Like something out of a whimsical Christmas tale, an extremely rare white baby deer was recently spotted in Oslo, Norway by wildlife photography enthusiast Mads Nordsveen and the photos are enchanting.

The 24-year-old said: “I was walking in the mountains looking for nice landscapes for my travel photography when out of nowhere I saw this adorable animal.” While the wintery background almost entirely camouflaged the cute deer, the photographer said it made no attempt to hide and even ‘posed’ for some pictures.

But Nordsveen got more than pictures from experience: “He came very close to me, and we looked at each other straight in the eyes,” he recalled, “After some minutes the mother of the white deer came out of trees just behind. It walked around for some minutes before running back to its mother. It was very magical and a fairy tale moment.”

White reindeer have an uncommon genetic mutation that strips their fur of pigment to allow them to blend into their snowy surroundings. Unlike albinos, they still have dark pigmentation in their eyes and antlers.

It’s not the first time this photographer/ explorer got lucky to meet wild animals in person. He also got to meet a Lynx and wolves, both also in Northern Norway.

Yes, and in the background you can see several winter Wunderbaum! (badum tshhh)
Load More Replies...Yes, this is a baby. They grow antlers, they look like small sticks just like in the picture. They shed antlers every year, and the older they get, the bigger the antlers they will grow each year. There are wild reindeer in Norway, though most reindeer, especially north of Oslo, aren't. Hardangervidda has a huge population of wild reindeer. In sami language, we call the white ones klovse, they are weaker than the coloured ones and don't survive that well in the wild. Often, they are deaf, and don't hear when the herd is moving on, so you can sometimes find them sleeping alone somewhere in the mountains. In Sami mythology, they say they belong to the underground people, and if you find an unmarked white one, you can throw a knife or something silver over them, then they'll belong to you.
Ehh, white its not specially rare, about 20% of reindeers are white (and that ones not albino either) Northersn reindeers are not wild, they are breed and herd every year in end of summer to be marked (and selected ones slaughtered), and in livestock white is not rarer than others... their beutifull thought
This is what I thought. Last autum went to lapland for a week and saw at least 10 white ones + 100 others.
