This year has been surprising everyone with some extreme weather conditions. It seems that Texas was just recently frozen into its coldest temperatures ever and residents had icicles hanging from their ceiling fans. Right now, the Pacific Northwest of the US and British Columbia, Canada are getting baked under a dome of once-in-a-millennium hot temperatures. The heat was as high as 115F in Medford and 107F in Portland, both in Oregon; meanwhile, Lytton, BC registered a high of 116F—a temperature that has not been seen in the region since the beginning of records.

Such temperatures are extremely dangerous in the parts of US and Canada where the general highs are usually not exceeding 60-70 degrees. Many people are unprepared for such a climate, as even air conditioning is not a common appliance in their homes. However scary the historic heatwave may be, people are still out there to report and share what it’s like to experience (and survive) such an extremity, and some of them are actually too funny.

I do this for my raccoons on my porch all summer long. Mama and her babies love it. As do the pigeons who stop by for a dip. Always put water out for wild animals in your neighbourhood. They really need it in the summer.

Some advice from a window pro. One is better off covering glass from the exterior, if at all possible. It's much more effective then attempts at interior blocking. The idea being to not let the heat in first.

How make stop heat rays of death? How about stop making them? Yes, you human consumers, which means every single human on this planet has the power to change and save the world so we all can survive, simply by changing what's on your plate!!! - The meat, dairy, egg industries are guzzling up natural resources, spewing out contaminants, decimating natural lands and wildlife which lays groundwork for emergence of deadly viruses like C19, and .... wreaking havoc on our planet's weather system. Eating more than one MILLION animals EVERY SINGLE HOUR will not help to stop this global demise. So please, stop complaining and start acting responsibly and compassionately!!! Please.

Different building codes for different areas. In Texas, they were freezing when it got super cold because their houses weren't built for freezing temps. Just because your house was built to code for a place where it reaches 110 doesn't mean the whole world follows the same codes.

Taking into account that the siding, foundation, and electric meter all match; I would venture a guess that it was lighter siding that got painted a darker color. Apparently vinyl siding doesn’t like this.

I can think of at least 3 scenarios off the top of my head in which people may have left beverages outside of their home. Also, they could have moved the cans to the shady spot where they took the picture - that doesn't negate the claim that the cans were outside in the heat and popped open.

That is the manual power cut-off to the compressor unit, which has 240 volts running through it. A bad connection in the box could have overheated and caused that. If all the power connections had been good, that would not have happened. I know, because I have one on the back of my house that feeds the compressor unit.

I read a bit about this. The guy just can't keep his house cool enough. He said he had two choices; go to a hotel to escape the heat, or stay and keep his fish alive. He chose his fish.

Take some fish tank water dedicate an ice cube tray and freeze their water. Keep the cubes in a freezer bag until needed. Yes it’s a pain in the butt however they deserve to be kept cool as well. Be sure not to put in too many ice cubes

There are some places you do not want to put your pets: 1 outside anywhere, 2 Do not transport your animal in the back of your pick up truck that metal bed will produce serious burns on your pets paws, 3 the beach, If it’s too hot for your feet it’s too hot for your dogs feet. Hot sand can cause burns. 4 don’t leave pets in a vehicle unattended, it takes minutes to be lethal. Leave Fido at home. Remember your pet is wearing a fur coat and many animals are heat intolerant, please bring your pets in make sure they’re in the shade if they’re outside and they have plenty of cool water. I agree with M O'Connell. I have seen that A LOT on communications towers where the attachment wires loosened over time and allowed movement of the coax in the wind. IF the cables are attached properly, that will not happen. Depending on the location and weather extremes, inspections should be done yearly, no less than every five years.

Years ago, before my wife and I got married in '78, I had a black-on-black 74 Mustang II. I live in Southwest Georgia where 95-99 degree days in the summer are not unusual. I was at one of the favorite swimming holes one day and got in my car to go home. It had been parked in the sun for between 4-6 hours. I could swear I could hear sizzling sounds from my wet cut off jeans I had been swimming in and the seat. It didn't take but a second or two to figure out that I needed to give the air-conditioner time to cool things down before I got back in.

