The long-awaited 2020 Tokyo Olympics has come to an end and some of the athletes are returning to their home countries triumphant with medals around their necks, while others were less lucky, but still have their hearts filled with good memories.
There were a lot of those memorable stories during the last few weeks and it would be hard to recount them all. Bored Panda brings you a list of powerful photos representing athletes' milestones and just wholesome moments that made the Olympics even more amazing.

Philippines Just Won Its First Gold Medal In The Olympics
It was a beautiful moment. I wanted to happy cry with her.
Load More Replies...Watching this happen was so emotional and heart warming, she'll be a legend in her country forever!
The little countries winning is far more impressive than huge countries doing it
I think you mean poor countries. The Phillippines with 108 million inhabitants is by no measure a small country.
Load More Replies...She's the best rewarded Olympian ever: Hidilyn Diaz won the first Olympic gold medal for the Philippines on Monday. The weightlifter ended the country's 97-year Olympic drought, and now will be rewarded for her historic accomplishment. Diaz will receive at least 33 million pesos – about $600,000 – from the country.
Load More Replies...The 2020 Tokyo Olympics were held in 2021, i.e. a year after it was supposed to, so this year it was highly anticipated. The Olympics were postponed due to the pandemic as last year, it was only the beginning of it, so Japan as well as the world wasn’t prepared to hold such an event safely.
Japan had an extra year to get ready for the Games and to ensure all safety measures. The athletes had to do COVID-19 tests regularly, wear masks everywhere and sanitize their hands. The Olympic events didn’t have spectators and the athletes had to put medals on their necks by themselves in order to minimize contact.
This Man Stands Outside The Tokyo Olympic Village Every Day To Motivate Athletes
That’s just part of why it was so horrible that people were attacking Simone Biles. The fact that she qualified for the Olympics AGAIN is amazing enough, it’s awful that s bunch of judgey fat-butts were shaming her. Qualifying for the Olympics at all is amazing!
There is homophobic, racism, sexism, right here just well. This is about the kindness and goodness in people. It shows it does exist, even among the horrible. No more, no less.
High Jumpers Mutaz Essa Barshim And Gianmarco Tamberi Shared The Gold Medal, Which Had Not Happened Since 1912
I loved when the official asked Mutaz-Essa Barshim from Qatar about how he wanted to do the jump off for gold. Barshim replied can't we just share? The judge sputters I don't know if there's a rule forbidding it and the two guys just jumped into each others arms. The official was just trying to do some planning for the next stage and their enthusiasm turned it into world joy.
This why I like to watch Olympics. May these go down in history records.
However, it doesn’t matter how strictly the organizers try to make the athletes follow the safety measures, the risk of the disease is always there. So they had to think not only about prevention but also what should be done when a case of COVID-19 would be confirmed.
According to Kyodo News, the total number of people who tested positive since July and had any relation to the Olympics was 430. They reported, “Of the 430 confirmed cases since July 1, only 32 were those of people who stayed in the village. A total of 286 are residents of Japan and 144 from overseas. The largest portion of the total, 236, were contract workers, followed by 109 games participants and 29 athletes.”
Olympic Gold Medalist Tom Daley Knitting In The Stands To Calm His Nerves While Watching The Diving
Thank you Tom Daley for making knitting 'n' crocheting 'norm and okay' and not "just for grannies"
This! I knit. I love it. It’s calming and creative and there’s endless cool patterns alongside lemon yellow baby booties.. I’m fed up with it still being stuck with the granny vibe.
Load More Replies...Did you see his Olympic cardigan? https://www.instagram.com/p/CSL0_WOrlWL/?hl=en
Whatever it takes to calm nerves. And nice to know he made it acceptable for men to knit, crochet, or craft in general. Well done.
Jamaica Takes Gold, Silver And Bronze In Women’s 100m Final In The Tokyo Olympics 2021
We need to know the secret of Jamaica... I'm imagining someone is chasing them around from a young age..
I’d love to see some kind of analysis for why certain countries perform better in some events. I know from a genetics standpoint, black people tend to do well at running events (I think there’s some deal with some particular leg muscle in a lot of people with close African ancestry? Idk. And there’s some gene apparently that determines if you’re better at sprinting vs endurance), but why specifically have Jamaicans done so well at running? Why does the US do so well in women’s gymnastics?
Load More Replies...Holy Jebus look at the legs on those ladies. WOW. Bet they could also kick a football through the goal posts from 100 Meters.
No kidding. They are all ripped, even excluding their thigh and calf muscles. Look at their abs and upper body muscles, that is beyond impressive. Seeing them run was amazing to watch and a complete joy. I would like to thank them for reminding all of us that the Olympics are about competition on the purest level and showing us what amazing physical feats humans are capable of achieving. That seemed to get lost in all the kneeling and protesting, so hats off to those extraordinary women and their well earned medals.
Load More Replies...Its all those beautiful beaches they get to run on. Sand is hard to run in so your legs get stronger. I mean, fantastic place to train. Running on the beach with the sun and the smell of the ocean and hear the waves.
