I Tossed Powder On Some Dogs, And The Result Turned Out Amazing (13 Images)
482Kviews
My name is Jess Bell. I'm a Canadian photographer with a flair for capturing unique and artistic images in animal photography.
I recently organized some of my very talented dog-owning friends (and their beautiful dogs of course) to participate in powder paint photo shoots to experiment with a new technique I wanted to try out. The results are bright, crisp, and dynamic! These action shots are turning heads all over the internet.
This color explosion and the dynamic swirls of it are captured in-camera in real time and on location. As a result, every single image is unique and highlights the amazing differences between how dogs of various breeds and body shapes move. The powder acts as a perfect action amplification device.
I had a great deal of fun deciding what color to use on what dog. I took into account each dog's personality and appearance and chose a color that I thought would either contrast strongly or match closely with their fur.
To me, these colorful images highlight just how hard our dogs work for us when asked, and frequently for nothing more than the toss of a toy or a dried biscuit. The photos freeze these split-second moments in time and allow us to appreciate our pets as tremendous athletes as well as companions.
The pure joy that these dogs clearly feel when asked to run agility or catch a disc is palpable. And likewise, the joy I feel when capturing these cool photos makes my heart sing. I hope you like these shots as much as I do, and share them with your friends.
This photo and the rest of my colored powder series was inspired by the marvelous work of photographer Andrea Zachrau Photography. Please go check out her work!

I came here looking for dog photos, but all I see are Patronuses. Sigh, I expect the Ministry of Magic will be taking these beautiful images down soon. Please don't cast a memory charm, I'd like to remember these!
Challenge yourself.... try this with cats.
A bunch of powdery cats laying around in cardboard boxes probably wouldn't have the same epic feel.
To train the cats and get them to listen and time it with them ... I imagine that would be much more challenging
There'd be colour alright. Mostly liquid crimson.
Cat would probably sit there and try to wash it off. LOL
Boss level would be Squirrels. Imagine the photos!
A great idea, cats are unpredictable, but capable of surprising talent !!!

Please don't. stop putting the respiratory health of any animal in jeopardy.
Have you ever done a color-run? It's the same stuff.
“I think I made something amazing” Heck yeah you did! These are so cool!
Dogs are already amazing :)
Beautiful! The dogs are amazing, the colours so vibrant. Excellent photos.
I love your shots. What kind of powder did you use? Where can you get it?
Available online, safe biodegradable gulal (Holi color powder) is a mixture of more than 95% cornstarch blended with food-, drug-, and cosmetic-grade dyes. These pigments, known as FD&C colors in the U.S., are the same ones that bring a rainbow of colors to candy. https://cen.acs.org/articles/96/i9/Holi-colors-gives-vibrant-hues.html
LA Juice - if you look closely the colour isn't near the dogs faces. It looks to me like the photographer took the greatest care to keep it out of the dogs eyes, ears, mouth and nose.
Candy....goes to the stomach. The lungs are not able to digest. I'm concerned about exposing the dogs to powder. It concerns me because I am an oncology RN (and a photographer). Great concept, but could it be done with photoshop alone and avoid exposure to the dogs? The search dogs at ground zero had serious breathing problems from the dust. I looked up "holi" powder. Any type of fine particle gets into the lungs and will not break down. In time.....disease develops. It is not recommended to breathe very much, and mentions asthma. Cornstarch will also irritate delicate lung tissues, and cause increased secretions in the lungs to help the cilia remove the powder from the airways. I would not do this. Not worth the risk. "Wiping the dogs down" after is not adequate either....they need a bath. But I would never do this.
Thanks!
I don't see how this is safe, even if biodegradable- it would absolutely cause respiratory problems in an animal, if inhaled unless biodegraded before it reaches the lungs, which is absolutely improbable.
You are so incredibly talented. These are so beautiful and i love the idea.💙❤doglover
I think they are pretty, yes, but there isn’t a powder, colored or otherwise, that wouldn’t be bad for the dog to inhale.which at least some of them had to have inhaled. Even corn starch isn’t fun to inhale and end up coughing themselves half to death. Even a tiny bit of common sense would have told you.
Loads of photoshop
My dogs " da fuq you just put on me?! GET IT OFF GET IT OFF GET IT OFF!!!!" *spins in a circle chasing own tail nub*
What is the powder made of?

Gorgeous. Makes the dogs look like magical creatures and/or like superheroes (which they often are)
Awesome pictures!
yes, these are amazing
Yep, they truly are amazing! :)
amazing photos!!
I believe some if not all are Photoshop especially the one with 2 dogs and the one has "powder" high above the head ... If in motion the effect would be much further back
The powder on the head of Gemma was not photoshopped. Her momentum carried it up that high. That is something that was so fascinating with this project. The powder moved so differently on different coat textures.
This experiment was a complete success.
Love!
very cool

The dogs were bathed after the shoot, when they went home. They also moved away from the powder with forward momentum only, so very little, if any, was inhaled. You can check out the photographers website, she has a whole blog about the powder.

She's done it once. Surely, living in a city being walked along the roadside everyday would be more damaging than one photoshoot? Perspective is a wonderful thing, try and get some.
Absolutely awesome! Clever, imaginative, and unique! This is a WOW factor in photography!
these are incredible
These are so,ply amazing and soulful! I’ve never seen anything g so powerful and riveting!
So beautiful. The idea was so clever but the execution was genius. So very talented.
These are fantastic. Thank you for sharing.
All are terrific, beautiful dogs, color selection good !!!
These are wonderful! Thank you for sharing them with us!!!
I love these so much!!! Amazing stuff! How did u get this awesome idea?! Love it!
Would also be cool to see your shoot process, behind the scenes? Of course you can keep it a secret though.
So cool to see some innovative and new animal photography!! Love them!
Magical!
I love that you specialize in photographing animals in action! I can't take a single sharp photo of my dog. Not even one! So wow.
Absolutely beautiful!
Very original idea! Wow, these photos are amazing!
These are beautiful! It's like the dogs aura is showing :)
Hell yeah, these are cool. Very innovative idea. You will dust of the woofers, of course?
I love these. The colored powders fit each dog perfectly and make them look like they have superpowers!
This is a classic case of beastiality-ridden animal abuse LOL bruh
Dude, these are awesome! Please do some more, maybe with small dogs? :D
Why small dogs you creep?
These are perfect for tattoos :D
No one was more beautiful than the next. They were out of this world!!!!!
Love the Gillette commercial! I will now use only their products for not pulling it off the air.
Tossed powder on dogs. For taking pictures. And their owners consented. And shared this for approval. And no one sees anything wrong with all this?
Nope. The dogs look like they are having fun and the powder has been kept away from their faces - look at the photos. It all puffs out from the neck or lower.
I see the issue, not just breathing it, but licking it, and potential skin irritation. I see that the photos are pretty, but not worth putting chemicals on the dogs, no matter how supposedly safe and biodegradable they are.
Nope. My dogs roll in duck crap and animal carcass without my consent. I also groom and bathe them when they need it with ZERO qualms.
They don't breathe duck crap. And duck crap is natural You will remember this when your dogs get sick.
Awesome. But now do cats!

You are using something with cosmetic dye in it to throw on dogs? They may contain ASBESTOS, FUCKING ASBESTOS!. PLEASE STOP THIS NOW. Only use vegetable based dyes for animals.
