Women have had hundreds upon hundreds of reasons to carry protest posters since the dawn of time, whether it was for voting rights, reproductive rights, or most recently, against sexual predators holding powerful positions. What started with the first well-organized, not so peaceful protest for suffrage in as early as 1913, is now often supported by men also, who understand that feminism and related social issues are not some evil entity, but rather thinking of women as equals. Sadly enough, ladies still have to prove their worthiness to some.

To celebrate the strength and bravery of all the women and girls who have taken to the streets, stood up for their beliefs and gender equality, and stared down anyone who tried to get in their way, we've compiled the best photos of female social activists and protesters from around the world, and they're sure to speak to your renegade soul. They might even inspire you to get a protest sign in your own hands the next time you have a chance. Be sure to vote for the most powerful ones, and let us know if you've ever committed an act of defiance for a good cause in the comments.

Amazing images and very empowering and hopeful. I went through all of your pixs but you failed to include this one. High school Native American track and field long distance runner Rosalie Fish decided one day to protest the missing and murdered Native American women in America by painting a bloody hand across her face, an act that spoke to millions. http://bit.ly/2vayCce

One is correcting a failing natural process. The other is preventing a properly functioning natural process. Poor comparison, at best.

Not if they're both gods will. Which many believe in that sort of thing. Thats the main point of the sign.

If you read about the history of women in sports, things like this were pretty normal. Spectators might even have considered such a move to be righteous. Fortunately, fellow sportspeople typically recognize how sports – while showing that we not all have the same abilities – can reveal that we all share some ambitions, gender, race, believe etc. notwithstanding.

because police aren't there protecting HER and she is the one brave citizen to stand up for the many! police are just trained dogs to do as anyone with enough money and power tell them to do. so while she's representing her people, the police are just there waiting on orders. yes, to many, the slogan is to "protect and serve" but whose protecting her and the reason why she is there protesting in the first place. thats right! no one but her and the other protesters. Look at this pic! these people are literally willing to fight for what they beleive in but all they are doing is chanting and making noise and police get called because apparently people having a voice in any dang age is wrong. They didn't come to protect her, you can see it in their faces! those guys hate their job! they show up with their big guns and in their big a*s suits of armor and the woman whose literally 2 heads shorter is the threat? and i bet it was the police man who got in her face and she just didnt move!

Not necessary. It happens sometimes, that the forces supposed to bash the People refuse their task. In France it's called "Fraternisation". During French revolution, in Paris, guards refused to obey the King, during the wine revolts in 1907 a régiment join the demonstrators and pacificaly prevent the other forces to hurt them... It cost nothing to try. ;)

Such a gesture could possibly land you waiting in jail for months to face your felony charges. In North Dakota last year, a veteran tried to hand a flower to a police officer as protesters were marching by. He was grabbed by about 5-6 police officers. The guy panicked. He kept yelling, "I have panic attacks from military service!" over and over, probably coached by a therapist as to what to do if a panic attack came on. Things have gotten WAY out of hand here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vmmjof8BVYA

No one would dare to do something like this nowadays since the military ( not all members thought) shoot the moment their guns are touched, they are to assume the gun is being wrestled from them or tampered with in some way. Too dangerous for a protester to do stuff like this. If the guy was trigger happy back in ‘67, this peaceful image would not have been taken.

Unfortunately not long ago after she became famous for that, she basically had to close her twitter and facebook accounts because of the antisemitic things she was saying. It was things like "Hitler didn't kill all the jews, he left some alive so we can understand why he was killing them", or "I hate them so much (the jews)" :s

Anti-muslim, anti-LGTB, anti-trans and such are all ludicrous. That's like kicking a kid out of a sports crew for owning a red blanket. It's wild and it doesn't make any sense at all. We need to focus on the more important and sensible "anti" subjects, such as anti-abortion, anti-rascism, and anti-bullying. We don't need to let differences get between a human and a normal life.

Anti-muslim is very different from anti LGBT(Q). LGBTQ never hurt anybody and they don't oppress people. I'm not saying I agree with an anti-muslim protest, but at least they are protesting real world suffering directly brought on by muslim people. Two very different things.

She can do it at an anti-Muslim demonstration among the peaceful Christians, but a Christian woman would be dead among the Muslims if the same Christian were tried that what this protein block is doing in this picture.

Those were heroes. It is so sad that modern feminism has been corrupted by leftism nonsenses, stupid proclamations, poking in the language and many other useless things. Even women often condemn those ideas and activities today because of that. Truth is that we owe original feminism equality in law, work and family. Today´s "feminism" is just a bunch of mad social warriorswhose do a bad name to this movement.

There has been an ongoing conflict over Ireland, for hundreds of years. In the 1920's (sorry, unsure of date) Ireland became independent of Britain, EXCEPT for a portion called 'Northern Ireland' which remained under British control. The IRA and republicans fought/fight to gain independence and the UVF fought/fight to stay British. And whenever there was any 'trouble' (i.e riots and violence) the British sent in the army. Hence this.

Honestly I'm still someone who kinda goes "UUUM UM UM" and has NO idea where it's polite to look for a few seconds when a mother begins breastfeeding...and then I realize I'm being ridiculous and this is WAY more a thing for her than it is for me, and if SHE'S not awkward, then I don't have to do. But even in my worst, worst, WORST moments, it never would have occurred to me to ban it. That''s like banning people over 6 feet from walking too quickly. Babies gotta eat, tall people gotta walk.

Breastfeeding is natural because the milk in the woman's breasts is essential to the babies' health and well being. So if you do not like to see women breastfeeding, then you might as well just let the baby starve to death. Suck it up, and deal with women breastfeeding.

I knew I'd heard that surname before and the subject and time period were correct. Remember Disney's Mary Poppins? The song "Sister Suffragette" We're clearly soldiers in petticoats And dauntless crusaders for woman's votes Though we adore men individually We agree that as a group they're rather stupid! Cast off the shackles of yesterday! Shoulder to shoulder into the fray! Our daughters' daughters will adore us And they'll sign in grateful chorus "Well done, Sister Suffragette!" From Kensington to Billingsgate One hears the restless cries! From ev'ry corner of the land: "Womankind, arise!" Political equality and equal rights with men! Take heart! For Missus Pankhurst has been clapped in irons again! No more the meek and mild subservients we! [...] Songwriters: Richard M. Sherman / Robert B. This was in Brirain, not the US... Women in the UK gained the vote in 1918, but eligibility required meeting property restrictions and an age of 30, compared to an age of 21 and with no property restrictions for men. Equal suffrage came into place in 1928 (21 with no property restrictions for men and women) and in 1969 the age was reduced to 18.

They still can't vote in Saudi Arabia and the testimony before court of one man is worth that of two or even four women (depending on the circumstances) in Sharia (Islamist) courts. Nor do women have equal rights in many other ways in the Muslim religion.

English suffragettes were tough. Men once set a meeting room on fire and blocked the entrances so the women couldn't escape. They did and were not daunted. One woman even killed herself by running onto a racing field. Others were imprisoned, went on hunger strikes and were force fed. We have a lot to be thankful to those women for.

They have since kicked Victor Syvatski out and the movement is now headed only by women. According to their current leading member Inna Shevchenko, Syvatski was not a founder of FEMEN, just someone who insinuated himself into the roll of leader. Syvatski was very opposed to the idea but they allowed Kitty Green to make her film because it would bring this to public light.