Oksana Chusovitina, 46 Years Old, Has Participated In Olympics Since 1992 And 2020 Tokyo Olympics Was Her Eighth And Last One
Her first olympics was Barcelona 1992 - gold medal with the Unified team. Most of her current competitors in Tokyo weren't even born back then (except Vanessa Ferarri who was 2 years old in 1992). She also got silver medal on vault in Beijing 2008 olympic games, performing a difficult vault named after her in the Code of points. What a legend.
Awesome! This is the type of story we should have been focused on. What a remarkable athlete and what a shame I am just hearing her story in this post.
Saw her performance. Even though she couldn’t pass to the next round she was great. Very emotional. Ole!!!!!
There were people who believed that continuing with the Olympics when the pandemic is not yet over was a mistake and the safest choice would have been to postpone it again. But evidently that decision wasn’t made and the Games carried on.
It was an extraordinary event with impressive opening and closing ceremonies and, of course, the performances of the athletes. Their results were amazing, world and national records were broken and even though Bored Panda didn’t report on everything, we covered some stories that maybe you would be interested in in, like the one of this BMX racer who had to crowdfund her trip to Tokyo, this one of an Australian working at Woolworths to be able to save some money, and this one of a gymnast who had to withdraw from the competition because of her mental state.
Flora Duffy Wins Bermuda's First-Ever Gold At 2020 Tokyo Olympics
I always feel more happy for the small countries that get their first medal!!!!
The larger the country, the more people they have to select from. Look at the top medal earners, all countries with large populations
Load More Replies...The Bermudas had two athletes at all at the Olympics, if I am not mistaken. A 50% gold medal rate likely is unchallenged. ;)
I love the emotion on her face. It shows everything you need to know without being told what she is doing or why. Pride, joy, vindication, and everything else she and her country deserves.
Excellent. Wonderful for her and Bermuda. Give her a parade. Wait...Bermuda is a country?
She looks like a Duffy. In all seriousness tho, she is and forever will be a legend.
Quanesha Burks - From Mcdonalds To The Tokyo Olympics In Long Jump!!
Just so we all remember, there is excellence in all of us. Keep that in mind when you are tempted to dismiss someone, for ANY reason!
Mcdonalds be all like "look any one of you can do it, here is f*****g min wage, oh sales are down time to pick some one to go home against their will!"
Don't make it about her looks. People look how they do by an accident of genetics. She worked hard to get to the Olympics. One is an achievement, the other merely happenstance.
Load More Replies...American Shot Putter Ryan Crouser Won A Gold Medal And Had A Message To His Grandad: "Grandpa, We Did It, 2020 Olympic Champion"
I saw this one live as well. His grandfather had passed away the week before.
Oh no! That is so sad. But the "We did it....." is wonderful. Grandpa was right there encouraging his heart.
Oh my, that's so sweet, i also love my granddad a lot and try to make him proud of me :)
During these Olympics, it was the first time when countries like San Marino and Burkina Faso earned their first medals, and it was the year when a new Olympic sport, skateboarding, debuted. It was the first time a transgender person won a medal, and that was Canadian soccer player Quinn. Many more wonderful things happened that no pandemic could have overshadowed.
Simone Biles Decides To Withdraw From The Olympics To Take Care Of Her Mental Health
She could have said it was an physical injury, but she chose to speak the truth (and face criticism and hate). This will have an impact on future generations of athletes: if you feel something is off, it's ok to step aside. No gold medal is worth risking your health and safety. Best decision ever. Thank you, Simone.
Well, part of it was her worry that her mental health would affect her performance which could very likely lead to a physical injury - which is an issue for us normal folks as well. I know when I’m having an off day I tend to get injured more often.
Load More Replies...Let her lead the road for the rest to know their limits and protest against anyone who pushes them!
Well Scagsy, someone should have been protecting them from being sexually abused by their team doctor, Larry Nassar. Sometimes, we shouldn't push.
Load More Replies...And still managed to come back in the last event and win a bronze. She secretly practiced at a local gym to gain her comfort back.
And good for her. Im so glad she came back. She needed that for HERSELF and for no other reason. She would have always wondered "what if" and now she doesn't have to.
I stand with Simone Biles. We don't want to see the same heartless pressure Kerri Strug had to subject herself to, and the world certainly does not need another Elena Mukhina, may she rest in peace. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elena_Mukhina
And let's not forget she was also one of Larry Nassar's victims. Imagine competing while that was going on. I'm surprised and impressed that this didn't happen sooner.
Abe Siblings Uta And Hifumi Make Olympic History Winning Gold In Judo Within One Hour Of Each Other
Abe is the last name if you were wondering, that was a confusing title. What an amazing story. But I would hate to be any other sibling in their family that wanted use the tv remote!
I wonder if any sibling rivalry will play out at the dinner table regarding which sibling was FIRST ti medal. Because I know me and my sister would tease each other LOL.
I mean no disrespect, but Im going to say something disrespectful.

