Waiting to see who's going to argue that 'crescendo' can also mean a peak, because so many people now say 'reach a crescendo'.
Not I, but your comment did prompt me to look up the etymology, originally comes from Crescent Moon, i.e. when the moon is getting bigger, thence to mean growing, increasing.