In Scotland 1997 the tar on the roads was runny. They had the gritters out to try to keep traffic mobile. The road surface there is designed more for cold weather than freakishly hot. Seeing a motorcyclist in speedos and flip flops get sprayed with grit was painful.

The portable AC units are your problem. They are the least efficient means of air conditioning, to the point where you would be better off without. They draw conditioned air from the room to cool the condenser coil and then blow it outside, pulling warm air in from elsewhere!

    Robert T
    Community Member
4 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

They might not be the most efficient, but they are sometimes the only option. Not all building will allow you to install aircon, and where it isn't normally needed, these are much cheaper for the few days a year you might need them.

Tip: keep the hoses that exhaust the hot air as short as possible: they are radiators. It's a good idea to insulate them, for example with flexible foam sheets.

I would be interested to see research on the heat generated by all the AC units even in a temperate country such as England, let alone some of the hot states of the USA. They heat up the world around them to cool down just your house, I bet they do a LOT more damage to climate than some of the things in the media daily

    Honu

A big issue is the massive power consumption of air con units in any form. Most are not the portable kind. Their window units and splits in most of the world. In the US whole home is common. All of them use a staggering amount of electricity and the number of units in the world is increasing sharply as the climate gets warmer.

Same! My house doesn’t have built in AC and we’re not allowed to put in our own AC (it’s an old place and has asbestos) so we bought a portable AC unit that doesn’t cover very much. It’s the best and last one we could afford in the city and it works for like 1 room.

So, I'm in central Texas. Triple digits are the norm in summer. I understand that people up here aren't used to the heat, just like when we get a hard freeze in Texas and all the schools close. But do large supermarkets like this not have Air Conditioning??

Does TX not have adequate heat for winter? It's all relative. Their AC isn't used to handling 108F for days on end.

Ac is surprisingly not very common in the Pac Northwest, which shocked me when I moved there from Oklahoma. Didn't really need it most of the year. the month that is usually summer it's nice to have. Seriously, there is normally like only a month or so of really hot weather there. I mean over 90's. I can't function without AC in Oklahoma, the heat just melts my brain.

Yeah, they do have air conditioning. It's just so hot for this area, anything cold is gone from the shelves.

Stopped by the Giant this afternoon by my house to find the electricity blew. All of the produce, meats, dairy... the produce was covered but the rest? I cannot imagine how all of the fridge/freezer stuff is fitting somewhere behind the scenes.

There are on frozen foods but most supermarkets have open front cold cases for dairy, meat, and a lot of the produce as well as deli foods and drinks

250f is only 151c and we tend to cook biscuits at around 180c so it would take longer but is do able

nope wont work. if it says 350 on the package, there is no way that even with it being over 100 out side that its going to get up to a temp that can cook cookies lol

Au contraire, my friend. You couldn’t bake bread because it’s a much more complicated chemical reaction, but I can think of several kinds of cookies you could bake like this. (I can only speak for cookies from scratch.)

I don't get this either. If this was a cooling system, you'd be wanting to turn it down in a heatwave so don't need 40. If this is a heating system, also irrelevant in a heatwave. If this is a thermoMETER rather than a thermoSTAT, then it makes sense.

Celcius. 40 is over 100*F. The thermostat doesn't register that hot.

Because when food is in the "temperature danger zone" for longer than 10 minutes harmful bacteria like salmonella can grow. Would be like eating cheese left unrefrigerated. Would you eat a slice of warm cheese left in the sun? It is sad to see the other food wasted just for entertainment

Umm… most hard cheese is much more flavourful eaten at room temperature rather than chilled. My in-laws kept a cheese dome on their dining room hutch that housed a Stilton cheese. It stayed at room temperature 24/7.

There are pictures from the north Africa campaign in works war 2, used for propaganda purposes, of German Afrika Korps soldiers cooking eggs and bacon on the insanely hot metal of their tanks and armoured vehicles. Most of the comments by the troops there were asking the lines of "oh yes, it was that guy, but where on earth did they find the bacon and eggs?!"

The virtue signaling never ends. There is food waste problem in the world... It isn't social media posts causing it. Please, all of you complaining about the waste, get over yourselves.