They're competitors, yes. But they are fellow athletes who know what it takes to get there. So Isaiah Jewett was going to make sure Nijel Amos crossed the finish line come hell or high water and Nijel Amos was going to make sure that Isaiah Jewett was going to cross, come hell or high water. Respect.
Long distance runners, like multi eventers, tend to have that kind of camaraderie. Its probably because they're really hard (in terms of stamina, all events are hard obviously) events and really only the other competitors really understand what they're putting themselves through. In the men's marathon the (I think) Dutch athlete who came second was encouraging his Belgian training partner to come on and follow him to get a bronze.
Load More Replies...This is really amazing. They didn’t have to help each other, or be kind at all. But they did! Sorry if this is incoherent. I’m not sure how to put my emotions right now into words.
At the Olympics, the most important thing is the participation, being a part of something big and feeling the Olympic spirit. But it is surely a great achievement to win a medal and know that all the hard work is rewarded.
To quickly summarize, the US was the country that won the most medals (113); other countries in the top 5 are China (88), the Russian Olympic Committee (81), Britain (65) and the host of the Olympics, Japan (58).
Momiji Nishiya (13) From Japan Is The First Gold Medallist In Women’s Street Skateboarding
I really really hope they enjoy it cause nowadays we know all the tragic stories of the very young Olympic athletes and I'm always worried when i see so young participating
Vicky, this isn't a case of the state and her parents sending her away to live in isolation and do nothing but skateboard. This is the story of a young woman who happens to be phenomenal at her after-school hobby. Many of the best 'boarders in the world are young because they haven't learned to fear pain or that some things are supposed to be impossible. They just go out and nail a trick the 5th time they try it instead of believing its supposed to take you 10 years to master it.
Load More Replies...These young athletes are allowed to compete in these "demonstration events". In 4 years, they will be of the correct age to compete if the sport is held again officially.
I like how the contestants were all smiling during the event, not grim. You could see they were enjoying the contest. We seem to have forgotten the verb "play."
*First Gold Medallist EVER in Women's Street Skateboarding. There you go, Bored Panda, I fixed it for you. Just as you mentioned "First Ever" for the medallists in men's skateboarding.
Skateboard is a very relatable sport. Many other sports require professional training or structured discipline to explore, skateboard merely requires you to have a board and go to it.

