All these awards have run their course. Dump it all. It's fantasy, it's cartoons, it makes women hate their bodies and everyone hate their life. Stop the world, I want to get off!

Hollywood absolutely deserved the can of "whup-a$$" [as we say in Texas] that Ricky Gervais opened on them--and more. They are hypocrites, liars, perverts and thieves--and those are their better points. The Greta Thunberg comment was so spot on that when Tom Hanks showed disdain--I wished he would have needed to change his pants.

I understand all of this - and agree with some of it. It took a lot of gut s for him to get up there and say that. But why shouldn't actors/actresses be able to voice their opinion? They vote, I say they should be able to express their opinions. Sure - maybe the Golden Globes isn't the right forum. But I don't think facebook/twitter/snapchat/instagram are the right forum either. I personally wish we could go back to a time when it was considered inappropriate to tell people who you voted for - now we are posting images of ballots on facebook. Don't act like Hollywood/actors/actresses/rich and famous etc are the only ones we are getting unsolicited, uneducated opinions from.

He does this every time they let him loose on stage. That's why they put him up there, the elite like to tell the world what they're up to. Because the majority of society simply doesn't give a toss and the rest are so wrapped up in their little bubbles they don't see through the charade. Hollywood is laughing at us and Ricky is them rubbing our noses in it!

Most comedians are blowing it big time. They FINALLY have a truly out-of-left field, totally unoventional, US president. Both the presidents' own antics, and the hysterial overreaction to them by establishment, cry out to be lampooned and mocked. Yet instead of taking advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, they seem to be more interested in political preaching.

Didn't Hollywood invited him? What did they expected of him? It's like when Rosie O'Donnell was invited to sing the anthem just to be 'booed'. If you know how these people are, don't invite them or it's on you. Holly, just suck it!

I remember seeing Ricky Gervais when he got his first TV gig on the 11 o'clock Show. He wasn't the star, he had a 'spot' He was the least funniest of those on the show and has, arguably, had the most successful career. In the show he played the 'part' of an obnoxious, boorish character who abused everyone verbally. Back then it wasn't funny because there were no jokes, no punchlines and no point. Nothing has changed except the maybe people are realising that it isn't an act. The Emperor has no clothes. NB donating money to charity doesn't mean he's funny..

I was watching Netflix (yep, Ricky's right) while this was on the air, so I had to pull up a video. That was awkward as hell, but also so so true. I never had strong feelings about Ricky Gervais one way or another, but if there was ever a place to not give a s**t, a Hollywood award show is definitely it. I can appreciate actors for what they do. Hell I couldn't stand on front of a camera like that. But they aren't any more important or special than anyone else.

Cori, it comes down to people who take their political positions from Hollyweirdos are just plain stupid, gullible and not mentally competent. I practiced psychiatry and neurology for over five decades, and I had rabid, OCD fans of different famous people that I treated, including my share of celebrities who came into the back door and refused to see me again when I wouldn't write the narcotics they wanted. I've seen it all. I'm less than impressed with the lack of intellectual capacity of celebrities who live on every word their personal assistants tell them. They've lost touch and are narcissistic beyond description. It's a huge reason I curtailed my psychiatry practice and focused on neurology. At least those patients had an honest diagnosis instead of some scripted s**t they were trying to get me to write a Xanax prescription.

Classic liberals and centrist conservatives both have 2 things in common: they'll give credit where credit is due, and they aren't "You're either 100% with us or against us". You seem like the latter. It's much more helpful to try to find that middle ground. The fact it angers you that conservatives are giving credit where credit is due says you are one of the people who'd prefer to divide and conquer as opposed to appreciating the common ground.

If you mean because of Jarvis Dupont I would disagree. Ricky had this to say regarding those tweets - “Jarvis Dupont is a spoof Twitter account, and the joke is that he’s so woke that he’s actually gone full circle and does terrible things, and his latest is, ‘I’m trans now.’ And he gets all that wrong. And I responded by playing along with him, saying, ‘Oh, you’re so much better than biological women because they’ve had a lifetime to get used to it.’ Now, people saw my tweet and they thought he’s a real trans person, but I’m taking the p**s out of Jarvis Dupont, who is actually a woman in real life.” If you mean something else, provide some evidence.

Do we seriously live in a time now where people call a COMEDIAN who made jokes that weren’t even half as mean as I’ve heard before, a bully? People truly can’t laugh at themselves anymore. It s sad.

He was hosting an awards show for the entertainment industry. Key word being 'entertainment.' there are no 'sacred cows' in Hollywood so I personally don't see what the fuss is about. I thought Ricky Gervais was wildly entertaining.

I’m also just shocked that no media outlet has picked up how Reese laughed when Ricky made those Leo jokes. She was right in the background when they showed Leo and it was HILARIOUS. She tried not to laugh but made a face like “this is too true” and openly laughed. You can tell that Leo’s young gfs are an inside joke between many in Hollywood.

All anyone needs to know about Gervais is the vid on him getting mocked by David Bowie. He is the most genuine person on the planet. This speech made him #1 in my book.

For every one of you died hard Trump supporters suddenly waving the Ricky flag; remember, Ricky is a huge openly spoken atheist and has constantly made fun of and criticized all religions. He hates you too more than you know. So before you post, actually read about the person you're waving a flag for.

Now this is a hero. Not someone who worships Hollywood celebs. Most of Hollywood is pedos, those that don’t wish to look into it and research are cowards who don’t want their hero’s upset. Over 1 million children go missing every year in the US alone. Where do they go. Super Hollywood hero Tom Hanks was a visitor on the Lolita express to underage orgy island. Check out the flight logs. Wake up.

What are you talking about 115 kids get taken by unknown people in America every year. 115. 115 kids are literally stolen. That number again? 115.

I don't understand why they would have him as host... I mean I don't hate it... but it seems like a questionable choice.

One of the greatest opening monologues ever. The left ruined watching any award shows using the stage to spew their hate for the President. Everything Ricky said was the truth. Glad someone had the balls to be truthful to these hypocrites.

A rich white edgelord celebrates being a rich white aging edgelord over other rich white people who at least TRY and do some good. Meanwhile, his schtick is that it's really brave for rich white dudes to punch down at people who can't punch back.

Of course the elite were shocked. They’re not used to hearing the truth loud and clear. They’ve been on their high horse ridiculing on every platform they can In vulgar, and. In threatening ways that should have gotten visits from the FBI or Homeland security with their far out stunts. They really think in their little world that they’re superior and are just going to tell everyone else their rulings on the President.....Guess Not.

Another rich white dude, bravely punching down. He's so oppressed by those evil people who refuse to let him punch down. Won't somebody hold a telethon for poor aging edgelords?

He wasn't funny. He was insulting them. That is not comedy. He was not creative. Whitney Cummings is not funny. Being vulgar is an easy out in comedy. And it isn't really funny

We here in America are pretty sick of Hollywood. We found it funny because it was true and he is the first to have the balls to tell them.

Best speech ever they all needed to hear that hate those people about as much as government. I am surprised that its well received here since it is a more conservative opinion then liberal I am surprised you all aren't triggered.

It's not conservative - it's outside of 'left or right'. It's about people who earn a fortune thinking they can tell everyone else how to live. Ricky Gervais if anything is left of centre.
