I host dance exercise classes in my home for traditional women who wear the hijab. One of the attendees went home and filmed herself doing one of our routines. It was so fierce in an understated way that I asked her if I could share it with the world.

Women who wear the hijab are not often seen, because their body and face are sacred. Its a similar idea to the cultures who dont like their photograph taken, because it will steal their soul. There’s a belief amongst these families that the more you are seen, the more you are taken. However, the eyes are free to speak, see, ingest. And the hijab blocks others from taking a woman’s body from being taken (ingested) into another, which leaves her more whole. We like to say “wholy.” So while she may not dance like the western world expects of a spectacle, for those watching closely, her artistry is obvious.

Anyhow, this is a private world full of unique philosophies, and the women are awesome. And really good dancers.

p.s. The only true names provided are the song artist and the producer (Queen 13), in order to protect the anonymity of the dancer.
