Cat Who Was Carrying More Than Half Of His Weight In Matted Fur Goes Through Incredible Transformation

Meet Sinbad the neglected Persian cat who was was found covered in 5 pounds of matted fur. “Sinbad came in to our shelter after a utility worker saw him in the home of an elderly gentleman. The man wasn’t able to care for himself very well, and that was evident in Sinbad’s condition,” Elliott Serrano from The Anti-Cruelty Society in Chicago told Love Meow.

When the ‘fur carpet’ was shaved off of this 7-pound kitty, it turned out the matted fur weighed more than half his weight! Unfortunately, due to the lack of use, the kitty’s hind legs got atrophied, but Sinbad didn’t give up.

“He was so tolerant and sweet during the grooming which was grueling. It took hours,” says Elliott. He added: “We had to force feed him for a bit to make sure his digestive system would keep working and not hurt his kidneys.”

The man, who originally took the feline as a foster, ended up adopting Sinbad.”Now he’s getting lots of TLC and attention… “I’m just astounded at how he just loves people, even though people haven’t always treated him very well,” says Elliott. “It’s a lesson we could all learn.”

How helpless and/or mentally ill must a human be if he accepts that his cat has to drag around this humongous lump of filthy fur? I hope the cat fully recovers - including the use of it's legs. But I do wonder what the human looks like and if anybody actually takes care of him. What kind of society is this where an old man cannot or won't call for help? :-(

Loss of mental acuity and reasoning ability often a symptom of old age. I pray I avoid this as I grow older.

For the paws to become atrophied this poor animal has been like this for a long time. None of this man's relatives or the people who have visited him or helped him has deigned move a finger for this poor animal?? I don't believe that a man incapable to care for himself has had nobody going to his home for months. Also, somebody please ban breeding experiments that end up causing health problems and horrible situations like this. Isn't animal abuse banned?? I think it's time to call the purposeful breeding of defective cat and dog breeds animal abuse, which is what it is.

Well said Sara Fina! Cats and dogs with short noses and hair that doesn't stop growing are not normal animals. No wild dog or cat have these health problems. Look at wild animals that have not been messed about by humans; they never look like this poor cat. Shame on breeders that don't respect animals and make them so they have health problems all their lives. I saved a Shih Tzu who was 2 1/2 years old. She couldn't walk because she was kept in a cat cage all her life and was used for breeding. Shame on you breeders who think only of their money and do love animals. Stop breeding cats and dogs that have long term health problems because of the "Standards made up by stupid and cruel people". Nature set her standards a long time ago and they still work. Long live nature pets that have not been ruined by the breeding industry.

I always worry about the elderly owner. You can just imagine the shape he is in. It can actually be far more difficult to save a human.

This is a double tragedy, considering both the neglected cat, and the elderly man who is obviously declining and has no support. I'm glad the cat was rescued from his situation, and will be well cared for. I pray that his original owner similarly receives the help he needs.

Possibly. Depends on if the tendons shortened or not. If they did it would require physical therapy and/or surgery.

Can you imagine how itchy this poor guy was before? Im sure every moment was torturous. I don't understand why people selectively breed cats knowing they'll be causing the cats long-term issues with health and well-being. This cat must not be able to groom himself properly, even without the neglect that added to this.