Does anyone knows what that means? I don't get it (English not my first language)
My only issue with stuff like this these days is how easy it is to dope then ever before. I mean they did documentary about one year wherea country won a ton of medals where the trainer not only admited they were doping he explained how they changed out the blood samples. Guy actually set up a regiment to beat antdoping tests and it worked. He literally wrote the book on how to beat the system because he was the head of the lab that tested for it lol Like it was a huge deal for whole athlete world when they pointed out how many ways there are to dope your blood, and safely set up a recovery time just long enough you won't test for steroids, to the point where it became a question of can we really trust anything anymore, when people go through that much effort to beat the system.
Take THAT Bruce - I mean Caitlyn, with your "women can't be as good as male athletes"!
Wait wait did she beat the mens scores this year? Or you just talking s**t?

If Usain Bolt's 100m sprint was done in 9.58 seconds wouldn't he still be considered the fastest man? Can someone help me to understand?
He is the fastest at this year's games I'm going to assume is what was meant. So for this year he was the world's fastest man.

The most beautifull thing from this marathon doens't show on this photo: The dudes on the left, Abdi Nageeye (NL) and Bashir Abbdi (Belgium) are training buddies. Nageeye was coming in second, but during the last 200 meters he kept looking across his shoulder and encouraging Abbdi to keep on going, thus probably helping him to overtake third place from Lawrence Cherono.
the finish of the marathon was probably the most exciting one i have watched, as far as marathons go. the silver medalist overcame the leading man all the while encouraging the 4th guy to find his kick and finish with him...and they did!
I haven't heard an update on the Brazilian runner, Daniel do Nascimentowho collapsed. I hope he's okay. He looked like he was in rough shape when he fell.
His team still haven't announced an update, I've been checking. They seriously need to reconsider the conditions they run some of these marathons in. Between Callum Hawkins on the Gold Coast and do Nasciemento here, they really need to learn. The Dubai one was run at night and that had a much lower drop out rate although I think in Japan it was the humidity not the heat alone that was the issue. Kipchoge looks fresh as a daisy at the end because he's exceptional, but its no use just focussing on the handful of runners who will be OK when you have such high numbers of people dropping out, sometimes with serious effects on their health. They're all elite runners (unlike city marathons like London) they should all, barring injury, be able to make it to the end without collapsing.

I'm curious how they developed criteria for rating the skaters? It's hard to measure it in numerical values...
In a similar way to the way they rate gymnastics or diving. Tricks are rated for difficulty and there are deductions and additions based on how well they were performed. What I want to know is do you get bonus points for hitting the cameraman but staying on your board as one guy did? The cameraman deserved his own medal for not dropping the camera and continuing to film.

Is his husband her trainer or he was liviing with her as a hubbie at their home? Were her children and pets also training her?

The First Skateboard Medalists In Olympic History!
You mean the first male skateboard medalists? Or there are three missing from the pic.
Technically they're the first since the men's street skateboarding final was a day before the women's final. The park skateboarding finals were over a week later. So there are actually 12 people who medaled in skateboarding this year.

It's not the first time BP wrote "the first [nationality] player to achieve this" when really it was just the first male player. Do I sense a pattern?

A few days ago I read an article about this race.
