Occupational Safety isn't a joke. If you're fixing an AC compressor on the ledge of the 28th floor with no harness, you're just inviting trouble over, and risking not only your life but ending up on the r/OSHA subreddit as well.

This online community is made up of 725,000 members who are constantly reminding one another to follow safety regulations by posting pictures of people who didn't. And I have to say, it's working — these disasters in the making were so bad, scrolling through them made me put on a helmet before changing the lightbulb in my bedroom and getting inside a hazmat suit just as I was about to take out the trash.

One of the moderators of the subreddit, -eDgAR-, said it is above all a subreddit that is meant to be lighthearted, where you come for a laugh at how ridculous some people can be. "It's not meant to be a place for serious discussions about safety, although, often times comments can actually get into great analysis about the issues shown in posts, which is grea," they told Bored Panda.

Reminds me of where I used to work. None of the sprinkler systems were connected to a water source and all the fire extinguishers were located in the hall. We are a secured office due to PHI and had to have keys to enter. No one had keys to the front door except management and we had to walk down a hallway, about 60 feet, to come in the back. The extinguishers were also expired. When it rained, we could hear the rain splashing down something, it was relaxing until you realized you were sitting in the center of the building.

Many buildings have a rain duct in the middle so that's not necessarily a bad thing to hear. Otherwise, sounds like a major accident waiting to happen.

However, if we were to get serious for a moment, there were 5,250 fatal work injuries in the US in 2018, with falls being the leading cause of death. A year before, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported 5,147 workplace fatalities. The United States consistently outpaces other industrialized nations in workplace fatalities: here, the average rate for these incidents has hovered at 3.5 deaths for every 100,000 workers over the past decade while workplace fatality rates in the UK have remained under 1.0 death for every 100,000 workers over the past decade, and under 1.5 deaths for every 100,000 workers on average for the 15 earliest member states of the European Union.

Did that a bunch of times myself. Rigging crew riding out after a 10 plus hour work day. Looks like a shotgun carriage setup. About as safe as you can get. Sometimes the rigging would be out 1,500 to 2,000 feet. Walking back that distance uphill from the tail end to the landing could take 20 minutes. So it was just easier to ride back up under the carriage..

In the steel industry, for example, several workers die every year from a fatal fall, and the occupation is regularly cited as one of the most dangerous in the US. Even though

Sadly, Mike Wright, director of health, safety and environment at the United Steelworkers union, told The Guardian that all of these deaths are preventable. "I've seen a lot of fatalities where you walk in and you think: 'I can't believe this didn't happen 10 years ago," Wright said.

According to him, fatalities most often happen in shifts where supervision is lacking in cases where routine safety procedures are ignored, such as workers rushing to fix a broken piece of equipment to return to production as soon as possible.

Wright explained that many fatal falls are underreported because of how coroners rule on causes of death. If a cardiac event was included as part of a workplace fall, OSHA will often refuse to code these incidents as workplace fatalities even if the United Steelworkers union argues the victim would have survived the cardiac event otherwise.

Employers should not only look for ways to eliminate risks and hazards but also use administrative controls, such as proper training, providing personal protective equipment, and creating systems where production pressures, miscommunication, or poor training don't enable something to go wrong where it could cause a worker to get injured or die in the workplace.

Getting back to r/OSHA, -eDgAR- said it is governed by pretty much the same laws as the rest of Reddit. For example, the answer to the question of whether or not a particular post goes go viral often lies in timing. "We don't get a crazy amount of posts like other subreddits and have seen days with only a handful of posts. If you're one of the lucky first chances are you'll get to the top."

Yup! Can confirm, we used to do similar things at work. I remember when we had to install smoke detectors in a sporting facility. Our ladder didn't reach so we used the volleyball refs chair and somehow managed to put the ladder on top of it. Also had a 12m ladder that was meant to be used to get on top of a tree (had spiky rollers at the end), but we used it on a gym wall that was smooth. Fun times. 😅

It is a common practical joke. You balance a large handyman on top of a door that is slightly ajar, and the next guy walking through gets him dropped onto his head (breaking his neck). It's usually hillarious!

I met an old dude, seventy something, who helped organise this and lived at a little resort thing I stayed at for a few months. Had a pretty full life. Vietnam. Guru. One leg removed. Drank one or two bottles of vodka every other night, then he'd call me Kenny for the rest of the night and then he'd start getting verbally abusive with me. Apparently my hair was like an old friend of his. Then he'd be up swimming the next morning. I miss the guy. Always think of the stories he'd tell me when I see anything about this concert.

Reminds me how half my house burnt down. I had a plumber come in to replace old metal pipes. He was using a torch to pull the pipes out in sections. At one point, he gets a phone call and steps outside to take it. The dumbass left the torch on up against the wooden studs of the wall frame. You can guess what happened next. And it wasn't an accident. He left the torch on because the propane n*b was too difficult to turn and he was only going to be outside for a couple seconds.

Before they knew it caused cancer, it was used at a fire retardant and is still superior to all fire retardants on the market. In fact Power Plants and industrial facilities till today in the US are allowed to use a new form of asbestos as a retardant, which is 100% safe, but because of the bad rep of asbestos it isnt sold on the commercial market

This actually makes me feel sick. Such a silly competition with such dire results. My mom has asbestosis. Her dad worked in an asbestos mine, and they use to play with the stuff as kids

Much like the time my coworkers and I complained about having to lift really heavy power supplies above our head while standing on stepladders. That's the only way we could reach the shelves. So they showed us a video with stick-figures showing us how to lift properly. Apparently we should have been bending at the knees while standing on stepladders and lifting really heavy power supplies above our head to put them on high shelves.

That is proper equipment. The chimney is in close proximity to structures, so toppling it is not a good idea. Heavy equipment operates from rubble-piles every day. Also, we don't know if the power-hammer operator is harnessed in or not. If he is, it's no different than if he were operating from a boom-lift.

Sounds like someone just doesn't want to work. And 6/12 pitch is not that steep. Also now someone has to repair shingle damage after driving nails in that cleat. But it is a legit way to do the work.

Amen. BTW, that board is possibly nailed in, causing micro-holes in the roof, so the contractor can get his buddy come fix *that*. Just a quick FYI. My uncle-by-marriage was the contractor who got the roofing jobs that way from his brother who did house painting.

I wouldn't do this for $10/hr either! Besides that though, the ladder is braced an a cleat (common practice). You should be in an anti-fall harness as well. How else would you do this?

That's not actually what it says, it's just that the translation is incorrect. It actually says: Be careful the ground is slippery. (This happens all the time in China.)

He gets on the ladder at the bottom of the roof, his equally daft pals push the ladder up the roof with a two-by-four, then keep pushing it up with a pole. Then they take photos to memorialize their idiocy.

this reminds me of when i did set design for a play last year. I was standing on a ladder balanced precariously on a 5 ft wide board, leaning over about a 2ft gap to hold up a 40lb painted wood wall so my friend could go grab a drill so I could drill it in. also, I was about 15-20 ft off the ground. said wall was only a portion of the final wall and I was holding the bottom of it and the top of the previously placed wall together to balance them so the top wall didnt fall on me and make me fall off the ladder and get trapped in a very small tight space between two wooden boards.

Yup. In some hotels they are coin operated. During a shower you have to be careful inserting coins. In Colombia if you get a shock, they call it the Colombian shower dance.
