No, I don't think that's true and I don't think that's the point he's making. I think it means he's saying that material goods aren't as valuable or helpful in cheering us up. He's admitting to making a mistake in how he tries to help her feel better and saying his wife, by cheerfully and affectionately appealing to his baser instincts is more wise.

It means women want you to think about them more than just objects. what is it that they are to you. For each woman it would be a different series of gifts. Possibly just a bouquet of roses, a photograph you fixed of her grand mother, a ring she though she lost but you went and had repaired instead. We men want to know that we are wanted and that boils down to the physical. We men live up to our stereotyping, but women are so broad and varied from one person to the next it would be impossible to illustrate all the possibilities.

Stereotyping is not wrong and exists for a reason, because it has a peculiar likelihood of validity within a given set of parameters. Only problem with stereotyping is that people tend to use it as a sledge hammer ALL the time. So yes, the above pic in general is pretty valid, doesn't matter if it doesn't apply in your particular case.
