It’s hard to come up with a country without a dark period in its history. However, it’s often difficult to understand the struggles of people far far away you have no relation with. In an attempt to spread empathy, Humans of New York have expanded its reach outside the metropolis. Shedding light on the Rwandan genocide, the platform introduced one of its survivors.
The genocide took place in 1994, during the Rwandan Civil War that arose from the prolonged conflicts between the Hutu and Tutsi groups within the Rwandan population. In total, the Hutu-led government killed an estimated 500,000 to 1,000,000 Rwandans, about 70% of the Tutsi population. To give life to these numbers, to fully comprehend the sick nature of these atrocities, scroll down to read what a person who has experienced it first hand has to say about it.

People were shocked to learn about the atrocities on such a personal level
I'd say heartbreaking but it's such an understatement for what the lady went through. I hope she finds peace in life and live for the rest of her family who didn't get the chance to
I'm not sure I know very many who could have survived this not come out of it a basket case... much respect, admiration, sadness, and happiness for this woman.
I understand the intention of this story is to create empathy and maybe power to overcome our own issues. But how does the title "Do You Think Life Is Hard? This Story Will Put Things Into Perspective" help? I can't wake up one day and say "Oh hey at least I haven't been raped guess life is good" and roll away from depression just like that. Others have pointed this out already, but be careful on putting the blame on others (or yourself) for depression when "others have it worse" :/
There are problems with the titles being thought up for this. It should just be here to open our eyes to this woman's suffering and the atrocities that went on in Rwanda. No comparisons need be made nor anyone feel that their situation doesn't matter, because that is what headings like these do.

Pain is relative, you shouldn't compare somebody's suffering to make yourself feel better. People should feel gratitude without looking at the suffering of others & try to help others when they can.
It’s a stupid title. But you can definitely compare and say if she has overcome this and survived maybe I can overcome and survive what I am going through in my life.
Load More Replies...As she said, no words of sorrow or compassion can heal their heart wounds. It happened in Rwanda, former Yugoslavia, Sudan, and the list can go on and on. People can turn into monsters. It's a fact. Small violence can turn into massive. People often ask "what can I do? I am just an ordinary person far away". But you can. Never let any ethnic, religious, racial, social hate take place around you. Never.. Never let anyone fool you and draw you into activities based on hate. It's so easy to blame others, especially because of ethnicity or race. Don't let politicians tell you who's bad or good. Watch "Killing dogs" or "Machine gun preacher" to see what it looks like. We tend to remember things better when we see them.
